@Mundele, Which Congo are you talking about?? Is it Congo-Kinshasha OR Congo-Brazzaville?? You will do well to look for a Mechanic who is familiar with American vans in your intended area of operation. There is nothing that can ruin a transportation venture faster than poor equipment knowledge and maintenance. If you find one mechanic that is capable or competent with these vehicles then it makes your life a lot less miserable (believe me, you will have a lot of other headaches to deal with in Africa!). Once you find a capable mechanic, it will be easy to sponsor one or two apprentice/mechanics to learn the peculiarities of the vehicles from him. Never underestimate the problems that poor local knowledge or maintenance can give you! Your idea of stockpiling spare parts is a brilliant one. Essential and routine maintenance parts, though often inexpensive, can be very critical to the seemless operation of your business. You should be stocked with parts such as : Brake Pads/Shoes Radiator Hoses Oil Filters/Air Filter/Fuel Filter Spark Plugs & Wires Ignition Coil Pack Spark Plugs (perhaps?) Light Bulbs Wiper Blades With good routine maintenance, most other parts and components usually give you some form of warning and adequate time for planning, budgeting and procurement before eventual failure!. For parts like Shock absorbers, Alternators, Starter motors , etc - most of them can be temporarily mended (in Africa) while you make quick arrangements to have the parts shipped to you. I cannot say I am familiar with the business environment in your intended location however the challenges faced by transportation operators (especially in Africa) are similar and universal in nature. You may have to invest a lot of time thinking about your management strategy - how to adequately control and reduce the negative impact that the 'Human factor' (, knowing Africans!) can play in diminishing your business returns! Many modern industries, including the Automobile industry, are absent in modern African nations becos we have an educational system that has failed to explain and break down the basic concept of industrial manufacturing processes. And on the other hand, the Nigerian government has failed to recognize and encourage an economic policy that rewards entrepreneurial activities, free capitalistic endeavors and technological transfers. Rather maintaining policies that gravitate towards the self indulging principle of hedonistic consumerism which has pervaded our entire socio-economic fabric and mentality. Contrary to what most people think, the concept of a Nigerian made Car is not so much an engineering challenge, rather, it is one that presents an entrepreneurial and enterprise challenge. Most people tend to think about car manufacture in terms of engineering and fabrication without realizing that the process of making and manufacturing a car in today's world, has a lot more in common with building a house! The actual engineering takes place at the design and fabrication level. Beyond the conceptual level of development, the fabrication mostly takes place at the component development level. The science of car development is essential modular in nature and anybody that understands the concept of Object Oriented Design & Development will understand how this works. A deep and broad knowledge of the inner workings of the Automobile industry is essential to achieve any measure of success in actualizing the Made in Nigeria Car. In other words, to achieve this laudable achievement, one must have a deep knowledge of the processes of product development from conception to actualization, a brilliant understanding of the component and supply infrastructure and finally, a shrewd comprehension of the industry's endless possibilities and massive potentials for synergy in product development that is available to be tapped. We need to stop re-inventing the wheel! Building a Nigerian Car is no different from building a Nigerian house. Nobody builds a house by first starting a cement manufacturing plant! - there are cement factories already in place to supply you! A builder does not need to be a bricklayer either, to build a house. What a property developer or builder needs is a full understanding of the skill sets, components, materials, standards and chains of supply available. In the same way, to build a Nigerian car, you will need to think like an entreprenuer rather than as a fabrication or mechanical engineer, although, engineering and design skills are an integral composite of the overall objective. As an entreprenuer who is investing time, skill and resources into a car manufacturing venture, you will need to understand that cars are essentially products that are made up of thousands of precision engineered components and modules that are assembled together to work in perfect synchro! It is indeed foolhardy for some