PoliticsRe: Massive Construction Going On In Ogun State (Pictures) by MarcoP: 1:09pm On Mar 28, 2013
I can't understand why my original post was hidden by the moderator. Simply because I mentioned PDP? Was Amosun not originally a PDP man b4 going to ANPP, b4 finally roosting with Mr Lagos (Asiwaju)? Is OP an ACN card carrying member?
................. I will repost it. You can ban me to satisfy your pay master for all I care.

@ Gbawe;
I don't expect people to waste their
time arguing with you. I know you very
well to be an ACN apologist and an
ethnic jingoist.
Do we expect the state to indite itself
on its own website? Like someone
commented above, why are we
celebrating menial construction as
massive projects. Projects meant to
siphone public funds into Asiwaju
Tinubu's pocket.
Statistics don't lie. Ifo LGA has about the
highest population in Ogun. There is no
single good road linking Sango Ota
through Agbado to Okearo/ Ishaga. That
was the only reason we voted ACN in
Ogun, so that at least we will have
passable roads. Sadly we are yet to see
any development.
I believe Amosun has a good heart and
is capable of delivering, but if only he
can free himself and the state's
resources from the shackles of Asiwaju
and ACN. We will vote him for a 2nd
term if only he can cross over to PDP.

Gbawe: OP has graciously brought his own pictures here and states he is trying to upload more but is having difficulties. Would it be too much, for the sake of having a Political section that is not an arena of feudalism, to ask you guys to do some research yourselves? Ogun state website address has already been provided above. WHy not visit it? Nobody is here to spoon feed others. It should be give and take. I.e you give knowledge and gain knowledge.

Is Nairaland pro-America?
Why is this topic not on front page yet?
Instead of the many irrelevant stuff on FP right now.
Guess NL and Seun are afraid of losing something.
Hmmm! I will keep waiting.

Foreign AffairsAmerica Panicks As Chinese President Visits Africa by MarcoP(op): 10:53pm On Mar 25, 2013
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first trip abroad is to Africa, underscoring the importance of this region to his country’s economic future. Xi’s first stop is Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital where he has already signed some landmark deals with the government that includes developing ports and industrial zones, and granting the country interest-free loans.  Understandably, the United States is panicking because China is threatening their previous dominance in Africa’s economic life and more importantly, in the mind of the African.

Senator Chris Coons, Democratic senator from Delaware in the US senate is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on African Affairs.  He has almost grown hoarse sounding the alarm bell to his fellow countrymen:

“America is losing ground and ceding economic opportunities in Africa to competitors. China, which has made dramatic inroads across the continent in recent years, may undermine or even counter value-driven U.S. goals in the region, and should serve as a wake-up call for enhanced American trade and investment. This is truly a critical moment, as our Chinese competitors are securing long-term contracts that could lock American companies and interests out of fast-growing African markets for decades to come.”

Some say that China is only in Africa for its own purposes, in a relationship that is considered mainly transactional, extractive, unsustainable and indifferent to values of good governance and human rights.  America is not the only one sounding such notes of caution.  The head of Nigeria’s Central Bank, Mr. Lamido Sanusi recently in the Financial Times warned of an ever widening trade imbalance between China and Africa, predicting that Africa may be “opening itself up to a new form of imperialism”.  And it would seem that President Xi is aware of this and may have made calming such fears a major goal of his visit to Africa.

And yet, why are so many African countries opening their doors willingly to China and to Chinese businesses?  There is now an estimated 1 million Chinese working in Africa. Kenya’s ambassador to the United States Elkanah Odembo estimates that “Ten years ago trade between Africa and China was about $15 billion. By the end of this year, it will be about $200 billion.’’

Africa has within it the 6th to 7th fastest growing economies in the world and a middle class that is growing at an incredible rate, and everyone recognizes that the future economic boom is to be found in Africa, hence any so-called 'Superpower' has reason to worry when it’s “opponents” threaten to take the upper hand in Africa.  Africa has huge deposits of crude to fuel China’s growing oil needs; minerals that China wants to buy, and a growing earning power that provides China a huge market for its consumer goods.

