Marriage is not for everyone and contrary to our nigerian traditional believe, you dont have to be married. People will quote all forms and kinds of scripture for you but at the end of the day, the one we all want to follow in the person of Jesus Christ wasnt married. The author of half the new testament wasnt married. There is nothing wrong with having kids without being married if you so chose.. You know yourself and your ability, if know that you cant handle it, no point getting into it to become miserable just for others to be happy. |

I was born and raised in Nigeria before moving to Canada about 10 years ago. I visit Nigeria from time to time. During my last trip, I stayed in an ok hotel near ojuelegba. One evening I decided to take a walk to one fast food restaurant not far from the junction. When I got there, the security girl at the restaurant opened the door for me, bow in a typical yoruba way of greeting and said "welcome sir" like 3 times ( I am not yoruba). From looking at her, she wouldn't be more than 17 years of age. So I decided to chat her up something I do a lot with stranger. She told me that she is in SS2 and that she work most evening after school and that she is hustling so she can help with her exam fee . I was very impressed with her effort and attitude, said a few words of encouragement to her and proceeded to go and get my food. On my way out, I called her over (outside was a bit dark, there was no nepa), when she came, I took out US$100 folded it and gave it to her. We know how we collect bride in naija (lol), thats how she took the money from me and she didnt look at it. I walked away and hid behind a corner to see her reaction when she eventually find out how much money was in her hand. The restaurant have glass doors, so you can see inside. Few moment later she when inside, looked at the money and the showed it to some people inside, (from my guess maybe she hasnt seen a US dollars before) then I could see people gathering and looking at it under the light( probably to make sure its not fake). She started screaming when they probably told her that it real and how much it was worth. Soon after, her and some people in the restaurant all rushed out probably find this man that gave her $100. I quietly slid away and returned to my hotel room. 2 things impressed me about that girl 1) She is hustling and not siting at home waiting for who to buy her recharge card. If i remember my life at 17, I wasnt doing anything useful after school. 2) Her attitude at work. All the time I was there she had a smile on her face bow her knees to every customer that came in. None of it was planned and am happy I was able to widen her smile. It was one on the best days of my recent trip to Naijaland. For some reason, I saw and found hope for Nigeria in her. |
