Episode Ten Jake and Lyon dragged me fiercely to the school field. Students gathered as Jake punched me brutally in the face. My face spilled red blood as I watched the faint sight of Jake and people staring all over me. "How dare you? How dare you challenge me Andrew? You've taken what I love the most!". He screamed angrily. The truth is, I've never seen such anger in my life. You must have meant something to him then. "Keep beating me. You'll only make her hate you the most". I laughed wildly. Jake got angrier as he gave me a mighty blow. I fell to the ground with a big thud. You appeared, Melissa running behind you. Your face was pale red and filled with worry. You ran into our middle when Steve was just about to give me another hit and it caught you. You fell to the ground, your face bleeding blood. Steve fell his face, realizing what he had just done. 'I'm very sorry Elsie....I didn't mean to". He tried picking you up but you ducked away from him. "Don't you dare touch me! Why do you do this? What do you gain from being violent huh?" "That's because I love you Elsie". "No you don't. You do not love me Jake. If you do, you wouldn't be after what I cherish the most". "You cherish him right? You love him? Fine! Do you know if he also feels the same towards you? have you ever thought of that?" Jake stared at you mockingly. You gazed at me, our eyes meeting to a fixed point. You wanted nothing but the truth. You wanted to know how I felt towards you. "Andrew?" You asked. 'I've loved you before you ever thought of loving me. I love you so much Elsie". I said. "That's it Jake. I love him. He loves me. I guess we're cool now. Don't you ever trouble us again". You held my hand and walked out of the field. I entered your car for the first time, Melissa seem more relaxed and welcoming than before. You held my wounded arm, wishing you could do a magic to reduce the pain. "I'm fine my love. I just need a little stitching. It's not a major wound". I smiled. "I can't believe I've fallen in love". You sang happily. "Me too". Melissa cleared her throat. "Em..I'm sorry to disrupt our romantic atmosphere but I just have to apologize for my attitude towards you. You guys really love yourselves. Who am I to be hindrance to your lovely relationship? I wish you all the best!" She smiled as Elsie hugged her tightly. "You'd always remain my best friend. I love you Melissa". "I love you too". |
Episode Nine I tried to keep pace with you Elsie, but you were long gone in the dark and I couldn't trace your where about. I however spent the night thinking of you. All my thoughts were drifted to you, Elsie. I hardly slept and after the cock's crow, I stood giddily from the bed and dressed up for school. My mom made her usual hot tea and I hurriedly drank it. I really needed it in my system. Jake and I usually meet up at the middle of the road and then we would walk to school. When I got to our usual waiting point, Jake had not gotten there and so I stood, waiting for him to meet up with me. I hadn't waited for minutes that I caught sight of him. "Whoa! You're so early this morning". Jake screamed as he walked up to me. Yeah, I was always the one being waited for but this time, I had gotten there really early. He smirked, seeing my bulgy eyes which was a sign of sleeplessness. "Really? You didn't sleep?" He cracked up. "Kind off". I messaged the end of my neck. "Very funny. Andrew couldn't sleep because Elsie's in his mind". "Not funny. I don't wanna talk about it please". I said shyly, hiding my face from him. "There's nothing to be shy about. You love her. She loves you. That's the main deal okay?" "Okay". * * * We shared this class together; history class. You entered quite late and there was an empty seat beside me. Steve had called you to sit beside him but you declined, taking the next seat just beside me. Melissa and gone elsewhere to find a place to sit. "Hi" You smiled at me before opening your books. "Hello". I smiled back, catching Jake's wink. He was right. I couldn't concentrate throughout the lecture. My mind was all on you, imagining that the person beside me was the one I love, the one that had showered so much love to me. It was too good to be true. There was a short break after the lecture and we walked out together. "You just disappeared into the blue last night. What happened?" "Oh, I'm so sorry Andrew. I wasn't feeling too well and I just had to leave the circle. I'm sorry if I made you nervous". You apologized. "No problem Elsie" "And..thanks for standing up for me. You really made my night". You said sparkling your lovely eyes. "I...what can I say? Thank you Elsie". I chucked shyly. That was when Steve and Lyon got to the stage, dragging me fiercely out of the school building. |
Episode Eight When Jake and I got there, you were in the middle of the circle, dressed in a traditional wear and swarms of boys were trying to win your heart. You frowned as they made advances to you, Steve being the lead of them. You got angry as you tried to pull away from him but you couldn't. As you caught sight of me, you exerted all the strength you had out of his grip and ran towards me. Elsie, you hugged me. You hugged me so tightly that I could feel your heart beat in my chest. Your body was so warm that I wondered if I had a thick blanket to cover me up from the fierce weather. I couldn't explain the feeling I had. You held your hands tight at my back, not willing to let go. "He's the one I choose". You said to the crowd, people cheering. "It's not fair. It's a competition. You have to choose among those who tried to win your heart in the circle. He only came here and he hasn't even tried yet". Steve said as everyone agreed. "Will you do this? Try win my heart at the circle?" You said softly, your eyes fixed on mine. "Yes". I glared at Steve as I walked up to the stage, my hand in