Many people want to start their own business. This is more so in developing countries like Nigeria where the country is currently plagued with recession. Unemployment is on the rise in the continent as many people are being laid-off daily while some who are employed are underpaid, hence, the zeal to start business so as to be independent. The following are pitfalls to avoid when choosing small scale business 1 Avoid business that involves ACCOMMODATION costs as this alone may eat your entire capital. Look for alternatives like online shops in popular sites like konga, Jumia, Alibaba and others. These sites only charge you per product sold unlike physical shops where you have to pay for at least a year or two rents. You can also build a container and look for an empty land in front of a house and pay the owner stipends. 2 Stock products that people consume daily: As I always say, food business is a business that never dies if properly managed. You can set up a grocery store in a residential area. Make sure your price is competitive and augment that with quality customer service. 3 Locate your business properly: Location is very crucial while trying to site a business. Look for a place where your products/brands are needed the most, when this is properly done, you will avoid pitfall of low turnover. For example, Bar might not sell in certain area while it will be like hot cake elsewhere. 4 Avoid or minimise borrowing for expansion: Don’t borrow money that attracts much interests, you can borrow from family and friends. 5 Do not sell on credit: Credit destabilize the growth of your small business, it also damages previously healthy relationships with defaulting clients. 6 Give quality brand/service a priority: People careless about price when you have a quality product but cheap and inferior brand/product will destroy your reputation. So be watchful of this. 7 Smile when offering service and don’t forget to say thank you: I observe that many small scale business in Lagos where I reside handle customer service with levity. Agriculture in Nigeria as i said in the past is the new crude. Although this has always been what Nigeria is known for before the discovery of crude oil which derailed the consciousness and conscience of leaders Africa which ultimately led to the abandonment of this lucrative venture. I am writing this article based on my personal experience in the business of palm oil processing because that is my father’s business and having worked with him for over 20 years in this, I can consider myself as an authority of sort in the business of palm oil processing. In the business of palm oil processing, everything is a cash cow, there is no wastage because you make huge amount of money from oil, palm kernel and the shaft. This goes to show that palm oil processing business is very profitable. What makes the business more profitable is because of the high demands for the product across the world . This is because of its multipurpose function, ranging from food, raw materials for industries and others. There are various aspect of this business that you can tap into. The aspect you choose largely depends on your financial capability, if you have a lot of money to invest, you can cultivate your own farm, start processing or just buy the finished products from the producers for resell purpose. You don’t need to have your own farm to start processing factory, you can simply rent from owners who are ready to give it out to factory owners and pay him/her yearly. In this case, you will be the one to harvest it from the palm trees, prepare the fruits and take them to factory for processing like my dad is doing. Renting or owing a farm and processing factory is more profitable because you own everything concerning the fruit-Palm Kernel, The oil and the shaft , but it is capital intensive. Here are what you need to set up a palm oil processing factory; 1.Big Drum: This is used to boil the palm fruit after which it is moved into digester for grinding. Welders can help with the construction. You can have as many as you want depending on the size of the factory. 2.Digester: This is constructed by welders. Note, not every welder can construct this, there are specialists who do it. You can see them in Ondo State, South South and South Eastern part of the country. Digester is for grinding of the kernel so as to sift the skin of the palm fruits from the kernel. The fruits is cooked and hauled directly from the fire into the digester. 3. Engine: You can either buy a lister engine or any other engine that is powerful to roll the digester. The size of the engine you need depends on the size of the digester and how big you want to run the factory. The following are some striving businesses with high turnover during the on-going recession in Nigeria. 1 Food business: Either raw or prepared food, you must make sales all the time. No matter how broke a person is, when his or her belly needs refill (hunger) such a person will find a way to get food to eat. Research has shown that food sellers don’t go without sales under any condition. For example, garri is a popular consumable in almost all households in Nigeria therefore; sellers of garri will always make sales no matter the condition or situation of the economy. Other examples are bread, rice, beans, semovita, yam and more.. 2 Transportation: As the country goes dip into recession, many car owners are seeking alternatives by taking public transportation, making that sector more bubbly with patronage. The best time to go into transport business is now. Also, you can get a car and register it with Uber and get someone to drive it for you if you cannot do it yourself. The last time I checked, an average Uber driver in Nigeria makes between N150 to 200 thousand Naira or more in a month. 