SLEEPING ON YOUR SIDE Dr Ehrlich believes sleeping on your side is one of the better positions you can fall asleep in. He recommended using a supportive pillow for the head and down the side of the body. 'From a structural, neurological and muscular perspective, as well as for your airway it is kinder to the body,' he said. 'It also happens to be better for digestion, particularly lying on the left side, considering where the oesophagus enters the stomach.'

CURLING UP IN THE FOETAL POSITION Sydney-based sleep coach Elina Winnel from My Sleep Coach said that people need to avoid falling asleep in the curled-up foetal position because of how detrimental it can be. 'What we may not realise is that we are putting our body into a fight or flight posture,' she said. 'If we go to sleep in this position, we may be signalling to our nervous system that we are in fight or flight, and that it is not safe to go to sleep.' She recommends sleeping with an open posture instead as it helps to open up the lung area, allowing people to take deep breaths. Dominique,mynd44,lalasticlala

What you need to know about your Blood
|
Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life. Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and child care and during the emergency response to man-made and natural disasters. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. An adequate supply can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary, unpaid blood donors. However, in many countries, blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. The host country for World Blood Donor Day 2018 events is Greece, through the Hellenic National Blood Centre. The global event will be held in Athens on 14 June 2018. http://www.who.int/campaigns/world-blood-donor-day/2018 Cc Dominique,Lala, seun, lets save a life together!!!

THE DIAGNOSIS OF POLYCYTHEMIA VERA Doctors usually diagnose PV based on the signs and symptoms, your age medical history backed up by the appropriate test results. During the physical examination, doctors tend to look for an enlarged spleen, bleeding gums and any sign of redness on your face. Once it is confirmed that you have polycythemia, the next step is to enquire out whether you have the primary polycythemia (polycythemia vera) or secondary polycythemia. COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT(CBC,FBC) Often, the primary test used to diagnose PV is a CBC. The CBC measures many components of your blood. This test checks mainly involves your hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin) and hematocrit (hee-MAT-oh-crit) levels. A high level of hemoglobin or hematocrit may be a sign of PV.The CBC also detects the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in your blood. Abnormal observations may be a result of PV, a blood disorder, an infection, or another blood-related condition. BONE MARROW TEST Bone marrow tests can whether your bone marrow is healthy or not. These tests will also indicate whether your bone marrow is making an adequate number of blood cells or not. The two most common bone marrow tests are aspiration (as-pi-RA-shun) and biopsy. For aspiration, your doctor removes a small amount of bone marrow fluid through a needle which after being observed under a microscope indicate the severity of the condition. GET TESTED TODAY!!!

SYMPTOMS At first, you may not notice any problems. But when you start experiencing symptoms, you may have: •Frequent Headaches and dizziness •Double vision syndrome •Excessive Sweating at night •Reddened face that appears like sunburn or blushing •Immoderate Weakness •Frequent Dizziness •Unexplainable Weight loss •Shortness of breath •Tingling or burning hands or feet •Swelling of a joint.
|
CAUSES You don’t simply “catch” polycythemia vera-like you do a cold or a flu. It’s something you get because of the malfunctioning of the JAK2 gene. This gene is supposed to ensure that your bone marrow doesn’t produce too many RBCs. Your bone marrow generally makes three types of blood cells: red, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen, white provides immunity against infections, and platelets clot the blood to stop bleeding. Most people with polycythemia vera have too many red blood cells. But the disease may also cause you to have too many of the white blood cells and platelets. Although it’s rare, parents can pass this broken gene to children. Most likely, the problem in your JAK2 gene happens over the course of your life.

CAUSES & SYMPTOMS OF HIGH RED BLOOD CELL COUNT Polycythemia vera Polycythemia vera is a type of blood cancer in which your bone marrow makes too many RBCs, which causes your blood to become too thick. Which will make you more likely to have blood clots, a stroke, or even a heart attack. This disease actually develops very slowly, usually over a period several years. Although it can even be life-threatening if you don’t get any treatment, then most people have a good chance of living a long life if they are getting the proper nutrition and exercise. Most people find out they have this condition when they’re 60 or older. But it can happen at any age. It’s more common among men than women. If you have polycythemia vera, the first sign may be when a routine blood test shows that you have a high number of blood cells than the rest. The treatment you get totally depends on your age and your particular case.if you don’t get any symptom this disease may even go undetected that’s why a preventive health care checkup is vital as you can’t always depend upon the symptoms as they can be very vague. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/polycythemia-vera/symptoms-causes/syc-20355850 Cc Lala, domnique, seun |
The health sector needs to be sanitized and overhauled...there should be clear separation of duties and independence. If anarchy persist,we all will loose and the patient will suffer. |
How much is it |
Our health sector needs total overhaul |
Nice one...I pray concerned people here get called up |
charlsecy:I only defined it the way they presented it bro...No Dr will diagnose a patient as hypertensive from one reading. |
davidgrace:You need a little more expertise to use a manual sphyg. An electronic sphyg is a whole lot easier to use. For the manual sphyg you will also need a stethoscope which you will use to listen for the beats...i will advise you take it to a practitioner near you to help you out. |
Katier00:Has she been on anti-hypertensive drugs? Most older people develop progressive stiffening of their arterial tree as they age, which leads to a continuous elevation in systolic blood pressure. With the diastolic blood pressure remaining normal or decreasing with age, elderly people develop a widening of their pulse pressure (the difference between the systolic and the diastolic blood pressure). The elevation in systolic pressure increases left ventricular work and the risk of left ventricular hypertrophy, whereas the decrease in diastolic blood pressure may compromise coronary blood flow...You can see a doctor for more clarification thanks |
Katier00:140 is considered normal in some quaters,At medicpath we use 130 threshold. However,In people aged over 50 years high systolic blood pressure (above 140 mm Hg) is considered a greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than high diastolic blood pressure. We always advise good exercise and reduce sodium intake while changing diet to more of fruits and vegetables, potassium, and calcium. |
Treatment Regular health checks are the best way to monitor your blood pressure. Regular health checks are the best way to monitor your blood pressure. You can visit our clinic MEDICPATH CLINICAL LABORATORIES LTD For FREE BP check. While blood pressure is best regulated through the diet before it reaches the stage of hypertension, there is a range of treatment options. Lifestyle adjustments are the standard first-line treatment for hypertension. Regular physical exercise Doctors recommend that patients with hypertension engage in 30 minutes of moderate-intensity, dynamic, aerobic exercise. This can include walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming on 5 to 7 days of the week. Stress reduction Avoiding stress, or developing strategies for managing unavoidable stress, can help with blood pressure control. Using alcohol, drugs, smoking, and unhealthy eating to cope with stress will add to hypertensive problems. These should be avoided. Smoking can raise blood pressure. Giving up smoking reduces the risk of hypertension, heart conditions, and other health issues.