yours. I knelt on a knee, staring at you. "Elsie, words cannot explain how I feel about you. If there's anything I could use to describe this feelings other than love, I would. You're beautiful Elsie, lovely and very pretty; both in and out. Your character is outstanding. You care for others just like yourself. You love everyone. You're humble, kind and very caring. That's why I love you more Elsie. I adore you Elsie. You're the best feeling I've ever received in a long time. You're amazing. I may not have the time or opportunity to tell you how I feel but right now, this is how I feel about you. I love you Elsie!". I said as you smiled, a smile of satisfaction, happiness and love. The crowd cheered as you pulled me again, into a big hug. "Elsie has found her love". People said as we sat together, eating roasted lamb and enjoying the sweet merriment. Whenever I turned to look at you, I'd see you smiling at me. It was like a dream Elsie, that you accepted me who was a nobody. "Let's dance". You said dragging my hand. "What?" "Come on Andrew, let's enjoy tonight's fun". You smirked, pulling me to where other couples were. I danced away with you, enjoying every moment of me. Steve winked at me as he watched both of us, dancing away our sorrow. I could see Melissa at a corner scoffing. I didn't know who was angrier between Steve and Melissa. They both held a great resentment towards me. After we danced and resumed our seat, Melissa walked to us, with a worried look. "Can I see you privately Elsie?" She said to you, rolling her eyes at me. "Can't it wait till after this? I'm having a nice time here". "It can't wait!" She yelled. "Okay". You followed her reluctantly. I watched you leave my sight, wondering what her mission was. It was only two seconds after you left that Jake came, dragging me to a closed place. "Listen to what Melissa says. She may be trying to change Elsie's heart towards you". Jake whispered as I walked deeper into the bush, eavesdropping their conversation. "Why are you flirting with that poor boy?" Melissa scowled at you. "I'm not flirting with him. Besides, he has a name. Andrew". You frowned at your best friend. "When did you become like this? You've never liked a boy this much. Why is Andrew different". "He's different, that's why I love him. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking a boy at this stage of my life". "Everything is wrong and that's because that Andrew of a guy is involved". She insisted, expressing her hatred for me. "Why do you hate him so much. Have you seen him doing anything bad, or is it because he's not from a well-to-do family like ours?" "Yes Elsie, that's the reason. I feel he is after your Parents wealth. Elsie, I'm your best friend and I love you so much. All I want is to see you happy. I don't want anything that would hurt you". "Then let me fall in love". You said, storming out of her presence and running out of the gathering, into the dark. He's different, that's why I love him. I remembered what you had said to Elsie. I then remembered the graceful hug you had given me when Jake and I arrived at the community's circle. All was like a dream to me. |
Episode Seven We walked together on the road as the cool breeze soothed our skins, the goose pimples popping out in excitement. It was a great feeling walking along with you and watching you talk about everything, and watching your deep dimples form when you smile. We got to my small hut and my mom was as usual, making tea. My mom was very glad to finally meet you, even though she couldn't see you. She served us tea and you agreed that it was the best tea you've ever drank. You stayed there for hours before you decided to leave. I saw you off as you went back home. "I had a really nice time at your place". You smiled. "What nice? The small and dilapidated hut?" I asked embarrassed. "It's simple and your mom is really nice. What more do you want? You have to be contented!" You said with a serious look. "Okay Elsie. Thanks for the advice". "You're welcome. I'll see you tomorrow. Thanks for always making my day". "You're welcome. Goodbye Elsie". "Goodbye Andrew". * * * "She's nice". My mom said as we had dinner. I spilled rice away from my mouth as I was shocked to hear that. "Really?" "Yes. She's very lovely". "So you like her?" I asked. "Yes I do. Do you love her?" "With all my heart Mama". I placed my hand right over my chest to show the extent of my love. Though my mom couldn't see any of these. "Does she know?" "I don't think so", I frowned, scratching my hair, "I'm really different from her. I'm practically not her type". "There's nothing bad in trying son". "I'm just scared. Our friendship might break if I tell her how I feel". "You don't know how she feels about you until you express yourself". "Alright mama. I'll think about that". I ate the rest of my food silently. I had just packed the dishes to wash when Jake entered. "Hey you". He smacked me on my right hand, falling the spoons to the ground. "The heck? Why are you even here by this time?" "Because I'm losing my best friend. Elsie has snatched me from you". He faked a loud cry. "Aw. That's so sad to hear. What should we do about this Elsie of a girl?" I placed my hand on Jake's shoulder, pretending to be deep in thought. "I have no idea. She's driving my best friend crazy. Imagine that he didn't come for my mom's vegetable rice because he went out with Elsie". Jake pouted his lips. Yeah! I never miss Jake mother's vegetable rice. It's always the best. It's my first time of missing it, and that's because I was with you, Elsie. "Life is unfair you know". Jake cleaned fake tears with the sleeve of his shirt. "What can the best friend do to compensate for hurting his friend?" I asked as Jake face lit up in amusement. "Well, he can attend the ground feast held at the community's circle. Elsie should also