Eight passengers were reportedly kidnapped on Thursday by some gunmen who hijacked a bus on Igboho-Igbeti Road, Oyo State. A source said the kidnappers emerged from a bush at the Old Oyo National Park and stopped the bus. They asked passengers of the vehicle to alight. He said the victims were forced into a vehicle that the hoodlums parked by the roadside, adding that the the bus occupants were from Igboho and Ogbooro towns. “We have had cases of one or two people being kidnapped in this area before. They were released after ransoms were paid. This is the first time all passengers in a bus would be kidnapped. Other road users have abandoned the route for fear of becoming victims of those hoodlums,” he added. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, however, said two people were kidnapped. He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abiodun Odude, had deployed men in the area to search for the victims. Ajisebutu said, “We are aware of the incident, but it was only two victims that were involved. We have dispatched our men to the area to fish out the kidnappers and ensure the rescue of the victims.” http://punchng.com/eight-passengers-kidnapped-in-oyo/ |

Worried by the sudden alleged disappearance of 150,000 dollars from the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) to the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) the House of Representatives on Wednesday moved to probe the matter. The House also resolved to summon the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung and Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN officials. This followed a motion under matters of urgent national importance by Rep. Douye Diri (PDP-Bayelsa) during plenary. Moving the motion, Diri noted the reports published on various news outlet where the IAAF reportedly paid the sum of 150,000 dollars to AFN, instead of 15,000 dollars which was its annual grant to member federation for the year 2017. He said, according to the reports, the IAAF accountants later discovered the error and subsequently asked AFN to refund the excess payment, but the money seemed to have disappeared into thin air. “Informed that some board members of the AFN are calling for an emergency congress to look into the scandal and have faulted the sport minister , Solomon Dalung who was said to have set up a committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the missing grant” He expressed worry over allegations that sometime last year, the recipient of the money might have used his private account to collect the money from IAAF. This he said happened, when the sports minister dissolved boards of various sports Federations. The lawmaker further expressed worry that in this era of the operation of Treasury Single Account (TSA) by all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the country, monies can be received and spent so easily, contrary to extant laws. “The image of the country is not only being tarnished by the failure of the AFN to refund the excess payment at the instance of the IAAF,Nigeria also runs the risk of being banned from international competitions.” He also expressed concern about the effect such a ban will have on the youth of the country who see sports as a viable means of livelihood. The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara. The House therefore, mandated its Committee on Sports to carry out forensic audit on the alleged looting of the excess grant payment and determine steps to be taken to refund the money to the IAAF to prevent Nigeria being banned. The Committee would also determine measures to be put in place, to prevent such infractions in future. The House also resolved to invite the Minister of Youth and Sports, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Central Bank of Nigeria and any other connected parties to explain their roles in the matter. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/alleged-disappearance-150k-iaaf-money-reps-set-probe-afn/ Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has said that a lot of “fake marriages’’ are taking place between Nigerians and foreigners in the country. Mr Muhammad Babandede, Comptroller General of the agency stated this on Wednesday in Abuja, saying that male foreigners were mostly involved in the act. He spoke at an operational review meeting with Zonal Coordinators and State Comptrollers of the agency at its national headquarters. Babandede said their aim was to cheat the conditions for the issuance of residence and work permits to foreigners by the agency. “We have observed that foreigners, especially men, are trying to beat the system of issuance of residence permits. “A lot of fake or `arrangee’ marriages are going on, and that would give them permission to stay in this country without much liabilities. “The advantage is that when you are the spouse of a Nigerian, you have no limitation on the job you will do; you don’t have to pay residence permit fees; it is easier for you to stay. “So, we are beginning to face difficulties because many people are becoming married on temporary ground,’’ Babandede said. The NIS boss said the agency had arrested some culprits, and would tighten the conditions for the issuance of permits to check the abuse. He said that as part of the measures to check the abuse, the agency would henceforth monitor marriages between Nigerians and foreigners in the country. “We will not allow any person to come for holiday marriage, because we have also observed that people just come on holidays, arrange marriages in Nigeria and go back. “We will not allow that anymore; you have to stay for a period of six months after marriage before you get our residence permit. “You have to also enter with permission to stay in Nigeria, so you must come with the residency visa; you can’t come as a tourist and get married,’’ he said. Babandede further said that the agency was also planning to restrict foreign spouses to jobs for which Nigerians lacked the requisite skills and qualifications. He stated that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Interior and the NIS, was looking into the issue, which he described as a national security threat. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/03/fake-marriages-taking-place-nigeria-says-immigration-boss/

A final year student of Accounting at the Osun State University, Yemi Olaniyan, whose family said he disappeared from the Ojodu Police Station in Lagos State, has come out of hiding. The student was presented to journalists by the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, at the police headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday. Olaniyan resurfaced two weeks after he was declared missing by his family. He claimed to have left Osogbo for Lagos on February 28, ostensibly to submit an application for Industrial Training with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in Yaba, Lagos. Olaniyan said he informed a female acquaintance simply called Oyin that he would spend the night at Ojodu Police Station in Lagos later that day, but he confessed to have later changed his mind, claiming he spent the night at a shopping complex, from where he allegedly left for Ilorin the following morning. He said he started doing “email job” in Ilorin, Kwara State, to raise his school fees which he said he lost to the MMM Ponzi scheme. Olaniyan said, “I went to Lagos and it was getting late. I could not return to Osogbo that day. I decided to go to Ojodu Police Station to pass the night. “One of my friends, a lady called me and I told her that since I could not make it back to Osogbo that day, I decided to pass the night at Ojodu Police Station. “After speaking to her, I changed my mind. I just looked for a space at a shopping complex and I passed the night there. “First thing the following morning, I got a free ride going to Ilorin. When I got to Ilorin, I started doing menial job to raise money. “I had to work to raise money because I have spent my school fees. I used my school fees for MMM and I lost the money. “I didn’t deliberately mislead the public. My friend that released the information online later called and said I should return home. “She said SSS people were on her trail. She said she would commit suicide if I didn’t return. Because of that threat, I left Ilorin and went to one of our neighbours, who is a retired officer of SSS. “The man, after listening to my story, led me to the SSS office. I am indeed very sorry for whatever embarrassment that misinformation might have caused the Police.” The CP said the boy turned himself in to the Department of State Services and the operatives of the DSS brought him to the Police. Adeoye stated that the information that Olaniyan spent the night at the Police station and that his whereabouts became unknown because the Police had harmed him was incorrect. The CP said, “Findings showed that the boy paid fees last when he was in 200 level and he is now in 400 level. “The information in the public was tilting towards Police harming the boy when he never slept at the station.” It will be recalled that the Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof. Labode Popoola, had in 2016, disclosed that students of the university owed the school over N1bn. He said most of them invested in MMM and lost their fees to the Ponzi scheme. http://punchng.com/missing-uniosun-student-reappears-says-i-went-hustling-after-losing-my-school-fees-to-mmm/
