Sports / Messi: Read The Latest Update by miccent: 11:23pm On Apr 01, 2017
The news that Lionel Messi would miss four huge World Cup qualifiers
dropped like a piece in Argentina. The run of the mill distrustful
thoughts regarding FIFA fundamentally undermining the Albiceleste's
attempts to meet all prerequisites for the World Cup promptly
surfaced however soon another liable gathering was singled out.

The overrunning well known feeling is that the Argentine Football
Affiliation (AFA) is accountable for this incredibly merciless teach —
and it's clear why.

Food / Africa's Top Health Challenge: Cardiovascular Disease by miccent: 7:44pm On Oct 31, 2014
High blood pressure affects nearly one in two Africans over the age of 25.

Standing in the lobby of the Sheraton Times Square Hotel at the Clinton Global Initiative’s 10th annual meeting, Kenyan physician Dr. Allan Pamba excitedly tells me about a new initiative to train African scientists in non-communicable disease (NCD) research. This $8.1 million NCD Open Lab is the brainchild of GlaxoSmithkline (GSK), where he is now vice president of pharmaceuticals for East Africa, but I first met him when he was an intern at a rural hospital in the foothills of Mount Kenya nearly 15 years ago. He explains to me that he now thinks of non-communicable diseases with the same urgency as he did infectious diseases back then.

Like Pamba, for as long as I can remember, working as a doctor in sub-Saharan Africa, the three big catchwords were: malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. These diseases ravaged the sub-continent and, rightfully so, received the most funding. But while donors have poured resources into fighting infectious diseases, non-communicable, chronic diseases have quietly but rapidly ascended the morbidity and mortality ladders, especially high blood pressure, or hypertension.

Today, cardiovascular disease is the number-one cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa in adults over the age of 30. Globally, low- and middle-income countries bear 80 percent of the world’s death burden from cardiovascular disease. One of the strongest drivers is undiagnosed and untreated hypertension, which affects nearly one in two Africans over the age of 25—the highest rate of any continent in the world.

But current funding spins a different narrative. In November 2010, a Center for Global development working paper on global development assistance for health (DAH) revealed that after controlling for burden of disease, 30 times more DAH money was allocated to malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV, compared to all NCDs combined. Astonished by these numbers, I called development economist Rachel Nugent, the lead author of that study, who is now director of the Disease Control Priorities Network, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Though Nugent has not officially updated the numbers since her 2007 calculations, she has insight into current trends, and says that assistance for NCDs is increasing, but slowly. Nugent agrees with Pamba that sub-Saharan African countries recognize that hypertension and cardiovascular disease are priorities, but the lack of funding is a major barrier. “Without a doubt the perception of what causes and who gets chronic disease is a barrier to donor investment,” Nugent says. “Donors don’t say it, but I am quite convinced that in the backs of the minds of those in wealthier countries is that NCDs are for rich, fat white men. It’s not something poor children and adults get—but that’s wrong. That perception that it’s people’s own fault and that you can’t change behavior may seem believable, but that doesn’t accord with the facts.”

As Nugent insinuated, hypertension in this population is not exclusively a lifestyle issue; studies have shown that sub-Saharan Africans may be genetically predisposed as well. One hypothesis is that certain African populations may be more vulnerable to salt retention, resulting in more drug-resistant hypertension that strikes at a younger age. This idea is not new. Pamba shares a personal story from his youth: “I’m from western Kenya. My father had hypertension. He came home one day with an article showing hypertension is increased in our population because of a certain gene. When I reflect on that now, it means someone was thinking about this all the way back in the 1980s!”

Food / Eating This Fruit Every Day Can Help You Lose Weight... by miccent: 11:19pm On Oct 27, 2014
Could an apple a day keep the extra pounds away? According to a recent study in Food Chemistry, yes, because apples contain non-digestible compounds that promote the growth of good bacteria in your gut associated with weight loss.

How it works: These compounds--fiber and polyphenols--remain undigested until they’re fermented in the colon, where they act as food for friendly bacteria and help your body outweigh the bad bacteria that thrives on junk food, said lead study author and food scientist Giuliana Noratto. This restored microbial balance appears to reduce chronic inflammation, which increases the risk of obesity, and boosts feelings of fullness to help stave off overeating.

“Obese people have an out-of-balance gut,” Noratto said. “So changing our gut bacteria via what we eat, making it similar to that of a lean person, could help prevent weight gain.”
In the study, obese mice that were fed apple compounds ended up with gut bacteria similar to that of lean mice.

But what kind of apple you eat may matter. Tart Granny Smiths reign supreme: They contain the highest concentration of fiber and polyphenols compared to varieties like Gala, McIntosh, and Golden Delicious.

Need more reason embrace the fall fruit? Previous research links apples to everything from a healthier immune system to a reduced risk of stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease.

Aim to eat an apple a day--or up to two or three, Noratto said. As for apple pie or crisp? Sorry, those don’t count: Cooking destroys the polyphenols in apples. Try some Granny Smith slices dunked in cinnamon-spiked peanut butter instead, or paired with a sharp cheddar cheese.