But there are some major differences between the attitudes of the United States and of China, and how these rub off on Africans.  The general perception here is that In everything America does outside its shores, self-interest (read selfish) is paramount, and in an age where Africans are getting increasingly jealous of their autonomy and national pride, selfish governments eager to garrote Africa to milk it dry are kept at bay.  Whatever accusations some may levy against China and its true intentions in Africa,  there is something an African finds attractive in a Chinese who bends down with them to plough the field, mix cement, carry head pans of concrete and do menial carpentry jobs.  No job is too menial for the Chinese laborer in Africa and for the African who values hard responsible work, it is an attitude that deserves respect.  This creates a powerful image, different from that of a US construction boss coolly taking the breeze under the shade, with his proverbial whip, while his African employees slave it out.  The workers bear with such attitude but resent it, and when a chance comes to choose, those arrogant bosses are soon dispensed with.

Both America and China have self-interested reasons to be in Africa.  Economic: The United States desires to protect the many companies (especially oil prospecting) of its citizens, wants to ensure it retains access to a huge source of rich crude oil; Security: wants to take the fight to the perceived bases of its perceived enemies: Al Qaeda in Mali, Somali… and now Boko Haram in Nigeria.  China wants a market for its products and jobs for its citizens.  While the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) [read, United States] give dubiously conditional loans to Africa with stringent payment conditions, China gives interest-free, and unconditional loans.  Tell me, which attitude will most win African minds?

The difference lies mainly in the approach.  China studies Africa, identifies its real needs and tries to service those.  Where an African country needs refineries, China offers mouthwatering options to help them build one; where they need roads, China makes a pleasant offer.  African countries are getting their roads and refineries, China is getting its money and getting its people employed.

America on the other hand does not seem to first study Africa’s real needs.  It studies US needs, finds that Africa holds the solution, spins a public relations yarn about their intentions and comes to Africa under subterfuges and behind dark glasses that hide its true intentions.  The selfishness of most United States’ interventions here is known to every African and resented.  That is part explanation of the open arms with which China is being received.

At best China is providing a balance of power that Africa, and the world needs and now that the continent is spoilt for choice, it can hopefully decide what is best for it.
PoliticsRe: GEJ Should Be Impeached - LA Times Joel Brinkley by MarcoP: 9:01pm On Mar 25, 2013
@ OP

This Joel or whatever he calls himself is a nobody. There are worse issues in the United States to warrant his attention, instead of doing this hatchet job for a few thousand dollars collected from corrupt opposition party chieftains.

You cannot come from your problem ridden country to come and criticize GEJ.
America and its system is the most corrupt and exploitative in the world.

I'm too enlightened to listen to distractions like this.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by MarcoP: 10:13am On Mar 19, 2013
akonucheinfo: how much does it take to start a backyard scale layers farm?
You will need an experienced Vet all thru your farming season, beginning from planning your farm site (be it backyard or large scale commercial).

This is my first time in poultry. I involved a Vet from day 1, in deciding location, design and construction. Yet I didn't pay any service fee except transport fare during each visit. I buy feed and medication from my Vet, I pay for vaccination. Its about relationship. Your Vet may be different.

You can negotiate cost of visits with him. Importantly, let him teach you how to manage your farm. Only things like vaccinations will need to be handled by him.

Cost will depend on the number of birds you want to raise. The quantity may also be determined by available budget.
Most importantly, you must have 100% time to take care of the birds especially during the first 6 weeks. I hope I have bn able to answer ur queries.
Good luck.

obnelly: marco p,sorry about your job.please if your interest is not in poultry please dont attempt it because you might lose than you can imagine .Every business has its own ups and downs.Good to here that that fella was doing great but ask him he will tell you the bad news in the business.
My advice is do what you like doing best, not what your friends are doing best.If you have invested the 3.5 wisely you would have been smilling to the banks by now but all the same choose what you like best and invest their, doing look at the money but first develop interest and the result is money money money, lol grin
Please read my post well.
I wasn't asking for advice as to whether to go into poultry or not. Of course I'm already running my small farm in my backyard. I'm not doing it because others are into it. Its a business I'm fully committed to. The only regret is that I started rather late, after loosing some cash in other ventures. I'm only trying to compare notes with d other guy in view of my planned expansion.
Thanks for ur comment all d same.

omotititi: @Marco-p.....My friend is using deep litter system. He started the farm after loosing his job with of the banks last year.He gives the birds maximum attention and he keeps their environment clean. One striking thing about this chap is that since he started,he has been giving these birds from day old his own comppounded feeds till now.He just gave d business is all and the birds responded well by shitting d golden eggs.Do you know that this is his first time ever. This has opened my eyes to the fact that anything one puts himself into completely....success is the only posible outcome.

