Nairaland / General / Airbnb, IOC And IPC Announce Summer Festival Of Olympian And Paralympian Online by MELLIS(m): 8:49pm On Jul 16, 2020
Airbnb, IOC and IPC Announce Summer Festival of Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences Hosted by Superstar Athletes

With the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 postponed until 2021, Airbnb, the IOC, and the IPC will bring the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics online with a curated program of activities hosted by athletes for the first time in history Airbnb, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) are announcing a five-day summer festival featuring more than 100 Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences hosted virtually by some of the world’s best athletes. The festival of Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences will kick off with an opening act on July 24, when the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were originally scheduled to begin and is an opportunity for athletes to generate income while they share their passion for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their sport with guests.

“At a time when it is difficult for people to gather and celebrate the exceptional performance of athletes, Airbnb is proud to host the summer festival which is a new way to experience the Olympic and Paralympic spirit online. Guests will be able to connect and interact with some of the most elite competitors within the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, giving them even more reasons to cheer them on next year,” said Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia.

Throughout the five days of programming across multiple time zones, the lineup will showcase a variety of interactive Online Experiences that guests can book* on Airbnb from July 22. Spectators can also watch select Online Experiences live or on replay on Airbnb and Olympic and Paralympic YouTube channels. While many hosts will continue to offer their activities after the event ends, like the art of reinvention with Olympian Simidele Adeagbo (Skelton, Nigeria) and positive thinking with Paralympic hero Stephen Miller (athletics, Great Britain), several will be once-in-a-lifetime Online Experiences available exclusively during the festival, like:

* July 25: Build resilience to overcome obstacles with Yusra Mardini (swimming, IOC Refugee Olympic Team Rio 2016), learn about returning to the sport after motherhood with Allyson Felix (athletics, USA), and work up a sweat in an inclusive session with Tatyana McFadden (athletics, USA),

* July 26: Cook up a storm with legend Colin Jackson (athletics, Great Britain), join a scenic training ride with Jonny Brownlee (triathlon, Great Britain), and discover velodrome secrets with Elia Viviani (cycling track, Italy).

*July 27: Chat mind, body, and spirit with Jackie Joyner-Kersee (athletics, USA), push through boundaries and level up in life with Meb Keflezighi (marathon, USA), get vulnerable to unlock greatness with Kerri Walsh Jennings (beach volleyball, USA), and Zumba beachside in paradise with Tom Hintnaus (athletics, Brazil).

* July 28: Get a glimpse into quarantine training with two-time grand slam winning Naomi Osaka (tennis, Japan), run, breathe and connect with world record sprinter Zhenye XIE (athletics, China), learn a grand slam inspired training regime with Sania Mirza (tennis, India), and master perseverance with Pita Taufatofua (Taekwondo and cross country skiing, Tonga).

* July 29: Fall in love with sneaker culture with Rui Hachimura (basketball, Japan), get up close and personal at home with Jordy Smith (surfing, South Africa), and see beyond the boundaries of vision with blind champion Lex Gillette (athletics, USA)”.

The Olympic Games bring the whole world together and whilst we will all have to wait one more year to celebrate in Tokyo, the Olympic flame continues to be the light at the end of the dark tunnel humankind is currently going through. It demonstrates that we are stronger together. This festival is a great platform to unite and inspire the world in the spirit of friendship and solidarity this summer. The IOC puts the athletes at the heart of the Olympic Movement and supports them at every stage of their journey. We are delighted to collaborate with Airbnb to provide innovative economic empowerment opportunities for Olympic and Paralympic athletes around the world,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

“Paralympians and Para athletes are masters of innovation and finding creative solutions to daily challenges they face,” said IPC President Andrew Parsons. “The summer festival of Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences celebrates this tenacity and gives Para athletes a platform to share their stories to empower others, while also offering a new earning opportunity especially needed during these difficult times.”

While the festival will give fans unprecedented global access to connect with athletes from over 20 countries and regions all from the comfort of their homes, numerous Online Experiences in the lineup will also meaningfully promote.

Economic opportunities for athletes: As Online Experiences launched as a way for hosts to earn money during the global pandemic, Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences is a new platform to provide direct earning opportunities for athletes, underlining the efforts of Airbnb, the IOC, and the IPC to support athletes and to put them at the heart of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.

Resilience through adversity: Numerous athlete hosts will inspire perseverance through their Online Experiences, like Yusra Mardini, the Syrian swimmer who became a member of the first-ever IOC Refugee Olympic Team in 2016 and whose story became known for saving 20 lives with her sister, including their own lives, during a treacherous journey from Syria to find safety in Europe, who will host a one-off workshop on resilience. Another inspiring option is co-hosted by Tegla Loroupe, Chef de Mission for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, and Rio 2016 Olympian, IOC Refugee Olympic Team hopeful for Tokyo 2020 James Chiengjiek Nyang, as they will welcome guests will transport guests virtually to the Tegla Loroupe Training Centre in Kenya. Tegla has been the guide and mentor to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.

