Literature / Need A 'peng' Book Cover? by megabeatsonline: 10:41am On Jan 04, 2020
Good morning dear Nairaland writer.

I'm sure you agree with me that Nigerian books are often not read because of the stigma of poor quality. We're here to change that, by helping authors meet international publishing standards, whether it's fiction or nonfiction!

You have access to:
1. Professionally designed beautiful book covers & mockups;
2. Professional book formatting (interior layout and design)for ebooks and print;
3. Author media kit design;
4. Book coaching if you need help with the journey of writing a good book;
5. Editing, if you've not done that already.

You simply decide what services you need, and at affordable rates too.

We are Leaftop publishing, and we're on Instagram @leaftopbooks and whatsapp: 09093937697.

Here are sample projects we've worked on!

Education / Studying Hard Is Pointless. Do Better By Studying Smart. by megabeatsonline: 3:57pm On Sep 15, 2018
Work is simply the effort we put into doing things. Bigger things require more effort as opposed to smaller ones which require less. However, the results we get are not only proportional to how much work we put into getting things done, they also depend on whether we work right or not.

Although many reasons account for academic under-performance in school, many students struggle simply because they don't 'work right' academically.

The learning process has stages designed to occur one after the other.
There's the acquisition phase where you gather new information—a new topic treated in class for instance. It enters via our special senses—we listen with our ears and see with our eyes, and sometimes need to touch, smell or taste an object (lab sessions).

The second phase of learning is storage. Whatever information we feed on gets stored like books on a library shelf. It's broken down into small pieces first, and then these bits are joined end to end and arranged in the best way possible. This occurs during critical reasoning, when we try to make sense of what we learn. This new information structure is then filed away with a new label or attached to an existing 'related' memory.

Moving on, the third phase is retrieval. Perhaps it is the most important of all, because it is the basis for remembrance. Our ability to remember things depends on how well we store them and how well we can retrieve them.

There is no point knowing so much if we cannot remember what we know when we need it. Usually, this occurs because it wasn't stored properly, or we didn't use it long enough for it to stay. When we learn new things, the old ones get pushed back and if we don't use them, from time to time, we'll forget them.

Since learning occurs through these three distinct stages, it follows that anybody can learn better by doing things to facilitate these phases and that's the focus of this piece.

Studying smart is about making the most out of the time and effort you invest in school work, as opposed to making unfocused attempts to study hard. To survive and succeed in university, you need to study smart rather than hard. These techniques definitely help:

1. Do Groundwork During The Semester

Unfortunately, a large percentage of the student population wait till it's too late before doing academic ground work. You shouldn't be studying new concepts days to exams. Doing all-nighters some days before an examination will not only force you to rush through data instead of studying properly, but it will also exhaust you to a large extent with the risk of breaking down.

2. Record and replay lectures

If you record lecture sessions, listening to them later is another great way to study—especially if you're an auditory learner. It works by making stronger impressions through auditory stimulation of the brain. Take notes during lectures as your device records everything (this way you can focus on the class). Then alternate between reading your notes and listening to the recorded session during study sessions. This technique enablesyou to detect points you missed out while taking notes earlier on, and it allows you to hear and see what you're learning.

3. Learn the same things in different ways

The brain responds to a variety of stimuli. By learning the same thing using different methods, you stimulate different areas of your brain, and you understand and retain better. You get a stronger impression of what you're learning. For instance, you could watch a YouTube video teaching the concept you're learning. Afterwards, you could then read graphic text books and make study notes from them. Go on to record your notes as audio files and finally, summarize the concept visually using a mind map.

4. Review information periodically

This technique is the practical application of the law of repetition. By reviewing what you study periodically, you push information from short term to long-term memory. Attempting to cram everything you care to remember in one sitting will take twice as much effort as you would exert to do so by periodic repetition. The latter allows your brain to rest and recover, giving it time to process and store the information.

5. Link what you’re learning with that you already know

Formal education is structured such that what students learn during their program follows a sequence. Therefore, the residual knowledge you have from previous classes almost always find relevance in current ones. Moreover, abstract concepts can be linked with physical properties. For instance, you'd easily remember that a plant is poisonous if it has striking red flowers. The stronger the link, the better!

6. Simplify and Compress everything you learn

School gives us too much materials to study. It's senseless, trying to know every single detail, especially when voluminous texts are involved. The smart thing to do is to simplify and then summarize everything you learn. By doing this regularly, you train yourself to quickly identify key point. Consequently, you'll be able to skip large amounts of irrelevant data. While you study, make sure you pay attention to recurring patterns within the subject matter. By noticing and understanding these patterns, you chart your way through the subject and understand the framework of the subject. As you study further, whenever and wherever applicable, simplify by using analogies. These mental pictures act like glue.

