Monarchs, group seek Yoruba Nation autonomy

The Yoruba World Congress (YWC) has said that everything possible would be done to ensure the liberation of the region from the current challenges of under-development and insecurity pervading the land.

The YWC, therefore, urged all sons and daughters from Yorubaland to bring heads together and be united in one accord for the region to take its rightful place and ensure its freedom from the shackles of backwardness in the country, saying: “Democracy began from the cradle of the Yoruba.”

President-General of YWC, Prof. Banji Akintoye, stated this yesterday at Okemesi in Ekiti South West Local Council of Ekiti State during the commemoration of the 134th anniversary end of Kiriji War and 2020 Yoruba National Day celebration organised by the Congress.

Akintoye, represented by Ekiti State Co-ordinator of YWC, Mr. Praise Ayodele, said that the historic event was organised to help in discovering and promoting the history of Yoruba after 134 years and use same to enhance unity among its residents for the ultimate goal of achieving the desired liberation for the people of the region.

MEANWHILE, the traditional rulers at the event, Owa Ooye of Okemesi, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji; the Olojudo of Ido-Faboro, Oba Ayorinde Ilori-Faboro and the Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Joseph Adewole, lamented the spate of insecurity in the region, saying the current political arrangement had failed the people.

The monarchs, while advocating the unity and co-operation of residents to overcome the numerous challenges pervading the land, urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to allow the restructuring of the country.

IN the same vein, a socio-political group, Oodua Action Movement (OAM), has called for the right to self-determination of Yoruba Nation that would guarantee speedy and monumental development of the region.

In a statement in Akure, yesterday, by its Co-ordinator, Demola Edward, the group stated that the best and only option for the survival of the Yoruba Nation is regional autonomy.

Politics74 Prominent Elders Vow To Pull Yoruba Nation Out Of Nigeria by McHorladwealth(op): 9:48am On Sep 23, 2020
Seventy-four prominent Yoruba elders have vowed to pull the Yoruba nation out of Nigeria if the country is not restructured before the 2019 general elections.

Acting under the aegis of Voice of Reason (VOR), a socio-cultural group, the elders made this known in an advertorial on page 25 of The Punch newspaper of Monday, January 22.

Some of the elders that signed the advertorial include: former Chief of Army Staff, General Alani Akinrinade; former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe; co-founder, EKO Hospitals, Olorogun Sonny Kuku; and spokesperson, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin.

According to the elders, the 1999 constitution under which the country is being governed is “flawed” and designed to give undue advantage to the northern regions of the country over their southern neighbours.

“The Yoruba people are irrevocably committed to a fundamental restructuring of this current union within the shortest possible time, preferably, before the elections, failing which, we Yoruba people may have to exercise our option not to continue to be part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as presently constituted.

“In the inalienable right to self-determination guaranteed by the United Nations Charter, we are prepared to use ALL means and resources available to us to extricate our people from this failed, unfair and unworkable union,” the advertorial read in part.

VOICE OF REASON (VOR)

Agba Kiiwaloja ki oriomo tuntun wo [Yoruba Proverb]

VOR is a body of Yoruba sons and daughters, comprising successful entrepreneurs and eminent professionals across the spectrum of the society.

As a body, VOR is not partisan, but we are passionate about the progress and welfare of the nation.

The average age of the scores of membership of the body is above sixty five years.

In any culture in the world, anyone of that age qualifies to be referred to as an ELDER.

With the events going on in Nigeria at present, we believe, as elders in Yoruba land, it is time we made our voices heard, loud and clear.

No one needs to be told of the suffering of the people under the harsh economy and insecurity brought about by a federation hobbled by corruption, insincerity and ineptitude of politicians.

VOR has noted that the aspirations of most Nigerians are not being met resulting in very apparent despondency which, if unchecked, will lead to chaos in the land.

VOR further notes that the dissatisfaction of citizens largely stems from a lack of opportunities for self-development and employment even for those who have taken step to educate themselves and their children, many of our qualified citizens are abroad unable to come back and cope with the existing conditions.

Before the whole country becomes convulsed by election fever, we have resolved to bring the following to the attention of the public as a whole.

