Tim Flack‚ spokesperson for the SA Defence Force Union‚ has laid charges of hate speech against Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini for his remarks that foreigners were "lice". The charges were laid at SA Human Right Commission on Wednesday. Three weeks ago‚ King Zwelithini, said foreigners must go back to where they came from. "We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries.” He denied the statement until media replayed a recording of it widely‚ Then the king defended his statement‚ saying the media "misinterpreted his words and distorts them to sell newspapers". Interestingly, King Zwelithini's wife number three, Mantfombi Dlamini,is Swaziland's King Mswati III's sister as well as daughter of Sobhuza II of Swaziland. We believe if King Zwelithini is dead serious about chucking foreigners out of this country,he should start with his own foreign wife and all his other in-laws who came from Swaziland. King Zwelithini pulled a shocker just before Christmas, a few weeks ago, when he sent an SOS to government demanding an extra R10 MIllion bailout so that he could afford to get to the year end. What shocking is that the Zulu king had already been given R54 Million which failed to sustain him from January 2014 to December of the very same year. The seemingly flamboyant king has 27 children with 6 wives. The king spent nearly R4m on his lavish two- day traditional wedding to his sixth wife in July; R10 000 on a birthday cake; and R120 000 on crockery and cutlery he bought while in Cape Town. In the past week‚ at least five people have been killed in xenophobic violence in Durban townships‚ with the violence spreading to Primrose township near Germiston‚ East of Johannesburg last night. Foreigners are currently being evacuated out of Primrose area with the help of the Gauteng police. King Goodwill Zwelithini's reported comments that foreigners must leave has been blamed for the fresh wave of xenophobic attacks, this time in Isipingo and uMlazi. Cars, minibus taxis, a house and foreign- owned businesses were stoned as hordes of people allegedly chased them out of their businesses saying, the “king has spoken”. The foreigners have hit back at the king and called for him to chase his Swazi wife, Queen Zola Mafu, out of the country first. They blamed the government for not denouncing his comments, saying the attacks had left their shops exposed, with thousands of rand worth of stock looted as a result on Monday. Flack laid the charges in his personal capacity with the support of the union. He said that political leaders have done little to stop the violence and people complaining about Xenophobia on social media were ineffective. Flack said: “Twitter activists are playing hairdryer politics. I decided to do something. The king needs to account and be charged for inciting this violence.” The Constitution protects freedom of speech but does not protect hate speech. Hate speech is defined as “propaganda for war; incitement of imminent violence; or advocacy of hatred that is based on race ‚ ethnicity‚ gender or religion‚ and that constitutes incitement to cause harm". On Thursday‚ a peace march is taking place in Durban led by KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu and Ethekwini mayor James Nxumalo. A peace bus carrying Johannesburg residents run by social media expert Khaya Dlanga and Shaka Sisulu left Johannesburg on Wednesday night to join the march. President Zuma is expected to speak about xenophobia in parliament on Thursday. |
Some South Africans have accused immigrants of taking jobs and opportunities away from them. The latest violence followed reported comments by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, an influential figure among the Zulu ethnic group, that foreigners should “pack their bags” and leave. The king has since appealed for an end to the unrest.
