In his reaction to the rejection of Ayodele Fayose as a presidential aspirant by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the renowned human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) recalled that Mr. Fayose was facing multiple charges of murder and corruption in the Ekiti State High Court and Federal High Court before his controversial re-election as a governor in June 2014. We join Mr. Falana in commending the PDP for turning down the presidential bid of the governor as Nigerians are not likely to vote for ex-convicts and criminal elements in the coming 2019 general elections. In attacking Mr. Falana over his comment, Mr. Fayose has asked the lawyer whether he is now working for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Of course, one does not need to be a staff of EFCC to know that Mr. Fayose's murder and corruption cases will resume next year. Mr. Fayose's statement, made through his press assistant, Lere Olayinka, is very laughable. If Mr. Fayose has forgotten too quickly, the Ekiti people have not forgotten that on April 21, 2014, Mr. Olayinka had, in a strongly worded petition to the Inspector-General, pleaded passionately for the arrest of Mr. Fayose over his role in the cold murder of Tunde Omojola, Ayo Daramola, Taiwo Fasuba and others by a notorious killer squad set up and funded by Mr. Fayose. We are not unaware that Mr. Olayinka was bribed with his current position to silence him and prevent from pressing for Mr. Fayose's charges for murder. Unlike Mr. Olayinka, the Ekiti people are anxiously waiting for Mr. Fayose to complete his term in October 2018 so that he can explain the reasons for killing some illustrious sons of Ekiti State. Happily, the move by Mr. Fayose to have the murder cases dismissed has been frustrated by the bereaved families of the deceased. The Ekiti people are watching Justice Segun Ogunyemi, who is conducting the mock trial, and the lawyers involved in the shady deal. The Ekiti people are also aware that the case of N1.3 billion fraud pending against Mr. Fayose at the Federal High Court sitting at Ado Ekiti was struck out in 2014 due to the immunity presently enjoyed by Governor Fayose. Since the leopard can never change his color, Fayose has continued to commit more criminal offenses. Already one of his agents, Abiodun Agbele, is standing trial at the Federal High Court at Abuja for colluding with Mr. Fayose to loot about N1.2 billion from what is now known as Dasukigate. In an attempt to mislead the Nigerian people, Mr. Fayose claimed that the N1.2 billion traced to his account was “donated” to his political campaign by Zenith Bank. Although the bank has denied Mr. Fayose's claim, Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence, who collected the money from Colonel Sambo Dasuki has admitted that he handed it over to Mr. Fayose, who decided to keep the loot in the Zenith Bank branch at Ado Ekiti. Apart from the ongoing trial of Mr. Agbele for the loot, about 6 properties bought by Mr. Fayose at Abuja and Lagos have been traced by the EFCC and forfeited to the federal government on the orders of the Federal High Court. Mr. Fayose has also been recently fingered in the criminal diversion of the London/Paris loan refund paid to the Ekiti State government by the Buhari administration for payment of arrears of salaries of workers. It is common knowledge in Ekiti State that part of the loan refund has been stolen by Mr. Fayose who is still owing salary arrears of not less than 5 months. Mr. Fayose has said that the arrest of his finance commissioner and accountant-general over the looting of the loan refund is an act of “political vendetta” we are waiting to know whether the money diverted from the loan was also "donated" to his political campaign by the management of Zenith Bank Plc! We recall that after his impeachment by the Ekiti State House of Assembly in 2006, Mr. Fayose ran away to escape trial for murder and corruption. According to him, he put himself In the boot of the car which drove him out of the governor's lodge at Ado Ekiti. We want to assure him that he will not be allowed to escape upon the completion of his term next year. However, let Mr. Fayose continue to deceive himself by parading himself as an opposition politician so as to give the impression that he is being persecuted when the day of reckoning comes. But we can assure him that he will be prosecuted at the appropriate courts at the right time for the cold and callous murder of innocent people, money laundering of N1.2 billion of Dasukigate, and corruption by looting the treasury of Ekiti State. In respect of the murder charges Mr. Lere Olayinka will be a prosecution witness on the basis of his own petition to the Inspector-General of Police. After all, Mr. Olayinka knew how Mr. Fayose and his accomplices killed unarmed people in Ekiti State. http://saharareporters.com/2017/10/03/fayoses-impending-trial-murder-money-laundering-and-corruption-adeola-idowu

For Dino Melaye, that rambunctious and swashbuckling senator from Kogi State, the cloud still looks ominous. For someone who relishes hugging the limelight, what he is passing through presently bodes a fatal dent on that raunchy life. Melaye is besieged. He is beleaguered. He is battered. He is storm-tossed. Dino Melaye is distressed. He is like a cornered rat and gradually, he has been watching as all escape routes are plugged by those that want to see his back from the Senate. As he makes frantic moves to avoid INEC and its recall papers, Dino cuts a sorry picture of a self-propelled fugitive who allowed his vanity, hubris and ego to dismantle him. With all the desperate moves Melaye made last week to evade INEC’s service of his recall papers, Dino showed that he has exhausted every prank to avoid the evil day. Now, what remains is for him to surrender and subject himself to the legal terms of recall and to defeat it not through such puerile pranks as he is now making but through well marshaled tactics that show he was wrongly set upon for recall, as he is crying all over town. No doubt, he had been fervently praying that this cup passes him by, but the cup has stubbornly stuck to him. He had threatened that no one could recall him from the Senate where he plays the backup role to Bukola Saraki, the heavily dented president of the Senate. In fact, he and Saraki exchange that role to each other; serving to buoy each other in moments of crisis. They have complemented each other in the many battles that border on their indiscretion which they had been fighting since Saraki usurped the Senate leadership. In this matter of Melaye’s recall, they have both laughed it off as a sick joke that will never see the light of the day. But, from all points, they seem to have boasted just too early and that is why today, Dino Melaye has been alternating