Politics / IPOB And Those Agitating For Nigeria’s Breakup Will Fail – Okorocha by maupe: 3:26pm On Jun 25, 2017 |
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Sunday berated various group agitating for Nigeria’s breakup, saying “They will be disappointed.” This is contained in his Eid–El–Fitr goodwill message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo. The governor stressed that for Nigeria to be great it has to pass through “certain challenges.” He expressed optimism that after the troubles, the country would come out “stronger and more united.” The statement reads, “As Muslims in the country and in Imo state, in particular join their Muslim brothers and Sisters all over the World to Celebrate Eid – El – Kabir. “The Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has called for serious prayers for the oneness and progress of the nation, than they had done in the past. “What we need now are prayers for the leaders and for genuine love among Nigerians irrespective of their tribes and religion, with honest prayers, the nation would come out stronger and more United from its current challenges. “No nation had achieved greatness and prosperity without going through certain challenges in the process and concluded that Nigeria’s case would not be different. “Those expecting that the country will divide will be disappointed and Nigerians should begin to see light at the end of the tunnel for the nation’s economic and political growth. “This is not the right time for hate speeches or to apportion blame for any reason against one another, but time for tolerance and understanding among Nigerians. “We pray for President Muhammadu Buhari and wish all the Muslims in the country a memorable Eid-El-Kabir.” www.dailypost.ng/2017/06/25/agitating-nigerias-breakup-will-disappointed-okorocha/ |

Last night we noted that yet another luxury condo at Manhattan’s One57 tower, a member of “Billionaire’s Row,” a group of high-end towers clustered along the southern edge of Central Park, had gone into foreclosure - the second in the span of a month. The 6,240-square-foot, full-floor penthouse in question, One57’s Apartment 79, sold for $50.9 million in December 2014, making it the eighth-priciest in the building and likely the largest residential foreclosure in Manhattan's history. According to Bloomberg, the owner of the apartment attempted to conceal his/her identity by using a shell company (you know how those kooky billionaires can be) but was able to obtain an 'unusually large' mortgage with an even more unusual term: one- year. In September 2015, the company took out a $35.3 million mortgage from lender Banque Havilland SA, based in Luxembourg. The full payment of the loan was due one year later, according to court documents filed in connection with the foreclosure. The borrower failed to repay, and now Banque Havilland is forcing a sale to recoup the funds, plus interest. Of course, it was only a matter of time until the mystery man behind Manhattan's most recent luxury real estate epic fail was exposed. As such, meet Nigerian oil magnate, Kola Aluko. As it turns out, the world renowned, Nigerian-born, billionaire playboy is about $25,000 behind on his property taxes. But, that is probably the least of his worries as the New York Post points out that he currently wanted by authorities in both Nigeria and Europe for defrauding the Nigerian government out of oil sale profits. Meanwhile, it seems that the only reason Aluko isn't already in prison is because the Nigerian courts can't seem to find him to serve papers. Apparently he's been hiding out on this 213-foot, $100 million yacht, the Galactica Star, for over a year. Over the past year, the boat has been spotted making port calls in Cancun, Mexico and Turkey. Of course, if you're going to be an international playboy then you need to have rich and famous friends and, as it turns out, rappers Jay-Z and P. Diddy seemed to have fulfilled that role for Aluko. Back in 2012 the rap duo apparently hosted Aluko's birthday party in Beverly Hills. Then, just a few years later in 2015, Jay-Z and wife Beyonce rented Aluko's mega-yacht for the bargain basement price of just $900,000 per week to sail around the Mediterranean. Well, presumably it was fun while it lasted. www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-06-24/meet-money-laundering-nigerian-oil-magnate-behind-new-yorks-50mm-condo-foreclosure |

Nigerians have said that the country is more divided under Buhari-led administration than the Jonathan’s administration.
This was gotten from an online poll conducted on Twitter by former media aide to Ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan,Reno Omokri.
According to the polls, those that think Nigeria is more divided under Buhari’s adminstration had over a thousand votes while otherwise for Jonathan’s administration were just 135.
Recall that acting President,Yemi Osibanjo, on Tuesday met with elders and leaders in the Northern States at the Presidential Villa, Abuja to address the issue of disunity and calls for disintegration.