3 Dry Cleaning Business: People look good without season. Therefore no matter the meltdown, people manage to spend some money on washing and ironing of their cloths. Setting up laundry business is a good idea since it is not capital intensive to setup if you want to start small. These days it is a lot easier to move funds from one bank to another if you are technologically informed and equipped. Gone are the days of joining a long queue in banking halls to carry out transactions like moving funds. If you will spare yourself any hassle, there are more than one ways to transfer money. Use short codes: Most banks have come up with easy to remember codes with which you can make that transfer while seating in your homes. GTB for instance use the code *737*1*AMT*ACCT NO to GTBanks, *737*2… for other banks, First Bank uses *894* AMT* ACCT. Some banks allow free transfer but you may have to check with your bank to verify that. Link your Accounts: Check with your bank to provide you with details on how to link your accounts. Losing your job can be devastating . However, this is the time to reflect on your career so far. There are many ways to deal with job loss .The following are how to deal with the situation. 1 Take a vacation: sounds crazy right? Going on vacation is one of the best ways to take your mind off your previous experience. By moving away from the environment where you previously worked for some time, it gives you the ability to relax your mind thereby giving you fresh start ability. In this period, you need to empty your mind so as to embrace new thoughts and perspectives. 2 Update your contact information: If you have a good relationship with clients where you previously worked, it is the time to let them know your new contacts-email, phone number etc if they are different from the one they had. Research has shown that most clients love to help a staff of a company that left the company that offer them services especially if such sacked staff had cordial relationship with them. Apart from that, if you want to start your business, they can either get you clients or even give you projects to handle without necessarily pitching for such. 3 Talk to your friends and previous colleagues: It is better you let them know that you are currently not working and opened to new job offers so that they can connect you to places where there are vacancies or tip you up when there is any job opening in where they work. 4 Start your business: The only way to have financial freedom to have control of your money and the only way to have control of your income flow is to have your business. I have never seen any man or woman become rich by working for someone else. You can only be comfortable working for other companies, you cannot be rich without investing in your personal business. This is the right time to also kill fears, I have realised that many people can even do better when they run their business than working for others, but fears will not make them take actions to start. Come to think of it, most CEOs only get the contract and the execution is left to you as a staff, if you can execute contracts for your employer effortlessly, that means you will do excellently well with your business, take a BOLD step. Disasters will never tell you when they will strike, they just happen and we are left to either regret for not doing the right thing or thank our stars for building a shield around us and our businesses . One thing many entrepreneurs in Africa take for granted is insurance, it is always the least bottom of to-do list of the few people who take it a little serious. In fact, there have been many occasions where fire disasters razed small business owners’ premises in popular markets like Agege, Eko Market, Sabongri market and other popular markets in Nigeria where many small businesses are concentrated. In all the occasions, findings revealed that those businesses do not have any form of insurance to bail them out of the disasters; hence they have to start all over again. Access to fund is one of the major challenges confronting entrepreneurs across the world. It is even worst for start-ups because they don’t have anything apart from juicy ideas to show intending investors in their dreams. Investors on the other hand will likely ask for what the owner of the dream has done to set his dream in motion before they commit their money in such a project. Therefore, it is important to look for alternatives to push your ideas through personal efforts before calling for investors. The following are alternative sources of funding for entrepreneurs; • Go into partnership: Many people are skeptical to go into partnership because they believe it ends in legal tussle or quarrel between partners; yes it is true if it is not done properly. When going into partnership, you need to do all the paper works with terms and conditions of the partnership contract clearly spelt out. This should be done by investment lawyers of both partners so as to avoid conflict. Don’t be selfish, if you have a beautiful business idea, you can meet a partner who has the fund and he is ready to sponsor such idea with terms and conditions favourable to both of you. Finally, before you run to banks for loan, make sure you have explored the aforementioned alternatives because banks’ conditions for loans are not really favourable to entrepreneurs especially in Africa. In Nigeria, interest rate is about 20% to 30% which is ridiculous. The same story is the case of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya and others. Culture is simply defined as a way of life of a group of people in a particular location. Cultural practices are carried out either consciously or subconsciously –that means this practice revolves around the lives of the people in a routinely executed manner. With that simple explanation, it is now glaring that a product/service that fits into the culture of a people will definitely not fail because patronizing such products/brands become a conscious or