Serena Williams made a ruthless start in her quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over unseeded German Tatjana Maria in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The seven-time Australian Open champion was pregnant when she won the last of her 23rd Grand Slam titles at Melbourne Park.

She, however, showed her brutal power and athleticism in the match between the two mothers at Rod Laver Arena.

The 37-year-old Williams, playing her first Grand Slam since her rant against the umpire at last year’s U.S. Open final, lost only 24 points against Maria.

Williams finished the match in just 49 minutes on her second match point when Maria sent a backhand wide.

The American is expected to play with the winner of the match between Peng Shuai and Eugenie Bouchard.


Meanwhile, Williams on Tuesday said she was excited to be back in action with a strong start in Melbourne after winning her last grand slam title at the Australian Open in 2017.

The 37-year-old American holds the most Open Era singles titles, but is looking to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

“I have so many good memories of the last time I was here,” said Williams in her post-match comment.

“It was literally the best win of my career, so it’s just good to get back. I’m glad that I was able to come out and do what I needed to do.


“The last time I was here I was pregnant and playing at the same time, so it’s kind of weird walking back on by myself this time.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Williams, who also often likes to make strong fashion statements with her eye-catching outfits appeared in a sporty turquoise Nike romper with white and black stripes.

It was a departure from the all-black “tutu” uniform designed by Virgil Abloh that she wore at the 2018 US Open finals.

According to a statement from Nike, which also sponsors Australian Nick Kyrgios, the Australian Open collection “takes inspiration from early Nike Tennis DNA… This look was made iconic by Andre Agassi in the ’90s”.

Up next for the seven-time Australian Open champion will likely be a deceptively difficult opponent when she takes on either former World No.5 Eugenie Bouchard or former World No.14 Peng Shuai.

Bouchard reached the semifinals in Melbourne back in 2014, and has shown signs of a resurgence since hiring coach Michael Joyce, reaching the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland to start the season.

Australian great Margaret Court has predicted nerves could undermine Serena Williams' bid to match her record 24 singles majors at Melbourne Park, clearing the way for an outsider to snatch the title.


She disputed the bookies' assessment that Serena is red-hot favourite to lift the Australian Open trophy for an eighth time, taking her overall Grand Slam tally to 24 and equalling Court's mark.



"I think it's possible for Serena to equal me, if anybody's gonna do it, it's Serena, but I don't think there's a clear-cut favourite," Court told Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper Sunday.

"I think it's a pretty open tournament and I think an outsider can win it."

Williams, 37, has won 23 singles Grand Slams since 1999 -- seven Australian Opens, three French Opens, seven Wimbledons and six US Opens.

Court, now 76, won 24 singles Grand Slams from 1960-73 -- 11 Australian Opens, five French Opens, three Wimbledons and five US Opens.

However, 13 of Court's titles came before 1968, when the women's game entered the Open era and became fully professional.

For that reason many pundits, including 18-time Slam champion Chris Evert, believe Williams is already the greatest of all time.

Another win at Melbourne Park would settle the argument once and for all, but Court said the American no longer had the fearlessness of youth on her side.

"When you're young, you tend not to think about it too much," she said. "I won my first Australian championship when I was 17 and I had no nerves. As I went along... it became harder."

Williams has been one shy of Court's record since winning the 2017 Australian Open, when she was eight weeks pregnant.

She has spoken in the past about the mental hurdles she faced before reaching Steffi Graf's Open-era milestone of 22 majors at Wimbledon in 2016.

Her extraordinary success rate in Grand Slam finals has slowed in recent years.

Between 1999 and 2015 she reached 25 Slam deciders and lost only four, but since then her record stands at only two wins in six finals.

Critics say Court not only won the bulk of her titles in the amateur era, but her record was bolstered by 11 Australian crowns at a time when the journey Down Under involved an arduous boat trip that many top players declined to make.

Other detractors point out that some of the Slams she won involved only 32 competitors, rather than the 128-player draws Williams has faced throughout her career.

However, Court bristles when her own record is dismissed as largely irrelevant in the world of modern tennis and points out she won 11 titles in the Open era.

"It's not easy to win Grand Slams, it's probably easier today than when we were playing," she told the BBC last year.

"We had wooden rackets, we had to travel 10 months of the year, we played every week, we couldn't take family with us, we couldn't take any masseurs, we didn't know any of that, we played with injuries."

Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign Alvaro Morata on loan, Goal understands.

The Chelsea forward has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks as his struggles have caused the Blues to look at going in a different direction.

Sevilla have been seen as the favourites to secure his services, but negotiations over a loan deal with a permanent transfer clause have yet to be fully agreed upon, although the club is prepared to pay the entirety of Morata's £140,000-a-week wages to bring him to Andalusia

The club's director of football Joaquin Caparros recently stated that he believes the forward wants to join Sevilla, but admits a deal with Chelsea would prove "very, very complicated".

