Thursday night’s Street Fighter V update added stage KOs, among other things, like Express Men’s bad-ass, Urien, and a little thing called Versus CPU mode.

The update also installed some more shocking, however: a rootkit for PC versions of the game. As The Register reported late yesterday,

A fresh update for Capcom’s Street Fighter V for PCs includes a knock-out move: a secret rootkit that gives any installed application kernel-level privileges.

This means any malicious software on the system can poke a dodgy driver installed by SFV to completely take over the Windows machine. Capcom claims it uses the driver to stop players from hacking the high-def beat ‘em up to cheat. Unfortunately, the code is so badly designed, it opens up a full-blown local backdoor.

So if Capcom’s nickle-and-dime approach to downloadable content wasn’t already getting on your nerves, don’t worry, because now, if you owned the game on PC at least, they may have just blown up your computer’s security settings.

Don’t worry though, as Capcom was eventually able to roll out a fix for the issue its update had created, that is they reverted to an earlier PC version of the game while still including the new content.

The the part of the update that caused the problem was introduced with the intention of preventing people from cheating in the game and taking advantage of currency exploits. As Capcom announced on Steam just prior to the update:

As it turns out, people really want to turn the clock back to 1914. Or, they really want to get a sneak peek at one of this year's biggest video games. It's one or the other.

Whichever it is, EA DICE's Battlefield 1 had a wildly successful beta. From August 30 through September 8, some 13.2 million players got a preview of Battlefield 1. As EA outlines on the game's site, this resulted in 62.2 million kills while on a horse, 23.8 million road kills, and 28.9 million melee kills. There's no word on how many people died of a broken heart because their love never made it back home.

While EA calls this the biggest beta in company history, it might actually be one of the biggest betas in video game history. For comparison's sake, Overwatch's beta had 9.7 million players, Star Wars Battlefront's had 9.5 million, and The Division's was at 6.4 million. Those are some extremely popular titles, and Battlefield bested them all by at least 3.5 million.

A glance at some recent history reveals why this is fantastic news for EA. After Battlefront's successful beta, the publisher shifted its expectations for the Star Wars game from 10 million units shipped to 13 million units shipped. It ended up surpassing that and shipping 14 million. Assuming people are similarly smitten by Battlefield 1, this marketing event may mean that it'll end up a bigger cash cow than EA previously imagined.

For months, fans who downloaded Resident Evil 7 Beginning Hour demo have been wondering what the hell we’re supposed to do with a useless in-game finger. Well, we might be on the cusp of getting an answer on that front.

According to the Playstation blog, the Beginning Hour demo will receive a “Twilight version” update today, which is supposed to expand on “what you can do and explore” within the demo—which makes sense, given that there were a few items within the demo that players found no use for the first time around. Appropriately, the footage Capcom just released gives us a glimpse of more areas of the house that weren’t previously accessible, as well as some more clues as to what’s going on with the Baker family. They, uh, really like feasting on guts. They also love kicking the player’s ass.

Resident Evil Is Getting A New Full-CG Animated Movie
It’s called Resident Evil: Vendetta and will be out spring 2017 in Japan.

Announced at the Tokyo Game Show, Resident Evil: Vendetta (Biohazard: Vendetta in Japan) will be executive produced by Takashi Shimizu, who is best known for creating The Grudge and directed by Takanori Tsujimoto and produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

The full CG movie will feature an original storyline, but, according to Kobayashi (via Natalie) will be like Resident Evil 1. No word yet on an international release.

Not everywhere, but according to Niantic, the device will be out “in much of the world next week.”

Pokémon Go Plus is a Bluetooth enabled device that lets you enjoy Pokémon Go, doing basic in-game activities like collect Poké Balls and capture Pokémon, without having to get out your phone.

WB Games has been giving players the run around with PC support as of late, but it looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Mortal Kombat XL has now been confirmed for PC release, or at least Kombat Pack 2 is heading to Steam.

The port is still not being handled by NeverRealm Studios, but by a company called Qloc. They are a Polish company that has been responsible for most of Capcom's recent PC ports, so at least we can rest easy about the quality.

Current owners of Mortal Kombat X on Steam will get a free update on October 4 that fixes all problems with netcode and stability. They won't, however, be given Kombat Pack 2 for free (or any of the other crap that comes in XL). I feel that is the wrong move, but what can you do?

Guerrilla Cambridge's RIGS: Mechanized Combat League was an early PlayStation VR favorite of mine; so early, in fact, the device was still called "Project Morpheus" back when I previewed the game. To date, it has largely been billed as a multiplayer mech-based arena sports title, but as we learned from the studio today, there's also going to be a single-player component. More meat on the bones.

"In Career Mode, you and your team of AI pilots rise through the leagues as you defeat other teams, earn fame and fortune, and gain access to new Rigs and pilots," says Guerrilla's Samrat Sharma. "In total, there are 24 unique Rigs to unlock, each with their own style of play. While climbing the ranks in Career Mode you will also impress sponsors and obtain exclusive sponsorship deals, liveries, and pilot outfits."

I keep going back and forth on whether or not I'll get a PlayStation VR during the launch window in October, but if I do, RIGS will probably be up for serious consideration. Knowing the game isn't multiplayer-only makes it that much more compelling.

The next Heroes of the Storm update will be giving out some characters for a limited time. On September 13, anyone who logs into the game client will be gifted a character.

The choices will be Tyrande, Thrall, and Anub'arak.

A second set will be on offer for players who already have any of the free characters.

This set includes Nazeebo, Uther, and Sonya.

If you have one of the first three, Nazeebo will be available while having two grants you Nazeebo and Sonya, etc.

That is a little confusing, but there is a final caveat.

If you own all six of those characters, you'll be given 4,000 gold.

That basically allows you to get a couple of lower-cost characters or one 4,000-gold avatar.

I've never managed to get into Heroes of the Storm, but I am absolutely terrible at MOBAs.

That seems to be the one genre of games that I just cannot understand.

Either way, free characters are free characters, so I think I'll re-download the client just to grab them.

Ubisoft's cutting ties with two of its free-to-play titles that weren't as successful as it had hoped. Later this year, the servers for both Ghost Recon Phantoms and The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot will be permanently shut down.

Ghost Recon Phantoms is a shooter based on Ubisoft's Ghost Recon franchise. It has been around for four years, but that comes to an end on December 1. According to SteamDB, Phantoms has around 1,000 concurrent players at any given time (although this number is likely low given that some people play directly through UPlay). This is a sliver of the 20,000 concurrents it was pulling two years ago.

Accompanying the announcement, Ubisoft disabled the Phantoms' online shop. In-game currency can no longer be bought. However, existing already-purchased currency won't be refunded or transferred over to any other Ubisoft game. It simply has to be used before December 1.

The other title, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, sees its shuttering a bit sooner. That game will cease operations on October 25. In a surprisingly sterile FAQ, the publisher outlines the same details as with Phantoms: It wasn't as successful as everyone hoped and no refunds will be offered.