several rat holes in a bid to stave off his impending recall. He is no more the loud, noisome, boastful stage actor in the Senate. He has lost his swagger as he looked drained out the moment the Federal High Court ordered his recall to continue. In most of the Senate sittings in recent times, Melaye has been conspicuously missing in action. Dino is faced with a problem that has just refused to back off even with the seemingly impregnable assurance of Saraki that no one can recall him. Since his Kogi West senatorial constituents threatened to send him home from the Senate, both Dino and Saraki have tried all known means to beat off that menacing threat, to no avail. At first, Dino, in his usual masking manner, had laughed off the threat. He had waved it off as another feverish symptom that had hit his traducers. He had boasted that his people, who are as riled as Nigerians, over the nuisance he has willingly elected to constitute in the Senate and on the national stage, lack the capacity to recall him from the Senate. Sure, he was right to have woven the feeling of impregnability around himself because previous recall efforts had never seen the light of the day. The difficulty in mustering the required number of constituents to effectively carry out a recall gave Dino the confidence that his people will fail in this task. But today, Dino looks like a cornered rat because his people have shown a clear readiness to cross hitherto impregnable fortresses against recall processes in their vow to see his back from the Senate. In the sequel, Dino has lost his allure and is no more seen reveling and masking as he was known for. His notorious foul mouth seems to have been capped. He is no more treating issues to the same casual, dismissive ambience for which he was noted. He has no more time for the kind of annoying petulance with which he treated issues about his persona and the Senate. To put it mildly, Dino Melaye is greatly troubled and when one is greatly troubled, he finds no time for masking and reveling. Dino has lost the appetite for jokes and clowning. His worries are exacerbated by the fact that he had tried all tricks to shake off the recall bait but none is working. He had bluffed and huffed but the recall threat, like a stubborn abiku, still tracks him. He had threatened and invoked the powers of the Senate, tucked under the armpits of his master and alter ego, Saraki, but his traducers seem to care less about that. Those that want him out of the Senate have shocked him by mobilizing a number that is over the constitutionally prescribed threshold. In apparent awe and shock, he had claimed that they forged such numbers but then he had been spiritedly running away from the due diligence of proving his claim. On my last check, Dino Melaye has been touring and window-shopping the courts to stop his recall process. That was a seeming leak-proof strategy he borrowed from Saraki. Yes, the courts have only offered him a temporary reprieve by holding up the recall process. But then, that proved to be mere postponement of the inevitable doomsday when the court recently ordered the recall process to continue. INEC, which in deference to the initial court order, stayed the process, having gotten the ruling of the court to restart the process, had been having difficulties serving Melaye a recall notice because Dino Melaye had been on the run. He had practically gone AWOL. He is running frantically away from the recall. He has shed the pretension to invincibility and now lives on devising newer ways of evading INEC. He now shuns his favorite playground, which is Saraki’s Senate. From all seeming indices, Melaye is holed up in thin air! Melaye now harbors a consuming fear of INEC. He doesn’t want to be served the notice of his recall because he knows that nothing will save him from recall if the process were to start. We are not seeing his usual clowning on national stages again because he faces a more urgent threat that will rob him of the klieg lights for his nuanced shows. Dino knows that he will be practically finished if he is recalled from the Senate. He doesn’t even believe in the many boasts he had previously issued that no one could recall hm. Worse still, he does not even trust the assurance of his master, Saraki, that his recall process would end as a huge joke. He doesn’t feel secure trusting his own tactics. Most importantly, he knows that his claim that enemies cooked up names to meet the constitutional requirement for his recall is mere bunkum otherwise, he would have by now, leveraged on the process to prove his claim and effectively squelch the recall process. Instead, he resorts to playing pranks, running and hiding in ignominious manners as a way of shaking off a well-articulated process. Last week, INEC stormed the Senate with bags of recall documents for Dino but he sneaked out of the Senate on sighting INEC. He deserted his office and disappeared into thin air. What was chasing Melaye, if not the consequences of his life of vanity? Dino Melaye is running away from his shadows. He is being chased by his hubris. After running away from INEC, he was said to have posted some information on his WhatsApp page to the effect that he had filed an appeal against the Federal High Court ruling that his recall should proceed. He said by virtue of that, that INEC should stop his recall. He even claimed that his recall is a breach of the constitution. A day earlier, he was said to have addressed a press conference where he argued so laughably that since the number of days the constitution set for a recall to take place had elapsed, that his recall had failed. So Dino meant that since he got a court order holding up his recall for the better parts of the constitutionally guaranteed timeline for recall, that he was not recallable again. What a baloney! What crass foolery! What grandiose self-deceit! He conveniently forgot that the same court issued a directive that the constitutionally guaranteed time for his recall starts from the day the court discharged his case. Every recent event surrounding the Melaye recall process suggests that Melaye is almost a goner. He is practically living on borrowed time. No tears for him. He is that proverbial bird that overfed itself and challenged its god to a wrestling contest. He had written the full epistle of his trajectory and his people in Kogi West are merely assisting him to lie on his bed the way he prepared it. That they mustered quite above the constitutional numerical requisite for a recall should have warned Melaye to devour the humble pie and make his peace first with his people and then Nigerians whom he had roundly insulted by his nuisance outings on national issues. The clear fate he is facing now for which he is on the run is totally self-procured. In one of his distressed effusions last week, he blamed virtually everybody except himself for what he is facing. He blamed INEC, Kogi State government and the federal government for his woes but Dino Melaye is a character that willingly set on a course of self-destructing when he became a noisome, uncontrollable obstacle to prudence. He should muster sufficient guts to face his travails and stop thinking he can ward off the determined resolve of his people to do away with him by playing hide and seek. Melaye should face his cup squarely and stop playing childish pranks that will not save him at the end of the day. http://saharareporters.com/2017/10/03/dino-melaye-continues-run-his-shadow-peter-claver-oparah