local engineer to go wasting time putting together some metallic contraption that is essentially a crudely fabricated body strapped unto an engine, transmission and chassis. That is not a car! And it is certainly not made in Nigeria! It is simply a vehicle with body fabricated locally and one that has been poorly fabricated at that! Engine is Toyota, Transmission is Nissan and Chassis is Opel! When you talk about manufacturing something, there has to be originality in design, standards to adhere to and the product has to be something that is marketable and consumer ready. There must also be consistency and specific tolerances in your finished product. What am I saying?? We should focus our energy on the methods of modern engineering development, the manufacturing process, understanding the inter-relation and synergy that exists between various industries and technological transfer processes. How does a computer go from start to finish? How many industries are involved? In the same way, ask yourself the question, how does a car go from conception to completion? How many industries are involved? Where is the supply chain? What degree of synergy is required? What components are already on the shelf? How much optimization or re-design would certain existing components need. How much of the concept or design is uncharted grounds? What components are designed and fabricated in-house and what components are contracted to suppliers? There are hundreds or perhaps thousands of decision and questions to be answered before there is any product! As a 19 years old, making the Nigerian car was something I dreamed of accomplishing. Today, the passage of time has done nothing to douse that passion, however, nearly twenty years of extra education, exposure and experience has helped me to understand the finer details and intricacies of accomplishing this goal! The advent of the Nigerian car is certainly a possibility, however we need to learn to approach it with a different and broader mindset, if we are to accomplish anything. 1 Like |

I was probably 12 years old and a form (2) boarding student in secondary school and the events of this fateful day, I could not explain up till this very moment. It was standard procedure and school house rule that all students must be in study hall between 7pm and 9pm for juniors and up until 10pm for seniors. It was almost 9pm and nearly time to head back to the hostel. However, I had the misfortune of running into a mean spirited senior who had this 'knack' for making me miserable! He called out my name and 'ordered' me to go pick up a textbook for him in the HSC dormitory block - that was how it all started! In those days, HSC Students (students in lower six and upper six) were housed in a separate part of the school grounds, in a block of hostels that was called 'Log-cabin' (because it was built with pre-fabricated wood, American style!). The Log-cabin block was not only an 'off limit' area, particularly for us juniors but it was also a notoriously remote and lonely location! The seniors loved it cos of the rebellious, fringe lawlessness it afforded them. We juniors simply loathed and feared the place. The log-cabin also had tons of sinister stories about it – much of which I had consumed gleefully in idle curiosity. There was a particular tale of two old grave sites behind the building. The story goes that the tombs were the final resting place of a farmer and his wife, who owned the school land several decades before the school was founded. It was said that the ghosts of this couple haunted the vicinity of the log-cabin and the woods behind it. I was stunned at the senior’s mean spirited demand and protested vehemently. As a last resort, I tried very hard to win his compassion, all to no avail! As I walked away gloomily, I was befuddled by the senior’s insensitivity cos he wanted me to walk the distance to the Log-cabin, which was not a problem in itself, except that the entire Log-cabin vicinity would be desolate, dark and terrifyingly empty since every senior student would be in study hall until 10pm! Surely, he could borrow or share a classmates textbook? (they only had an hour of study time left anyway!). No junior was willing to embark on this treacherous mission with me (especialy that late!). I had no choice but to go to the log-cabin alone. It was a dark, cloudy and wet night with neither moon nor stars shining. I made a grim effort to convince myself that all those old tales were just lies and I was not superstitious anyway………. or was I? I hastily made my way to the woody cabins and wasted no time going to the senior’s bed space and set my mind on the task of finding the textbook as soon as possible. Few minutes into my urgent search, I heard a loud thud in one of the adjoining rooms and some shuffling and then silence ……, I froze! I had never been more terrified