be present". Jake said as my eyes almost popped out of its socket. Elsie? Present? I ran to inform my mom that I'd be going out with Jake and so we walked our way to the community's circle. It was always a fun night every end of the month. A lady would be chosen and different men would try to win her heart. At the end, he would choose one of them and they would dance round the circle. It was a night of feast and merriment. I've never attended one but I did this time around just for you, Elsie. A/N: Speaking of vegetable rice, I made one not long ago and it was terrible. I had made it in an unusual way, boiling onion and pumpkin leave with rice. I ate it for breakfast and it was nice. I enjoyed it. Eating the leftover for supper was horrible...it had this slippery feeling in the tongue and gosh! I almost vomited. I had to throw the rest away. Well I guess I can't make vegetable rice as much as Jake's mother. Do you have a best friend you can't do without? One you share an inseparable bond with just like Andrew and Jake? Tag that lovely friend you love so much. Have a great week and happy reading! |

INTERVIEW WITH NNADOZIE EKENE Tell us more about yourself? I was one among the many creative Nigerian youths. I'm gifted in the arts, visual arts to be precise. My name is Nnadozie Ekene Gideon. I was born in Lagos state and I also did my early education there. I'm from Enugu state. I finished my primary school in Port-Harcourt. It was in primary 4 at 8 years old that my talent was first acknowledged in a Fine Art class. The teachers remark changed my life. "A promising Artist". Ever since, I see art as a form of freedom and a limitless source of hope. A medium through which I could express myself and inspire people as well. So since then, I've been on a journey to discovering the greatness and depth of my creativity. I feel privileged and honoured to have been given this limitless gift and ability. I would love to use this gift to inspire and lift people, to give them hope. Art being a means of expression simply boundless because it has no language barrier. As long as your mind is active, art can and will always communicate to you. I have been experimenting on using the pencil to create images. I must say the medium is inexhaustible. Every day, it makes me wonder if the pencil will ever cease to have another dimension in it. The drawings take me between 60 to 150 hours. In the long run, I gained the virtue of patience and consistency. What is your source of inspiration? First, it is God because He is the master artist. His works have no end. Then some other artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Kelvin Okafor, Marcello Barengdi, Ken Nwadiogbu..., I can just go on and on...even my fine arts teachers. My Parents have also been very supportive. Which country do you think is art-based and why? Nigeria is art-based due to our cultures, traditions, fashion and lifestyle. Art appreciation is growing at a fast pace. Globally, the UK and most Asia and Europe are more art-based than us here in the sense that art appreciation is higher. Thanks to platforms like this that are making Nigeria better in every way. Every ethnic group, tribe and geo-political zone in Nigeria has every element of art woven into their culture and tradition. So we live and work in art here in Nigeria. What does it take to pick a pencil and put a thought into drawing? It takes courage. It takes everything a person entails. It also takes conscious effort and experience or inexperience. Sometimes it takes being intuitively guided other times, it takes curiosity to see what comes out. Who are your role models? Wow...My role are many. They range from art masters to contemporary artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Kelvin Okafor, to mention a few. Do you think Africans appreciate art works like the Europeans do? Like I said earlier, art appreciation is growing in Nigeria and indeed Africa. Although the level in Africa might not really be up to par with what it is in Europe, Europeans look for the aesthetics in art works while Africans seek for the meaning of work. So until most of Africa start appreciating the beauty and art-for-art sake value of art works. Art appreciation here will not match that of Europe. What do you think are the challenges faced by Nigerian artists? The challenges faced by Nigerian artists are basic challenges which have been magnified due to the nature of the environment we find ourselves. Major on the list is "the starving artist syndrome" where an artists can barely live by what he earns. Then there are others like lack of what I call "talent managers". Hence the artist does all the running around. Lack of proper funding, appreciation of creativity is getting better of late. Also, there is the issue of societal regard for artist as people who have lost hope. This is as a result of art being seen as a less lucrative venture. Even in some universities, the Art department buildings are far from fine. If the artist is valued, then his works can be well priced as in developed places. These challenges lead to Nigerian artists been taken for less than the best in the world which is not supposed to be so. Any plans for the future? If you ask me, I would say the future lies in our heart. As we imagine it and walk towards reality is born. With that said, I hope to birth motivational pieces that will set the pace globally even as I set off locally. I see exhibitions across the world in view. I also see myself imparting knowledge to young artists, and lots more. How do you relax when you're not in your studio? When I'm not in my studio, I watch cartoons and motivational or Sci-Fi movies. I also love listening to music across the globe. I feed my mind on positive things. What is your best food? Egusi soup with any available swallow. Your favourite colour? Purple. It