Celebrities / Ooni Of Ife Is My Father, Not Lover –ara by metronaijadotng: 8:15am On Jan 14, 2018
There have been reports that popular singer and drummer, Aralola Apake, popularly known as Ara, is in a relationship with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and that she may be his next queen. However, in a chat with Sunday Scoop, Ara rubbished the stories.

She said, “There is no iota of truth to such reports, please disregard them. The Ooni is like a father to me, and he takes me as his daughter. There is no love affair between us at all. The monarch is a very great lover of our culture, and it is obvious that he has done a lot to support and promote the Yoruba culture. I am also a cultural ambassador and the Ooni has lent his support to our cause. I believe that there are a lot of potential in this country that can be tapped. If we harness the tourism potential of Nigeria, it would fetch the country more money than oil and gas. There are a lot of beautiful sites across the country that foreigners would love to visit, and with my foundation, I have decided to showcase the country’s beauty through movies and other forms of entertainment.”

The singer added that she is in a relationship at the moment. “I am in a relationship at the moment, and my man makes me happy all the time. He has all the qualities that I want in a man, such as being God fearing, confident and caring. Even as I am talking to you now, you would notice that the tone of my voice has changed. That should tell you how happy he makes me, even in his absence,” she said.

Health / Over 20,200 Babies Born In Nigeria On New Year Day- UNICEF by metronaijadotng: 9:38am On Jan 02, 2018
Nigeria would have approximately 20,210 babies born into the country on the New Year’s day.

This represents the third largest population of newborns in the world on Jan. 1, 2018, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said.

UNICEF also said nearly 386,000 babies would be born worldwide on New Year’s Day, representing some 90 per cent in less developed regions.

The agency reported that Kiribati’s Christmas Island in the Pacific would most likely welcome 2018’s first baby while the U.S., its last.

Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in nine countries, according to UNICEF.

These are: India, 69,070; China, 44,760; Nigeria, 20,210; Pakistan, 14,910; Indonesia, 13,370; United States, 11,280; Democratic Republic of Congo, 9,400; Ethiopia, 9,020; and Bangladesh, 8,370.

While many babies would survive, some would not make it past their first day, UNICEF said.

Stefan Peterson, UNICEF’s Chief of Health, said on Monday that the agency was challenging nations around the world to make sure more newborns survive their first days of life.

“This New Year, UNICEF’s resolution is to help give every child more than an hour, more than a day, more than a month – more than survival,” Peterson said.

In 2016, an estimated 2,600 children died within the first 24 hours every day of the year, according to the UN agency.

UNICEF said that for almost two million newborns, their first week was also their last.

In all, 2.6 million children died before the end of their first month, the global children’s agency disclosed.

UNICEF said more than 80 per cent of the children died from preventable and treatable causes such as premature birth, complications during delivery, and infections like sepsis and pneumonia.

Peterson stressed: “We call on governments and partners to join the fight to save millions of children’s lives by providing proven, low-cost solutions.”

Over the past two decades, the world has seen unprecedented progress in child survival, halving the number of children worldwide who die before their fifth birthday to 5.6 million in 2016.

But in spite of these advances, there has been slower progress for newborns, UNICEF noted adding, babies dying in the first month account for 46 per cent of all deaths among children under five.

In February 2018, UNICEF would launch ‘Every Child Alive,’ a global campaign to demand and deliver affordable, quality health care solutions for every mother and newborn.

These include a steady supply of clean water and electricity at health facilities, the presence of a skilled health attendant during birth, disinfecting the umbilical cord, breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, and skin-to-skin contact between the mother and child.

“We are now entering the era when all the world’s newborns should have the opportunity to see the 22nd century,” Peterson added.

Unfortunately, nearly half of the children born this year likely will not, the UNICEF official regretted.

“A child born in Sweden in January 2018 is most likely to live to 2100, while a child from Somalia would be unlikely to live beyond 2075,” he lamented.

Crime / Mother Sent To Prison For ‘killing’ Son With Hot Water by metronaijadotng: 6:26pm On Dec 29, 2017
An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ court on Friday remanded Mary Eze, in Ikoyi prison for allegedly pouring hot water on her seven-year-old son for misplacing N200 which led to his death.

The accused,40, a petty trader appeared before Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, on a charge for murder, but her plea was not taken by the court.

The Investigating Police Officer, (IPO) Insp. Chris Akpanomo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 8, at No. 670, Ikorodu Road, Owode Elede in Ikorodu.

He alleged that the accused had sent the deceased with the last N200 she had, to buy food for her, but he returned to tell her that he had misplaced the money.

According to Akpanomo, out of annoyance she poured hot water on him, locked him in the house and went about her daily routine.

He added that it was his persistent shouts that attracted neighbours, who rushed him to the hospital where he later died.

The offence contravened section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates a death sentence for convicts.

The Chief Magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending the outcome of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP’s).

She, however, adjourned the case until Jan. 24, 2018 for legal advice.

“As a result of diligent investigation by the SARS, all the trucks and two other cars were recovered and the criminal receiver also arrested.”

Crime / Man Steals N104,000 Phones With Rope In Lagos by metronaijadotng: 1:59pm On Dec 28, 2017
After pleading guilty to stealing two phones valued at N104,000, a 25-year-old unemployed man, Titi Seun, was on Thursday remanded in prison on the orders of an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

According to a ruling by the Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, the accused, whose residential address is unknown, is to remain behind bars in Kirikiri Prisons pending sentence at the next date of adjournment.

Prosecutor Clement Okuoimose had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 6 at Dopemu, Agege, Lagos.

He said the accused stole two phones valued at N104,000 property of Mr Samuel Ikenna., using a rope.

“The accused stole the complainant’s Samsung J7 valued at N96,000 and an itel phone worth N8,000 totalling N104,000.”

Okuoimose said the accused stole the complainant’s phones through the window.

“The complainant woke up from sleep and discovered that his two phones which he was charging had disappeared.

“He saw a long rope with nail which the accused used to remove the phones from the charger.

“The complainant called the phones several times but the accused refused to pick and he called one of the phones several days later and a lady picked it and told him that the owner was not around.

“The complainant told the lady to give him her own number in case he calls the owner’s number and it is not going through he can call her and that he has an important message for the owner of the phone,” he said.

“The lady gave the complainant her number and that led to the arrest of the accused.”

However, the accused who later confessed to the crime, attributed it to the handiwork of the devil as he pleaded for mercy.

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes three years jail term as penalty.

The magistrate has fixed Jan. 10 for sentence.

Two Nigerian college students Mustafa Azmir and Jude Nnamdi Achonye were on Wednesday December 20, handed the death sentence by a High Court in Shah Alam for trafficking 3.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine.

Shah Alam High Court judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against the accused, Azmir, 28, and Achonye, 30.

According to the criminal charge brought against them, Azmir and Achonye were accused of trafficking the drugs at an apartment in Petaling Jaya at 3.30pm on Sept 2, 2014 which is an offense under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The facts of the case stated that the accused, who studied at a private college in Kuala Lumpur, were arrested by police when they accepted several boxes containing the drug which was delivered by a courier company at the apartment.

Abdul Halim, in his ruling, said the court had studied testimonies from 13 prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses, alongside 73 exhibits tendered during the trial.

"The defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of this case and presented no testimony that thoroughly refutes the prosecution," he said.

"Besides that, there were also discrepancies in testimonies of the accused and their defence only amounted to denial without concrete evidence," he said.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Rehan Mohd Aris appeared for the prosecution, while the accused were represented by lawyer Leonard Anselm Gomes.