I marvel at his love for the birds,he prays for them every night before going home as if they r his kids and they too have returned d love by been healthy and productivity. He is such an inspiration no doubt.
@ Omotititi.
Very inspiring report about ur friend. I asked because I've read comments that seem to suggest that deep litter does not yield as much egg as cages. But this guy's evidence seemed to prove that wrong. I think its all about hyiegene management.
Your friend is a smart guy. If I had started my farm d moment I lost my job Jan last year I would have invested my 3.5 m savings into it on a larger scale. Sadly I gradually ate up all d savings thinking I would soon get a better job. Nigeria!!!
My email is austeen247@gmail.com. I will appreciate if your friend can share his feed formula and any other helpful info to assist me.
God bless you.
PoliticsRe: Controversial APC's Lawyer Regrets Action: PDP Ugochinyere Ikenga Hired Me by MarcoP: 8:07pm On Mar 15, 2013
Please be knowledgeable and read between the line. This story of a remorseful self-confessing lawyer is all a creation of Lai Mohammed. How come its only the Nation which is owned by Tinubu of ACN reported it.
I told my friends from day one that the coalition will never work because there can never be honour among thieves.

And to all those criticizing the PDP, let him who is without sin throw the first stone. As far as I'm concerned, there is not yet any alternative to PDP for now.

The only credible alternative I forsee post 2015 is a detribalized youth- focused party that will bring a revolutionary change to our polity.

Any politician with ideas on how to move Nigeria forward can suggest same to the government in power. ACN should stop harrassing Nigerians with high noise level because Tinubu has 'a fat political war chest of stolen public fund'.

Just my 2 naira.

What production system is your friend who owns the 500 birds farm using? Battery cage or deep litter?
If deep litter, can you pls share with us some of his management/challenges/experience using deep litter.
As you know, cost of cage is a big challenge for many start up farmers.
Cheers.

I am glad to inform you that I have built my poultry house at home and it is slightly bigger than the one posted by ussyman.I am having seriuos challenges in getting my day old or point of lay as the case may be as all major farms have been completely booked till July.I need help and my farm is in Benin city.

Please, let us keep the flag flying.
@ Omotititi:
Congratulations on your achievement so far.
It is true that Zartech is fully booked till July. This is not surprising, because their DOC are reputed to be among d best in Nigeria. I will advise you to be patient and wait.
I only received my 200 DOC I booked with them since December 2012 just recently, 4th March 2013.
Although my Vet contributed to d delay as he didn't go to collect them in d last week of Jan when he was asked to come.
My chicks are in their 2nd week and doing well with 0% mortality.
I will appreciate if u can share with us d dimension of ur farm, capacity and cost of construction. I need d info because I plan expanding from my backyard farm to a bigger project soon.
Find attached photos of my birds and farm.
All the best.

I will advise you involve a reliable Vet doctor from day one go. Starting from evaluation of your small backyard farm location/construction, ordering day old chicks, vaccination, feeding and brooding guidelines, you will need a Vet.
My 202 chicks are 5 days old today, they are doing very well, all thanks to my Vet for his guidance.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Is The National Recruitment Fair 2013 A Scam? by MarcoP: 10:14am On Mar 07, 2013
This is a scam.

No job seeker should pay a dime to attend a job fair. There's even no guarantee that attendees would get jobs at the fair because such jobs don't exist.

Exhibitors should foot the bill, if at all such event is necessary.

There's too much scam targetted at innocent unemployed youths in this country. Each desperate man/woman is devising how to exploit people.

An employment agency in lagos is presently asking unemployed engineeers to pay N1 million each for a 6 months training by Siemens, after which they will be guaranteed of job positions.
Can you imagine that? Yet we complain of corruption in government.

May God help Nigeria.

The ban on okada in lagos and closure of Ladipo market has reduced d number of people directly under d sun to share and swallow d heat. That's why d heat is too much at night.

CelebritiesRe: Jonathan Hosts Nollywood Stars At State House by MarcoP: 9:02pm On Mar 03, 2013
There is no where in the developed or developing world you will hear people talk about their presidents and first families the way we do in Nigeria.

That was why El Rufai said that even if Jesus Christ comes to rule us, some Nigerians will still complain and critisize foolishly.