(1) Is it admittance of guilt...?? (2) When Has Buhari or executive becomes the court After all the name calling of Buhari, Presidency, the executive and co.......they are trying to mellow down....seeking public sympathy. The easiest way to end his case quickly is for him to change his plea from 'not guilty' to 'Guilty as charged" #The innocent souls lost during his wicked reign still cry for justice |
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Ahmed Raji has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently release the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki to attend to his health and in the interest of justice. Raji, a senior counsel to Dasuki, spoke in reaction to a recent statement by Amnesty International (AI), accusing the Buhari administration of secret and illegal detention of many Nigerians. Dasuki is standing trial over allegations of unlawful possession of firearms, money laundering criminal breach of trust amongst others brought against him by the Federal Government in 2015. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and applied for bail which was granted by all the courts. Dasuki, however, is still being detained despite meeting all conditions attached to the bail. But, Raji said that he would not joined issues with either the president or the government but would rather plead that on compassionate ground, Dasuki should be allowed to go on bail or at worse be placed under house arrest. “I hold president Buhari in high esteem, I respect him in his private and official capacity, I have tremendous respect for him and I mean it. And my plea to him is to allow Dasuki to go on bail or at worst be placed under house arrest, be confined to his house”, he told Thisday. “Whatever he might have done wrong in the past outside what we have been told I plead in the name of God that he should be forgiven. I am not confirming that he has done anything wrong but I plead that he be forgiven if at all he had done anything wrong in the past”, he said. He appealed to the government to obey the court orders, adding that it is through the instrumentality of the same court that the fight against corruption would be prosecuted. “All over the world there is what is known as judicial review or administrative action but there is nothing like executive review of the judicial decision. The implication of disobedience of the four court orders is that there appear to be a concept of executive review of judicial actions on Dasuki which is abnormal. “I will only humbly plead with the Federal Government to, in the Interest of Justice and sanctity of law and orderliness, to allow Dasuki to go on bail even if under house arrest.” The SAN admitted that the trial of Dasuki goes beyond ordinary crime because it has doses of politics which at the end of the day may have to be resolved in a manner that will accommodate the political aspect. “It is in the light of the political doses involved that I am pleading that even if it is under house arrest, Dasuki should be released in the interest of justice.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/09/17/dasuki-urgently-needs-bail-counsel-ahmed-raji-begs-buhari/

An aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla, has been asked to furnish the Supreme Court with cases that are being delayed or pending in the apex court, as well as the Court of Appeal. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, made the request to Mr. Obono-Obla in a letter written to him on September 7. Mr. Obono-Obla, a human rights lawyer, is the Special Assistant to the President on Prosecutions. The CJN was responding to a reported media remark by Mr. Obono-Obla that ”corruption and inefficiency were destroying the Nigerian judiciary.” Mr. Obono-Obla was specifically quoted in the Nation newspaper as saying that lawyers and litigants in the country “pay through their noses” to have their cases assigned to judges, adding that there was a case he personally filed at the Supreme Court and ”it is yet to be assigned to a judge after 10 years.” “His Lordship, the Chief Justice of Nigeria is desirous to make a positive change in the judiciary, hence has requested that you please oblige the Honourable Court with details of all your pending or delayed appeals filed at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court since 2007,” Mr. Onnoghen said in the letter issued on his behalf by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hadizatu Mustapha. The letter said that the request was to enable the CJN “take necessary steps to ensure redress.” Meanwhile, Mr. Obono-Obla has said the CJN’s response was commendable, but that the issue at stake wasn’t about him as an individual. “I am not saying that only my cases should be heard; they should hear all cases,” he told PREMIUM TIMES, Tuesday. Mr. Obono-Obla said that he has six cases pending at the Supreme Court and up to five in the Court of Appeal, Abuja. “I don’t want to count the ones I have in the Courts of Appeal in Calabar and in Port Harcourt,” he said. “The system should work so that matters should not linger on in the Supreme Court for more than six months, at most, so that Nigerians could have confidence in the judiciary system. If people don’t have confidence in the judiciary system they begin to resort to self-help and it will not help us.” Mr. Obono-Obla called for a reform that would aid the Supreme Court to dispense justice quickly and effectively. “The Supreme Court shouldn’t burden itself with lots of cases,” he said. “Cases like matrimonial matters and small contractual disputes should terminate in the Court of Appeal. Serious cases bordering on conflicts between the different branches of government, between the federal and state governments could be heard at the Supreme Court. “Alternatively, the states should have their courts of appeal and supreme courts as it is obtainable in the U.S,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/243164-cjn-writes-buharis-adviser-demands-details-delayed-cases-supreme-court.html