The Yoruba people are irrevocably committed to a fundamental restructuring of this current union within the shortest possible time, preferable, before the elections, falling which, we Yoruba may have to exercise our option not to continue to be part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as presently constituted. In the inalienable right to self-determination guaranteed by the United Nations Charter, we are prepared to use ALL means and resources available to us to extricate our people from this failed, unfair and unworkable union.
The restructuring exercise envisaged and demanded by the Yorubas cannot and should not be carried out through the National Assembly as presently constituted using the current 1999 Nigerian Constitution. This is because the current constitution not only does NOT represent the will or wishes of “we the people,” it is a flawed document conceived and hatched under a ‘Northern’ Military Government with fraudulent and unwarranted structural advantages given to Northern Nigeria, and foisted on the rest of us.

Furthermore, we believe that the threshold for amending the present constitution to reflect and effect our legitimate demands is insurmountable for the Southern zones, based on the in-built flawed assumptions in the 1999 constitution.

All Yoruba States are encouraged to carry out genuine census of how many we truly are in Yoruba land, using Lagos State example which uses 23 million people for planning as against 9 million used by the Federal Government in the sharing of revenue and resources.
We sympathize with the people of middle Belt in the onslaught on their villages by armed herdsmen committing murder and mayhem. In view of the migration of mayhem southward by these rampaging marauders, a proper tab should be kept by our communities on Okada riders and itinerant artisans in our midst to make sure there are no “Sleeper Cells” of terrorists among them, waiting for an opportunity to unleash violence on the populace.
State Assemblies, in Yoruba land should make laws against Open Grazing. We believe it is NOT the business of the Federal Government to canvass or arm-twist the state governors for cattle colonies, if need be our people would be encouraged to boycott beef from their diet to drive home the point. If we don’t eat beef, there is no need bringing cattle to our farmlands or doorsteps.
Education was paramount in Yoruba land in the past. It was the basis of the giant strides made by Yoruba at the beginning of this federation when the regions planned and executed their development programs by themselves, with education, our teeming population can be converted into human assets that will drive development in our land instead of the mass of unemployable bodies looking for jobs and ready to be recruited for nefarious activities.
As a starting point, all primary and secondary JS classes in Yoruba land must begin the study of Yoruba History and Culture as part of their courses of study in earnest. This can be accommodated under our present school management system without it being open for JS examination.

Concerted efforts must be made in developing and strengthening the youth. Youth discontent and despondency must be avoided at all costs. That is why preparing the youth for leadership is dear to VOR.

Yoruba Obas should move to withdraw from the national council of traditional rulers if the chairmanship is not made ROTATIONALbetween the North and the South. As it is, they are perceived to be subordinate to the Sultan of Sokoto. The religion of Islam should not be used as an excuse. History tells us that Islam came to Yoruba land long before the Jihadists were stopped in Oshogbo.
There should be village/community meetings all over Yoruba Land for people’s mobilization, dissemination of information of Yoruba interest, raising funds, strategizing and promoting and promoting Yoruba harmony and integration.
Our elected representatives should be invited to local meetings within their constituencies, not to hail or ask them for favors, but for them to be intimated with the challenges within the constituencies with a view of finding solutions to such problems.
The laudable DAWN initiative should be strengthened so that there would be more economic integration and improvement in road, rail and waterways links among the states in Yoruba land.
All politicians aspiring to lead our people must henceforth be those ready to serve. We are tired of politicians using our people as bargaining chips to feather their nests to the detriment of our people. Our people must also desist from selling their votes. Experience should have taught them that they sell themselves into perpetual slavery and penury even with such short-term gain

Amotekun Arrest Herder In Ondo For Allegedly Destroying Cassava Farm

SaharaReporters gathered that the cassava farm is valued at around N2m by the owner.

BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKSEP 16, 2020

Officials of Amotekun Corps in Ondo have arrested a 20-year-old Fulani herder in the Okitipupa area of the state for allegedly destroying a cassava farm.
Usman Abubakar was nabbed by the security officials after his cow feasted on the cassava farm.
SaharaReporters gathered that the cassava farm is valued at around N2m by the owner.

A member of the Amotekun Corps revealed that the farmland belongs to one Mrs Akinsuyi in the community, who reported the incident to them.
The security official said farmers in Okitipupa had always been complaining about the activity of herdsmen destroying their farmlands.
"The report we got was that herdsmen have been destroying farmlands.
"And we have also been taking note, but not until the woman who has a cassava farm in the community came to report with evidence.
"We arrested the suspect (herdsman) and immediately handed him over to the police."
A farmer in the town also confirmed the arrest of the herder.
Tee-Leo Ikoro, spokesperson for the police in Ondo State, could not be reached for comments at the time of this report.