Pls let us learn to show respect to our president.

As for 2015, GEJ still remains the most credible and believable amongst the contenders. I've looked around and see no honest, credible alternatives, except contractors and rested political horses still seeking relevance.

May God bless Nigeria.

Thank you for your very informative post.
Pls what is the size/dimension of your pen in feets? How many couches of block around it and did you use net? Is ur cost inclusive of concrete floor? Are u using deep litter or cage system. Are you using one plot of land or more? Have u built ur farm store/office, if yes how much?
Going by the records, how much will it cost to raise 210 day old chicks for 6 weeks, in terms of feeding, medication and brooding cost?
Your response will help my decision. U can post or send to my mail: aosuma@yahoo.com
Thank you.
ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by MarcoP: 9:11pm On Feb 15, 2013
Nice thread.
The secret is this, if u want your battery to charge properly then you should buy an external battery charger that's suitable to charge d capacity of ur battery.
I have been using a 1 kva Gioxang inverter for over 3 years now. (I believe that's d name, I got it at Opebi)
I don't have PHCN where I live, so I rely on my 'I pass my neighbour gen' to charge my 100 amp battery using external charger for 3 - 5 hrs every evening. We use the inverter for lights only for about 3 hrs every morning to get d children ready for sch. If I decide to use it in d afternoon it powers d TV for another 2 hours.
Before my 15 inches LCD developed problem, I used to charge my inverter for 6-8 hrs and use it to power lights and d LcD tv for 3 good days. Its worth d investment.

Thank you all for the compliments and i am impressed with your work too so far.
Note compare:
Spent almost 2m on the pen house construction Feb2010. the roof is slates. local cages made by some guy in oyo state. i have so far spent 1.5m. we can house 5,000 birds in the pen.I have to spend additional 500k to complete the cages and need recommendation from Basking. You earlier mentioned you have a link.
I have a farm house now that also housed the feedmill built middle of last year.its being slow and steady due to money
I am very keen on broilers this year but i am a bit concerned about the marketing aspect of it before I dive into it.
5000 Layers from Zartech cost 700k in august of last year and got delivery sept 6th.However, i have not kept accurate figures on the amount spent seperately.so far i have spent 3.6m and counting. we are still on 18th week. We get bulk of maize , but wheat offal and concentrates not yet in bulk supply. Am working on that to reduce cost. however over the last 3 years, all my profits have gone back into the business. I have 200 cockerels for sale come easter which we started breeding on the 6th of sept as well. @ Jites, I have sent you a mail and my email is olayinka11@hotmail.com
Hope i have answered some of your questions? Thanks alot.

@Limeone.
Your story about your farm is really inspiring. I would have loved to send you a mail to ask some questions. However, let me make the question open for benefit of other NL members.

1. How many plots of land is your farm occupying?

2. How far can N1.2 million take me in setting up a 600 birds layers farm using one plot of land? I can get a plot of land for about N400k in my environs (Sango Ota). Or, can half plot accommodate 600 birds?

3. I'm presently constructing a demonstration pen inside my compound to house 200 layers that I have already ordered. Delivery is mid-january.

4. My Vet has offered to help me brood them for 8 weeks at his farm before moving them to my place. How much feed are they likely to consume in 8 weeks?

5. Is it advisable to combine poultry and catfish farming on one plot of land? Any negative implications?

Thanks.

Thanks for your concern. I thought along that line but had to go for the day old chicks as my Vet offered to do the brooding for a few weeks before transfering them to me. One need to learn and acquire real time experience. I've got time on my hand, will give this new hobby my full attention.
I'm still waiting for the report. Anyone with it should forward to aosuma@yahoo.com.
How many birds can a plot of land conveniently accommodate. Anyonw with cost implication to set this up, excluding cost of land. Thanks.

@Jites.
Kindly oblige me this report to help me at aosuma@yahoo.com.
I've just ordered 200 day old chick (layers) and 10 broilers to start a mini poultry inside my compound. I need all the advise I can get. I plan to expand as soon as am able to raise enough capital to acquire a plot of land around Ijoko, Ogun state where I reside.
A vet doctor I contacted within my environs has offered to help with the brooding for about 8 weeks to take the stress off me. He will use his broder at a cost yet to be discussed. Anybody with idea how much food and medication these 210 birds are likely to consume in 8 weeks?