Now, the Spanish forward's agents are also in talks with Atletico Madrid over a temporary switch.

Over the next 48 hours, Morata's people will have a meeting with Atletico over a potential loan switch to the club. The Madrid native was previously in the club's academy from 2005-07 before switching to Getafe and, ultimately, Real Madrid.

Goal understands that Morata would be happy to return to Madrid, where he would be surrounded by family and friends.

If he were to move to Atletico, he would join another former Chelsea star as part of the club's strike-force in the form of Diego Costa, who has scored four goals in 15 matches this season.

Antoine Griezmann is the club's leading scorer in the league with eight goals, although none of his team-mates have fired more than twice in La Liga.

Diego Simeone is a fan of Morata's, and sees the forward's ability to play with his back to goal as something that could be a major asset to Atleti's attack.

Costa's injury issues also add to the club's need for forward depth, even if it is just through to the summer window.

Morata has scored five goals in 16 Premier League matches for Chelsea this season while adding two more in the Europa League.

The 26-year-old forward moved to Chelsea in July 2017 in a reported £60 million ($76m) deal, but has scored just 16 total Premier League goals for the club.

Morata missed Chelsea's recent 1-0 League Cup first leg defeat to Tottenham due to a hamstring injury.

World’s richest man and CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos has announced that he and his wife, MacKenzie, are divorcing.

54-year-old Bezos made the announcement on Twitter. He said he and his wife had been through a trial separation and have now decided to end their 25-year marriage.

According to Bezos, the divorce is amicable and they are grateful for the years they have been married to each other. He said they will remain a family and stay “cherished friends”.

He also adds: “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world. He and McKenzie own a total of 400,000 acres of property, making them 2 of the biggest landholders in the country. They have 4 children together.


The couple got married in 1993 long before Bezos became rich. He actually became a millionaire in 1997.  They live in Washington, which is a community property state.  That means any assets accrued during the marriage are split 50/50, unless there’s a prenup.

Alvaro Morata’s agent has travelled to London on Wednesday to meet with Chelsea officials and discuss a potential January loan move to Sevilla, a source has told ESPN FC.


Juanma Lopez met Sevilla director Joaquin Caparros at the beginning of the week to sound out any potential deal following the former Real Madrid forward’s difficult start to the campaign, in which he has scored nine goals in 24 matches — starting just 18 games.

Caparros confirmed Sevilla’s interest in Morata on Tuesday with an interview to the club’s TV channel, as he explained their desire to sign at least one forward in this window to complement Andre Silva and Wissam Ben Yedder.



Sevilla are third in La Liga but are also competing in the Europa League and Copa del Rey and manager Pablo Machin tends to play a 3-5-2 system with two forwards.
Morata would welcome a return to Spain as he looks to relaunch his career following a difficult last 18 months.

Despite confirming Sevilla’s interest in Morata, Caparros said negotiations would be difficult due to the total fee — including the player’s wages — while Chelsea would likely need to sign a replacement before allowing the Spaniard to leave.


“It is true that we have monitored Morata’s situation but it’s also true that it’s a very, very complex operation because of the cost of the transfer,” Caparros said.

Bayern Munich defender, Jerome Boateng will be visiting Ghana for the very first time.
Jerome born to a German mother and a Ghanaian father in Berlin.

In an Instagram post, the German-born Ghanaian international expressed his joy ahead of his trip to the country.

He wrote: “Special trip ahead… can‘t wait to visit Ghana for the very first time.”

The experienced centre-back in an earlier interview revealed that he will be visiting Ghana and lo and behold he has stick to his words.

“I have been to Africa but I didn’t go to Ghana,” Boateng told DW.

Although yet to visit Ghana, the former Manchester City defender holds the country dearly in his heart.

“The tattoo started when I was 16-year-old,” Jerome said.

“I was with my two older brothers and they said ‘today we are all going to do the same tattoo but don’t tell your mother’.

“So we all went and had our bodies tattooed.
“It was the continent of Africa with Ghana inside.”

Jerome is the younger brother of Kevin Prince Boateng who has played 15 times for the Black Stars, scoring two goals in the process.

The 29-year-old was a key for Joachim Löw ‘s side that won the Fifa World Cup with Die Mannschaft in 2014 which was held in Brazil.

Juan Mata has thanked Jose Mourinho for “the trophies we won together” but is excited to now have “the legendary Ole Gunnar Solskjaer” in the Manchester United hot seat.

Singer, Jane Awindor, better known as Efya has once again denied ever engaging in any romantic relationship with Nigerian superstar Wizkid.

Rumors had it that the two musicians are in a serious relationship but have decided to keep it a secret from the media.

But according to the “Until The Dawn” singer, there’s no iota of truth in those claims since they’re not seeing each other.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM’s flagship show Daybreak Hitz show with host Andy Dosty, she stated unambiguously that there has never been anything like that going on between her and Wizkid but they are close only for music purposes.'
