Dear all,especially 'Seniors',

I noticed that we rarely talk about funding here, although I know that it is the Nigerian culture to hide earnings but I feel it could help newbies make decisions especially those with "stella" profile (even though we with obasanjo profile need it too) as they maybe having multiple offers.Another thing that make me wonder what's wrong with sharing what the full funding entails is that we are almost anonymous here.

Also how has your experienced been with the amount given to you monthly,is it enough or you have to do extra "hustle" ?.
I am asking this especially to those who have full funding so that others coming may prepare their mind for what is ahead of them.

Thanks in anticipation.

P.S : make una leave that lab small, socialize here on nairaland and go back to the lab grin

Congratulations sis, May funding turnoniown towards you. grin
solihp:
Hello, I got into Villanova University . Got the email to check my application portal around 2am Nigeria time today. 4am Nigeria time yesterday, I got an email from the graduate director of my department that he has recommended me for admission.

It was such a fast turn over because I wrote my GRE on February 6th, I immediately sent my unofficial scores to him via email, when my scores became available online on February 14th, I uploaded it to my application, it was on Monday when my official scores got to them that all the requirement was met. I am of the opinion that he read my application before I submitted my official scores.

Also I have been in contact with him before my GRE exam and he waived the evaluation requirement and TOEFL for me when I sent my transcript and letter of English Proficiency from the Registrar of my school to him via email.

The deadline is March 1, so funding decision would come after then.

My profile: My search was guided by the time I took my GRE cause most school's deadline has closed. Here:
GRE: 161Q, 153V, 3.0AW( pretty disappointed by the AW but nothing spoil)
Undergrad: 3.47/4.00
No publication
3 letters of recommendation from my lecturers

Still awaiting decision from:

Bowling Green State University
University of iowa
Georgia State University
George Washington University
Michigan Technological University
American University

I applied to a mix of Masters in Statistics and Biostatistics

Fall 2019, yes we can

On Friday night, i became restless when one of my friends got his third acceptance with full funding in Chemistry while none of my applications have made a decision. I was like, "is it that they are not seeing my application?" I just turned off my data and slept off. So i woke up yesterday morning and turned on my data only to receive two emails from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that i have been admitted for their PhD in Chemical Engineering with full mouth watery funding.
Am super excited about the offer! But i am still waiting for Ga Tech and Minnesota so i will just wait.
Fall2019, we're going somewhere.

Thanks Bro for the response, we pray all the factors falls in our favor this Fall 2019 grin grin
Scholastica16:
Most of the feedback you read on grad cafe are from students who most likely schooled here. In my school here, some of the people I met who applied for a PhD have already been given a response as of 2 weeks ago. The reason behind that is not far-fetched: first, they apply earlier than most international students. Second, most of them are already in the system and know the ins and outs. In fact, most have already worked in the same groups they applied to so it is almost automatic for them. The last bit is trust factor. US schools generally trust their own better so it is easy for the adcoms to come to a decision quicker than they would over internationals. But that should not deter you. There is extra merit and even tax rebates that accrues to groups with diversity quotas and as such, many will seek to accept an international student partly for that purpose. The snag is, international there includes every country that is non-US so even Chinese and Indians fall under this category. But there is much more to accepting students than GRE and profile. Sometimes, it is just pure...luck.

Congratulations Bro...Your own better oooo

You are not alone bro. I am always eager to open every mail with the hope of seeing an admission/funding mail. The problem is not just securing admission but funding. Even as a PhD applicant, full funding is becoming harder to secure by the day so I can imagine how the most MSc applicants feel.

I received an early admission offer from University of Kansas in the third week of December so I guess my trepidation has been tempered a bit. What I am just waiting for is the funding mail. I was nominated for Engineering Dean Fellowship by my program. I am just waiting for the outcome. Once the result is out and I'm selected, I will accept the offer immediately. I'm not gonna wait for other schools. The long wait is wearing me out.

In another news, I just received an admission mail from Temple University over an hour ago. Good news of admission & funding waits us all!

The way I see It,it's like international students are given way less priority.Unless maybe for those who scored 340/340 and have a GPA of 4.0.If them let me vex, even if they admit me I will reject them grin cheesy grin

You are not alone bro! I applied to five schools. Ten person's have been admitted on gradcafe while two have been rejected. Mine is still awaiting decision. Same as the other four.

I check my inbox and spam at every moment I receive an email. I even had to unsubscribe from many other email alerts.

Gradcafe results and waiting section is now my most visited site. I don tire. Some of my schools deadline was Dec 15 till now no news from them.

For starters,100 words? Or you mean to say a thousand words. Please improve on your word counts o. During my application, I have learnt that the AWA score is very important in selecting candidates for fellowship so think about acing that part of the test too.

Hello everyone, i hope our day is going on well.

Please I would be writing GRE in the first week of February and I need tips for the verbal aspect of the test as it is my weak point. I have been following this thread for over 5months now and I have all the material on the Google drive shared on this thread. I have watched all magoosh VIDEOS for both the Quantitative and Verbal. So far I have learnt 100 words on the magoosh app(flashcard).

I took the ETS practise test 1 and my score was 162(Q) 143(V). Which is also the range of scores I have been getting on magoosh test practise. Around 158(Q) 146(V).

I just need some strategies to improve on the verbal aspect.

Your help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Weldone Scholastica16. I'm sure you'll be excellent there even with the workload.I am also positive you'll get a placement for summer.
Thank you for your encouragements and kind words. You have not forgotten this forum even with your tight schedule.

