Personally I think it's better to do it when your natural hair hasn't grown out much. You can rock the short look while using that time to discover what your hair really likes. Trying to do that once the hair is much longer is a hassle. I also think it's the best time to experiment with color. Also consider the stress of working with two different textures.

There really is no "perfect time" to big chop. Just do it when you're ready
