Cooks' Corner (Akara and Pap) Akara is one of the well-liked breakfast staples in Nigeria. It is prepared with the combination of bean paste, fresh onions, and salt. Akara is a kind of popular food that you would see street sellers, frying at different areas, especially in the early hours of the day, and late at night. It is mostly served with ogi (pap), garri liquid and bread. Continue reading https://www.maryamnittywall.com/2019/03/cooks-corner-akara-and-pap.html

Ayobami Adebayo’s debut novel is about a young married couple, Yejide and Akin, who have remained childless after 4 years of marriage. They have to face the emotional pressures from their families and live with the stigma placed by the society on a childless family. All of this occurs in the middle of a political transition from the early 80s to 2000 in Nigeria, where the military coups are springing up and armed robbers have the boldness to write letters to their hosts before visiting. Stay With Me revolves around Akin and Yejide’s relationship and how their marriage is put to test as a result of their childlessness. This predicament questions the validity of their marriage, the couple’s family’s agreement to bring in a new wife and Yejide’s desperation to conceive first, thereby visiting several miraculous prophets and having a mental condition that makes her believe that she is carrying a child. Episode Six Anas's Point of View Everything's Over! “Can you just…for the first time in your life…be nice enough to close the toilet seat…and stop littering the room with your clothes? Episode Five Najwa's Point of View Yes, I Love Him! The month has been a stressful one…really stressful! Barakah had been hospitalized and I’d spent my days by her side, holding her hands, feeding her, muttering prayers and hoping that my friend-turned-sister heals completely. The incident at Zara’s engagement still makes my face blanches in shock. The sight of Barakah lying trodden on the floor like a log of wood. Blood stained on the wall. Her bare chest revealed. “I had gone to the store to adjust my gown. As I unzipped my gown, I slipped and fell.” Barakah had said when she regained consciousness at the hospital. Episode Four Anas's Point of View Zara’s Engagement “How is your beautiful wife and daughter?” My mother is saying on the phone. “They are fine.” I sigh deeply, knowing what would come next. “When should we be expecting another one? It should be a boy this time.” She remarks. Continue reading https://www.maryamnittywall.com/2019/02/flaming-home-episode-four.html

Flaming Home! (Episode Three) Najwa's Point of View Disappointment I can hardly breathe. I feel a throbbing pain at the back of my head. My mind is a whirl of confusion. I have been pacing around the room for minutes now. I am disappointed…disappointed with everyone! Mrs. Bola had given my position to someone else and Anas have been mocking me in my face. I’d been gushing about visiting the cinema since the beginning of the week. It would be my first time to experience the fun of sitting in a dark-lit room and watching a movie on a large screen. The same scene that I’d imagined while reading books and watching movies. I would be sitting with widened eyes, holding a pack of popcorn and squealing in excitement while staring at the screen. I would be sitting beside a man…but he wouldn’t be the love of my life. Contrary to what the novels portray, I wouldn’t be resting on his shoulders nor shielding my face in his chest when watching a gory scene. I wouldn’t be holding his hand or smiling because of his intense gaze of admiration on me. I would be going to the cinema with a male friend…with no emotional attachment. “I know you’re a bad planner, Mujibah but you have to get to Ojota by 1:00 pm.” Ibrahim said over the phone in a loud tone. I could hear the sound of the busy road and the blaring sound of car horns; cars that struggled to drive past the busy road. I wore my favourite orange-coloured gown and veil as I watched my sisters stare at me in awe and admiration. “Make sure you bring ice cream and pizza when you’re coming oo!” My younger sister smiled delightfully. Episode One “Grrr…” I mimic the sound of his snore in a squeaky voice as I watch him throw a leg over my stomach and drool thick-white saliva from his mouth. I can perceive the foul smell reeking from his half-opened mouth. It smells like the huge pile of refuse along Ojota road. Disaster! That is one word I can use over and over again to describe Anas. I stare around the room; the blue-satin curtain I had ordered from London, the richly-furnished upholstery chair I usually sit on while rehearsing for the next day’s show, the brown-painted wardrobe designed with the best-quality and finest wood from Africa, the cream and brown-coloured wall that is usually the background of most of my Instagram pictures. So yes, our room is lovely and exquisite…the only disaster in the room is no one but Anas. “Ahhhrrrhhhhhyyy,” he tosses his body and his hands reach to my face accidentally. Post-vacation blues! That’s how I feel right now. The feeling that you should be sprawled on the bed, binge-watching a TV series instead of sitting on the office chair, typing away. The feeling that you should be boiling rice in the kitchen instead of wondering when to buy lunch from the nearest restaurant. The feeling that you should sleep till 11:00 am without leaving very early to face the Lagos traffic. Continue reading https://www.maryamnittywall.com/2019/01/post-vacation-blues.html

I started reading the novel (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han) but didn’t read up to three pages because of the font size and the format of the book. I’ve read several positive reviews but my squinting eyes prevented me from proceeding with reading the book. Late last year, I watched the trailer of the movie on Netflix. It meant that the story had been adapted into a movie! Not long after, I watched the movie and concluded that it’s a lovely story. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo did justice to the story because their acting and chemistry were superb. Final Episode “He said that I’m too short and my nose is flat…that our children won’t be beautiful,” Rofi’at said in a high-thin voice and we all yelled in disgust. “Really? You mean he called off your marriage because of your looks?” Zuwayrah widened her eyes in shock and disbelief. The room fell silent as we were all perplexed and flabbergasted. “You’re surprised abi? Oyaa, hear my own. My own fiancé said that getting married will be a waste of genotype. Because we’re both AA.” Aisha said and we all burst into laughter. “Na lie!” Zulaikha laughed in disbelief. “Hear my own. He said that I’m fake. That my hair, my eyes…everything is fake. The surprising thing is that he didn’t return my texts or pick my calls. It was when we called for a family meeting that he said all these. The question is, didn’t he see me before proposing?” Continue reading https://www.maryamnittywall.com/2019/01/the-precious-figure-finale.html

Episode Seventeen “Hey, Sis. I’m really surprised to see you at my doorstep. What brings you here?” Mustapha grinned at me. His eyes gleamed and his face was a rictus of sheer delight. He was putting on a red t-shirt and a white pair of shorts. He didn’t seem shy and reserved…like he used to. He sounded very cheerful and confident. I floundered words as I wondered what I was doing there and what I was going to tell him. Continue reading https://www.maryamnittywall.com/2018/12/the-precious-figure-episode-seventeen.html