He warned youths in the North that the Federal Government will not take the threats issued to the Igbos lightly. http://dailypost.ng/2017/06/14/nigerians-divided-buhari-online-poll/ 1 Like |

Politics / If Osibanjo Does What I Say, There Will Be No Civil War- Okupe by maupe: 8:09am On Jun 14, 2017 |
Former aide to the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe has written an advisory letter to the ActingPresident of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
In the letter he entitled “The State of Our Divided Nation” and shared via his Facebook page, Okupe warned that the drum of war was sounding very loudly from everywhere now.
He said that things will soon fall apart in the country if no adequate measures were taken to address the situation.
He advised Osinbajo to set up committees that will approach both Southern and Northern leaders to address the issues of restructuring the county and hate speeches flying about.
Okupe wrote, “It is no longer news that things area 'no longer at ease’ in our nation, what we all fervently pray for is that ‘things should not fall apart’ as our late distinguished novelist, Chinua Achebe, wrote in two of his very popular novels.
“The drums of war are becoming extremely loud and are sounding from everywhere. The shouts of injustice, marginalization, inequity, nepotism are deafening… separatists movements are springing up from every part of the land.
“Never in our chequered history has visceral hate with so much outpour of potent venom been spewed publicly in our country. Certainly Nigeria will never be the same again.
“This time around, we have allowed the sword of division to penetrate the very fabric of our unity; even up to its marrow.
“Because of deep seated anger, frustration and uncontrolled impudence and widespread impunity, outbursts from various quarters and conclaves have crossed the line of civility.
“But we must not allow our sordid and painful past conflict with our present: to do so will be to jeopardize our future, as the saying goes.
“However, Winston Churchill said: ‘Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective, lack of deep thinking and confusion of counsel… all these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history.
’“Your Excellency Sir, this is the time to act and act decisively. If you act now, ‘History will be kind to you because you would have written it yourself.
’“It is perhaps for this reason; as Mordecai said to Esther that the Lord God Almighty who you serve deliberately chose you out of the many available persons of stature in Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political dynasty,
“What I am about to say next may be seen in some quarters as impertinent. But I believe that my experiences borne out of closeness to and with two past presidents in moments of severe national distress, compels me all the same to submit my thoughts to you on the present situation of the country, with all humility for your consideration.
“Your Excellency, may I therefore suggest as follows:
“1. Set up a high powered Federal Government Committee to meet urgently with IPOB and stakeholders in the South East.
“2. Let a similar committee meet and team up with a committee of the Northern Governors Forum with the aim of evolving strategies to engage in consultations with Northern leaders and stakeholders.
“3. A similar team may closely interface with militants and stakeholders in the Niger-Delta area.
“4. Let a strong team from the Presidency, including the Attorney General, meet at different times with the leadership of the South who were members of the confab, and also their counterparts from the North.
“The aim of their engagement will be towards finding a renewed consensus on their previously published agreement or at least redefining what is agreeable now and what still requires further consultation and mediation.
“Part of the agenda of this team will be to resolve once and for all, the issue of restructuring of the federation.
“All the above activities should commence immediately and must be concluded within 6-8 weeks.
“Thereafter, the Federal Government will collate all the information and come up with a working document within another 4-6 weeks.
“The final document (NOT Government White Paper) is now circulated to members of the Council of States at least 2 weeks before a scheduled meeting which will deliberate on this pertinent national issues and advice the Federal Government on the road map to explore towards resolving these national issues.
“May the Almighty God direct you which way to follow, grant you divine wisdom to manage these delicate affairs and give you the courage to do that which is right, just and equitable. http://dailypost.ng/2017/06/14/osinbajo-must-prevent-looming-civil-war-doyin-okupe/ |
Politics / IPOB Should Stop, Igbos Are Not Ready For Another Civil War- Okorocha by maupe: 2:47pm On Jun 13, 2017 |
Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has advised Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to desist from agitating for secession, saying the Igbos were not ready for another civil war.
Okorocha gave the advice at a news briefing at the Government House in Owerri on Tuesday.
He also urged the Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other Nigerians in diaspora, drumming support for the actualisation of Biafra, to stop.
