Politics › Re: Nigeria Needs Military Reserve Force To Tackle Insecurity, Ex-army Officer Says by MarketDispatch: 12:45pm On Jun 09 |
EmmaSeun12: By Our Correspondent
A retired military officer and security expert, Captain Oyeleke Folajuwon Oluwole (Rtd.), has called for the establishment of a military reserve force in Nigeria, describing it as a strategic necessity for addressing the country's growing security challenges.
Oluwole, a United States-trained security professional and former U.S. Army combat veteran, said Nigeria's current security architecture lacked the manpower required to effectively confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, piracy, communal conflicts and other emerging threats.
In an article titled "Nigeria Needs a Military Reserve Force: A Missing Link in National Security," the retired officer argued that the Armed Forces of Nigeria had performed creditably under difficult circumstances but remained overstretched due to multiple internal security operations across the country.
According to him, the nation's active-duty military personnel alone cannot provide the manpower depth required to simultaneously respond to numerous security threats in a country with a population exceeding 230 million.
He noted that many countries, including the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom and India, operate military reserve systems that serve as force multipliers during conflicts, emergencies and natural disasters.
"Nigeria should adopt a similar approach. A military reserve force would allow the country to expand its available manpower without incurring the enormous costs associated with maintaining a significantly larger standing military," he said. Oluwole explained that reservists could continue their civilian careers while undergoing periodic military training and remaining available for mobilisation during emergencies.
He added that the proposed reserve force would enable Nigeria to harness the expertise of professionals such as doctors, engineers, pilots, cybersecurity specialists, intelligence analysts, logistics experts and telecommunications professionals for national security purposes. The retired officer also argued that the reserve system would prove useful during natural disasters, humanitarian crises and other emergencies requiring rapid government intervention.
He said the initiative could support disaster management agencies, assist in evacuation and relief operations, protect critical infrastructure and reinforce security operations during periods of heightened threat. Oluwole further maintained that a reserve force would provide an alternative platform for patriotic Nigerians who wish to serve the country but are unable to pursue full-time military careers.
According to him, the arrangement would strengthen civic responsibility, patriotism and national cohesion by allowing citizens from different backgrounds to participate directly in national defence.
He suggested that reserve components could be established within the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, with retired military personnel serving as immediate-response reservists while trained civilians and specialists form a broader operational reserve.
The security expert also said the proposed reserve force would complement ongoing discussions on state policing and other security reforms by providing additional manpower and resilience during national emergencies.
"As Nigeria rethinks its security framework and searches for innovative solutions to evolving threats, the creation of a military reserve force should no longer be viewed as an option. It should be regarded as a strategic necessity," he stated.
Oluwole also paid tribute to serving military personnel, commending their sacrifices and urging them to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability and respect for the rule of law while adapting to evolving security threats. He stressed that the future of Nigeria's security would require stronger collaboration among the military, intelligence agencies, law enforcement bodies, local communities and emerging security institutions.
The retired officer concluded that while history would remember victories against terrorism and criminality, it would also judge the country's ability to build stronger institutions and leave behind a sustainable security framework for future generations. Professionalism is what matters most. If professionalism keeps diminishing with every change in government where Junior ranking officers are chosen as chiefs thus retiring active senior officers in one fell swoop, it won't matter whether we have Military reserves or not. Have you ever seen Israel, US, UK choose Junior ranking officers to become Military chief thereby retiring senior officers with wealth of Military and combat experience? |