Federal High Court Dismisses Senator Melaye’s Lawsuit, Asks INEC To Continue His Recall From The Senate A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed the suit by Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, challenging the validity of the process of recalling him by his constituents. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, in his judgment, ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission “shall proceed with the recall process”. The judgment effectively terminated the earlier ex parte order made by another judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho, on July 6, 2017, directing parties to maintain status quo. But the Justice Dimgba, to whom the case was reassigned, ordered that the process shall only proceed with the recall process, subject to the service of the petition, the full list and signatures of persons in support of the recall process. http://saharareporters.com/2017/09/11/federal-high-court-dismisses-senator-melaye’s-lawsuit-asks-inec-continue-his-recall

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption, PACAC, Professor Itse Sagay, has reacted to a statement against him by the Senate. He mocked the federal lawmakers, saying Nigerians buy clothes they wear. Sagay further advised them to learn how to take criticisms in good faith. Sagay insisted that he would not stop criticizing members of the National Assembly for their expenditure, which he said was adversely affecting the economy. His words: “I criticize them for the huge amount of money they are taking out of the country. “They are creating a situation in which Nigeria does not have enough funds; we have kidnapping, there is Boko Haram, we have militants, armed robbery and so on. “That is basically what I said. I spoke the truth. They have wardrobe allowance, in other words, we are the ones buying clothes for them to wear. “When they arrived Abuja, were they naked? What is their problem?” The legal luminary had lamented that National Assembly allocated N125 billion to themselves alone this year and that while the United States President earns $400,000 per annum, a Nigerian senator earns over $1.7 million. Sagay said besides a basic salary of N2.4 million per month, they earn allowances such as hardship (50 percent of basic salary), newspaper allowance (50 percent), wardrobe allowance (25 percent), entertainment (30 percent), recess (10 percent), and leave (10 percent), among others. The total allowances, he said, amounts to N29.5 million per month and N3.2 billion per annum. “Perhaps the most notorious example of the legislators’ resistance to the war against corruption is the rejection of the right of the executive to choose the persons who will spearhead that struggle,” he added. “The clear impression is created that Nigerian legislators are in office for themselves and not for the populace.” “Not surprisingly, the National Assembly has not passed a single bill for the promotion of anti-corruption war since it commenced business in July 2015.” On Thursday, Senate lambasted the Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Its spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullah, said“Sagay could not even check the records before proclaiming that ‘the National Assembly has not passed a single bill for the promotion of anti-corruption war since it commenced business in July 2015’. “This man talks like a man who is constantly under the influence of some substance and perhaps possessed as he employs the language of a tout with no civility. He is probably constantly excited and incensed by the fact of having his first opportunity to find himself in the corridors of power. “He pontificates and talks as if the war against corruption of the Buhari administration depends solely on him to survive. He once publicly attacked the Attorney General of the Federation and accused him of not doing enough to prosecute the war. “This is a man who cannot stand for councillorship election and win. We challenge him to state what his contributions are in the election of our amiable President, Muhammadu Buhari, and what new ideas he has contributed to making the fight against corruption more effective since his appointment. “With an easily excited man like him as head of an advisory body, the nation has continued to lose anti-corruption cases in courts due to the failure of his advice. He needs to do more work and talk less because media prosecution cannot win the war on corruption.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/09/08/naked-not-nigerians-sagay-fires-back-senate/

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has challenged the Senate to disprove the allegations raised by Chairman Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Itse Sagay, against its members, stating that it has been on record that the lawmakers have shrouded their remunerations in deep secrecy. Sagay had criticized members of the National Assembly for their expenditure which he said was adversely affecting the economy. According to him, “From the information I have gathered, a Nigerian Senator earns about N29 million a month and over N3 billion a year. Basic salary N2,484,245.50; hardship allowance, 1,242, 122.70; constituency allowance N4, 968, 509.00; furniture allowance N7, 452, 736.50; newspaper allowance N1, 242, 122.70. In addition, Sagay reportedly said “Wardrobe allowance N621,061.37; recess allowance N248, 424.55; accommodation 4,968,509.00; utilities N828,081.83; domestic staff N1,863,184.12; entertainment N828,081.83; personal assistant N621,061.37; vehicle maintenance allowance N1,863,184.12; leave allowance N248,424.55; severance gratuity N7, 425,736.50; and motor vehicle allowance N9, 936,982.00.” The Senate, while responding, requested President Muhammadu Buhari to call the PACAC boss to order, accusing him of spreading falsehood and making hate speeches against the federal legislature. However, the Executive Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, in a statement, said “Between the present NASS and Prof. Sagay, we will choose the latter in terms of the zeal and dedication to the cause of ridding our society of corruption. We know that the PACAC Chairman’s integrity is a million miles ahead when compared that of present NASS. “It is extremely ridiculous to hear the balderdash the lawmakers are trying use to divert attention for fundamental issues raised by the Professor. They have for long shrouded their remunerations in deep secrecy in spite of Nigerians demanding to know. Even reliance on the Freedom of Information Act will not make them bulge.” “If truly they are women and men of honour, the logical response from the Senate should have been the task to ‘disprove’ the figures put forward by Sagay. We had said before that the present NASS is apparently the most inept in the history of Nigeria with considerable number of members having corruption cases.” “We know it is because of the vibrant role Sagay is playing as the head PACAC that always make the NASS shiver any time he sneezes.” He concluded http://dailypost.ng/2017/09/09/itse-sagays-allegations-nigerian-senate-undeniable-cacol/