7. Take notes by hand instead of using your smartphone or laptop

This works because the process enables students to process the information they receive during lectures, reframing it while they write. Using a laptop or similar devices bypasses this critical process. To an extenet, you rob yourself of a chance to understand better, because you’d have to concentrate on typing, while the class goes on. If you happen to recieve lecture notes by mail, focus on listening as the lecture is ongoing. Still, scribbling a few points is benefitial.

8. Type your written lecture notes

After taking notes by hand, you can push further by typing (or alternatively, rewriting) them after classes, if you type fast and you've got some free time. It may seem weird, but rewriting notes is a great way to memorize and study. It's based on repetition and it works by reintroducing information to your brain. It's especially good for situations where you take notes in a haste, and need to reorganize the information into categories, principles or related concepts. While adding an aesthetic touch to your notes, it's a great way to study because it forces you to think through typing.

9. Concentrate when you study

Whenever you study, don't multitask. It makes you less productive. Effective students focus on one thing at a time. What's the point of studying if you're constantly distracted by tweets and social media notifications? Close all browser tabs that are not relevant to what you intend to do, put your phone away (or in airplane mode), and clear the clutter from your study area and just focus.

10. Use Mnemonics

Mnemonics are words, sentences, abbreviations used to remember especially large volumes of information. When you study, separate concepts from facts. Concepts convey the main idea of the topic, and facts just need to be memorized. Then write down the facts and try to line them up using their first letters, in such a way that it forms a meaningful word or something easy to remember. Alternatively, you could make sentences with words starting with the same letters as those in your list. For instance, SMART for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time- bound. Use them whenever and wherever they're applicable.

11. Chunk listed items

With respect to linguistics, a chunk is a phrase or group of words which can be learned as a unit. The principle, can be applied to school work as well. Since short term memory is limited to the number of items it can process, by grouping items into related concepts, you can remember better and learn more items. We unconsciously use this method to memorize phone numbers. Instead of 2-3-4-0-5-9, you chunk by grouping 234-059. That way you memorize two items instead of six (our brains see it this way). It employs the rule of association, chunking groups of items into larger meaningful units. When you need to memorize a long list of points in any subject, try grouping them.

12. Test yourself frequently

Decades of research has shown that self-assessment is crucial for anyone to improve performance, even academically. That's why good textbooks come with practice questions after every chapter and it explains why students who practice with past examination questions or similar, are more likely to score higher. Don't just read your notes passively. Study smart by regularly quizzing yourself on key concepts and equations. This way, you make all your mistakes outside exam conditions, and profit from them.

13. Don't pull all-nighters, drink a lot of water and exercise often

Unless it's absolutely necessary, avoid staying up overnight to study. It's unhealthy, and completely unproductive. Getting enough sleep helps us focus better and keep stress under control. It's a recipe for good grades because it enhances retention, making study sessions productive. Learning the most difficult materials just before bed is smart because they're easy to recall the next day. If you're a nocturnal learner, get enough rest during the day to make up for your study nights.

Also, dehydration is bad for you. Your brain works better when you're well fed and hydrated. Also, exercise is good for you generally. Physical exercise improves blood circulation, makes you stronger and improves concentration. These benefits translate into better grades over time.

To wrap things up, the key to effective studying and building your grade point average isn’t cramming or studying longer but studying smarter. I know our degrees are tedious.

But, if you're willing to put in the effort, having a solid transcript is totally worth the pain, even for pharmacists. That's why I wrote Grade Point Beyond Average: The Commonsense Guide To Getting Better Grades And Building Your CGPA.

I've managed to survive in school with this knowledge, and I'm not doing bad at all.

Just click https://koyejosowunmi..com/p/blog-page.html to read a third of the book.

If you spend a little time to really understand yourself, you'll get better by investing time and energy in what works.

Just dump all the randomness and start climbing up the smart way!

Education / 8 Issues Only People Within Roommates Can Relate With by megabeatsonline: 11:21pm On Oct 10, 2017
"It's not a good thing at all, they beef
about
each other. They're under the same roof,
but
don't talk to each other, even if they're
dying to
on the inside. Little things cause
quarrels, and no
one wants to apologize.
When they hit crossroads, the either
make up, or
part ways"

That's what an anonymous friend of
mine said from her experience.

It's called roommate rivalry.

People are annoying. It's a question of
how we
handle them. Most of us have short
emotional
fuses, that explode with the slightest
provocation. A minute few rarely get
angry. The
good news is, you only need to be
somewhere in
the middle to get along with the rest
of
humanity. It's all part of the symphony
of life.