signifies royalty. What is your favourite choice for holiday destination? US, because of its diverse cultural heritage. Your social media platforms for fans to reach you? Life Is An Art THE BLIND WOMAN Good day lovely fans of the Nitty Wall and welcome to another fantastic episode of the 'Life is an Art' segment. I left early from work yesterday so that I could meet up with a fast car and leave for Lagos. I wanted to visit home and I didn't want to arrive there late. I boarded a taxi to the park but I had to wait for the passengers to fill up the vehicle. We were just two in number and the driver came over. "Please, would you mind if I pick a woman up from the hospitality department. She's blind and can't see". "Okay". We agreed and he drove over to the place. It took minutes for the woman to come out and when she did, an elderly man supported her along with her loads. She was put to sit down and she greeted everyone cheerfully. "I'm really sorry for keeping you waiting passengers". She apologized in yoruba. Then she handed a loaf of bread to the driver, apologizing for giving him just a loaf. The driver handed her a change of six hundred naira and she insisted on not collecting. "This is too much ma". "No it's not. Keep it". She insisted. Just when we were about leaving, she called two of her co-workers to join us in the car. "It looks like it is about to rain. I can feel its coolness on my skin. It must probably be raining somewhere now". She said. The blind woman was very happy, cheerful and very energetic. She kept talking and laughing to her co-workers on our way. Mid-way, she paid for herself and her co-workers. The driver then became really adamant on not collecting. "Please driver, I beg you in the name of God. You have to collect this". The driver accepted after much plea. What amazed me about the blind woman was that unlike the rest of us, she was too happy. Sight is one of the most precious assets bestowed on us by God. Can you imagine yourself without seeing? Just close your eyes for a second and imagine being dark, completely lost from the natural surroundings and the wonderfulness of nature. That's what it feels like to be blind. Okay, you're not blind. Thank God for that. Have you ever appreciated the gift of your sight, your being able to walk, stand and perform the daily activities without being handicapped. Have you ever wondered what it feels like when people look at you in pity? Well, it's time we get to appreciate the precious gifts we take for granted. It's a big treasure to see, to walk... and so on. Whenever you feel sad, remember the blind woman. She might be blind but in her heart is the spirit of contentment, happiness and generosity. Always Thank God for His numerous blessings on you because it is indeed a gift of life. Life is an art. It is very beautiful and lovely. Although, behind those lovely designs are mistakes and errors. Life is not always the way we want it to be but it is our duty to make ourselves happy. Remember that life is very short to be unhappy. So forgive quickly, love truly and never forget anything that made you smile!!! My Best Birthday (Short Story) I rolled on my bamboo bed and closed my eyes, pretending I was asleep. It was my birthday and I felt very bad. I was still not chosen in the maiden dance which meant that I wouldn’t get married. The maiden dance was used to seek husband. That was my sixth maiden dance and probably my last because I couldn’t afford to get disgraced again “Remi, get up you lazy bones and fetch water”. My mother shouted from the living room. “Mama, I’m having fever. I can’t go to the stream today”. It was a ploy to not go to the stream because the girls will use me as an object of ridicule. “On your birthday? You have to manage so that I can prepare your favourite dish okay?” “Oh…Mama…okay, I’m going”. I took the gourd and set to the stream. As I had imagined, the girls laughed immediately they saw me. “Remi…Monster…the ugly girl who no man likes". They laughed and danced mockingly. “Omowunmi the big teeth. I’m even better than you who is married to an epileptic husband. You better mind your business before I drag those big teeth of yours”. “Eh! Are you talking to me?” She screamed and we started to fight as the girls cheered instead of separating us. I tore her cloth and she broke my gourd. “You broke my gourd? Ah! Mama will kill me”. I forgot about the fight and left the stream in tears. The village had decided to take me to the Coventry since I had no husband. I would be in another world, unable to see nature and the wonderful changes in the village. I went into the woods just to get a last view of nature. I felt peaceful and still sober watching the green grasses and lovely trees dance in wonderful motion to the movement of the wind. I cried till I could no more. It was getting dark and I didn’t notice the presence of a man watching me from behind. “Are you done?” I heard the voice from behind and I was scared. I turned to see the presence of a very handsome man with very dark skin. He was a member of the village and I recognized him well; a son to one of the chiefs and the one everyone adored and respected. “You’re too beautiful to sit here and cry for a whole day. What’s wrong with you?” He walked toward me and sat, as I narrated my remorseful story to him. He was deeply touched and I loved everything about him. He was the first person to tell me I was beautiful and who cared to listen to my funny story. “Do you mind getting married this year?” he asked. “That’s my biggest dream…but to whom?” “To me”. He grinned and I gasped. “I would love to”. I said happily. Everything happened so sudden. My worst birthday turned out to be my best and I was going to the Coventry again. I was getting married to one of the most respected man in Ilu Elewe! |
