Grasscutter or Greater Cane Rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) is one of two species of cane rats. Grasscutters occur in grassland or in wooded savanna throughout the humid and sub humid areas of Africa south of the Sahara. They often live in forest-savanna habitats where grass is present. Cane rats can grow to nearly 2 ft (0.61 m) in length and weigh a little less than 8.6 kg. It has rounded ears, a short nose, and coarse bristly hair. Its forefeet are smaller than its hind feet, each with three toes.



Rearing of grasscutter is very profitable, less stress (the stress of feeding them is less, when compared to other livestock rearing like fishery, piggery, poultry etc.), and highly productive. Grasscutter has a high reproductive rate, because they are polygamous in nature, if one rears a male alongside with four females for a year, it’s possible to get 50-56 grasscutters and each grasscutter price ranges from #4000 – #6500 sometimes they can go for #10000.

The key is to use local materials in order to keep down construction costs. The building should be ventilated and offer enough light to facilitate rearing activities. The term ‘aquaculture’ covers all forms of cultivation of aquatic animals and plants in fresh-, brackish- and saltwater. Aquaculture has the
same objective as agriculture, namely, to increase the production of
food above the level that would be produced naturally in fish farming ponds. Today, aquaculture is responsible for an ever-increasing share of global aquatic
food production, which has increased from 3.9 percent in 1970 to 31.9
percent in 2003 (FAO, 2005).

As in agriculture, fish farming techniques include:
Removal of unwanted plants and animals
Replacement by desirable species of fish
Improvement of these species by crossbreeding and selection
Increase of nutrient availability by the use of fertilisers and feeds
Fish farming can be combined with agriculture, animal husbandry and
irrigation practices, which can lead to better utilisation of local resources and ultimately to higher production and net profits. This practice is called ‘integrated fish farming’



Advantages of fish farming
1. Fish provides high quality animal protein for human consumption.

2. A farmer can often integrate fish farming into the existing farm to create
additional income and improve its water management.

4. The fish produced in a pond are the owner’s property; they are secure and

6. Effective land use: effective use of marginal land e.g. land that is too poor,
or too costly to drain for agriculture can be profitably devoted to fish farming provided that it is suitably prepared.

are earthen ponds. When evaluating and selecting sites for earthen
fishponds, the main physical factors to consider are the land area, the
water supply, and the soil. The following points should be kept in mind
for each.
Land area

not generally suitable for building ponds. A slope of about 1% is
considered ideal.
• Determine that the area is large enough for your present plans and
for any future expansion.
• The area should not be prone to flooding.
• The area should not be subject to pollution in runoff from adjacent
land.
• If possible, the land must be slightly lower than the water source,
so that the ponds can be filled by gravity rather than by pumping.
Supplying water by gravity greatly reduces energy inputs and
operating costs.
• In most cases the larger the surface area (with gentle slope), the
better. This is only true if the land and water are not expensive.

Buying chicks from a reputable feed store, breeder or hatchery and providing them a clean, warm brooder with fresh water and feed will usually result in healthy chicks, but sometimes things go wrong. Here’s a guide to seven common problems and how to treat them naturally—without antibiotics or chemicals.

1. Coccidiosis
This is the No. 1 cause of death in baby chicks and a highly contagious parasitic disease of the intestinal tract. Red-tinted, bloody stools and lethargy are common symptoms. If you suspect a chick has coccidiosis, separate it from the flock and feed equal parts chick feed and milk mixed with plain yogurt. This will cause runny stools, which will help to flush the parasite from the intestines. Sprinkle some probiotic powder into the feed to replenish good bacteria and feed some oregano oil and cinnamon, both of which act as natural antibiotics.
While medicated feed is available for prevention of coccidiosis in chicks, a natural option includes adding apple cider vinegar, probiotic powder and garlic to your chicks’ diet to build strong immune systems.

2. Marek’s Disease
This term refers to several highly contagious viral syndromes that cause tumors and/or paralysis in birds. Partial immunity is achieved by vaccination or allowing healthy chicks limited exposure to the virus, which resides in nearly every chicken yard. As a preventative measure, ensure the brooder is clean and help chicks build strong immune systems by adding apple cider vinegar, garlic and probiotic powder to their diet.
There is no treatment for Marek’s disease, but separating infected chicks and ensuring they continue to eat, drink and keep their immune systems strong is their best chance of survival.

The U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) in collaboration with Kebbi State Government (KBSG) invites African cooperatives, producer groups, and enterprises to submit proposals for grant financing and local support for innovative solutions that extend their capabilities to increase revenues, create jobs, improve farmer incomes, and achieve sustainable market-based growth.

Proposals will only be accepted from registered agricultural cooperatives, producer groups, and agricultural processors in KEBBI STATE working directly in the RICE, DAIRY AND GROUNDNUT sector(s).

Grant awards range in value from US $100,000 to a maximum $250,000. (Award amounts are based on the level of impact to revenue growth, jobs creation, income to farmers and sustainable growth.