Another crisis may soon hit the Peoples Democratic Party as the south-west zonal executive committee of the party has filed a suit at the federal high court, Abuja, seeking the nullification of the 75th national executive committee (NEC) meeting of the party. The suit numbered FHC/ABJ/732/2017 has the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP, Ahmad Makarfi and Ben Obi, Eddy Olafeso, Bunmi Jenyo and the inspector-general of police, as defendants. The zonal committee is also praying the court to nullify the adoption of the special non-elective national convention of the party which held last Saturday in Abuja. In the suit filed by Pega Otemolu, zonal secretary, the committee also asked the court to nullify the dissolution of the PDP south-west executive committee and the appointment of a zonal executive committee in replacement thereof. Also in another suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/701/2017, Ogun PDP under the leadership of Adebayo Dayo is praying the same court to set aside its “purported” dissolution of the NEC and the national convention. In his suit, Otemolu argued that the PDP deliberately defied the order and judgment of the court in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/605/16, delivered on the May 17, 2016, and June 24, 2016, respectively and also contravened the terms and purpose of the interim order made on August 10, by the court. Specifically, the Ogun PDP is praying the court for “an order nullifying the ratification by and/or affirmative resolution of the special non-elective national convention of the first defendant/respondent of the 12th day of August 2017 sanctioning, approving or effecting the dissolution of the PDP Ogun state executive committee and the appointment of a state caretaker committee in replacement thereof. “An order nullifying the decision or resolution of the PDP special non-elective national convention of the 1st defendant/respondent of 12th August 2017 directing or approving the conduct of a state congress for the election of new members of the PDP Ogun state executive committee. “An order restraining the 1st Defendant from setting up a caretaker committee to take over the functions of the Plaintiffs as members of the executive committee of the PDP in Ogun state.” The Ogun PDP is also seeking an order restraining INEC from supervising any congress in the state. http://dailypost.ng/2017/08/16/fresh-crisis-looms-in-pdp-as-south-west-exco-sues-makarfi/

President Muhammadu Buhari's media team led by the Minister of information Lai Mohammed today paid a visit to their ailing principal at Abuja House in London. The team comprising of Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant Media & Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu, Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina and the President's Personal Assistant Digital/Online Media Lauretta Onochie were seen in photos showing a greatly emaciated Buhari receiving and reading a greeting card from the visiting party according to official photographs released by the State House, and there after the group cheered Pres. Buhari as he took measured steps from the back of the building. Although beaming with smiles, President Buhari appeared stuffed with some medical devices underneath his clothing. Later, the visiting team issues a statement below claiming the President said he was Ok, but wouldn't say when he will return to duty until his doctors determine he was fit enough. The latest visit followed other high profile visits by governors, party leaders, and the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in recent weeks which appears choreographed to douse public anxiety and growing protests from Nigerians asking the President handlers to disclose his health status or force him to resign. President Buhari has been away on medical leave since May 7th 2017. I'M OKAY, ONLY NEED TO OBEY DOCTORS’ ORDERS, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS VISITING MEDIA TEAM President Muhammadu Buhari says there is a tremendous improvement in his health, indeed, he wishes to return home, "but I've learnt to obey my doctor's orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge." The President spoke while receiving the presidential media team, and the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters, at Abuja House, London, on Saturday. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, led the visiting team, accompanied by Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity; Mallam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, and Lauretta Onochie, Personal Assistant on Digital/Online Media. Also, there was Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Matters. When the team expressed delight at the much-improved health of the President, he retorted: "I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I've now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed." On how he felt hearing different conjectures about his health, an amused President Buhari said he followed events at home closely, lauding Nigerian television stations, and the media generally, for keeping him informed. When told that prayers were going on fervently for him, not only in Nigeria, but all over Africa, and around the world, a delighted President said: "What we did in The Gambia early this year fetched us a lot of goodwill on the African continent. It gave us a lot of latitudes. I thank all those who are praying. May God reward them." President Buhari sent appreciation to all Nigerians, expressing hope that he would be with them soon. Nigerian Leaders Are Never Divided By Ethnicity, Religion When Stealing Money - Osinbajo The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has stated that Nigerian leaders are never divided by ethnicity or religion when it comes to stealing the country’s resources. Professor Osinbajo said this on Wednesday, in Abuja, at a seminar organized by the Institute for Security Studies. The seminar, which had “Unity in Diversity” as its theme, addressed the raging claims of marginalization by certain sections of the country. According to the Acting President, claims of marginalization are principally driven by selfish interests, which have given rise to false narratives. One of such false narratives, he said, is that a single ethnic or religious group bears greater responsibility for the country’s challenges or that one is superior to the other. In challenging the version of events, the Acting President said his experience is that Nigerian leaders are very united when it comes to looting the treasury. “I have found and I have repeated this several times