SportsCan Nigeria Still Qualify For FIFA 2026 World Cup? -only If These by MELLIS(op):
Currently Nigeria finds itself in the most difficult situation qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the moment, the Super Eagles have less control over their chances of qualifying even if they win their remaining two matches so their destinies is no longer only in their own hands. Here’s a breakdown of the current situation for Nigeria in the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers (Group C), and what Nigeria needs to do to qualify either directly or via the playoffs.

Current Standings & Format

Group C contains: South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Rwanda, Lesotho, Zimbabwe.

After 8 matches each, the table is:

1. South Africa – 17 points, +8 goal difference
2. Benin – 14 points, +4 GD
3. Nigeria – 11 points, +2 GD
4. Rwanda – 11 points (tied with Nigerians and Benin on points) but with inferior 0 GD

Qualifying format for CAF:

* The winner of each group (all 9 groups) qualifies automatically for World Cup 2026.
* The four best runners-up across all groups go into a CAF playoff round, and from that the winner(s) may proceed to the inter-confederation playoffs.

What Nigeria Needs to Do to Qualify

Because Nigeria are currently 6 points behind South Africa with only two matches remaining, the path is narrow. Here are the scenarios:

1. Direct Qualification (Win the Group)

To finish first in Group C and qualify directly, Nigeria must:

* Win both of their remaining matches:
- away vs Lesotho
- home vs Benin
- South Africa must lose both of their remaining matches. If South Africa picks up even one point, Nigeria cannot catch them for first place.
* Nigeria would also want to improve goal difference; even if they catch up points, a superior goal difference may be needed (or head-to-head / other tie-breakers).

So the combination required is extremely tight: Nigeria wins both + South Africa lose both + favourable goal difference outcomes.

2. Qualifying via Runners-Up / Playoff Route

If Nigeria can’t win the group, the next best route is as one of the top four group runners-up. For that, Nigeria would need:

- To finish second in Group C. To ensure second, Nigeria needs to maintain position ahead of Benin, Rwanda etc. Possibly by outscoring them in goal difference or by getting more points. Winning their last two matches will help in that.

- Secure enough points to also be among the four best runners-up across all CAF groups. Right now, Nigeria with 11 points is behind many runners-up in other groups.

- In best case, if they get two wins, Nigeria would end on 17 points. But even 17 might be marginal depending on what other groups’ runners-up finish with.

Summary of Possible Scenarios

* Best case
- Win vs Lesotho & Win vs Benin
- South Lose both of their remaining matches
- Nigeria finishes 1st → Direct qualification

* Alternate good
- Win both remaining matches
- South Africa loses the remaining 2 matches + Nigeria’s having better goal difference + other match outcomes from Benin helping.
- FIFA deduct 3 point from South Africa for offence + Nigeria win the remaining two matches + South Africa lose one of their remaining matches + Better goal difference for Nigeria
- Possibly still 1st if goal-difference / head-to-head favours Nigeria, but very unlikely.

* Playoff route
- Win both, or win one and draw one (if others slip)
- South Africa wins or draws at least one (so they stay ahead)
- Nigeria finishes 2nd, then must ensure to be among the 4 best runners-up to proceed to CAF playoffs → then maybe inter-confederation playoff depending on format. However, that's the most difficult thing because 7 of the second best teams in other groups are already having between 15 and 19 point, it's completely difficult for any of them not to win a match among their two remaining matches which will put them above the maximum possible point Nigeria can still gather.

Nairaland GeneralAmazon Astro For Business Security Robots Discontinued by MELLIS(op): 6:33pm On Jul 04, 2024
Just seven months after the device’s original debut, Amazon has decided to retire its Astro for Business security robot. This robotic security solution, which was created for small and medium-sized organizations, is being discontinued as the company returns its attention to the consumer market.

Read full story here https://macadano.com/amazon-discontinues-astro-for-business-robot-after-7-months/

The news, which was sent out on Wednesday to staff members and consumers via email, emphasized Amazon’s plan to focus on its home version of Astro. Launched in 2021, this residential version comes with a luggage compartment that can hold 4.4 pounds and capabilities including message delivery, pet recognition, and home security.