Life is An Art Do Women Have Problem? Good day lovely fans of the Nitty Wall and welcome to another fascinating episode of 'Life is An Art". After Jummat service yesterday, I sat with a close friend of mine and we discussed. Also a serving corps member, she had gotten an opportunity to invigilate for JAMB and she had to take permission for a week break from her place of work. "Maryam, you wouldn't believe that when I went to work today, I greeted the woman in my office but she didn't respond". She said bitterly. "Hmm...Women with problems". I replied. "You're correct. Women have problem. It's so ridiculous. I called my boss on Sunday evening and he had no problem with it. He greeted me cheerfully when I came to work today but the woman is just different". "That's women for you. They also want to feel important. She's angry because she had also expected you to report to her, explaining why you'd be away for a week from work. You didn't". "She's not even the boss. Why would I report to her?" "Cos she's a woman. Women are like that"... Let's get by with the topic; Do Women have problem? I wouldn't say we have problem. Who am I to openly disregard and accuse a particular gender? I'm also a woman. Would I then say I'm filled with problems? No! Let's look at the common qualities of a woman. An average woman is fragile, beautiful and innocent. A woman is a complex set of being trying to fulfill several needs at the same time, not knowing which ranks highest in her scale of preference. A woman is insatiable, determined when she wants to get something, relentless and very hardworking. A woman is complex, meddling her thought and wondering which to implement at a particular period of time. A woman has courage and boldness to face whatever obstacles comes her way. A woman loves to feel important, more important than the woman next to her in beauty, glamour and intelligence. A woman is excessively jealous, wants to be the most superior at all times. A woman is intelligent in that she never forgets how someone have impacted in her life; be it good or bad. This is why she easily get hurts. A woman hardly forgives and when she does, she hardly forgets. A woman is powerful, she have power to weaken the strongest of men. She is manipulative in nature, knows how to get what she wants at any point in time. A woman is seductive, every part of her body is center of attraction. She can wander into a man's heart with just the spark of her eyes and the innocence of her voice. Do women then have problem? Women do not have problem? They only respond to the cause of nature. However, care must be taken. They're exceptions to this but one do not fully come out of this qualities. Age, civilization, advancement in knowledge, increase in spirituality, unique qualities...all reduced this trait. However, one should take note that a woman would always remain a woman. People often make accusations when women does certain things. "Oh! No wonder, na woman. Na so dem be". Get used to the fact that women are unique and no, women do not have problems. As always, Life is an art. It is very beautiful and lovely. Although, behind those lovely designs are mistakes and errors. Life is not always the way we want it to be but it is our duty to make ourselves happy. Remember that life is very short to be unhappy. Episode Six Jake and I sat at our usual corner in the cafeteria, having lunch. I had told him how the evening went with you and his mouth had been left hanging open. "Honestly Andrew, I never knew your full potentials. You're truly a genius...winning over Elsie when the so-called Steve didn't get a chance?" Steve hummed playing with a slice of chicken with his fork. "Don't get me too flattered Jake. She sees me as a friend, someone she can freely talk to". I said sadly. "You never can tell man. I'll just advice you to take one step at a time". "That's exactly what I'll do". I said as you and Melissa entered the cafeteria. You looked quite different. You were a rather loose clothing and you had a big sweater on. Your face was pale and you looked really sick. You smiled immediately you caught sight of me and you walked to meet me. Melissa had no choice but to follow. "Speak of the angel". Jake whispered. "Shh. Please behave well for the meantime Jake. I don't want her seeing that I have a sassy friend like you". I rolled my eyes at him. "Oh, I'm sassy right?" "Oops, my bad. We'll talk about this when she leaves". I said as you were got to where we were seated. "Hi Andrew". You gave a simple wave. "Hello. Nice to see you again. Meet my friend Jake and Jake, this is Melissa my special friend". I said as Melissa scoffed at me. "Nice to meet you Jake". You smiled at him. "You too". Jake replied. "You look rather sick. Are you okay?" I furrowed my eyebrows in concern. You stifled an awkward but silent laugh. "It's nothing, just the reaction from the rain yesterday. It's not really bad. At least I didn't catch a flu". "I still feel bad letting you play in the rain. You look very sick". "I would be fine Andrew. I don't mind having this cold for having a little fun yesterday". You grinned. "Okay. I think a hot tea would be best for you". "Yes. We could go buy one of the best teas after school hours". "My mom sells the best tea. She would happily make enough for us". I said proudly. "Okay then, I'd meet you after school hours". You said and left to make your order. When you left, Melissa didn't follow you. Rather. she walked up to me with an evil look. "I know your type. Trying to deceive a rich girl for money. Elsie might enjoy your company but I'll never make her fall in love with you. Mark my words". She pointed a finger at me and left. "Amazing". Jake shook his head as he continued his meal. * * * Jake and I had just Chemistry class when we stumbled into Steve and Lyon on our way out. I knew it'd be a disaster! "We get to meet again Andrew". Steve me