Pls guys, Can I give this recipe to a 3weeks old puppy ?. If not, Pls suggest any recipes or feed I can give. I appreciate you inputs both of you. I'm a new dog owner and I need your response pls
It might be too early at 3 weeks as they should still be taking milk from their mother. If their mother isn't available or isn't producing enough milk, you can introduce commercially produced milk to the puppy.

However, you can introduce the formula to your pup at 4/5 weeks.

Cheers!

PetsRe: My 2 Months Old German Shepherd Refuses To Eat by Mccarthyal(m): 4:16am On Oct 09, 2016
Seun:
The fact that she is not playing shows that your puppy is starving and will probably die if you don't spring into action.

I'm shocked that the person who sold you the puppy didn't give you any idea of how to feed her. Dogs are carnivores; they don't eat rice and beans or garri. They eat meat but they will also eat rice or indomie if it's mixed with shawa/titus fish, chicken, or meat. I'm shocked that it took 3 days for you to realize that she needs "meat". Can you post a picture of the "meat" you fed her so we can tell you why she's not eating it? I hope you didn't include any beef bones with the "meat". Please post the picture of the puppy as well, so we can predict the time she will die.

I urge you to switch to canned puppy food as early as tomorrow if possible. Your instincts about what to feed a dog are completely wrong.

Here's what you should feed her tonight: mix a small amount of cooked rice (not indomie unless it's crushed) with a tin or two of canned sardine.

She needs canned food. It contains all the protein and vitamins she needs, and is palatable. You can start economizing when she's fully grown.
I think it's in very bad taste and irritating that you want a picture that will help you predict the "time she will die". This man came for help, if you had nothing to offer him, why not let him instead of dampening his spirit and mking him panicky? Is that your end game? To allow his dog die? Because all you've managed to do it create fear in his mind.

Nobody is born with the knowledge of caring for dogs. We all learnt it at one point or another. Even you, who thinks himself an "expert" in canines. This young man just needed someone to put him through, and you failed woefully. I'm really irritated by your comment. Little wonder so many have taken after you. Where you should have led by example, you FAILED!

been wanting to give you an update but i have been a little busy... the dog has taken a liking to the food now, i have fed it twice, the first i used boiled meat water to prepare, although it only took a little when the food was served, but by morning i discovered the plate was clean, and yesterday too i prepared with normal water, although he finished the first one faster, he did do a good job on that too. thank you for taking time to explain better and graphically.

Whatever unit of measurement at your disposal. For example, if you're using the regular "mudu" market sellers use, it will be something like this:

1 mudu of corn
1/2 mudu of soya beans
1/2 mudu of groundnuts &
Fish meal

If you're doing 2 mudu's of corn, the others should be 1 mudu of each.
I hope it's clear now?

Here's an infographic for those interested...

Step 1: Pour some quantity of the formula into a pot.

Step 2: Add some water to it, mix thoroughly and place on fire.

Step 3: Begin to stir. When it's a bit thick, add some more water and continue stirring. Allow to cook. The mixture should have doubled the original quantity when cooked.

Step 4: Serve cool.

I hope this helps. Cc @countsparrow @mrflow1 @Namdeenero

The Soya Beans is a major constituent of the formula. I don't know how it will come out when it is removed from it. Was it watery? This may be why your dog didn't like it.

While milk is a good source of protein, it is not a legume, and it won't give the consistency required that soya beans will. Plus, soya beans adds to the aroma of the formula

You can actually roast the soya beans yourself. Just get a pan, pour sand into it and place on fire. When the sand is hot enough, pour some soya beans into it. Begin to turn until the soya beans changes colour from light brown to dark brown. Remove it from the sand using a perforated serving spoon and sieve the sand out. It's as easy as that. You can roast your groundnuts the same way.

I don't want you to give up on this. It is a very nutritious meal and will save you loads of money. It's my dog's staple food at the moment. Thanks for the compliment.

Please let me know how it goes. Good luck.

Hi.

Was it prepared exactly as I explained? Did you get the consistency I described? Also, you left out soya beans in your preparation. May I ask why?

Is this this first time you're introducing it to your pup? If yes, you will have to do so gradually as I stated in the initial post above. Your dog won't accept it as it is relatively new to it.

Try mixing it with something it really likes and would readily consume. What it likes should be more, with a little of the formula. Begin to increase the formula while reducing what it likes gradually until it's just the formula left. That's how to introduce your dog to new foods.

The phasing out should be done slowly but gradually. Do not rush it.
11k is a lot of money right now, especially if you're dealing with more than one dog.

This is the first time I'm hearing of a dog rejecting this meal. If you prepare it well and allow to cook, and phase out your dog's food slowly, I'm sure you will see a difference.

Good luck!

Hi.
Place in an air-tight container and you're good. I don't know how long it takes before it gets bad, but it has an extremely long shelf-life.