subconscious thing for them. This is why researching a peoples’ culture is key to a successfully executed marketing strategy. For example, a larger percentage of Nigerians love to drink beer. If you go to Eastern part of the country, the popular STAR, Gulder, Heineken etc are not as popular as HERO because HERO beer is produced by SAB-MILLER in the region which ultimately make its circulation more than Guinness and Nigerian breweries’ brands. Now, every other brands are trying to compete with the Eastern HERO brand because they know that the culture of the majority of the people in Eastern Nigeria revolves around beer, they love to drink beer, hence the aggressive marketing abilities of other brands to penetrate the region . Some brands of Nigerian Breweries like Gulder and Life beer have tried their best to win the people in the region over to themselves , using incentives(Culture) because an average Igbo man love to save money in various ways, now they are gradually drinking Nigerian Breweries’ Brands across the region unlike before. The Igbos don’t just drink, they have their time for drinking which is mostly on SUNDAYS after church, as a brand that is targeting this group, you must understand this secret in order to fit your brand into their naturally instigated behavior and that is how you can capture their minds. Many times as entrepreneur, you wrongly measure yourself by industry standards .This is absolutely wrong. Let me tell you categorically that there is nothing like INDUSTRY STANDARDS, what only exists are the standards you set for yourself and your business. The fact that other companies are doing things the same way does not mean you should follow their steps, rather create a solution that is “abnormal” as often described by people who are used to industry rules. Before the existence of Starbucks, nobody knew that ordinary coffee could be sold in such price and pride until starbuck’s owner found a way of providing such ordinary services in an extraordinary way. Some entrepreneurs make mistakes of focusing on what they are selling rather than shifting their attention to HOW they sell what they sell because the HOW always wins rather than WHAT .This cut across every facets of business either services, sales, consulting, engineering, technology etc.The HOW rather than WHAT is what sets you apart from others.Read more http://naijaentrepreneur.com/2017/03/16/to-create-a-niche-for-your-business-unfollow-rulescreate-your-standards/ |
Every business plan must include branding strategy in addition to other parts. It is a documented plan of how you will apply your brand strategically throughout the company over time. A good branding strategy lists the one or two most important elements of your product or service, describes your company’s ultimate purpose in the world and defines your target customer. The result is a blueprint for what’s most important to your company and your customer. Many startups have the notion that creating a branding strategy is a big deal and very ambiguous or complicated , but that is not true. Here’s how you do it: Read here http://naijaentrepreneur.com/2017/03/18/how-to-build-a-winning-brand-strategy/ |

Attaining the superstar status is not a day’s job. It is a continuous effort put together overtime, which later attracts an audience that ultimately becomes loyal fans. One thing that is very sure is that a loyal fan can spend his last dime to acquire what carries the name of his “idol”, who is the superstar in question. For example, Kanye West’s Yeezy Boost sold out few minutes after they were released. His fans sleep outside just to get their hands on a pair or two whenever he releases a version. In many cases, fights ensue among wannabe owners of Yeezy boosts because they are sold-out in minutes. Public holiday is defined as a work free day. It is a day set aside by government of a nation, state or local to mark special occasions. As an entrepreneur, especially if you deal with essential commodities like food and other things that are needed to run daily lives, there should be no holiday for you this is because NEEDS for your products don’t go on BREAK, so why should you?. Today, Easter Monday in Lagos Nigeria where i live, there is a popular attitude of vendors that is inimical to business growth which is getting hooked with holiday fever. I stepped out to buy airtime for my phone , i discovered that none of the vendors opened their shops apart from a Mallam who is a security officer and a trader in front of my estate. On getting there, i found out that we were over 50 in a queue waiting to buy one or two things from his shop because all the other people who sell similar products around did not open shops because of holiday. The past few days are serious harvest for this young mallam because he is the only one available within the vicinity during this period. Recently, the almighty google has been advertising on social media and electronic media. Google is perhaps the father and mother of internet but yet, they are still advertising. The question that comes to mind is, if google can advertise itself, who are you as a brand not to advertise? . I ask this question because google has all the answers to questions in this world, yet they are still pushing for more visibility and awareness on what it can do to you in terms of online information surfing. In these days of internet, a brand that refuses to communicate constantly with its targets through online media and others is wasting its time because consumers’ buying pattern has changed and the internet has reshaped consumer buying pattern, hence, you must meet your targets wherever their passion is tilting because that is where they spend their time or even work. Every year, there is a multi-billion dollars worldwide expenditure on advertising, why? because of the tremendous power, influence and impact of effective communication. There is