Health / Change This One Thought And Lose Weight... by miccent: 11:04pm On Oct 27, 2014
Your thoughts shape your body.

Might sound weird, but it's true. You see, everything you do starts in the mind. So, when you emotionally eat, you had the thought to pull the bag of chips out of the pantry first, before you went and did it. When you felt angry at your spouse and dove into the tub of ice cream, you thought about the ice cream then went to the kitchen and the numbing out began.

Your mind is incredibly powerful and learning to use it properly will help you lose weight twice as fast... if not faster.

One of the things to become acutely aware of is what is the story you are telling yourself in your mind about weight loss? Do you think that it's hard, always a struggle, never works for you? If you answered yes, then we need to turn these thoughts around or it WILL always be a struggle. There is no other way, for your thoughts and beliefs will always be creating your reality.

It's the art of telling a different story about weight loss and being healthy, so that what you're telling yourself inside is something that gets you really excited and happy about your life, THEN your situation can start to change!

I mapped out three easy steps for you to start this process immediately, but remember... you didn't come up with these beliefs overnight. You've been reiterating them to yourself for decades, so be patient with yourself as you shift them.

3 Steps To Make Your Thoughts Accelerate Your Weight Loss:

Become Aware: The first thing that has to be done is you have to actually realize what you're telling yourself. You have had these same thoughts so long, and have probably been conditioned to believe them since you were a child, so you may not even realize how negative they are! Becoming aware of what you really think about yourself, your weight, your body, and your weight loss journey is crucial so we can turn around the parts that need to be recreated.
Tell A Different Story: I love this step, it's so fun. I don't want you to limit yourself here! Really allow yourself to get clear on exactly what you want. Do you want to lose 20 lbs? 100 lbs? What's reasonable for your body type? Do you want to start to love eating healthy foods? Or maybe you want to start exercising because you enjoy it and not doing it daily makes you feel as if something is missing? Write out exactly what you want with your health and start to tell this NEW story to yourself and allow yourself to FEEL the excitement that it's on its way, right around the corner, ready for you to attain.
Be CONSISTENT: So, telling yourself that new story may feel really weird at first because it's not here yet... do it anyways. If you don't, you will fall back into the old way of thinking about your situation. Being consistent and EXCITED about what's to come will lead you to take different actions, make different decisions with your food, and the universe will support you.
One of the biggest things to remember here is that the Law of Attraction is one of the greatest laws in the entire Universe and it is ALWAYS TURNED ON! It's never turned off, so if you're constantly having a conversation with yourself or others that you are fat, can't lose weight, weight loss is so hard, well guess what... it will be!

If you change the stories you are telling yourself and you get excited about your NEW story and FEEL (this is key) how it will be when you are lighter and happier... there's NO WAY the Universe will not match the thoughts you're now believing.

Even if it feels hard or weird because these results haven't happened yet for you, DO IT ANYWAYS! Keep telling yourself the new story so that it can sink down into you on a cellular level and become a part of who you are.

You will be surprised how quickly you will start to notice changes, IF you are consistent with your new story.

Would you like to know the fastest way to lose 10 pounds of fat in less than 10 days?

Health / Is Skipping Breakfast The Key To Weightloss? by miccent: 1:41am On Oct 22, 2014
RESCHEDULING THE KEY: New study suggests that skipping breakfast is the key to weight loss.

It might be regarded as the most important meal of the day, but skipping breakfast is the best way to tackle the epidemic of obesity and fatty liver disease, new research suggests.

The study, conducted by Monash University in Australia, concluded that watching the clock rather than counting kilojoules was key to weight loss.

Thirty-two patients who suffered from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fasted and took in no kilojoules between 8pm and noon the following day.

All patients lost weight over the initial 12-week period, while patients who fasted also reduced their waist circumference, which, according to experts, is one of the ways to measure a decrease in liver damage.

The study also found there was no difference in kilojoule intake, activity levels, hunger levels or quality of life experienced between the two groups.

Melbourne gastroenterologist Alex Hodge, who worked on the study, said similar research had been done on animals before, but these new results indicated there was hope to tackle Australia and New Zealand's obesity problem.

"Experimental studies have shown that restricting access to food, without calorie restriction, prevented animals developing conditions such as fatty liver disease," Dr Hodge said.

"Despite the small numbers of participants in this novel study, there was a significant health benefit from intermittent fasting. When the standard care group was changed to intermittent fasting for an additional 12 weeks, they continued to show improvements."

Those who fasted also recorded improvements in visceral fat, insulin resistance, blood pressure and other measures of liver damage.

Meanwhile, senior nutritionist at Nutrition Australia Aloysa Hourigan said weight loss was only one component of health and certain nutrients might be neglected during long periods of fasting.

"If you're eating less in total, you might be also be getting less nutrients," Hourigan said. "You might lose weight, but that's not the only important thing to health.

"Something breakfast contributes is milk, so you're more likely to get dairy out of it, so you would wonder when people aren't having breakfast, does their dairy intake go down?

"There's some evidence around that actually eating breakfast improves work and learning performance. While the study might be looking at weight, we mustn't forget all the cognitive things that might be affected as well."