The world-class hospitality of Japan: In addition to the Olympian and Paralympian Online Experiences and as a way to celebrate Tokyo 2020, local hosts in Japan will offer guests a way to travel and explore the cultures and traditions of the country from their living rooms. Through support from Shibuya City Tourism Association, local hosts will lead a package of unique online activities like Become a Ramen Expert and A Tour of Historic Shibuya. Other ways to virtually transport to Japan will include Sake Secrets from Japan’s Oldest Brewery and Explore Kyoto Where Unique Old Gods Live. Religion / Re: Evangelist Morris Cerullo's Last Moments With Oyedepo, Chris Oyakhilome, Enenche by MELLIS(m): 1:11pm On Jul 12, 2020
American Pentecostal Tele-Evangelist, Dr. Morris Cerullo is dead. He died on Saturday, July 11, 2020, at the age of 88.
Dr. Cerullo was born in Passaic, New Jersey on October 2, 1931, to a Russo-Jewish/Italian family. He was the host of Victory Today, a daily television program, and he has published more than 80 books.
Dr. Morris Cerullo has traveled broadly around the world for ministry, and he is a father to many popular ministers, today. He has personally trained over 5 million Christian leaders across the world who are called Nationals to propagate the gospel in their countries.
When he was young, he lost his parents died to an automobile accident.
He was bred in various orphanages, the last one was an Orthodox Jewish orphanage in nearby Clifton, New Jersey.
At the age of 14, he became a Christian through the direction of a nurse in an orphanage in Clifton, New Jersey.
Not long after his conversion, Jewish orphanage directors restrained him from practicing certain matters of his new faith, so he ran away from the orphanage. Morris started preaching the gospel at the age of 16, after seeing a vision from God, in which he saw people agonizing tortures in Hell.
He went to divinity school in New York state and graduated in 1953, and started ministering with the cooperation of his then soon-to-be bride Theresa. He got ordained in the early 1950s in the Assemblies of God.
Dr. Morris Cerullo has gone to be with the Lord, but his work lives. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Sports / Victor Osimehin To Leave Lille This Summer by MELLIS(m): 10:49am On Jun 16, 2020
Nigeria international, Victor Osimehin is on the verge of leaving Stade Pierre Mauroy this summer with interest from top teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Napoli. The 21 years old Nigerian who came to Lille last July has made a great impact within the short term spent with 18 goals plus six assists.

LOSC Lille Coach, Galtier had made a hint on his imminent departure and also some other players while speaking to Canal plus.

“The day I reason that we recruit players to train them for other clubs, it will not last more than 10-15 minutes with my president and Luis saying” it’s time to stop ”. People stay focused on “they buy for X, they sell for Y. The player arrives, he stays 18 months or 12 months and then he leaves” but there is not a French club that may not sell except Paris Saint-Germain.

“Everyone else is forced to sell and everyone else is like us. But they don’t assume it. I am in this project there, with young players who come from all walks of life and I find that it is very fulfilling,” said Galtier.

He further stated ” I expect Gabriel, Osimhen or even Ikoné to leave? Yes, I integrated them into the team. I don’t want them to leave, but they will leave. I can’t veto a player’s departure, this is the project,”.

Lille have placed a price tag of £72m (€80m) on the 21-year-old.

Science/Technology / The Wallpaper Behind Many Phone Crashes by MELLIS(m): 11:25am On Jun 14, 2020
In September 2019, a San Diego base photographer with the name ‘Gaurav Agarwal’ uploaded an image on Flickr which broke many phones and causing loss of photos and other data.

The story of the phone crashing wallpaper, however, went wild making headlines recently for crashing some Android phones as
many Android devices don’t support the format of the said image.

The photographer behind the photo has however apologised in a report credited to Gadget 360. He said:

“I felt sympathetic to people who may have lost their data and photographs due to the crash,” – Gaurav Agrawal

The San Diego-based photographer, Agrawal uploaded the photograph not knowing it will go viral and will crash a large number of smartphone across the world. Android devices from Google and Samsung were amongst the most impacted by the photograph that was used as a wallpaper by many users. The wallpaper doesn’t impact on iPhones.

“It was alarming to say the least,” Agrawal said in his conversation.

Agrawal acquired the said image using a Nikon DSLR camera and uploaded on his Flickr profile on September 16, 2019. However, he made use of Adobe Lightroom to convert image format to ProPhotoRGB before sharing online. The problem being ProPhotoRGB isn’t supported by many Android devices.

The image impressed Flickr users initially attracting comments until last month when a Twitter user alerted people to not use the image as wallpaper that it may cause crashes. Those that applied the photograph as wallpaper have however reported crashes.

