Get me the compression test results and like Sultaan said, get the computer codes and I am very sure we can get to the root of this. Cheers.

Your mechanic is an slowpoke!  (I am sorry to be so harsh)
Perhaps you have money and time to waste, but I can assure you that you will still have to deal with this problem afterwards!

I asked you for a simple test - compression test! Give that to me and we will go from there! Why is that so hard? why is it taking 2 weeks?
If your mechanic cannot find his way around a compression test, then I fear for your prospects - you might as well start looking for a new guy!
A standard compression test should only take 15 minutes!
Christ!!!!,,,,,,,,,, are we so incompetenthuh?

This your mechanic guy can't even spell part names  grin Dude you are in big trouble with this guy, he intends to clean you out!
Let me re-write that 'bleeding' list, he is asking you to replace the following:
1. Ring Set
2. Main Bearings
3. Connecting Rod Bearing
4. Set of Pistons (6 in all!)  cry
5. Oil Pump  shocked
6. Inlet Valves
7. Exhaust Valves
8. ATF (automatic Transmission Fluid)  huh
9. Engine Oil
10. Timing Belt
11.  (Resuting Clin??) - I do not know what the heck this is  huh

Essentially, this guy is telling you that the only useful thing in your car's engine is the engine block! (He is a complete lunatic!) He hasn't even taken a step in the direction of the likely culprits - The electrical/Ignition system components!! This dude is telling you that your beloved Lexus' engine is completely worn even without showing any of the usual signs such as smoking, oil consumption and without a simple compression test being done huh - Your mechanic is beyond incompetent, he is a roving disaster and catastrophe waiting to happen and he has decided that you are his next victim!!

Here is my advice: Can you go find a competent mechanic who can do a compression test?? Abi, is that too hard?? embarassed
Email me at midas02@yahoo.com so that I can send you my Phone number.
Goodluck. (you will need it!).

Car TalkRe: What Could Be Wrong With My Car? I Need Help. by Midas02(m): 8:03pm On Jun 08, 2009
I changed the EGR valve over the weekend and stil have the same problem with the car. Still have these code showing twice when i scan the car- P0401 EXHAUST AIR RECIRCULATION FLOW INSUFFICIENT DETECTED( one with freeze frame the other with pending)
Please where is the MAFS in a 1997 toyota camry located( thot this would help: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/How-to-clean-your-MAF_80603.htm). I will like solve this asap. Also noticed that the A/c wont cool up unless the RPM is above 1000 or when the car is in motion. When you mentioned in the above quote that the engine could be burning too rich or lean, what does that mean?

Waiting to hear from you.

Thanks
@Auto Freak,

I got your mail. The video you sent me is perfect - that is far more explanatory and visual than I could ever accomplish with words alone! The car being serviced there is a Nissan Maxima engine. Essentially the same thing applies to the Toyota engine.

Since you say that you have replaced the EGR valve then next, you need to clean out your MAFS as explained in the video (I will advise you once again to use a reasonable mechanic)

Finally, you need to clear the code on the Car's ECU (computer) by using the Scan tool. This is becos many times these codes are hard-coded into the computer's memory and the computer system won't dynamically re-adjust it's reading to the current state. Consequently, the ECU may still be using the hard coded information to perform evasive survival procedures, as has been programmed into the computer, without realizing or having the means to dynamically re-adjust to current state. If the problem persists, the ECU will notify you by showing fresh codes and 'Check Engine' light will come on again.

So, here are the steps to follow:

1) Replace your EGR valve (if you haven't)
2) Clean out your MAFS sensor and your Intake (as shown in the video)
3) Use a Scan Tool to clear out the code
4) Observe car for the next few days to see if problem persists. Also watch to see if the 'Check Engine' light comes back on.

Let us know what happens.

In Japanese domestic market (JDM), Toyota has always traditionally given each model it's own model logo/emblem. If you look at some old Toyotas (80's) that we use to drive in Nigeria you will see this emblems on their grills. It is especially noticeable on Crowns, Carina(JDM), Corona(JDM), Cressida(JDM), Camry(JDM), etc. Prior to the 90's Toyota did not feel a need for a Company Brand logo/emblem however the need became obvious since this was the tradition with car makers internationally. In the mid-90's Toyota decided to identify it's products worldwide with a globally recognizeable Icon - this is when the current Toyota Logo/Emblem was born. In the Japanese local market however, Toyota still uses the traditional Model logos on models that have been around for a long time becos they have a huge customer base that has grown accustomed to these emblems. However, there is gradually increasing emphasis being placed on the company Toyota Logo as newer models with new names are being introduced and many of the older names are dying out.