that whenever you look at a charge sheet, that is a sheet where people have been charged with an offense, especially those who have served one way or the other in the Federal Government of Nigeria; charged with stealing or corruption, you will never find one ethnic group alone represented. You will always find an equal representation of the ethnic groups. There is complete unity in this business of stealing. You will also not find one religious group, you will find that there is nobody arguing about religion when it comes to these matters,” he said. To support his claim, he added that the country has triumphed only in instances where attention was not paid to religious or ethnic differences. For example, said the Acting President, there is no focus on religion and ethnicity when the country’s football teams take to the field. The collective goal, he explained, is the outcome of the match. He advised Nigerians to extend that attitude to every aspect of national life. “I want to say that that is exactly where we should be as a nation today. We should just be telling ourselves – just win, just score; it does not matter where you are from so long as you are in government or wherever you are, just win for this nation and we do not want to ask questions of where you are from,” he counselled. Professor Osinbajo also challenged the view that countries cobbled together, like Nigeria was, are doomed to fail, describing holders of the view, especially those describing the country as a “mere geographical expression” as pseudo-intellectuals. “Those who say so do not know that even the expression, ‘mere geographical expression”, used in relation to a country was not first used in relation to Nigeria. As a matter of the fact, it was the German statesman Klemens von Metternich, who used this same expression for Italy. He simply summed up Italy as a mere geographical expression exactly a century before Nigeria was born. Italy is still a mere geographical expression, but still a nation. So, we must not be misled by those in some pseudo-intellectual way suggest to us that the mere fact that we did not deliberately, one day, hold a conference to come together means that we should not or cannot stay together. Indeed, we can,” he argued. He equally contended that most countries of the world came together by some accident of history or forced to be together, adding that the wise ones among such have decided to remain united. The Acting President warned that it is a false assumption that an ethnic group is better taken care of if one of its members runs the government, saying the country’s experience has shown that no ethnic group has necessarily fared better socio-economically because one of its own is in power. “There is no fact to support that whatsoever and that is how it has always been,” he argued. He warned that those who level charges of marginalization against other sections or religion do not do so out of selfless love for their areas of origin. He explained that when people from certain zones say their zones have been marginalized, what they are saying is that they should be given government appointments because they hail from one zone or the other. “Whenever people make these charges of marginalization, it is usually self-serving. I sat with the President once when two members of the National Assembly came to him and said we, referring to states in the North, have been marginalized. They went on to explain why. They mentioned some states had no senior ministers. One of them said: ‘Kaduna had no senior minister; the only minister is the minister of state’. He mentioned also Sokoto, even Katsina. Then he mentioned another group and he said, all these people have senior ministers, some groups in the South have senior ministers,” he recalled. Professor Osinbajo said he responded before President Muhammadu Buhari responded, telling the federal legislators that there was no consideration, at the time the appointments were made, about whether or not they wanted to appoint a senior minister from one area or the other. His response, he said, was not well received by the National Assembly members. The Acting President reasoned that if one looks at any particular situation, one can invent a narrative to suit a personal or sectional agenda. Once, he said, he was visited by a group, which complained that being a pastor, he should be taking care of the country’s Christian community. The group, he said, told him that the cabinet was loaded with Muslims to the disadvantage of Christians. When the group’s claim was put under scrutiny, revealed the Acting President, it was discovered that there were two more Christians than Muslims in the cabinet, which currently has one more Christian than Muslims. Professor Osinbajo said he was astounded by the development, which he said also aroused suspicions in him that many of those pushing religious agenda have no commitment to their faiths. “The impression is that the moment a person is appointed, it is almost as if these are militants for their religion. Many of them do not even subscribe fully to their faiths in any way,” stated the Acting President. Professor Osinbajo rejected the view that that hate speech is part of freedom of expression and should be condoned. He warned that condoning hate speech will be a grievous error by any group of people. According to him, every major catastrophic human conflict, including of the genocidal variety, was sparked by hate or extremist ideology, especially hate speech. “We must do something about hate speech; we must control hate speech and we must insist that it is not acceptable at public discourse of any type whether it be on radio or social media. We cannot allow the promotion of hate speech,” he stated. He pointed at the sentencing of media owners to lengthy prison terms by the International Criminal Court for the promotion of hate speech, which led to the Rwandan genocide in April of 1994. In response to the clamor for the dismantling of the country, Professor Osinbajo none of the parts being proposed as stand-alone nations can be as viable as Nigeria, even if they survive. “None of them would be more viable, none of them can be as successful as a country such as this coming together. The other day at the AU (African Union), I was listening to some of the comments from several African leaders and I was whispering to the gentleman next to me that Rwanda is one of those countries that is celebrated for good governance, celebrated for a few things and even its economy. But when you compare the entire Rwandan economy, you will find that Lagos’ economy is six times bigger and Lagos is just one state of out 36 states,” he said. The Acting President said he has continued to state this view everywhere he has gone. He argued that by its population, size of its market and combined