you should take time to read about the USA based sea air defence, "Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System" those destroyers ships are actually are actually air defences which were incorporated into ships as a sea leg of the USA missile defence program.

the USA navy carrier don't operate in shallow waters but deep inside the ocean, that means any drone attack launch from the land would have to travel a bit of a distance to strike attack it which gives the strke group time to react.

no Carrier group oprates in hostile water's, were it can be easily attacked, it nuclear reactors gives it unlimited range, in a war with a capable enemy like China, the USA carrier's would likely operates far from missiles range and use its aircraft to attack, the essence of a aircraft Carrier is to be able to fighter jets close enough to the battle ground.

I don't know if a diesel-electric submarine operates differently from a diesel -electric ship but from my experience working on a Diesel -electric ship for about 4 years now, this is how it works compared to conventional diesel ship -
The diesel -electric ship uses diesel to power it's generators which inturn powers it's electric motors that powers the propulsion and everything on ship while a conventional ship uses diesel to start it's main engines that power the propulsion engines while generators work by the side powering electrical equipment onboard.
I doubt ships run on batteries alone for propulsion. Batteries are used to power critical equipment onboard that uses 220/440v and not heavy equipment or propulsion engines like propellers and rudders not steering gears

a nuclear sub makes less sound, have unlimited range and can submerge for a longer period a diesel sub can't do that.