Okorocha called on Igbo youths to calm down and redirect their agitation toward the actualisation of economic advancement of Igbos rather than asking for a new sovereign nation.
On the recent sit-at-home ordered by IPOB and MASSOB, he said the exercise succeeded because the people, especially traders wanted to avoid trouble.
He described the statement by the Arewa youths directing Igbos to leave the North as “nonsensical and inciting’’.
The governor said that Igbos were peaceful people, who had come a long way in contributing to the economic development of the country, adding that no other ethnic group had contributed as much.
He called for reorientation of youths to repair the broken political relations between the North and the East and end the existing hatred and division between them.“We have failed as leaders hence the campaign of hate for one another; we need to take responsibility and end it.“We need to rise and take steps to end it and get rid of the inherent hatred and division we inherited from the colonial masters,” he said.
Okorocha also said that agitation over the leadership of the country by the different geo-political zones in the country was an ill-wind which had not done something good to the country.
He, therefore, called on all Nigerians to guard against hatred and unite to fix broken relationships. http://sunnewsonline.com/igbos-not-ready-for-another-civil-war-okorocha/ 23 Likes 5 Shares |

Former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has said he withdrew his support for former President Goodluck Jonathan because he believed that a Jonathan second term would have ruined the country. Before the 2015 general election, Oshiomhole was the only South South governor in the opposition party and some expected that Oshiomhole’s hands might be tied by his geographical kinship with the former president. In the current edition of the Interview Oshiomhole said, “Competence that was expected was not there. The level of fairness was not there. And even if you talk about sentiments, the sentiment of servicing the geo-political zones, the South South had nothing to boast of. Even the road to Yenagoa did not show that a president came from there!”He also said he referred to a private meeting where he advised, through Jonathan’s former Chief of Staff, Mike Oghiadomhe, that the former president should not contest after 2011, but his advice was ignored.“I said,” Oshiomhole recalled, “let Jonathan complete Yar’Adua’s second term and handover to a northerner…”In the current edition, described by the MD/Editor-In-Chief, Azu Ishiekwene, as “perhaps one of the most exhaustive in the magazine’s nearly two-year history,” Oshiomhole also spoke, for the first time, on why he accepted the N200m severance package approved for him by the Edo State House of Assembly.“I was never going to talk about it (the severance package),” he said, “but I have to say it now so that you can understand where I’m coming from.”The former labour leader then delved into his decades of service as a union leader “without a kobo” as severance benefit, the legal challenge he mounted to remove his predecessor and his legacy, among many other explosive subjects. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/233905-oshiomhole-attacks-jonathan-says-ex-president-had-zero-competence.html |

The Former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major HamzaAl-Mustapha and the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Chief Ralph Nwazuruike, Monday, met in Kaduna to broker peace over the quit notice issued to Igbo to leave the northern region by a coalition of Northern youths. The meeting held at the Arewa House where the norther youths made their infamous declaration was convened by Major Al-Mustapha apparently to douse tension caused by the declaration. Major Al-Mustapha challenged the youths in the region to allow reason to prevail and resist the temptation to be used to ferment trouble that would affect the unity of the country. He alluded that the present crisis in the country as a result of divisive utterances from various groups may have been sponsored by countries that envy Nigeria, adding that these countries could even sponsors their lackeys into leadership positions in Nigeria.“We are appealing that our younger ones whom have been declared wanted should be set free, and the order of arrest should be rescinded because it is not the solution” he saidIn his remarks, the leader of MASSOB leader, Chief Raphael Uwazurike noted that the crisis in Nigeria is being manipulated and caused by politicians, stressing that “the youth must not allow that, the country must continue to exist as one nation but issues of marginalization can be discussed. Nwazurike explained that when he founded MASSOB in 1999, it was purely meant to be a peaceful platform through which issues of perceived marginalisation of the Igbo’s in Nigeria could be discussed and tackled. He said though it was right for any part of the country to seek self determination, it was wrong to pursue same through violent means.