an evil grin. He was dressed in his usual sleeveless shirt and baseball cap; showing part of his spiky hair. "Yeah, we've got business to attend to". I tried to leave but he halted my movement by standing in front of you. "You dare not walk out when I've no finished what I want to say". Steve said as he shoved his hands in his pocket and paced around me in circles. "Who are you to be chase after what I desire the most?" He said in anger. "Is anything wrong in my being friend with Elsie". "Yes. Everything is wrong. She likes you". "That's great to hear". I smiled mockingly. "Seriously? You don't know who you're threading with". Lyon yelled at me. "Oh I do. The so-called popular boy in Ovaron and his friend". "We shall see". Steve said as he angrily walked out of the place with Lyon. "Guess you have two enemies now. The main thing is how to stop them from preventing you from getting close to Elsie". Steve said matter-of-factly. |
Cooks' Corner How To Make Nigeria Concoction Rice Ingredients • 2 cigar cups | 500g (1.1 lbs) long grain parboiled white rice • 2 cooking spoons red palm oil • 1 big piece of stockfish • 1 medium smoked Mackerel/Titus • 1 big onion • 3 tablespoons ground crayfish • 2 big stock cubes • 1 small iru (locust beans) • Pepper and salt (to taste) • Vegetable: choice of Scent leaves, curry leaves or parsley Before you cook Concoction Rice 1. Soak the dry fish and stock fish in cold or hot water and when soft, clean and separate them into small pieces. 2. Parboil the rice using the method detailed in parboiling rice for cooking jollof rice. Cool the parboiled rice with cold water and put in a sieve to drain. 3. Grind the crayfish (if not ground) with the iru using a dry mill. 4. Cut the onion into tiny pieces. 5. Pound/grind the pepper. 6. Pick and wash the vegetables. No need to slice it but you can do so if you wish. 7. Separate the smoked Mackerel into big chunks. Cooking Directions 1. Put the pieces of stockfish and dry fish in a big enough pot, add the diced onions and the stock cubes. Add some water to cover the ingredients and cook till the stockfish is very soft. 2. Add the pepper, ground crayfish and palm oil. 3. Top up the water to the same level as the contents of the pot if necessary. Cover and cook at medium to high heat for about 7 minutes. This is the time the palm oil needs to fully integrate with the rest of the ingredients. 4. Add the drained parboiled rice, stir very well and check that the liquid is at the same level as the rice. If less, top it up with more water. 5. Place the smoked fish and the vegetables on top of the rice. 6. Cover the pot and leave to cook on low to medium heat. This way the rice does not burn before the water dries up. 7. If the rice is parboiled correctly, the Concoction Rice should be done by the time the water dries up. Taste to confirm. If not, you will need to add more water and reduce the heat to prevent burning. Keep cooking till done. 8. Once you confirm that the rice is done, turn off the heat. Add the scent leaves or parsley on top of the rice, cover and leave to stand for 5 minutes. Then stir and it is ready to be served! Serve with Fried Plantain or Nigeria Moi Moi. |
Episode Five I had never been that nervous in my life. The minutes I waited for you to join me was terrifying. I had arranged everything in a perfect way. There was an extra fishing rod lying by my side. It was for you. I had spent the hours after school scanning through the market for the best fishing rod for you. At my back was my drawing board with stacks of paint around it. It was the best atmosphere for me to enjoy after school and I had invited you to my schedule. The river was magnificent and very beautiful; the green grasses at its banks was a very lovely serene to meditate and forget about all sorrows in life. It was where I got the best inspiration to draw and paint. The cool breeze that whirled in the evening was friendly and very entertaining. I sat at the river bank as I dipped my legs into the cool water. Watching the waves form in front of me, I smiled, thinking of what happened today. How you stood for me. It was like a dream Elsie. You stood for me without knowing me and you accepted my request just like that? I wondered if you're truly from this world. "Hi". Your warm hands touched my skin and I was startled out of my thought. "Oh...Elsie, you're here?" I smiled, trying to ease off the air I had just developed. "Ah...nothing really. I'm glad you could make it". I gave you an appreciative look. You were dressed in a simple pink top and jean trouser. Your hair was left loose and you looked really beautiful. 'This place is very lovely Andrew. I never imagined there is a place like this in Ovaron". You admired the whole environment. It was indeed beautiful! "I'm glad you like it. This is where I get loose of the day's stress. The perfect place to make my day". I laughed and you joined. You removed your shoes and dipped your legs into the water, just like I'd done. "Gosh! This atmosphere is amazing. Why am I just discovering this now?" You pouted your lips in amusement. "Thanks to me". I laughed, watching your face lit up in delight. We started fishing some minutes after. I taught you how to fish and you got the skill in no time. I watched the way you clasped your hands excitedly and the sound of your laugh whenever you caught a fish. With time, we had caught so many fishes. "I can't believe I went fishing today". You danced around in delight. "Yeah, I do understand that Elsie. It's always a great experience". I packed the fishes into a bucket. "The next to do is painting. There is a little workshop". I said proudly, creating the best impression of myself. "You paint?" You widened your eyes in surprise. I always knew ladies love artists! ): "Of course!" "Wow! Pretty pretty amazing. You're so talented". My face turned red