in my life! I knew there was nobody else in those rooms ….or was I wrong?? The urgency I felt turned into desperation, I bent over in frantic frenzy as I tried to focus of the task of finding the textbook but my mind was running amok! Finally, I caught a glimpse of the textbook, sitting in the same place I had searched over a dozen times but had failed to see. I grabbed the text book with vicious fury and shuffled briskly out of the long hostel room. A few more steps and I would be out of that room and out of that God forsaken hostel, so I thought. A loud thud, even louder than the earlier one, stopped me in my track! I was absolutely terrified and at my wits end. The loud sound was soon followed by shuffling sound coming from the ceiling level in the adjoining rooms. My mind was racing, however somehow in there I found the capacity to reason. I suspected that the shuffling sound was caused by the infamous big rats that had taken residence and found a home in the log cabin’s youthful filth! Just as I was beginning to calm down and get a little bolder, I heard a door open and slam shut further down the patio corridor. I stared down the hallway knowing the sound came from the bathroom area. “Who is there? ” , I yelled out nervously. No sound ……absolute silence! I summoned all the courage I had left and bellowed out with a commanding tone; “Whoever that is, this is not funny o!” Eerie silence followed by shuffling sound from the ceiling. A door leading to another dormitory room creaked open slowly. The florescent lamp in that room kept flickering on and off. I had slowly eased myself to the opened patio or hallway and my heart was ready to leap out of my chest. Gararararararararrararararararra! - A familiar but nerve jarring sound was heard. It was the sound of something being dragged on the empty graveled yard in front of the log cabin. As I twirled around to look, all I could see was an amber colored plastic bucket sitting alone in the graveled yard. I did not recall seeing the bright colored bucket there on my way in! I was absolutely petrified! My frayed nerves could take no more! I tightened my grip on the textbook and lunged forward instinctively. “I was getting the heck out of here”, I thought. I could hear another door violently slam shut behind me but there was no looking back for me. I was already moving faster than the speed of sound! Out in the open, I gathered speed with alarming alacrity. Few seconds later, my feet were barely touching the ground as levity took hold and gravity ceased to have any effect whatsoever! I quite simply hydro-planed, at the maximum allowable velocity, back to the study hall classrooms. I burst into the study hall hallway like a projected beam of light. My eyes were the size of saucer plates and my body trembled with terror. I was wet, my chest was heaving heavily and I was absolutely bewildered! Classmates who had hitherto been oblivious to my absence, were drawn to the incoherent gibberish that I uttered as I tried to describe what I had just experienced. Needlessly, it was to them nothing but amusement. For many years and till this very day, I find myself wondering what really transpired in that place, on that faithful day. Did the older students play a trick on me or was it just a culmination of unusual events that played on my imagination? I never did have any senior tease me or make fun of me (which is what students do after a successful prank). Was there some truth to the old tales about the place being haunted? Perhaps, I will never find out but I am not in a hurry to forget either. It was the scariest experience I ever had! |

Here we go again, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 'Mr Multi-Millioniare Freshmoney' at it again!  Everybody is a small boy! (yet he recently claimed he himself was 'under 30' in another thread) Everybody is a pauper! (cos he is P-diddy's brother and he has a private jet and a Yacht moored in Bahamas) Everybody is uneducated (cos he assumes that he has good command of the english language {which baffles me to no end!!}) Oh yes, ,,,,,,,,,,,, he has a stable of exotic 2007 & 2008 cars (yet he is on nairaland whinning about prices!) And did you notice? (The only Nairalander to have his itinerary attached to his name {don't forget about his 09 Range Rover too!!}) And we mustn't forget that he just finished building his massive mansion in Lagos (hmmm,,,,,,,,,,,,I wonder how many garages it will have??) Did I mention he was 'nearly 30' ? (apparently, his chronological age doesn't match his psychological age cos HE IS A BIG BOYYYYY!!) How much of all these stuff is the product of delusional psychosis is anyone's guess, but one thing is sure - we have an acute case of Pathological Liar Syndrome and it would augur well for Nairalanders to have this in mind when dealing with him! Aside from the obvious flaw and weakness in his feeble personality, which gets aggravated when he feels threatened or he feels his delicate ego is bruised, I am sure he might otherwise pass for a normal guy and a regular Nairalander under most circumstances!  |