Jegede said the people of the state would resist them. He gave the warning during a personality programme on Crest Frequency Modulation (FM) radio station, in Akure. ADVERTISING READ ALSO: Race for Jegede’s deputy kicks off, group drums support for Ajayi According to him, a recent revelation by the former Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG), Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde, that he was robbed of victory by the All Progressives Congress (APC) power brokers, and that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu did not win in that election, was instructive enough. The aspirant said that the masses of Ondo State would not allow a repeat of the 2016 experience. “Ondo State is not a conquered people or territory; so if you are coming to the state to rig, stop at the boundary. “This is because, our people have learned from that experience and are now on their toes, to resist any attempt by anybody to subvert their will. “I have known my brother, Abena (appellation for Abegunde) for a long time and I know he was saying the truth when he said Akeredolu did not win the 2016 election; that it was rigged for him.” Jegede also described as baseless, a campaign smear that he would pursue ‘Akure agenda’, being a native of Akure, the state’s capital, if voted into power. “Yes, I am a native of Akure and I am not ashamed of it, but I can also be classified as a native of other communities in the state. “I had gone round, visiting the riverside areas of Ilaje and Ese-Odo and I could feel what they were going through. From that area up to Ile-Oluji and Okeigbo, they don’t have electricity at all; unlike Akure that has a little supply “So we are going to provide electricity in these areas and also build them hospitals as they lack medical facilities and are battling with mosquito bites. Certainly, that cannot be an Akure agenda? “I have been to Akoko areas, to Okitipupa and all parts of the state and I know what their problems are,” he further explained. READ ALSO: ‘My people-oriented plans for Ondo’ — Jegede The governorship candidate, who is a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General in the state, particularly lamented the hardship that the less-privileged residents of the state were going through under the APC-led administration. “The free health services reserved for pregnant women, nursing mothers, elderly citizens, and the physically challenged people under the PDP administration are no longer there. “Our education sector to is in shamble, to the extent that, tuition fee of N35,000 in the institution is now N230,000: thus denying children of poor people access to education. Jegede said that “If I am elected governor of Ondo State, we will reduce the tuition fees of not just Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, but all tertiary institutions in the state.

Ondo 2020: How I’ll defeat Akeredolu – PDP’s Jegede

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the October 10 governorship election, in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede, has spoken on how he hopes to defeat Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that Mr Jegede won the PDP primary on Wednesday with 888 votes to defeat seven other contestants including the state’s deputy governor, Agboola Ajayi, who polled 657 votes.

Mr Jegede is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Ipele town, near Owo and a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the state.

Mr Jegede also won the PDP primary in 2016, and flew the flag of the party in that year’s governorship election, a contest he lost to Mr Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But speaking with journalists on Thursday evening in Akure about the upcoming election, he said “By the support of the people of the state and other party members, we will take over the government of Ondo State come October 2020.”

“We are all winners in Ondo State and I dedicate this victory to the people of Ondo and to my co-aspirants, who have shown sportsmanship.

“By this victory, we serve a notice on the APC that for them, the end has come. By the grace of God, with the assistance of the people and with the support of all the co-aspirants, we will take over the government of Ondo State come October 2020.”

The defeated deputy governor, Mr Ajayi, had also said he would work with Mr Jegede to defeat his principal and former ally.

Mr Akeredolu, on the other hand, has said he would win his reelection based on his performance as governor.

July 22, 2020Adejumo kabir

Two men have been caught at the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election with ballot papers already thumb-marked for Agboola Ajayi, one of the aspirants and deputy governor of the state.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that one of the men caught is s a chieftain of the party in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The spokesperson of the party, Zadok Akintoye, confirmed the development but said they were caught outside the election venue.

“Yes, it happened but not inside the hall where the election is taking place. Election is currently going on smoothly and aspirants have been told to warn their supporters against coming close to the election venue,” he told PREMIUM TIMES.

He also said he has no idea of the number of the ballot papers that the men were caught with and that all aspirants have dissociated themselves from the already thumb-marked papers.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to Mr Ajayi, Tope Okeowo, told PREMIUM TIMES that the men were caught with “specimen”.