Connecting socially is a major 'live
wire in the
electric box' of school life. However,
whether you
live on or off campus, you can't rule
out the
possibility of a few heads to heads
occurring,
especially when you share living space
with one
or more people.

We've gotta hand it to the cool headed
guys who
put up with our annoying selves.

They're gems!

Clashes occur when the personality
differences
between roommates (or flatmates)
cause
emotional tensions— which escalate
quickly into
violence. It's common for one or both
individuals
to engage in 'word
combat' (exchanging words in
a fit of rage, that are often
provocative), and
most people experience the heat
during the early
days of living together— newbies
adjust to
themselves and their environment.
Occasionally,
even old friends fight.

If you've got someone you share (or
intend to
share) living space with in college,
chances are
at least one of these bombs are likely
to go off:

Cleanliness:
Keeping the house clean can be a
difficult task for some people,
especially if you
can't tolerate untidiness.

Space:
Problems can arise in terms of how
much
space one person claims for himself
(consciously
or not).

Bath and Kitchen:
Ideally, these two should too
the charts. Have you ever seen dirt plates left
unwashed for two weeks or felt
nauseated at the
sight of a toilet someone forgot to
flush? I need
not say more.

Partying:
It's normal for students to cool off by
partying, but when your roommate
brings home
drunk friends who smoke, it can be an
issue.

Sharing:
Contrary to popular beliefs, no wanting
to share doesn't explicitly make you
stingy. Some
people aren't cool with the idea of
others using
their stuff without their consent.

Visitors:
While this is not much of a problem
with
friends living together, No body likes to
leave the
room always, because of too many
visitors.

Food:
When only one person cooks, and only
one
person eats, what do you think will
happen?
'forks of fury!'

Rental delay:
We're not always without financial
constraints (especially as students),
but no body
wants to have to evacuate the room,
because of
rental delays from number two.

Having said all that, if arguments are a
constant
feature in your school life, do employ
less life-
threatening methods to resolve the
conflicts.

#1 Set Boundaries:
One of the things most people don't
do when
they move in together, is to set
boundaries. It
can be an awkward thing to do, but it
saves a lot
of trouble. Talk about each others'
likes and
dislikes, and what you can't tolerate. It
becomes
everyone's responsibility to respect
and adjust to
these boundaries.

#2 Dialogue:
Learning to cool off in the heat of
an argument (before sparks fly) takes
conscious
effort and practice over time. usually,
emotional
explosions start out small, piling up
over time.
Before a huge pile forms, it's advisable
to talk
about the issue with the person(s)
involved.
Clearly state what it is that's pissing
you off,
asking them to stop or modify it. You'd
be
surprised how much gets solved, just
from sitting
down to talk about it.

#3 Call A Truce:
If the friendship matters to you, or you
just
want peace in your life, or you want to
be the
'mature one', make the first move.
Apologize.
Some people have massive egos that
prevent
them from admitting that they're
wrong (even
when it's obvious that they're). Pop
their
balloons by calling a truce.

There are a whole bunch of other
methods I
haven't listed here that work. Do you
know any?

Health / Let's Discuss Hypertension! The 3 Part Exposé, by The Blue Pharmacist by megabeatsonline: 8:57am On Mar 14, 2017
Good morning nairalanders! starting today, we're discussing 'The 3 part exposé;- compilations that will leave you better informed about hypertension'

Drop your opinions and commentary, let's learn.

In every healthcare institution nationwide,
patients with a high blood pressure are regularly
encountered.

A senior colleague, told me during
his externship training that hypertension
medication, were always being requested for at
the community pharmacy where he was then.

In most extended families, there are one or two or more individuals managing a high blood pressure
condition.

Some manage it effectively, sustaining
a good quality of life. Others manage it poorly and
as a result show no signs of progress and are
lucky to still be alive.

Sadly, a lot of people don't
understand how to handle the condition
optimally.

In our various offices, we are subjected
to a high amount of work load, different from
individual to individual, depending on the the work
place and various working conditions.

As a result,
we are always constantly under stress.

Coupled
with hectic living and the typical hustling lifestyle
of a typical Nigerian, the stress eventually causes
us to break down.

Genetically, some of us aren't
'favoured' so to say, seeing that there's a link between genetics and hypertensive tendencies. Therefore, a person with a family history of
hypertension, ought to be on guard.

Environmental factors, ranging from lifestyle to dieting, and amounts of physical activity, also
determine who gets to
be hypertensive or not.
But then, is hypertension a death sentence?