resources, Nigeria’s potential is even far greater than the potential of most countries of the world. He called on Nigerians to be courteous to one another in words and actions, so as to ensure that passions are not inflamed in a way that could lead to insecurity. He also stated that the country needs to social justice seriously, adding that poverty is a ready recipe for a variety of social problems. “Very many poor people mean that there is a pool of individuals, who have no stake in society, and so it is our business to ensure that people have a stake in society. "I think that we have a duty to ensure that we deal seriously with issues of poverty and social justice. That is why for the first time in the history of this country, when we were thinking through budgeting, we looked at the questions of social interventions and the social investment programs,” he explained. The total outlay for social investment in the 2016 budget and in the current budget, he said, is N500 billion, which is the largest single item in the budget. Allied to social investment in promoting social justice is the fight against corruption. Professor Osinbajo described corruption as possibly the worst evil Nigeria has experienced or will experience, saying it is the single reason that resources are not evenly distributed. “The fact that someone cornered the resources for themselves is what accounts for where we are today, economically. I think that we understand it for what it is. Many a times, people find excuses of every kind to excuse corruption and it is so for religious leaders, political leaders who look for all sorts of reasons to justify corruption. Someone is taken to court and they say the reason he is taken to court is because he belongs to another political party. Why don’t we ask the question, did he steal? If he did, then he should be in court anyway, there must be justice. That is the first question we must ask,” the Acting President reasoned. While admitting that the country has made mistakes, Professor Osinbajo said those wishing for a replay of the three year-civil war that the country fought in the 70s are ignorant of its harrowing effects. He noted that those who witnessed the war will not wish its horrors on their worst enemies. The Acting President added that those who only read or heard stories about the war have no sense of how it was and are largely responsible for the incendiary statements that are currently the fad. He advised Nigerians to remember that a repetition of the tragic mistakes that led to the war would be catastrophic for the country. http://saharareporters.com/2017/08/03/nigerian-leaders-are-never-divided-ethnicity-religion-when-stealing-money-osinbajo

Ethiopian Airlines has launched its 5th destination in Nigeria and 55th African destination in Kaduna. This feat makes Nigeria one of two countries the airline has five destinations, the first being China. The Ethiopia Airlines inaugural flight on B737-800 with registration number ET-EQN touched down at Kaduna International Airport yesterday at about 12noon with 17 passengers onboard and was treated to a water canon ceremony by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Fire Service department. Recall Ethiopia Airlines was the only foreign airline which operated flights in Kaduna when the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja runway was shut for repairs that lasted six weeks. Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, had opened talks with Ethiopian Airlines to maintain the route permanently. Speaking at the route launch yesterday, Mr. Samia Zakaria Gutu, Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, said Kaduna travellers can now connect to over 100 destinations all over the world. He said the airline is committed to Nigeria and also committed to connecting Africa as the largest airline in Africa. Governor el-Rufai assured the airline that the state government will support it to make the route profitable. To demonstrate that commitment, he announced that the state government has directed all its officials to use only Ethiopia Airlines for foreign trips except to destinations not covered by the airline. He also said the state government will help advertise the route as part of the partnership. He commended the Federal Government for closing the Abuja airport as that opened Kaduna up for opportunities. FAAN MD/CEO, Engr. Saleh Dunoma, said “this flight operation is very important because you cannot invest in an airport like this and allow it to lie fallow. Traffic means a lot to any airport authority and to FAAN, Kaduna airport is key because this would open the ways for the development of the state,” he said. “It is the intention of Kaduna State to make sure that development comes to it and you know most investors do not come by road, they don’t come by train but they want to fly. So, the international flight is starting today (yesterday). “So, this international flight starting today will make any business man to come to Kaduna and also any businessman can link the rest of the world from Kaduna. “As far as FAAN is concerned, you know our revenue generation depends on flights, especially international flights. So as far as we are concerned, this is an opener for us to generate more revenue to maintain old facilities and investment made in this airport and we are very happy,” he noted. The Minister of State Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, promised that the Federal Government will provide the enabling environment to make Ethiopia Airlines succeed. He said government support to the airline is in the spirit of the open skies agreement among African countries. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/business/ethiopian-airlines-commences-flight-to-kaduna/208067.html

113 chibok girls to be released soon osinbajo — 2nd August 2017 • Tasks govs on welfare of Nigerians From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi The 113 Chibok schoolgirls still in Boko Haram’s custody will be released “very soon.” Acting President Yemi Osinbajo gave the assurance, yesterday, when he received members of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram insurgents abducted 276 girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State. The sect released 82 of the girls in May, in a prisoner-swap deal with the Federal Government, and 21 were let go in October 2016. But since then, little has been heard from the Federal Government concerning the 113 still being held by the insurgents. Osinbajo, who was represented by Babafemi Ojudu, Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Matters, said government’s silence was only strategic. He reassured the group that government had been meeting with service chiefs concerning the abducted girls as well as others in Boko Haram custody, and that efforts were being