The Houston POE Experience.... Arrival Houston 19:30 (Emirates). There was no cue as we were the only flight that arrived at that time. My Turn; approached the counter with a smile (As courtesy demands) Me: Good day (Handing over our passports) CBP: Good day (stretching his hands reaching out for our passports) CBP: looking through our passports says "why are u here" Me: For childbirth. CBP: Scans my passport first, then his eye catches on a certain information on the computer screen and he seriously reads through it for about 10sec with his eye brows raised and then suddenly says "Ok place ur four right / left fingers on the scanner" (At this point, I knew it was over, I became more relaxed) CBP: How long are u here for. Me: Well, am here for two weeks just to ensure the wife is properlly settled and for our first Dr. appointment, then I'll leave to Nigeria for work to come back after two weeks to witness the delivery. CBP: Turns to DW, "How about you?" DW: 10 weeks. CBP: says to my wife "place your right / left four fingers on the scanner please" CBP: Picks up his stamp and preparing to stamp our passport says with a very calm voice "why did you choose the US?, why not UK, Europe, Germany etc." (At this point, he had started stamping 6 months on our passports while we were giving answers) Me: We had thought deeply about the best life options we could give to our child in terms of future opportunities and having done my research, the US was my best option. (Honestly we didn't bother using all the "better health care service" excuse / stories and all cuz I knew from the depth of my heart, the reason I was having my child in the US was for him to be a US citizen) DW(added): He studied in the Uk so its enabled us to do our comparison properly on which country has better opportunities for our child. CBP: With a smile says "I know that already......you were there for 4 years right?" Me: Yes. (With great surprise on my face) CBP: still holding the stamped passports says "how do u intend to cover the cost?" Me: it will be "Self Pay". Presently all hospital bills have been paid in full prior to arrival and deposit made for doctor's appointment. CBP: How much? Me: 500 usd CBP: 500 dollars? (with a surprise on his face) says "daz too little" DW(cuts in): Datz actually just an initial deposit, his total cost is $3500 and we have the balance with us cash. CBP: Oh sorry I didn't get that. Ok so how much is your total budget? Me: $17,000 CBP: Turns to DW "just make sure u keep all receipts so as to avoid issues in future, these things are taken very seriously now" DW: Thank you, I will. CBP: is this address where you'll be staying? (Looking at the customs declaration form), did you have to pay for it? Me: Yes we have paid for it in full as well. CBP: I see that also. You paid last week. (At this point he wrote B2 on our passports) Me: Yes I did. (With another surprise on my face) CBP: Finally hands over the passports " Welcome and Enjoy your stay" Having heard all the stories about Houston, we insisted that our case will be different....I was however well prepared and told myself I will give honest answers and be truthful about any questions asked.(I'm usually more confident and in control of a conversation when saying the truth) I literally set my watch when I approached the counter. It took 48secs from the time he collected our passports to when he stamped. Other discussions took about another 40secs extra. Total time spent at POE was 1min and 28secs. Everything was just so fast.....Never Travelled to the US before. Visa was strictly on medical. Passed through Agric without any baggage search even if we declared we had food Back to Nigeria now and DW still chilling in Houston awaiting arrival of the LO. Will join them later next month. My advise is to be well prepared, say the truth, and never forget to involve GOD. Doesn't matter what POE. You'll b successful..... 47 Likes |