In a prepared statement, an Amazon representative provided further details on this tactical change: “We are totally dedicated to our objective of bringing top-notch consumer robotics products into the house. We have decided to discontinue support for Astro for Business in order to expedite our development and further research into making Astro the greatest in-home robot. We’re looking forward to releasing more information in the future and are thrilled about the in-home experiences we’re creating for Astro.

Astro for Business robots will no longer operate as a result of the cessation after September 25. Customers are encouraged by Amazon to dispose of these gadgets through its recycling program; the business will pay for the delivery.

Although the amount of business customers impacted by this decision has not been published by Amazon, the company’s decision to stop making new investments in the Astro for Business product line appears to have been driven by the lack of sufficient demand.

The Astro for Business robots were $2,350 and included three subscription levels. Route programming was one of the features of the main plan, “Astro Secure,” which cost $60 a month. There were also two optional memberships that offered more features: one that cost $20 a month gave users access to Ring alarms and motion detectors, while another that cost $99 a month included monitoring services and human agent help.

Businesses will not be billed for the “Astro Secure” subscription going forward. In addition, Amazon has given a $300 credit for impacted customers in an effort to encourage the use of substitute security measures in their businesses. Customers will also be reimbursed for any pre-paid Astro Secure fees that are not used.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Faces Uphill Battle In Qualifying For 2026 World Cup by MELLIS(op):
In a series of recent matches, Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has shown signs of struggle, raising concerns about the country’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The team’s last two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe have left fans questioning the players’ performance, particularly the lackluster goalkeeping and the coach’s ability to guide the team to success.

The Super Eagles’ typically formidable lineup faced unexpected challenges in the matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, resulting in unanticipated draws that have jeopardized Nigeria’s standing in the World Cup qualifiers. Fans and analysts alike have expressed disappointment in the players’ performance, citing a lack of cohesion and intensity on the field.

Criticism has been particularly directed at the goalkeeper, whose seemingly lackluster goalkeeping during crucial moments has raised eyebrows. Fans had grown accustomed to a certain level of skill and reliability in the goalkeeping position, but recent performances have left many questioning whether changes are needed to bolster the team’s defensive capabilities.

Moreover, the spotlight is now firmly on the coach, with questions arising about the technicality and strategic decisions employed during these critical matches. The ability to secure victories in key qualifiers is essential for a team eyeing a spot in the prestigious 2026 World Cup, and doubts surrounding the coach’s capability to lead the Super Eagles to success are gaining traction.

As Nigeria navigates the remaining qualifiers on the road to the 2026 World Cup, fans are hopeful that the team can overcome these recent challenges. The pressure is mounting for both players and the coaching staff to address the identified shortcomings and regain the confidence of supporters who are eager to see the Super Eagles.....

Nairaland GeneralKenyan Pastor Who Entered Lion’s Den, Did Something Unbelievable by MELLIS(op):
A Member of Parliament from Kenya, Ronald Karauri, has decided to reward a pastor known as ‘Daniel’ who recently recreated a scene from the Bible by entering a lion’s den. Karauri has offered to take the pastor on an all-expenses-paid trip to Masai Mara National Reserve to observe lions in their natural habitat. The pastor gained widespread attention after a video of him interacting with three lions in a seemingly fearless manner went viral on social media.

Despite provoking the lions, they remained surprisingly calm, and at one point, he even placed his hands in a lion’s mouth. Before locking himself in the den, the pastor invited local church members to witness his actions. It remains unclear whether the pastor has accepted the MP’s generous offer. However, some conservation activists warn that such stunts could face legal obstacles, as harming wildlife, even seemingly docile lions, can lead to severe legal consequences due to the unpredictable...

Nairaland GeneralWhy Nigeria Should Harness Naira Redesign To Switch To Digital Payment. by MELLIS(op):
Nigeria is currently undergoing a currency redesign policy aimed at upgrading the security features of banknotes. However, this presents an opportunity for the government and financial institutions to accelerate the adoption of digital payment methods and switch to a cashless economy.

The concept of a cashless economy has been gaining attention in recent years due to its potential to reduce the cost of managing physical cash, curb corruption, and increase financial inclusion. A cashless economy refers to a situation where financial transactions are conducted using digital payment methods, such as mobile money, internet banking, and cards, without the use of physical cash.