Tanx a lot bro. The formula is perfect.
I want to ask on how to preserve it? And how long it would take before it gets spoilt?
PetsRe: Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by Mccarthyal(m): 10:26am On Aug 28, 2016

Dear Mccarthyal and Fabulouskay,

Brothers, I've been waiting for 48 hours to confirm before breaking the news here. They have been rushing it and I wanted to ascertain if their love for it would persist. Now they just clear it and leave my Binggo/Indomie combination behind. If I combine them, they just leak it off and leave the Binggo/Indomie. Wonders!

The next prayer is to see changes in their appearance in a few weeks. But the acceptance is super, and they are all happier.

I am grateful to you guys for being so open. All the business guys in the house refused to assist. If I had asked for puppy, they would have stormed the thread with phone numbers. Na so life be sha.

Hi,
Yes roast them separately as you'll need to remove the shaft from the groundnuts after roasting.
2. The after grinding, it should be in form on powder. You're to add the powder into a pot of water.
Sorry for the late reply.

emeka2847:
Bros, I'm now on the practicals but a little confused. Kindly clarify:

1. Am I to roast the groundnut and soyabeans together or separately?

2. Is the formula going to be in for of paste or powder after grinding? Am I to add powder or paste to boiling water?

Thank you for the support.

Hi,

If you're having issues with your dam, you should consult a vet.
The reason your dam is not gaining weight is because she's depleting her body's reserves at her own expense. This is why at this time, her meals should be highly nutritious.

Feeding your dam with just kibbles will not meet up with her current requirements. She should be fed with highly nutritious and palatable meals to help recover nutrients and electrolytes lost during whelping, as well as help with lactation for the pups.

The above formula might help in providing nutrients for your dam. However, you might want to augment it. I suggest you add chicken to it after preparing. The broth used to cook the chicken can also be added to it while preparing. Make sure to remove the bones from the chicken, so as to reduce the stress of having to crack the bones.
Also, always make sure there's water in her whelping box to prevent dehydration. You can give her this three times daily while still giving her the kibbles. As I do not know the amount of litter, you should note that the larger the litter, the greater the nutrient requirements for milk production and consequently, the greater the portions served. Sources of fat are also very important for the overall wellbeing of the dam. In the formula described above, the groundnuts and fish have adequate amount of fats, but you might want to also give your dam whole eggs as eggs contain more than the normal requirement of fat in then.

Your dam might reject some of these foods. So monitor her closely and find out what she likes. Also, do not over feed her. Giving her the right amount is just sufficient.

To recap, introduce chicken bits to the formula. Add broth from the chicken while preparing the formula. Feed 3x daily. If you wish, you can give her kibbles once a day. Water should be readily available to prevent dehydration. Also, one whole egg per day. I hope this helps.

Good luck with your Dam and her pups.
Cheers!

Namdeenero:
Pls. Interested in this recipe, since my dog whelped she's not gaining weight. Will this recipe help bulk up her weight cos I've been feeding her with diamond puppy kibbles 3 times daily and I'm only noticing little weight gain, what am I missing? Thanks
PetsRe: Advice On Local Recipè For Dog Food by Mccarthyal(m): 10:19pm On Jul 31, 2016
INGREDIENTS

▪️2 Parts Corn
▪️1 Part Soya Beans
▪️1 Part Groundnuts
▪️Fish (could be crayfish, fish waste, etc and as much as you can afford. You can do 1 part fish of your choice, don't just go overboard as too much protein isn't good).

Roast the soya beans and groundnuts to remove the shaft. Then grind all together until very smooth.
NB; grind the corn first before adding the other ingredients, as corn is the hardest of them.

PROCEDURE FOR COOKING
Into a pot of water on fire, pour some of the formula and stir (e.g 2 tin cups of milk into 1&1/2 glass cup of water). Keep stiring until you get a consistency like pap (Ogi). It takes a little while to get this consistency, so be patient. If it's too thick, you can add some water. For the wee pups, it's shouldn't be thick. For older dogs, you can serve thick. Add a little salt or seasoning when it's ready. You can also add palm oil if you so desire. Serve cool.

NB; Your dogs won't readily eat it, as its new to them so start small when cooking.

Here's a tip from a fellow nairalander @LordRegalia, if you're having trouble getting your dogs to eat something new, mix it with something they really like. In my case I mixed it with pedigree (rice & chicken). The trick is to have more quantity of what your dog likes with little of what you're introducing. Begin to reduce what it likes while adding more of the staple food - in this case the formula, until it's just the staple food they're consuming.

If there's any part you're unclear about, let me know.

Cheers!
emeka2847:
I used to give Diamond, but it's now too expensive. I changed to Binggo to save cost, but I'm still doubting its quality in terms of value for money. Worse still, my GSD just littered nine, and I'm worried about cost of feeding as they start growing.

Please can anyone share with me local recipe and step by step instruction on how to make NUTRITIOUS but CHEAP food to help my puppies grow well?

Thank you in advance.
