I have written previously about Anunuebe the giant and dreadful iroko tree. I have also read many articles on it written by different authors. But none is pointing to the uses and the locations of tree.

You may have heard about Anunuebe tree? Are you among those who think the tree is a myth that existed in Okonkwo-Umuofia’s story? Or, one of the tales by moonlight.

No. It is not. Anunuebe has been existing for ages. The barks and the leaves are potent medicines. In the course of this article, you shall learn its medicinal uses and where to find the tree.

About Anunuebe Tree[size=8pt]
Anunuebe or Nnunuebe in Igbo dialect which means bird doesn’t perch.

‘Nnunu’ or ‘Anunu’ means birds. ‘Ebe’ means never perches. The tree is called according to what it does to any living creature to come closer or touches it. It says that only powerful native doctors or medicine men go closer to it. But before that, there must be a form of appeasement inform of sacrifice.


“Anunuebe is the most powerful and fearful tree in Igboland….Anunuebe is a natural oracle..No human gets close to Anunuebe tree not even a dibia unless the spirit residing in that tree left for a mission..that’s the only time one can” ONWA.


I don’t want to dwell on the tree itself. I have seen that many people have written about it. I want to discuss what the bark and the leave of the tree are used for and whether the plant is diabolical. I will also mention the locations of the tree.

I have known And heard about Anunuebe tree for 25 years. As a little boy, I was living with my parents in Ajegunle with my two sisters and a brother. My father traveled to the village one day and returned with tree bark and some dry leaves. He called us into our rooms and told us about the tree bark and the leaves.

He placed the bark under our beds and warned us never to sweep it away.


My mother was a staunch Pentecostal believer. She kicked against it and called it Satanic. But my father defeated her by asking her to show him where it was written in the Bible that some trees are Satanic.

When she couldn’t defend her stand, we continued to sleep with the bark under our beds.

**Victim 1
A few weeks ago, a young man came running to our house. He was sweating profusely and looking like someone who saw a ghost.

He was sourcing for a particular sum of money to pay a man who claimed to be a powerful native Doctor. He told us the man called him around 5 am. He called him by his native name which just a few persons knew.

The caller introduced himself as one Witchdoctor of a certain shrine in Nsukka.
He was told that someone whom he offended has submitted his picture in his shrine to kill him. He was told he has from now till 6 pm to die. He called back to find out who the person was, he was told is a girl.

History was made as former Nigerian Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was announced as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). She will assume office on 1 March 2021 and will become the first woman and the first African to be chosen as Director-General. Her term, renewable, will expire on 31 August 2025.

“This is a very significant moment for the WTO. On behalf of the General Council, I extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as the WTO’s next Director-General and formally welcome her to this General Council meeting,” said General Council Chair David Walker of New Zealand who, together with co-facilitators Amb. Dacio Castillo (Honduras) and Ambassador Harald Aspelund of Iceland led the nine-month DG selection process.

“Dr. Ngozi, on behalf of all members I wish to sincerely thank you for your graciousness in these exceptional months, and for your patience. We look forward to collaborating closely with you, Dr. Ngozi, and I am certain that all members will work with you constructively during your tenure as Director-General to shape the future of this organization,” he added.

In reaction to the new post, Dr. Ngozi said; “I am honored to have been selected by WTO members as WTO Director-General. A strong WTO is vital if we are to recover fully and rapidly from the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic. I look forward to working with members to shape and implement the policy responses we need to get the global economy going again. My kids look malnourished and unkempt always. I am always ashamed to take them out with me because they are not presentable.

Last year, I had a contract that took me outside the state. I spent about 4 months doing the job. I started receiving complaints about my wife from the neighbors. I called my mother, she confirmed the bad news.

My wife started sleeping around. I was told she goes to the Aboki (Security guard from the North) every night and spends the night there most times.


I called her to confirm the rumor and my wife had the audacity to say it is the truth.

“And so what? Do me, I do you”. These were my wife’s words to me on the phone.

I didn’t understand the ‘do me, I do you’ version. So, I called her back the following day to ask her to explain what she meant by that.

My wife accused me of living with another woman where I was working and hung the phone. I braced up and completed the job in the city.

The very day I returned home, I didn’t inform anyone. I made sure I came into town in the night. I returned by 11: 25 pm. I checked my kids and wife in their rooms. I found only four kids. I didn’t see my wife too.

I ran to my mother’s bedroom and knocked. I knew it was wrong waking her at that time, owing to her health status. But I had to. She heard my voice and became alerted. The moment she saw me, she was full of life again.

I peeped into her room and saw my 2 youngest kids clinching around her on her bed. I spread the mat in my mother’s room and spent the rest of the sleepless night there.

My wife came back in the morning, looking like a madwoman. She was looking like leftover food. She didn’t say anything to me and I didn’t ask her either.

I always hear people say; "what God cannot do does not exist". I understand this grammar but I have never thought deep into it. But today, I saw a testimony that gave me true and deep meaning to the saying.
I keep saying to myself, God is faithful.