You should have a card (looks like a credit card) with the Radio code printed on it in your glove compartment or inside the Car's Manual booklet/bundle. If you do not find the Radio code (card) or any code written on a piece of paper by the prevous owner, the only thing to do is to pull out the Stereo (quite easy in Audi) and copy all the Serial number, Chassis number and DIN information written on the 'Stereo' by stereo manufacturer. I do not know where the Audi was imported from, however, if it was imported from the USA, then all you have to do is to take information to an Audi dealership and you will be given the Radio Code. If the car was imported from Europe, I assume you may have to get it from an european dealership or talk to Siena. Hope this helps. Cheers. |

@Pak One of the problems with VW cars and a lot of other automobile Makes and Models in Nigeria is the lack of competent local expertise and poor product knowledge. It is a shame that such knowledge and expertise has become extinct in a country that assembled and produced VW cars for over 25 years! VW passat is a very good car which has excellent build quality. VW Passat could be imported from several parts of the world and what particular engine your car has will really depend on where the car was imported from. In the US, 1998-2004 Passats mainly came with two engine types: A 1.8L 4Cyl Turbo that was also shared with the base Audi A4 and some other VW products such as Golf MK4 and the other engine is the bigger one: A 2.8L V6 engine that is also shared with both the upscale Audi A4 and the Audi A6. None of these engines have a reliability issue. Infact, my brother just junked his 1998 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo after he had clocked an amazing 285K miles on the original engine!(the car still drove although the engine was tired!) If you are going to buy a VW in Naija, I will advise you to find yourself a decent and knowledgable VW Auto mechanic (definitely not the Toyota Corolla guy!). German automobiles usually possess a certain degree of engineering peculiarity and product idiosyncrasy which may therefore require reasonable depth of knowledge. Most Naija mechanics are half-baked with very limited depth or vertical knowledge AND absolutely no horizontal knowledge nor broad expertise - most of them will approach a VW/Audi product with the same presumptions carried over from a Toyota product and this is why they fail terribly in giving accurate and insightful diagnosis! Unlike foreign trained Auto Technicians, who are schooled in the fundamental principles of Automobile engineering along with a curriculum which encompasses both conceptual and experiential knowledge, most Naija mechanics have a skill that is based on experiential knowledge only and is therefore limited to the product line to which they were exposed and the circumstances which were encountered during the course of their apprenticeship. Since most of them were mostly exposed to Japanese cars of the 80's and early 90's and some of the older Benzes, many of them are beginning to have problems with the modern engineering seen in cars today. Cars like the Passat and several other makes and models simply expose and aggravate the mechanic's inherent incompetence and ineptitude! This is why it is essential to have a mechanic who knows your car and won't treat a BMW with assumptions carried over from a Honda! Lastly, I will advise you to buy the 2.8L V6 VW Passat - Not only is it more powerful and torquey, the engine is also extremely durable and near bulletproof! (as long as your mechanic doesn't destroy it!) The gas consumption may be a little less economical than the 1.8L turbo, be rest assured the difference won't break the bank! The added advantage of better performance, increased durability, an engine that is trouble free and is packaged for easy maintenance more than makes up for the slight decrease in fuel economy. The Passat with 1.8 turbo is also an excellent choice however I have my reservations about putting a Naija mechanic and a turbocharged engine in the same room!  My pick: VW Passat GLX with 2.8L V6. @Siena!!!, ,,,,,,, you get eagle eyes oo!! haba!! you just had to spot the conversion anomalies It is a shame they had to be so inept with the advertisement. The car has a worn steering wheel leather and the rest of it is really just dirty. You can tell a lot of the filth comes from the conversion process and mechanics. The environment is ,,,,,eeeem,,,,,, just plain terrible!. I will be interested in knowing who converted it too. Meanwhile, @Siena, I got an Audi for you on my thread, you better send me a buyer oo! |