“I handed over Radio Biafra which I created to Nnamdi KANU in London as the managing director and was hoping it would serve the purpose for which it was created, but was disappointed that politicians hijacked it and it became something else,” he said.He assured the Northerners in all the Eastern part of the country of their safety, saying that he was happy it’s same assurance of the safety of easterners in the north byMajor Hamza Almustapha (rtd).“I want to assure northerners that your people in the South east are safe and nobody will harass them and am happy that my friend Al-Mustapha has also given same assurance of the safety of our people in the north.“Self determination without violence is a fundamental right, we must strive against sowing the seed of discord but do all that willpromoted peace and justice.“There is a gap of communication from our leaders which needs to bebridged hence we are meeting withnotable leaders in the north to persuade them that there is no cause for alarm” he noted. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/igbo-quit-notice-al-mustapha-massob-leader-meet-broker-peace/ |

Omokri captured important events in the last administration in ‘Facts versus fiction: The true story of the Jonathan years, Chibok, 2015 and the conspiracies’. The book is already an Amazon bestseller. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Jonathan said the book has emerged a bestseller on the global platform because “Nigerians are hungry for the truth”. “In a mere 24 hours, a book on my administration, Facts Versus Fiction: The True Story of the Jonathan Years, Chibok, 2015 and the Conspiracies, became a worldwide #9 bestseller and the #1 trending topic in Lagos, Abuja and the entire nation of Nigeria,” he wrote. As an experienced, versatile, truth sourcing reporter, i can confirm that this is true. El rufai is not only playing loose with the truth. He is also a major fianancier of the pogrom that is being planned. He and some top Northern Governors have marked dates for a ethnic cleansing in their respective states. The Acting president is aware of this, but is too afraid to do anything. He has been told by evil advisers that his silence and complicity on this could actually endear him to the north and could make their leaders see him as a willful servant. And thus could make them let him be president once the unfortunate happens |
Politics / Ndigbo, Leave The North Now, El Rufai Is A Liar- MASSOB by maupe: 8:35am On Jun 12, 2017 |
The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, weekend, described the directive given by Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State to arrest the northern youths who issued quit notice to Igbos in the region as deceptive and a cover up for the plots the North has put in place against Ndigbo. MASSOB made the accusation in a statement issued in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, by its Director of Information, Comrade Edeson Samuel. Samuel stated that anybody asking Ndigbo to remain in the North was an enemy of Ndigbo. He accused Northerners of deriving pleasure in shedding the blood of innocent people at the slightest provocation. He said Ndigbo living in the North should not listen to those false promises made by Northern governors because on the day of attack, none of these governors will show their face until after the killing. The statement read in part, “Massob is maintaining its earlier stand on the quit notice given to Ndigbo in Northern Nigeria. “We congratulate them for taking the bull by its horn. When a landlord is no longer interested in his tenants, the best way is to serve him quit notice instead of using thugs to eject him. “The Northerners have given us quit notice, it is our duty to vacate their land without delay. It is better we part in peace than in pieces. “The Bible says that two cannot work together unless they agree. The north and the east are like oil and water, which cannot be mixed. Our culture and religion differ. “We the Igbo value lives, we hate shedding of blood but the Northerners derive joy in shedding the blood of innocent people. “Anybody encouraging Ndigbo to remain in the north is an enemy of Ndigbo.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/06/12/quit-notice-igbos-dont-listen-el-rufais-false-promises-massob-warns-ndigbo/ |

Amnesty International on Friday stated that the coordinated attacks by Boko Haram that killed at least 17 people and injured 34 more on Wednesday night were “vicious, demonstrate a contemptible disregard for human life and the bloodiest so far this year.”Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, in a statement made available to DAILY POST, said Boko Haram must end its campaign of unlawful killings of civilians.“These deplorable attacks took place at a time when Muslims were breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan and demonstrate complete disregard for human life“The Nigerian authorities must do more to protect civilians and bring the actual perpetrators of all such attacks to justice, rather than sweeping up hundreds of suspects and holding them indefinitely in horrific, life-threatening conditions.” AI recalled that the attacks started at around 6.30pm when Boko Haram fighters opened fire randomly in Jiddari Polo community in Maiduguri, one of the northern region’s biggest towns. AI added that later, at around 9pm, four suicide bombers detonated explosive devices near the Lake Chad Basin Research Institute in Goni Kachallari area of the town. Amnesty International said an eyewitness told the body that he heard four explosions, one very close-by. It quoted the eyewitness as saying, “Two of my children, 13-year old twins, were injured by shrapnel. Some of the injuries were minor while some were serious like one whose nose was split.