One of the primary advantages of a cashless economy is increased transparency, as all transactions are recorded electronically, making it easier to detect and prevent fraudulent activities. Additionally, a cashless economy promotes financial inclusion by making it easier for people without access to traditional banking services to participate in the economy. Digital payment methods are more convenient and cost-effective, especially for small transactions, and can help reduce the cost of managing physical cash.

To harness the opportunity presented by the currency redesign policy, the government and financial institutions need to work together to create awareness and promote the adoption of digital payment methods. This could include measures such as reducing transaction fees, improving the reliability of digital payment systems, and educating the public on the benefits of going cashless.

One of the critical factors that hinder the adoption of digital payment methods in Nigeria is the low level of financial literacy among the populace. According to a survey conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018, only 40% of Nigerians were financially literate, indicating a significant gap in financial knowledge and awareness. The government and financial institutions need to invest in financial education programs that will empower Nigerians with the necessary skills and knowledge to embrace digital payment methods.

Another challenge to the adoption of digital payment methods in Nigeria is the lack of adequate digital infrastructure. Nigeria's digital infrastructure is still in its infancy, with limited internet penetration, poor network coverage, and low smartphone adoption rates. The government needs to invest in developing digital infrastructure that will support the growth of a cashless economy. This includes expanding network coverage, improving internet penetration, and encouraging the adoption of smartphones.

One of the most significant barriers to the adoption of digital payment methods in Nigeria is the low level of trust in financial institutions. Many Nigerians still prefer to use physical cash because they do not trust financial institutions with their money. This lack of trust is due to past experiences of fraud, corruption, and mismanagement by financial institutions. To overcome this challenge, financial institutions need to improve their transparency, accountability, and customer service. They need to demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding customers' funds and providing quality services.

The government can also play a role in promoting trust in financial institutions by implementing regulatory policies that protect consumers' rights and interests. This includes enforcing consumer protection laws, ensuring compliance with anti-fraud and anti-money laundering regulations, and promoting transparency and accountability in the financial sector.

The adoption of digital payment methods has the potential to transform Nigeria's economy by promoting financial inclusion, reducing corruption, and improving efficiency. However, it requires the collaboration of the government, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment that will support the growth of a cashless economy.

In conclusion, the current currency redesign policy presents an opportunity for Nigeria to accelerate the adoption of digital payment methods and switch to a cashless economy. To achieve this, the government and financial institutions need to work together to create awareness, invest in digital infrastructure, improve financial literacy, and promote trust in financial institutions. The benefits of a cashless economy are enormous, and Nigeria can reap the rewards by embracing this transformative concept.

Following a contentious build-up, Fifa wrote to each of the 32 World Cup teams instructing them to “now focus on the game.”

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, some players have prepared civil protests.

Harry Kane of England and nine other captains of European countries will don armbands with the slogan “One Love.”

Also, despite France being the defending champions, Paris and other French cities are refusing to show matches in public spaces.

Furthermore, the Australian team has made a film calling on Qatar to repeal its restrictions on same-sex unions.

Meanwhile, Hummel, the company that makes Denmark’s uniforms, has stated that it “does not intend to be visible” in a competition that “has cost thousands of lives” and that Denmark will wear “toned-down” shirts to oppose Qatar.

Chief Innocent Chukwuma, the chairman of Innoson told journalists in Nnewi that "I am doing city buses for NNPC. The one that will use gas. 100 units. I am producing it from start to finish. It will be purely gas. But I made it in such a way that in case there is scarcity of gas, it will use diesel. So, it can change as an alternative."

Chief Innocent Chukwuma also revealed that Innoson can produce electric cars also with gas as alternative fuel. He said he is ready to begin manufacturing electric cars but the country is not ready. According to him, studies have been made and he has trained people who will produce electric vehicles once Nigeria is ready.

Meanwhile, the government has made its transition plan to gas known. This will initially see the conversion a million vehicles running on petrol converted to run on gas.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) can be used in vehicles. It's a natural gas under pressure that remains clear, odourless and noncorrosive. This can be used as an alternative fuel to petrol and diesel.
