REFERENCE POINTS: THE ORIGIN.

Remember when you first had to learn about cartesian co-ordinates, plotting graphs? There was always this reference to the centre O, the origin, from where you could trace a point, and if you do get lost, you can always go back to the origin to start over.

If there was no origin, there would be too much confusion, and infact, there would be no concept of position. Even without a centre O, say like in relative positioning, there is still an origin that is represented by a reference point. A is in front of B, C is beside D, and so on. We always have to describe one thing by another, relative to another, a reference point by which we measure something else.

REFERENCE POINTS: RANKINGS.

Why do we have rankings all over the place? UniRank, Webometrics, and all the others, rank universities worldwide each year. Why is that? Because of this sense of positioning, without which we all would be disoriented. It is inherent. How else would we be able to decide which schools fared better than the others. All forms of ranking, positioning, grading, is so we can have a reference point, for...

ROOTS.

All trees have roots, whether tap roots or fibrous roots or just rhizoids. They have something to connect to a source and to tap with. A seed is planted, it ‘takes root’, and with it, gets what it needs to grow and survive. Can we liken human thoughts to trees then, in the sense of needing a root? Not needing a root, actually, as it’s not a matter of ‘need’, but of ‘what is’.

Man is called Homo sapien - wise, intelligent, thinking man. It’s this ability to think intelligently that has set us far above all other species. Man is inherently a creature of thoughts, whether evaluating a mathematical problem, predicting the next scene in a movie or the trend of the stock market, wondering what to gift a friend for Christmas or feed the bird for dinner.

Thoughts have to be coming from somewhere, tethered to something, else how would we differentiate...

JUMBLED UP.

As stated in an earlier part of the series, the mind feeds off the senses, and very quickly can get overloaded. It is bombarded with about a million incoming information, and an equivalent number going in the opposite direction, with millions more running around on the inside. Couple this with higher levels of reasoning, beyond reflexes that must be handled regardless of how much RAM is available, and the bother of weighing and deciding, modified by emotions, which themselves need modification. So you get the idea of the wavy lines running around in the 'mind' of the Thinking Figure.

Thought, thinking, reasoning, logic……are they same or they’re just linked? Where is the link? If different, what makes them, how are they limited individually, with strengths and weaknesses? If the same, what’s the common limitation?

Maybe that’s all just all a matter of language…..which is another problem. What if we could express every thing ever we thought? How many times have you been stumped, lacking words to express an idea?

Lateral Thinking How can thinking be Lateral? Well, it simply means ‘Think Outside the Box.’

Okay, that’s annoying, having a cliche thrown in your face like that. This phrase is the unfortunately overused, misused, abused, and all the ‘wrong-used’ sibling of a family of phrases conveying the idea of creative thinking. ‘Lateral Thinking’ and Thinking Outside the Box are synonymous. Think Laterally is seeking methods not traditional(Vertical Thinking) to achieve a task. It goes beyond the conventional, and moves on to the more dynamic and innovative.

Hello here. I play the Harmonica but it's almost always useless if playing in a group 'cos I'm restricted to key C and that's frustrating.
I've checked around and online stores with no sign of a chromatic harmonica around.

Sometimes people don't understand things because it's way over their head.