“I quickly looked for pieces of cloth to tie the nose to prevent it from severing and to also stop the bleeding.”The man said that he and his neighbours gave first aid to people who had been injured by the blast and accompanied them to hospital. http://dailypost.ng/2017/06/09/boko-haram-latest-attack-bloodiest-2017-amnesty-international/ |
Politics / Even A Nincompoop Is Seen As A Great President In Nigeria by maupe: 3:58pm On Jun 07, 2017 |
For the past month, with Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari away on hissecond medical vacationto London this year, Yemi Osinbajo has been in charge. With the countrymired in a recession, Osinbajo faces a tough task but the acting president has alreadywon plauditsfor his proactive, hands-on approach—a stark contrast to Buhari’s slow, delibrate approach. In fact, Osinbajo is seen to have done so well, early talk of apossible shotat the presidency in the 2019 elections is startingto emerge.Much of this is down to the acting president’s decisive actions. Under his watch, Nigeria haskicked off reformsat local ports, famed for their congestion and corruption, and as part of his drive to improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria, entry visa rulesfor investors and tourists have been relaxed.Beyond those, Osinbajo has also scored points for attending a recent forum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s civil war. Largely regarded as a taboo topic, the war isscarcely discussed, especially by government officials. Osinbajo’s keynote speechappealing for unitywas well-timed as secessionist calls have grown louder in parts of Nigeria’s southeast.Osinbajo’svisit to Nigeria’s volatile oil-producingNiger Delta communities in March was also applauded. In a region that’s frequently been at odds with the federal government, his pacifist rhetoric was timely as Nigeria looks to boost its oil production. The acting president’s charming photo-opswhile mingling with traders at local markets and visiting school kids have also proven popular.Calabar, thank you so much for the warmth and welcome.pic.twitter.com/V6dtVa101z— Prof Yemi Osinbajo (@ProfOsinbajo)June 1, 2017But the fawning over Osinbajo’s leadership and gestures reveals a deeper truth: Nigerians have very low expectations of their leaders. In part, that’s down to the kind of leaders the country has had.Nigeria has been ruled by military heads ofstate for more than half of its 56 years since gaining independence in Oct. 1960. Indeed, Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, two democratically elected presidents, are former military heads of state. As civilians, both men will have ruled for a total of 12 years if Buhari completes his current term. Essentially, formuch of its existence, Nigeria has been ledby military rulers or by former military rulers. With local politics anchored less on competence and more on ethnicity and religion, there’s been little room for smart, issue-based politicking as well as long-term visionary leadership. Last week, Osinbajo, a senior pastor at one of Nigeria’s largest churches, wasforced to denyclaims that a majority of his aides areChristian. As such, conditioned by decades of charmless, often corrupt, leadership and ethnic-focused politics, Osinbajo, a charismatic London School of Economics-trained professor feels like a breath of fresh air.Of course, no one should be deemed worthy of being president on the back of nice photo-ops and a few speeches. While he’s said and done the right things, there simply isn’t anything tangible to celebrate just yet, in fact, quite the opposite. Unemployment has risen for theninth straight quarterwhile inflation is beginning to tick upwards again. Ordinary Nigerians struggle to remember a worse economic environment. The new policies are yet to fully get off the ground, though the acting president’s teamis quick to point out these policies are not new, but those of president Buhari. Over time, Osinbajo might well turn out to be a great (acting) president. For now he appears to already be swaying public opinion his way mostly by being seen to take action rather than the details of his policies. Again, it shows how little Nigerians have come to expect from their leaders.Being from a certain part of the country, practicing a certain religion or looking and acting presidential should not be enough. The bar to lead Africa’s largest country should be much higher. https://qz.com/998381/nigerias-osinbajo-has-had-an-easy-ride-as-president-so-far/?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C9374252919 |
Politics / Senate Confirms Old Man As Ambassador After Calling Him "Old Man" by maupe: 3:30pm On Jun 07, 2017 |