serious need for effective communication between those who have something to offer and those who need what they have to offer. Many people are experiencing limited sales in their businesses because of communication gap between the target and the brand/business owner. So many potential clients cannot be connected to us because they don’t know what we have to offer. People will not just buy your products, you have the responsibility to introduce your company, its services what you have done and what you can do etc. Aggressive marketing is the ability to identify and reach out to potential clients and markets through constant communications using the media as a tool to reach out to the target audience. Growing up in the 1990’s in Nigeria, if your parents drive a Peugeot 504 or a 505, they were assumed to be wealthy. Peugeot was the favourite car for both individual and the Government of Nigeria and its various agencies. I remember when the former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu gave one Peugeot car each to Eyimba of Aba when they won one of the local leagues cup, it became talk of the town. Peugeot was a dream car for every young man or woman at the time. Business for them was flourishing because Peugeot was a brand of choice. What Peugeot management failed to realise was the need to innovate to suite the needs of the new generation. When brands like Toyota, Mercedes Benz etc started reinventing themselves to suit the new lifestyle of the people, Peugeot failed to have foresight , they were relaxed because they felt that since they were the cars of choice, it would be difficult for Government and its agencies to relegate them to the background and go for other brands, they lied. Distribution business simply means buying from the producer of a product for the purpose of redistribution to retailers for profit. This can be done in whole sale or retail depending on what you want and how strong your pocket is. In Lagos for example, most production companies are situated in the city. These companies require the service of distributors to help take their products to the end users across the city and to other states in the country. The business of distribution is one of the most profitable SMEs you can venture into and you will never have any regret because distributors make a lot of money on daily basis. A friend of mine who work with a distributor company in Lagos told me he sell an average of 500 to 700 thousands Naira daily within Lagos. They distribute one of the popular beverages in the country. The same goes to people who are into distribution of things like eggs, sanitary pad, sachet water, drinks etc across the country. I know many people think oh, how can i start when i don’t even have the money. Let me shock you, do you know that you can be a distributor to many companies without having a dime of your own? oh yes, it is possible. All you need to do is to have a well drafted proposal, submit it to the company ,what most of them will do is to request for a guarantor who will stand for you and when you meet up with that, you become their distributor. It is that simple!. A course mate of mine back in the University started that way and today he is a big boys in town. Distribution business is a game of numbers, the most important thing you need is not where to get the products you want to distribute, it is the buyers that you need most.Hence your advertising or marketing skills must be on point. Many new production companies are always looking for distributors who are ready to work. Companies in this category relax their requirements for you to be their distributor because of their desperation to break into the market. They only stiff their requirements after they gain their feet in the market. So you have to take advantage of them when they are new and sign up as a distributor before it is too late. Here are what you need to be a distributor. Click here to read http://naijaentrepreneur.com/2017/04/16/how-to-start-distribution-business-in-nigeria-with-ease/

When it comes to fashion, Nigeria is number one because we love to party and also show-off our unique dress sense. Previously, the love for foreign products was very high in the country. Nigerians are beginning to buy what is made in Nigeria. The Love for foreign products , especially shoes and other fashion items has dropped drastically. The market is now widely opened for footwear producers in the country. Plantain is one food that is consumed by majority of people around the world. Plantain is prepared in various forms, while some people love it roasted or cooked, others love it fried(chips), it can also be used as flour for baking and other purposes . In urban centers, plantain chips is very popular, it is a common site in traffic and supermarkets. Plantain farming is very lucrative if you do it right. Plantain basically start yielding fruits after three months of planting depending on the breed. Here is how to start plantain farming in Nigeria ; 1 Buy/lease a piece of land either close to river or in swampy area: Plantain don’t do too well in dry land because it requires a lot of water to grow.In case you don’t have a land or you lack the financial muscle to acquire one, you can go into partnership with a land owner with the arrangement of sharing the produce after harvest in percentage which both of you will agree on. If you cant do irrigation , it is better you plant your sucker in a cool environment or semi-swamp. They grow and yield better in such land. Plantain don,t do very well in yellow sand because of the dry nature of such sand which mitigates its growth and fruit production.I am talking practical here because my dad has been into plantain farming for over 50 years . This is not theory, plantain grow better in a cool soil. Read more http://naijaentrepreneur.com/2017/04/15/how-to-start-plantain-farming-in-nigeria-with-little-capital/