after I heard what you said. You just praised me Elsie!" "Don't flatter me". "It's the truth. Let's get to work". You studied with full concentration as I taught you the basic rudiments of painting. You were the best learner I've ever seen Elsie. You listened attentively and answered questions appropriately. We spent like an hour painting and when we were done, the sun was beginning to set and cloud was turning dark. It was sure that it'd rain. "The painting is lovely". You felt its beauty with your eyes. It was still wet and had to dry. I kept it in my little workshop as I joined you. The rain started to drizzle and I hurried to get you out of the place. "It's starting to rain. Let's leave before it gets dark". I packed all my stuff, ready to leave. "No Andrew. Let's dance in the rain". "What?!" I stared at you in disbelief. Like seriously? Dance in the rain? "Yes. I've always wanted to do this, even though my mom wouldn't accept me. Please Andrew?" "Huh?" I stared at her disbelief. How could that be possible? Sounds pretty awkward and childish! "I know it's pretty awkward and childish but let's do this for fun". You grabbed my hands and dragged me to the rain, like you could read my mind. "Whoa! I love this! I've always wanted this". You raised your hands swiftly, enjoying the wetness of the rain. I jumped in the rain and I saw that you were right. It was truly fun. We both laugh as the rain poured on us with full intensity. I stared at you as you danced in the rain. I had never seen you that happy. It was then I knew that I was truly in love with you! |
WHITE EGGS OMELETTE Ingredients 3 eggs 1 plum tomato (Tomato Jos) 1 small onion 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying) Salt (to taste) Fresh/Dry Pepper (optional) Before making it: 1. Cut the tomato into small pieces. Cut the onion into thin slices. The onions should be the same quantity as the tomato (after cutting them). 2. Break the eggs and remove the egg yolks. Add salt to your taste and mix. 3. If using fresh pepper, cut into tiny pieces. 4. Place the sliced tomato, onions and pepper into a bowl and season with a pinch of salt. Preparation 1. Set your frying pan to heat up. 2. Pour the vegetable oil into the pan and make sure that the oil greases every part of the pan. 3. When hot, reduce the heat of your stove to low and pour the egg whites into the pan. 4. Sprinkle the pepper, onions and tomatoes on top. You need to do this immediately before the egg whites cake. This is so that part of these ingredients will be buried in the egg whites when it cakes. 5. Leave till the egg whites are completely caked. You can confirm this when it is white all over. If your stove is on very low heat and if you are using a non-stick frying pan, this will happen without the egg burning. 6. Once it has caked completely, shake the frying pan and the omelette moves on its own. If it doesn't then it is either the heat is too much or the inside of your frying pan is too rough or both. 7. Gently transfer the omelette to a very flat wide plate. Source: www.allnigerianrecipes.com

Life is an Art Pain demands to be felt "If pain must come, may it come quickly. Because I have a life to live, and I need to live it in the best way possible. If he has to make a choice, may he make it now. Then I will either wait for him or forget him". -Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept. Hello lovely fans of the Nitty Wall. Welcome to another episode of 'Life is an Art'. I did an interview with a fabulous and upcoming writer this week and the response I received left me to ponder. She talked about her early life, how challenging it was and how she had learnt from pain (The interview will be updated this week...so watch out!). She talked about how pain inspires her to write. "I had no specific inspiration, but partially, pain inspired me to write". Through the few years spent in life, I've come to realize that pain is something that we all ought to pass through at one time or the other. It's our duty to learn how to scale through that pain and still be happy. Life is not meant to be smooth all the time. Life would be indeed boring if there was no dark side. I thought to myself recently what I'd write if everything in life was all good. Some go through pain to teach others and some learn from it. Pain grooms our life. It admonishes us that 'life is not a wish-granting factory' #TFIOS# and that life won't be rosy always. It tells us that life is only temporary. It doesn't last forever and things would not turn out good always. Pain lightens our heart, makes us patient, makes us closer to God, inculcate the spirit of forgiveness in us. Some pain exists that are lifelong. They flash through our mind at one time or the other. They are pain we have to live through. Not all the people that smile always are problem free. They only know how to be happy despite their pain. Markus Zusak in 'The Book Thief' wrote, "Imagine smiling after a slap in the face. Then think of doing it twenty-fours a day". Pain is something that must be felt, live through it, learn from it, be happy and smile always. Remember to check the interview of the fabulous writer, Aisha Aliyu on Saturday. Life is an art. It is very beautiful and lovely. Although, behind those lovely designs are mistakes and errors. Life is not always the way we want it to be but it is our duty to make ourselves happy. Pain is a sudden hurt that can't be escaped. But then I have also learnt that because of pain, I can feel the beauty, tenderness, and freedom of healing. Pain feels like a fast stab wound to the heart. But then healing feels like the wind against your face when you are spreading your wings and flying through the air! We may not have wings growing out of our backs, but healing is the closest thing that will give us that wind against our faces". -C. Joybell C.