The Senate has confirmed the nomination of 82-year-old Sylvanus Nsofor as an ambassador, after he was initially rejected in March.Mr. Nsofor from Imo State was one of the three non-career ambassadorial nominees the Senate rejected alongside Jacob Daodu from Ondo State, in March.“Although he was calm at the screening, he looked frail and tired. His responses to the issues raised were either not answered or devoid of details and mostly satirical,” observed Monsurat Sunmonu, chairperson of the foreign affairs committee, giving reason for Mr. Nsofor’s earlier rejection on March 23.Mrs. Sunmonu, APC-Oyo, also noted that Mr. Nsofor, during his screening, refused to recite the national anthem and questioned Senators’ reason for asking him for the recital. According to Mrs. Sunmonu, the 82-year-oldjudge pushed back a question on his suitability for the job of an envoy based on his age. Mrs. Sunmonu quoted the nominee as saying the Senate should ask Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe how he was leading his country despite his very advanced age. But despite his earlier rejection as well as the observations raised by the Senate,Mr. Nsofor was renominated for confirmation by Mr. Buhari on April 27.However, the committee on foreign affairs reversed itself on Wednesday by recommending Mr. Nsofor for confirmation. Mrs. Sunmonu said the nominee had improved in the ways he responded to questions during his second screening. She also said a report by the State Security Service against the nominee could not be sustained because it did not bother on criminal records but was a mere advisory based on Mr. Nsofor’s old age. Apart from Mr. Nsofor, the Senate also confirmed the nominations of Olusola Iji, Ondo State, and Yusuf Hinna, Gombe State, as non-career ambassadorial nominees. Meanwhile, the Senate tasked its foreign affairs committee to investigate the rationale for increased cost of Hajj pilgrimage by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/233287-breaking-senate-confirms-three-new-ambassadors-including-octogenarian-it-once-called-frail-weak.html |

Politics / Buratai Saved Nigeria From Coup, Deserves An Award– Aregbesola by maupe: 9:49am On May 24, 2017 |
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday stated that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, averted coup in Nigeria. Aregbesola made the declaration at the Osun State House of Assembly in Osogbo, the state capital. The governor also called for a probe into the coup allegation with a view to bringing any erring officer to book. Recall that Buratai, last week, said he received information that some individuals were approaching some officers and soldiers for political reasons. http://dailypost.ng/2017/05/24/buratai-saved-nigeria-coup-aregbesola/ |
Politics / Arrest Coup Plotters Now, Before It's Too Late- Falana by maupe: 9:19am On May 22, 2017 |
Femi Falana (SAN), yesterday urged the Nigerian government to arrest those planning to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and try them for treasonable felony before it’s too late. Recall that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General TY Buratai, last week said he received information that some individuals were approaching some officers and soldiers for undisclosed political reasons. Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, Director Army Public Relations, said on the basis of that, Buratai “has warned such persons to desist from these acts”. Falana, however, warned that the matter must not be treated with levity because of the weighty consequences. He spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State, at the weekend in a paper titled “Politics, Leadership And Accountability: The Role Of The People” delivered at a colloquium on Kwara@50 organised by The Movement For Genuine Change. Falana said: “The political class should stop playing into the hands of potential coup plotters. While the decision of the Army chief to alert the nation of the devilish plot is appreciated, the authorities should proceed to fish out the coup plotters and their civilian collaborators with a view to trying them for treasonable felony. “Notwithstanding the glaring shortcomings of the fragile democratic process, the people should be allowed to take advantage of the democratic structures to take their political destiny in their own hands.” www.dailypost.ng/2017/05/22/charge-coup-plotters-treasonable-felony-late-falana/ 1 Like |

Politics / Another Chibok Girl Escapes Boko Haram: Presidency by maupe: 9:12pm On May 17, 2017 |