The answer is 'It doesn't have to be!'

This brings us to today's question;

What Is Hypertension? (part 1)

"Hypertension is a medical condition
characterized by an elevated blood pressure
reading— The force exerted on the blood vessels,
as a result of the pumping action of the heart.

Blood moves through arteries and veins, from the
lungs to the heart and then from the heart to the body, travelling a long distance, and carrying a lot
of substances.

When blood is moving with a higher pressure than normal, the occurrence is known as hypertension.

Clinically, the optimal
blood pressure value is 140/90 mmHg.

The upper figure (140mmHg) is the systolic pressure—the
force with which blood leaves the heart to the
rest of the body.

The lower figure (90mmHg) is the diastolic pressure— the force at which blood enters the heart, from the rest of the body.

This means that generally, a blood pressure reading
that's above this, is considered as a high blood
pressure, and anyone with such blood pressure
readings, is hypertensive.

Hypertension is
generally of two types, though it occurs in other
special cases.

(a) Primary hypertension, that is
nonspecific and due to an interplay of genetic and
environmental factors;

(b) Secondary hypertension, that is specific to an already
existing disease. Kidney diseases and hormonal disorders are the commonest causes.

Hypertension generally, is caused and/or worsened by excessive salt intake, alcohol intake,
tobacco smoking, obesity, depression, certain
drugs and genetic factors.

The life of Death
Death a very big critic of life that swallows the joy of livelihood;
Death a riot that hangs the face with tears;
Death a friend that gathers hypocrites to weep;
Death a foul music to the soul;
Death the commander of agony and sorrow;
Death the whirlwind of disarray;
Death the showstopper of gifts and talent;
Death the arranger of the evil transformation;
Death the Hitler of times and seasons;
Death the word that craves for every soul.

Health / Re: Please I Need A Permanent Cure For Tonsillitis by megabeatsonline: 11:42pm On Mar 07, 2017
Hello. Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, either caused by bacteria or viral infections. in the case of bacterial, antibiotics are needed. if viral, viral infections run their course so you'd only need to manage symptoms. If the inflammation is severe, then that's when surgery is required and its a minor one. Recurring tonsilitis is a problem. like the guys said.. if it's recurring then surgery is needed.

Careful what you hold dear, everything but the grace of God eventually finishes or end. Even our precious lives can't stand the test of time.

Imagine the sheer waste of killing a fellow human just to gain a few millions/thousand to buy a car, house, drinks, girls etc... Smh.

Business / Why WE And Our Business Stand Out! by megabeatsonline: 5:05am On Nov 18, 2016
It's not a mackerel, or a sardine, but it's catfish.
It's not your average 'point and kill'. It's Dried
Catfish.

Yes, whole dried fish. But it's not the average
roadside smoked catfish some people buy.

No, this is something new. It's different! It's the
SHOJAG brand of OVEN DRIED CATFISH!. Yes,
it's oven dried. Got you right?

So what's the difference between ordinary dried
fish, and SHOJAG brand of dried fish?

The difference is that WE OFFER YOU QUALITY,
WE OFFER YOU 100% VALUE FOR YOUR
MONEY!

Our FISH is VALUE-ADDED.

Each piece of fish passes through three
processing stages and then a final DRYING
STAGE.

Every fish is Killed (we process live fish), Gutted
(we remove intestines and gills ; unlike road side
smoked fish), And Rinsed Twice, making it SAND,
INTESTINE and INSECT FREE.

We Dry our fish via a PURPOSE BUILT FISH
SMOKING OVEN.

Finally, QUALITY CONTROL and attractive
packaging, that makes it DUST FREE.
You can actually tear open a pack, STRAIGHT TO
THE POT!

THE BEST PART ABOUT OUR FISH IS THAT ITS
POCKET FRIENDLY!

So WHO CAN EAT OUR FISH?

Well, there are no
restrictions at all. NO ADDITIVES, and NO SALT
Content. So it's good for the elderly and
hypertensive as well. Bones become chewable,
and It's non fattening because it's dried, it's all
PROTEIN.

This means You can EAT A PIECE of WHOLE
FISH COMPLETELY.

We (and our existing customers) GUARANTEE a
SHELF - LIFE of 2 months of proper storage.
Make sure to store in a cool DRY AERATED
place, FREE from DUST and MOISTURE. DO NOT
REFRIGERATE.

HOW CAN YOU GET A PACK (placing Orders)?

You probably have an event(birthdays, weddings,
etc) or you are a caterer (restaurants) trying to
up your menu, you want to distribute / market, or
you just want to consume directly.

The good news is that we are based in LAGOS,
and expanding.

enquiries?