Episode Five (Finalle) ...Today, when you sat beside me without any greetings, I knew that things could change in an instance. We were still seatmates but we sat like strangers. You pretended like you didn't care about me. You did all things by yourself, but in your eyes was sadness. You walked alone and had lunch without me. It is very painful seeing you in such a state. I tried to concentrate even with how difficult it was. Seeing you beside me and unable to say anything. You know, it wouldn't have been worse if we weren't seatmates but unfortunately, we are. I understand everything Donna and I know that you are very right to get angry with me, but what about our friendship? It shouldn't just go down the drain like that. We should learn to forgive and let the past be past. I visited your Aunt's place after school to see if I was wrong about everything. Maybe I'm just wasting my time writing this letter and maybe if I could explain everything to you, you would forgive me whole heartedly. But I was wrong. I met your Aunt in the living room. She looked very sober and I've never seen her that way before. "I'm really sorry Justin but Donna doesn't want to see you". She said as I sighed in disappointment. "Okay". I said as I started to leave. "Wait Justin," Her Aunt cried, "Donna is not fine. She's worse than when she lost her Parents. She bawls all night ". "I'm really sorry Aunt". I said as she hugged me. I knew that I had broken your heart. I'm very sorry Donna. I'm sorry for making you unhappy and heartbroken. I want everything to come back to the way it was and I beg you. I beg you to forgive me for what I've done because I promise to never break your heart. As you read this letter, I sincerely hope you forgive me and make us best friends again. Yours Sincerely, Justin. * * * It was a week since Justin kept the letter in her bag and there was still no reply from her. He gave up on her. He gave up on everything. He accepted the fact that they would never be friends again. He paced around the room and tried to forget about the wonderful girl who was once his best friend but he couldn't. Tears streamed down his face as he searched through his box for their friendship album. It was an album of the pictures they took together. Maybe if I erase all pictures of her, I'll forget about her. He thought as he went through the pictures and memories of the past flashed through him. He was about to tear the pictures when he heard a knock on the door. "Mom, not now". He screamed at the door. To his utmost surprise, Donna entered the room with a white envelope in her hand. She was holding the letter he had written to her. "Can I sit?" she asked nervously. "Of course". he said as she sat beside him on the bed. She cleared her throat. "Your letter is marvelous. I'll keep it in a safe place so that I can read it all over again". She smiled at him. He felt a twinkling sensation in his stomach. It was long he saw that cute smile. "Thanks". Justin commented. "You're always welcomed". She replied. There was an awkward silence between them as they both stared around the room nervously. Donna looked into his eyes and he kept his gaze at her. "I've missed you so much best friend". "I've missed you too". Justin said as he pulled her into a big hug. Justin let the tears flow freely down his face. No one need to tell him that Donna was also crying. Her tears wet the shoulder of his shirt. The hug said it all. It meant that she had forgiven him, that they were going to be best friends again and that they would never try to hurt themselves anymore. It said that they were truly inseparable and their friendship was one that would last forever. Justin and Donna became best friends again but he had a lot to learn from their crisis. He learnt to always trust his friend and to put himself as if he was in their condition. He also learnt to protect and stand by those who mean a lot to him. He learnt to never betray a dear friend and to learn ways to settle whatever dispute two friends could be having. Justin and Donna were inseparable like before but they could never forget the impact of the letter because it said all about their friendship and how true and genuine it was. Episode Four 25 Trance Way. Clutchwood Road. Camberwell Alabama. Dear Donna, I write to express my feeling about you. To tell you how important you are to me and how incomplete I feel without you. I remember the first day I met you. You were new in the nursery class. The teacher said you moved to Manhattan but no one knew the reason why. I stared at your sad eyes and I wondered what could be wrong. You kept to yourself and you hardly said a word. During lunch break, I caught you at the back of the class crying. You looked fragile and so much in pain that I couldn't figure out what could be wrong. Then I came close to you, to comfort you, to make you feel that whatever was bothering you would change in no time. You cried on my shoulder and that was when I knew what true pain felt. You told me you lost your Parents and had relocated to Manhattan to stay with your Aunt. I felt very bitter about that. I walked you home that day and your Aunt was very glad that you finally found a friend. I tried to make you feel better. We sat together in class and we studied together. I instigated you to join the basketball and after so much pleas, you agreed. You became different. You started to smile and believe in yourself again. We were the best of friends. Just like always, we were inseparable. I had other friends but your friendship was different. It was real, genuine and pure. The day I'd never forget was when our classmates bullied you. I told them to their face that they should never talk back at you and that if they did, I'd get them reported to the school authorities. They called you an orphan and a loner. They said you have no one but me. We both sat in the field and I waited for you to pour out all your feelings. You cried for hours and all I did was fold my arms and watch you. I wanted you to feel better. When you finally stopped crying, you looked me straight in the eyes. They were very red and swollen. "Promise me that you'd always stand by me no matter what happens". she said softly. "I promise". I assured her with so much confidence. That was the foundation of our relationship and that was when we knew that we were inseparable. Our friendship grew stronger for the next five years that even till now, people still mistaken us for twins. Donna, I never meant to make you angry. I, like other students was surprised that the money was found in your bag. There was no evidence to prove otherwise and everyone laid claims on you. No one believed you and you knew that they would never do so. When you turned to me, I saw the understanding in your eyes. You knew if no one else did believe you, I would. You wanted me to fight for you just like I had done five years ago. However, I disappointed you. I didn't believe you. I also blamed you for being a thief. How could I have thought otherwise about you. I've never known you to steal, even at the most trying times. You preferred to starve of hunger instead of begging for life. You had this pride in you that I cherished a lot. Then why didn't I stand by you? You know as they say, I think Satan was playing with my thought. Because when Annabel entered and explained the whole situation, I knew that I had lost my best friend. I knew you would never trust me again... |