intensified to secure their release. “I’ve been directed by the acting president to assure you of the support of the government concerning your agitation for the return of all the girls that were kidnapped by members of Boko Haram,” Ojudu said. “He said he heard you loud and clear. On the issue of the policewomen that are being held and even concerning the girls, on a daily basis, the acting president has been meeting with security chiefs and making contacts with negotiators across the world, who have helped in the past to secure those that have been released. “We have not, at any point, forgotten the children who could be anybody’s children. The acting president has asked me to reassure you, this afternoon, that he is with you, and that your cries are his cries. “And the fact that we are not coming out to say what is being done is strategic and, also, for security reasons. He also said I should tell you that very soon, more of the girls, if not all of them, will be brought back home.” Oby Ezekwesili, co-convener of the BBOG had urged the government to restrategise its anti-terrorism approach to ensure that all the girls, as well as the policewomen and oil workers abducted by the sect are released. “We thought the government had figured a way to get back our girls, so we estimated that the remaining 113 would return in lesser time it took the 82 to come home. “If only one voice remains, that would continue to demand the release of our Chibok girls, it is good enough. It’s enough to re-echo our voice across the universe,” she said. Meanwhile, the acting president charged governors of all states controlled by the ruling the All Progressive Congress (APC) to think out of the box in meeting up with social welfare of the people. Osinbajo, who stated this yesterday in Birnin Kebbi during a parley with Progressive Governors’ Forum, noted that the present administration promised better life for Nigerians and urged them to deliver on it. “That is why in the budget, we have N500 billion for social welfare. If States think out of the box, like Lagos, Kebbi, Jigawa and other States who used their initiatives, we can improve their lives.” Osinbajo noted that APC States must support the Federal Government to fight corruption which he described as an endemic disease. “If we don’t killed corruption, corruption will kill us, ” he said. http://sunnewsonline.com/113-chibok-girls-to-be-released-soon-osinbajo/

Like the Senate promised , the House of Representatives said on Tuesday that lawmakers would in September revisit the review of the 1999 Constitution , particularly the controversial rejection of devolution of power to the 36 states. The Leader of the House , Mr Femi Gbajabiamila , disclosed this in Abuja. The House , which is currently on a seven - week annual vacation , will reconvene on September 19 . Both the Senate and the House had voted against devolution of power on Thursday last week to the dismay of many Nigerians. But on Tuesday , Gbajabiamila stated that members would revisit the issue in September . He noted that mistakes were made in the lumping of all the items on devolution under one proposal. The All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Lagos State , added , “ Many of us will be asking for the issue of devolution of power to be revisited upon resumption in September. “ The democratic process was played out as it should be during the voting exercise. However , the process is ongoing and not concluded. “ Under our rules , we do have a mechanism which allows for rescission of a decision when appropriate or when new unknown facts emerge. “ For me , it was a mistake or oversight to have lumped all items for devolution under one umbrella or sub - head titled devolution of powers. There were about nine items including railways , pensions, arbitration , stamp duties , parks and others under the sub - head and members should have voted on each rather than vote in one fell swoop. “ A member may have agreed to certain items for devolution to states and not to others . The way we voted , one would never know how to pass judgment on each item.” He added, “ I believe each item should stand or fall on its own merit. It is important to note that devolution of power is a baby step and the simplest form of reconstruction , not a surgical dismemberment of our country. “ We must feel the pulse of the nation in moments like this. ” Meanwhile, some state governments appeared before the House Committee on Loans / Aid / Debt Management on Tuesday to defend the loans procured from foreign creditors. The Katsina State Government said it planned to provide 136 health centres in the 34 local governments of the state from the $ 110 m the Islamic Development Bank would offer the state ; while the state Commissioner for Health , Mariya Bala Usman , who appeared before the committee, stated that three teaching hospitals and a nursing school would be built from the loan. http://punchng.com/constitution-review-reps-to-revisit-power-devolution-in-september/

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has approved the redeployment of Ekpo Nta, chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). Nta was redeployed to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. Former President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Nta in 2012. In a statement on Tuesday, Bolaji Adebiyi, director of press in the office of the secretary of the government of the federation, said Bolaji Owasanoye, a professor, has been appointed as chairman with a renewable tenure of five years. “The appointment of the chairman is for five years, while the tenure of all the members is four years,” the statement read. “Also, these appointments are subject to senate confirmation.” The role of the Senate in the confirmation of some appointees by the executive generated controversy after Osinbajo expressed support for the view of Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, that Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), does not need to be confirmed by the senate. The new ICPC chairman was a member of the presidential committee on anti-corruption led by Itse Sagay, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN). The statement also announced the appointments of Grace Chinda, Okolo Titus, Obiora Igwedebia, Olubukola Balogun, Sam Ewang, a retired air force officer, Adamu Bello, a retired justice, Hannatu Mohammed and Abdullahi Saidu as members of the anti-graft agency. Musa Abubakar was named secretary, while Sa’ad Alanamu, Yahaya Daud, Khamis Mailantarki and Maimuna Aliyu were also announced as members. The acting president also named Okoi Obona-Obla, special assistant to the president on prosecution, as the chairman of the committee to recover public property. Akingbolahan Adeniran was appointed the secretary of the committee.
