Jobs/Vacancies / World Bank Africa Fellowship Program! Calling On All(fresh/near Complete) Ph.Ds by mhoo(f): 1:58am On Sep 30, 2017
https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/414972940/

Seniority Level: Mid-Senior level

Industry: International Trade and Development
Employment Type: Full-time
Job description
The Africa Region of the World Bank Group (WBG) is announcing the third Africa Fellowship Program for Ph.D. students and recent graduates who are Sub-Saharan nationals. The program intends to attract young African talent to the World Bank Group workplace.

This year, the program is run by the World Bank’s Office of Chief Economist for Africa in collaboration with the Fragility, Conflict & Violence (FCV) Unit. Started in 2013 by World Bank Africa Vice President Makhtar Diop, the World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program aims to build a pipeline of Sub-Saharan African researchers and professionals, particularly women, who are interested in working in the development field at home or abroad, and in starting careers with the WBG. Many graduates of the fellowship program have gone on to join the WBG, and others have pursued promising development careers around the world.
About the Fellowship

Fellows will spend a minimum of six months at the World Bank offices in Washington, D.C. or in field offices, getting hands-on experience in development work. This includes knowledge generation and dissemination, design of global and country policies, and the building of institutions to achieve inclusive growth in developing countries. While benefitting from research and innovation in multiple sectors, fellows will also work on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations that contribute to the World Bank goal of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity.

This year, thanks to a generous contribution from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), there are 10 additional fellowship positions with a special focus on forced displacement. The 10 selected fellows will work on forced displacement research in the context of operations led by the World Bank Group (WBG) or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or the Middle East. For these additional 10 positions, candidates from refugee and internally displaced communities and/or with proven experience on forced displacement will be given a priority. Selected candidates with a strong interest in the area of forced displacement will work on research programs targeting refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities.

Fellows will be expected to complete a research project or prepare a research paper to present to staff. High-standard papers may be published internally. Specifically, selected participants will:

Gain a better understanding of the World Bank Group's mission and operations
Access quality data for their research work
Interact with seasoned experts in the field of development
Contribute to the World Bank Group's mission

Who Should Apply

Sub-Saharan nationals who are recent Ph.D. graduates, or current doctoral students within a year of completing or graduating from a Ph.D. program in the following fields: economics, applied statistics and econometrics, impact evaluation, education, health, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, demography, forced displacement, and all relevant development fields.

Candidates must:

be a recent PhD. graduate or be enrolled in an academic institution as a PhD. student and returning to university after the fellowship
have an excellent command of English, both written and verbal
possess strong quantitative and analytical skills
Be born on or after October 1, 1986

The following additional attributes are highly desirable:

a command of an additional World Bank official language
national from fragile and conflict-affected countries
candidates from refugee and internally displaced communities and/or with proven experience on forced displacement

Selection Process

The deadline to submit an application is November 19, 2017. After applying online, the most suitable candidates will be identified, and their application packages forwarded to World Bank Africa Region managers and participating departments for consideration. Departments and managers will then indicate their preferences, as well as the project to be undertaken.

Selected candidates will then be notified and, upon acceptance, will be hired as short-term consultants for a minimum of six months. Fellows will receive consultant fees, round-trip economy class air travel to Washington, D.C. or a WBG country office from their university, and worker's compensation insurance.

A question on "Theology" issue was raised this morning and Another Theologian was silently following and got her visa approved in less than 12hrs. Hmmmn!!. We will actually take, read and digest transcripts as dey come . And @bolded, it really calm someone's nerve. Congratulations dearie! kiss . undecided
My sister want to study Theology and she need funding like Kilode!, She'll like to apply to your school, What's the name of the school, Make I send you pm

imperiouxx:

Don't get the discussion wrong. The question wasn't about how to get visa with a course but what the course can do for you at the long run. I'm saying this from my honest heart with the way the market is in U.S.

Teaching would have be good with it but no school will employ international students who don't have higher degree mostly in science. It all boils down to "we don't file for permanent residence".

@Profojah, I had not seen Awe2015's post when I put up my transcript. If I had, maybe I wouldn't have dignified your sarcasm with a response.
@imperiouxx, the transcript wasn't put up to make a point about the course. + I think I get your point, many have raised concerns about my choice and many more will but just remember "to each his own". This so called "American dream" differs for everybody; some people aren't just as "desperate" as some others. I made a choice to tow the line of Religious Studies - filled it out in Jamb form; I work with one of the best banks in Nigeria (take home pays the bills n gives room to save up A LOT) but I'm walking away from this to pursue a Masters in Religious Studies (and not settling for a MBA) because I have a pretty good idea of my desired destination (and it has nothing to do with Priesthood). Do me a favour n send me PMs so I can invite you for dinner and more when I get to the destination!

Theology and Religious Studies are 2 different things... the latter is broader (cuts across various religious traditions and culture). My school is Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC.
All the best to your sister!

I just stumbled on this thread ystday (a day to my interview) n considering d fact that going through ppplez interview experiences helped calm my nerves a bit + NL has helped my previous struggles a lot, I decided to share my experience...

I was scheduled for 6:30am put I didn't arrive until past 7 ('cause of the accident on 3rd MLB)... I found favour n those verification guys dint really hassle me about my lateness.

VO (Fine dude): Good morning
ME: Good morning
(Passed him passport, ds160 confirmation n I-20)
VO: Why are you going to the US
ME: For my Masters

VO: What Subject?
ME: Religious Studies

VO: What did you study for undergrad?
ME: Same thing, Religious Studies

VO: When did you finish from Uni
ME: (erroneously said Jan 2010, then I corrected myself) Jan 2011

VO: What have you been doing since then?
ME: Did my NYSC and been working in a bank since 2013

VO: What do you want to do with your Masters?
ME: It is a bridge to where I'm going to (told him my actual career destination) which explains my concentration - Religion & Public engagement
(Then he types to about 1min n I'm busy praying for favour in my mind)

VO (Flips through my passport): Have you ever traveled outside Nigeria?
ME: Yes

VO: Where?
ME: Benin Republic n Liberia (then I'm thinking "hmmmm, is this the time to be louding that you have been to Liberia?"wink

VO: What did you go and do in Liberia?
ME: Went to witness the swearing in of President Sirleaf for 2nd term as part of an entourage for the state government I was working with then (during NYSC).
(Then the dude did plenty typing again o n i did my own silent prayer too)

VO: Are you married?
ME: No (I had initially planned to borrow my sister's engagement ring n complete this answer with I'm engaged to be married o... but I decided to be a proud omo Jesu n flaunt my single status)

VO: Got any kids?
ME: No
(Plenty typing followed again...then the musical, golden statement)

VO: Your Visa has been approved, you can pick up your passport at the circled location within a week (Passes me collection slip and my I-20)
ME: Thank you, Have a nice day!

I hope this helps calm someone's nerves! All the statements n letters I carried remained in my clear bag - not a mention of how I was gonna finance my education. Although I got a full tuition scholarship, I was still pretty freaked out about any issue being raised about my finances.

Goodluck and God's favour to all those coming behind!
(Forgive all typos... I refuse to proofread this my epistle)

Board a bus going to Eko Hotel Roundabout and stop at the last bus stop.
At the bus stop, take left and enter the first street by your right.
Walk down a little and you will see Idowu Taylor street by your left.
championer: how do i locate idowu taylor street easily from CMS

Think thaz a rada long journey... I'll advise u take a "law school/Idowu Taylor" bus from either CMS or obalende. Diamond HO is just after law school so drop by law school GATE.
