Two Chinese nabbed by EFCC over N100 million Bribe to bury an ongoing investigation agaisnt their company

In a statement released by the EFCC;


The sokoto Zonal office of the EFCC , jade arrested two Chinese; Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Koi for offering a sum of N50,000,000 as bribe to its Zonal head , Mr. Abdullahi Lawal.

The suspects were arrested on Monday , May 11 ,2020 in Sokoto. The bribe was allegedly offered in a desperate bid to compromise ongoing investigations of a construction company , China Zhonghao Nig. Ltd, handling contracts awarded by the Zamfara State Government in the sum of N50,000,000,000,00 (fifty Billion Naira ) between 2012 to 2019.
The zonal office of the commission is investigating the construction company , in connection with the execution of contracts for the construction of township roads in Gummi, Bakkuyun, Anka and Nassarawa towns of Zamfara state ;
And also the construction of one hundred and sixty eight (168) solar - powered boreholes in the 14 local government areas of the state .
Alarmed by the constituency and professionalism of investigation being conducted , the company reached out to Lawal with an offer of N100,000,000 (one hundred million naira ) as bribe to “bury” the matter .
In a grand design to trap the corrupt officials, Lawal played along. On Monday , two representatives of the company Meng Wei Kun and Xu Kuoi offered him cash totally fifty million naira in their office along airport road , Sokoto. The cask was offered as a first installment.
The suspects were promptly arrested with the cash as an evidence. Investigation of the construction company was informed by an intelligence on alleged conspiracy; misappropriation of public funds; embezzlement; official corruption; abuse of office , stealing and money laundering obtained against the Zamfara state government through inflated and incompleted contracts awarded to the company.
Investigations have so far revealed that China Zounghao Ltd has received payments of over N41,000,000,000,00 (Forty One Biion Naira ) from the Zamfara state government, out of which about N16,000,000,000.00 ( sixteen billion Naira ) equivalent to over $53,000,000.00 ( Fifty Three million US Dollars ) was allegedly diverted and traced to some bureau de change operators.
The suspect would soon be charged to court.

Press release by the EFCC;


The attention o bathe Economic And Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC , has been drawn to the judgement of the Supreme Court nullifying the trial of a former governor of Abia State , Orji Kalu, his firm , Slok Nigeria Limited and Jones Udeogu, a former Directive of Finance and Account of Abia State Government and ordering their fresh trial at the lower court, The apex court based its verdict on the grounds that Justice Mohammed Idris , who convicted Kalu and others had been elevated to the Court of Appeal before the judgement and returned to the lower court to deliver the judgment which it considered as illegal.

The EFCC considers the judgement of the apex court as quite unfortunate. It is a technical ambush against the trial of the former , governor. The commission is prepared for a fresh and immediate trial of the case because its evidence against Kalu still subsist because the Supreme Court did not acquit him of them . The entire prosecutorial machinery of the EFCC would be launched in a fresh trial where justice is bound to be served in due course .

Kaduna state governor , Nasir El-Rufai tested positive to the deadly disease and later recovered and tested negative. El-Rufai said despite all the security around him , the virus still manage to find its way into his life , But he thanked his deputy governor and others for helping him fight the virus .

According to the governor ;

“I could have died if not for my doctors . I followed their instructions strictly and took my medications . My wives collaborated with Dr Hadiza, the deputy Governor and seized my phones while in isolation . I was only left with an IPad , the device I used to read and go online .

“I can’t exactly say how I contracted the coronavirus . But I was in Abuja and had interacted with many people , some from overseas . I was assigned to chair committees by the government. I believe it was from theses interactions that I got the virus .

“it’s a good coincidence that we have Dr Hazida as our deputy governor and Dr Baloni who was with UNICEF for over 20years and knows much about public health . We are glad and lucky to have them , especially during this pandemic .