@Tayo-UK,

Don't be discouraged! You may import the vehicles and they will convert it for you in Lagos (I don't know any particular place but I have seen it done several times).
Trucks are a lot easier to convert than cars cos the design is a cab-over design. I will however advice you to buy all the components that will need to be replaced in Europe before you ship or you might end up paying premium for them in Lagos.

You will probably need the following things:
1) Steering Rack box and steering assembly
2) Dashboard ( although the dashboard can be cut and the console repositioned with the rest of the dash panel rewelded in Naija)
3) Gear shift lever mechanism

Most other stuffs can be repositioned and rewired easily cos trucks have a lot of space. Goodluck.

@Folarino,

Is this how your engine lookshuh let me know.

AutosRe: My Honda Civic Millenium Model Suddenly Stop While On Top Gear by Midas02(m): 7:10pm On Jun 01, 2009
@Yemisiol

I will assume your car is a 2002 Honda Civic LX imported from the USA (correct me if I am wrong)

Going by the assumptions above, I will assume that your car uses Ignition Coil packs (verify this for me or simply take a picture of your engine). If your car is Yankee spec 2002 Civic LX, then it would probably be true.

There are two potential culprits:

1) The Crank Position Sensor on your Civic is going bananas : If this is the situation, you should have your check engine light on (please verify this for me).

2) The Main relay is another possible culprit : When faulty, Civic main relay is notorious for shutting down when it gets hot.

I need you to verify all the questions that need verification, then I can get more precise. Also let me know if your 'Check Engine' light is continuously on. If not, could you verify if it comes on (at least) when you turn on the ignition before starting the car?? Let me know.
Car TalkRe: Nairalanders Please Help Rx300 by Midas02(m): 6:23pm On Jun 01, 2009
Good Lord!!!  embarassed

Guys, could we just try and find out more by walking thru the process intelligently rather than throwing out all these wild and preposterous suggestions and guesses!

@Promise72
I am going to have to officially name you - (MR VIN)  cheesy Is it possible that you are making some money from "Carfax", cos every suggestion you ever make on Nairaland is about "VIN"? You just admitted that your Lexus did 250K miles with no problem and in the same breath you are suggesting that folarina's Lexus might have hard some odometer rollback issues even without an iota of evidence!. You seem to love fearmongering just as much as you love "VIN".  grin Even if he runs the VIN, will that help him to get his SUV running smooth again??  And for the records, the Lexus/Toyota 3.0L 1MZ-FE VVT-i V6 engine doesn't use spark plug wires, it uses ignition coil packs!

@Folarina
The problem you described is most certainly not a transmission issue, so don't worry about that. Let's get back on track: You will have to perform the compression test so that we can zero-in on the cylinders that have a malfunction. Once we isolate the malfunctioning cylinder(s), then we can start eliminating other possibilities by isolating the nature of the problem (whether it is an electrical or a mechanical issue?) with a simple process. There are a lot of possibilities for this engine fault - from the misplacement of 'ignition coil arrangement' to a 'slipped/stripped timing belt' which could throw the timing out of synchro! But it is too soon to tell you precisely what!

As is common in Naija, many times the initial problem is something simple and the final problem becomes something else! This is becos these mechanics lack process and often they cause more problems than they solve. For instance the Ignition coils might have been the initial problem but if the first mechanic who changed the spark plugs or the second mechanic who replaced the coils did not replace the Ignition coils in the correct order then you will have an engine malfunction! However, I do not want to get ahead of myself.

I need the following:
1) Year of the RX300
2) A well conducted compression test on all 6 cylinders

PS: Lexus are essentially luxury Toyotas and as such are very reliable and durable. Do not blame the car for the mis-diagnosis of half-baked mechanics! No car make/brand can survive ignorant abuse and misdiagnosis on a continuous basis without shutting down!
Car TalkRe: Nairalanders Please Help Rx300 by Midas02(m): 12:09am On May 30, 2009
You are obviously in trouble!!  huh

The only way to resolve this is to walk you thru the process - any other thing will be trial and error (like they have been putting you thru).
The noise you described suggests to me that you have some cylinders that are not performing. (wet plugs generally mean zero ignition which means no compression in that cylinder)

I honestly feel like beheading some mechanics in that Lagos!!! This should not be a trial and error thing - it should have been systematically approached by a simple elimination process! (without you buying a single unneccessary part!)

Here is your first assignment:
1) Have a competent mechanic perform a compression test on all your cylinders. The compression test must be done with a proper compression test meter.
2) I want to know the reading on each of the six cylinders (e.g: 165psi on cylinder 1, 140psi on cylinder 2,,,,,,,, etc)

I also suspect that you have issues with more that one cylinder, cos one cylinder shouldn't disable a V6 engine so badly as you described. We shall see.

Let me know.