Nairaland / General / Court Judgment On Status Of Lokoja And Ajaokuta: Yoruba World Congress' Pronounc by MELLIS(m): 6:36pm On Jun 06, 2020
A purported Court Judgment declaring Lokoja and Ajaokuta as part of the Igala Kingdom. refers.. The Yoruba World Congress, the umbrella body of Yoruba Groups world wide, would like to state as follows:

While we have great admiration for the Igala Kingdom, and HRM, the Attah Igala and that institution, we declare the claims in the judgement as a distortion of very clear history, especially as regards to Lokoja, which is a great ancestral domain of the Oworo People of Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The People of Oworo have already made that very clear. Until the creation of Kogi State when the Igala trooped to Kogi enmasse from Benue State how many Igala lived in Lokoja or Ajaokuta for the previous 100 years?

What Igala cultural artefacts did Oworo and Ajaokuta People find? From which Igala ancestors did they beg for land before they dwelt there?

When does coming to trade at an existing market confer ownership of the market to the trader?

The Igala as a People made their marks in history during the Kwararafa era, and also their impact in some part of Eastern Nigeria.are very clear but the Igala affiliation with the western side of the Niger River did not happen until modern times.

The recent "Judgment" appropriating Lokoja and Ajaokuta to that Kingdom is a "strange fire on the altar' and therefore unacceptable to the Yoruba Nation of which the Oworo People are an integral part.

For far too long, we, the Yoruba in the South West have neglected our brothers and sisters, the Okun in Kogi State and the Ilorin, Igbomina, Ibolo and the Jebba axis of Kwara State who were excised through a conspiracy between the British colonial power and the Fulani Emirates of the core North. That has happened partly because of the distortion caused by the said British, in collaboration with the Fulani Jihadists invaders.

In light of this jugdement, it is incumbent on YWC to officially bring in the Yoruba Traditional Leaders led by His Imperial Majesty, The Ooni of Ife and His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, The Alafin of Oyo. We will not stop at that, we shall also deploy the best legal luminaries of the Yoruba extraction to the struggle to rescue our people from this expansionist ploy.

Now is the right time to signal the determination of the Yoruba to begin a process of writing the true history of the Nigerian Ethnic Nationalities, as opposed the pseudo-colonislist and jihadist interpretation as handed over to us by the British, who were driven by commercial/economic goals.

In order to protect their economic interests, the British imposed a hegemonist arrangement called the Almalgamation Treaty of 1914. It is instructive to note that this treaty was due for renewal in 2014.

We, the Yoruba Nation stand firm on the belief that the various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria reserve the right to self determination to agree to arrangements that suit their national aspirations.

The judgement of the High Court that Lokoja and Ajaokuta in Kogi State are part of the Igala Kingdom against all genuine historical facts, highlights the urgent need for discussions by all parts of Nigeria to agree on where they want to be instead of what is imposed on them.

This Statement serves notice that the Yoruba Nation will strenuously stand to defend her People who dwell on YORUBA LAND from Oworo in Kogi State eastwards to Jebba and Baruba all the way to the Benin Republic border and southwest to the Atlantic Ocean. We urge all the Oworo People to stay calm but to resolutely defend their God given land against this attempted piracy

Nairaland / General / 5G Infodemic And Covid-19 Pandemic by MELLIS(m): 1:42pm On Apr 04, 2020
Panic continues to increase with the wide spread conspiracy that 5G technology causes Corona virus with people in China and other places seen burning and destroying 5G towers. This has raised a spark online with many people calling for the halt of the Fifth Generation Technology usage across the UK attracting over 110 000 signatures online consisting of celebrities who shared it to millions of followers.

One of the petitions by Delroy Chin opined that emmitted radiations from 5G masts deplete oxygen from the atmosphere and causes malfunctioning of the human body. "Our bodies are 85 per cent water and the shortwave radiation increases the breakdown in our natural biology causing cancers and other serious health conditions," according to his statement. "Symptoms of 5G exposure include respiratory problems, flu-like symptoms (temperature rises, fever, headaches), pneumonia. Very much like the effects of Corona virus".

In spite of the 5G conspiracy, many scientists have dismissed fears concerning 5G technology based on the fact that 5G just like 4G and 3G technologies, makes use of electromagneticwave which emits non-ionising radiations.

The World Health Organization (WHO), however also pushes against the conspiracy in a statement on it's website reiterating that many studies have been done in past two decades to examine if the use of mobile phone poses any health risk to man with the results proving that the use of mobile phone has no health risk associated.

The World Health Organization (WHO) negating the conspiracy against 5G technology described the disinformation as an "infodemic".
To fight this 5G infodemic, the United Nations has made a move by launching an online tool to provide certified information regularly about the Covid-19 pandemic to people.

Since December 31, 2019 till date, 1 082 054 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, including 58142 deaths according to European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