I must also add that formally the waiting period has begun as most Universities deadline has passed(Jan 15th).Let all FALL19 hopefuls gather for a month power crusade titled " Admissions must come with Full funding" featuring veteran 'pastors'. Note also that another powerful service will come up in another location to be announced later titled " No delay - Visa must be approved". Get ready people. Note: attendance is free, but God loves a cheerful giver grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin.

Have a nice day guys.
Scholastica16:
I know much has been said about top schools and programs in the past, but there is more to schooling here than just that. As much as possible (especially for those of you with more than 1 option) make sure to investigate the culture of the school as it relates to people from this part of the world or from different academic backgrounds. Some of those top schools are overwhelmingly unwelcoming to new intakes or have this smug and super-competitive aura about them. if you are not thick-skinned you will suffer. That smaller school with a kind PI may just be what you need to settle.

US education is not as easy as vaunted. There are certain things that can be draining. Presentations, Term papers, reports. And then the volume of homework. Many times getting good grades is about over-applying yourself rather being brainy even though being brainy helps.

In the past 4 months I have been applying for internships against summer. The feedbacks have been disconcerting to say the least, but we keep pushing. So far, I am certain I have made about 70+ applications with 20+ rejections. The essence of saying this is not to discourage anyone. I am just chronicling my experiences so that when the story changes, it will make for a good ending. There are some Nigerians that have gotten into Internship programs in top companies like Tesla, Cummins, Micron etc. In my little experience, having some sort of programming or coding skill makes a wealth of difference because that is the major skill that many companies look for amongst others. Having good extracurriculars, leadership experiences are also very useful.

It is important to also mention that some US citizens themselves have not secured internships regardless of the fact that, most of the rejections many Nigerians will face in the job search will be based on work authorization and citizenship. The good thing is, there are many many many job openings and once there is a will, there is a way.

Hello Spanishmario, you are highly welcome to the house. Please Start your journey by going through the thread from page 1 grin after which you might not have need for tips from anyone. But if you do ask for tips,it means it hasnt been given earlier.First Tip for you, dates are important on this thread, as you go through you will notice a pattern - around January ending to Late March peeps will be talking about admits and rejections, around July guys would have migrated to another thread for visa interviews, and the remaining months you will find concentrated discussions on the GRE. But in all you will find this thready really informative.
I wish you the best as I wish myself.

Just came across this thread, I’m planning on starting my journey by taking the GRE first. Would appreciate any tips from everyone in the house.

MasterforceII this is what we call sure profile and smart application(in ponpon's voice).
MasterforceII:
Nice that people are posting about their applications. Way to keep the thread lively and inspire fall2020 applicants and beyond. I remember the exploits of Scholastica16, drhopeful, femi132 et al and how reading their stories kept me going.

I applied to 9 schools for a mix of MS and PhD programs:

Virginia Tech (MS)
Purdue University (MS)
Auburn University (MS)
Colorado state university (MS)
University of Maryland (PhD)
University of Massachusetts (Ms/PhD)
University of Tennessee (PhD)
Iowa State university (PhD)
Rennsalear polytechnic institute (PhD)

Profile:
Program: Electrical Engineering
CGPA: 3.64/4.00
GRE: 163Q/158V/4
TOEFL: 104

I was a bit ambitious with my applications this year. Reason being that I have seen people with lesser profiles get admitted into these schools. I've put in my best and corresponded with professors in some schools. I'm hopeful that one of these schools provides admission and funding. I however have a contingency plan but I hope it doesn't come to that.

Oga Quoran, Oga Quoran..........How many times did I call you?
Hmmm...........Let me tell you one very important but mostly overlooked reson why some people are not posting it here or saying - It is simply because they have carried out an evaluation of the strenghts of their village people. If they have acertained that their village people's network has 10G where others that are posting are using 2G, they will just lock up and wait until they have landed in JFK beforere they post GRE,Admission,,Visa and PoE transcripts. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Hello people.......I just dey joke oooooo.......Make some people village people no go cross border enter my side o..

Well for me, I applied to about 6 Universities and None has given me Admission. All PhD. grin
1.Washington State University
2.Baylor University
3.Louisiana State University
4.University of South Carolina
5.Brown University
6.Tulane University
I'm still thinking of applying to more if need be... grin grin grin

GRE: 304
TOEFL: 108
UG GPA: 3.3/4
PG GPA: 3.68/4
Publications: NIL

Just praying for now for successful outcomes, also praying for blindness to my village people's eyes to this post, though I know their network is not too strong(just 2G)....and i'm using 6G grin grin grin grin grin grin
Cheers guys and Ladies......Las las we'll all be alright.

Hmmmmmmm..................Words from the mouth of a Sage.
Quoran:
Be hopeful. Many schools will start Graduate admission review this week especially for schools with December 15th/31st Deadline. You should hear from them from either next week up to the first week of February. Funding usually delay admission decisions. Also PhD admissions take a while to make a decision compared to MS. Just be hopeful.

Since I got into this system, I realised that many people apply to study in USA schools. So if you're chosen, God has definitely favored you. It is never a mean feat even if it is an averagely ranked school.

The Spring admit+funding story above isn't as sugar-coated as it appears (it's been summarized, don't want to bore you guys), there were times of extreme exhaustion/close to giving up on it all (e.g. after getting 307 in the GRE despite the intense prep, after contacting 5 Profs who you thoroughly read their publications and got no reply, etc) but it's all history now... Seems like it never happened in the first place (that's how it will be after getting it, so guys, VIM ON... God's gonna crown your efforts).

Thanks to the originator of this trend (Danjaninja), and all those who shared their stories/contributes in one way or the other. And to ponpon (Boss registered me for both exams), thanks.