Another Nigerian schoolgirl from the kidnapped group known as the "Chibok girls" has escaped from her captivity by Islamist insurgency Boko Haram, a presidential spokesman said on Wednesday. The escape makes her the latest to return of the roughly 270 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in April 2014 from the northeastern town of Chibok. Earlier this month, the militants swapped 82 of the girls in exchange for prisoners. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at a cabinet meeting in the capital Abuja on Wednesday "announced that another Chibok schoolgirl had been found after she escaped from her captors," said the spokesman. "I learnt she is already being brought to Abuja," he said, giving no further details. Of the 270 girls originally kidnapped, around 60 have escaped and more than 100 have been released. About 100 more are still believed to be in captivity. Boko Haram's insurgency has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced more than two million since 2009 in an attempt to create an Islamic caliphate in northeastern Nigeria. Three years ago, the abduction of the girls from their secondary school by Boko Haram sparked global outrage and a celebrity-backed campaign #bringbackourgirls. For more than two years there was no sign of the girls. But the discovery of one of them with a baby last May raised hopes for their safety, with a further two girls found in later months and a group of 21 released by the Islamist militants in October. Although the Chibok girls are the most high-profile case, Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of adults and children, many of whose cases are neglected, say aid organisations. The group often uses those captives, especially young girls and women, as suicide bombers. http://af.reuters.com/article/nigeriaNews/idAFL8N1IJ5O3?feedType=RSS&feedName=nigeriaNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FAfricaNigeriaNews+%28News+%2F+Africa+%2F+Nigeria+News%29&&rpc=401 |
Politics / UK Govt In Hot Mess Over Controversial Tompolo Deal by maupe: 7:47am On May 15, 2017 |
Newly obtained documents also reveal the role U.K. government played in approving the export license for the deal with a former Nigerian warlord. A British firm is under investigation by the U.K., U.S., Nigeria and Norway for its role in bribing a Norwegian official and a former Nigerian warlord in a multi-million-pound defense deal of seven decommissioned naval vessels. The case's first court verdict based on the allegations will be announced Tuesday in Oslo. CAS-Global Ltd. bought a hand naval vessel — the KNM Horten — via the U.K. and exported it to a Nigerian company controlled by a former Nigerian warlord. According to Corruption Watch, an anti-bribery group that is set to release a report on the issue on Monday, the newly obtained documents also reveal the role U.K. government played in approving the export license for the deal. Not much is known about Cas-Global’s business. The Companies House in the U.K. had declared last month that it intended to dissolve the firm that was set up in 2008 as it seemed to be inactive. Cas-Global has already been the subject of an investigation since 2014 by the City of London police’s specialist anti-corruption unit. The City of London police told the Guardian that its detectives “continue to actively investigate the suspected bribery of a Norwegian public official in connection with the purchase of ex-naval vessels from 2012 onwards. The joint investigation with the Norwegian authorities has led to the arrest of four men.” The city of London police is also "liaising with the American and Nigerian authorities in respect of inquiries connected to financial transfers." www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Anti-Corruption-Police-in--UK-US-Nigeria-and-Norway-Investigate-UK-Firm-over-Defense-Deal-with-Warlord-20170514-0030.html |
Politics / Osinbajo’s Report: SGF Lawal to be sacked by maupe: 9:50am On May 11, 2017 |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s Committee, set up to investigate the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal and the Director- General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agence, NIA, Ayo Oke, has recommended the removal of the duo. This recommendation, contained in the report of the probe, leaked to the media on Wednesday. Similarly, a massive shake-up has been planned for the NIA and the SGF’s offices. The Nigerian government is, however, expected to release the findings and recommendations once President Muhammadu Buhari gives his nod. Buhari, it was gathered, received the report before his medical follow-up trip abroad last Sunday. He and Osinbajo had a closed-door deliberation on the next line of action. Other members are Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami and National Security Adviser (NSA) Gen. Babagana Munguno. But it is not yet known if there will be any form of soft landing for Lawal and Oke. A source told DAILY POST that “I don’t envisage public ridicule of suspended Lawal and Oke. But they will be made to cough out whatever money went missing under them.” Recall that the Centre for Anti- Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, raised alarm that there was a ploy by those close to President Buhari to give them a soft-landing. CACOL in a statement by its Director, Debo Adeniran, said “The body language we are getting from the FG of recent is of a government now buckling down to serious business. “We trust that the Vice President, as a man of proven integrity himself, must have assembled a team he believed would midwife foolproof investigation and come up with impeccable findings. “The country is at the edge of a precipice and I don’t think this government has the time to elongate keeping those who are not in same spirit with it in office.” www.dailypost.ng/2017/05/11/osinbajos-report-lawal-oke-faces-sack-shake-sgf-nia-offices-imminent/ |
