Like Sherlock5577 said , the school is competitive - spread your risks.Check other schools.I would like to say that your profile is competitive enough for the geosciences but then it depends on the University. Try take a look at medium or even the "low' schools. I'm surprised that Nigerians, even the ones that went to the so called Nigerian ivy league school still select US universities..when the 'lowest' US university has labs and equipment we haven't seen in our 'ivy leagues'...Pls guys look for research fit, lab fit, course deficiency 'make ups" and probably job prospects. The reason for all this school/study is to make ends meet and be happy in life...so why apply to universities that are ivy league or even low universities in the US just because you want study abroad.......Dont waste your time ,resources and energy.Think smart and apply smart.Good luck to us all.

Q150, V155, AWA 4.0; TOEFL 103/120
BSc 3.60/5.00 (3.31/4.0)- Geophysics
MSc 4.00/5.00 (3.36/4.0) - Geophysics
3 years research experience, 4 publications (3 lead author, 1 secondary author)

Who knows if this is competitive enough to get a PhD admit at UTexas, Austin (Geological sciences)?

Bro, based on your GRE score e get as e be oooo. But then do the work yourself, go to msinus.com and do alittle more research, most importantly get POI interest in you before applying. If you are a small OBO you can just shoot applications even without POI consent, you might get admitted with even funding. We have experiences like that here on this forum.

PS: Strong men are currently in the Lab I guess but they still find out time to reach here...lets hope they branch here during the holidays grin grin grin grin wink cheesy
danfad:
Good morning house, I need suggestion on safe schools I can send my application to. Below is my profile

B.Sc(Geology) - 3.86/5
M.Sc (Petroleum geosciences) - 4.84/5
4 years relevant experience in the petroleum industry
One publication on petroleum geochemistry
GRE..Verbal-143, Quanti - 149 and AW - 3.0

Course: PhD Geology or M.Sc in Environmental science or GIS (I am seriously considering a slight change in career path)
I was considering University of Nebraska@ Lincoln (POI not very certain due to my GRE score but still encouraged me to apply hoping other factors will be fully considered), Southern Illinios University@carbondale (Still yet to get a POI) and University of Texas @ ElPaso (Still yet to get a POI).

Any advice or suggestion on way forward. thanks

Good morning house, I got my first admit two days ago from Michigan Tech, though there's no funding at the moment, but I could reach out to faculty and they'll be offering funding letters around March/April. Funny enough, I got a reject from University of New Haven. undecided

D – Day. ( August 31, 2018)

• Usually, this is where people go on to elaborate at length. However, in my case it would surprise you to know I have little memory of what happened that day. I woke up feeling scared, worried and nervous. All kind of negative emotions one shouldn’t exhibit on test day. I struggled to even eat my breakfast. I figured that reading too many posts about GRE top scorers and having my eyes fixated on top school, plus friends and family high expectation led to the whole negative emotions I exuded.

Fast forward to the start of my test. VQVQV ( I prayed against this )

• AWA
The topics were straight forward and the argument presented had obvious flaws. And even though I am not fast at typing, I was able to come up with 5 paragraphs for each tasks ( my major mistake here was not saving up time to proof read).

Next up was Verbal.
My verbal experience was terrible. I couldn’t just get myself to stay focused. I was just glossing over the screen. I promised myself that on test day that I wouldn’t peep at the options, until I come up with an answer. I couldn’t adher to this. I totally forgot all my practice tests experiences. And I spent 50% of the time looking at the timer (worrying that time wasn’t enough). The comprehension were obviously incomprehensible. At some point I was totally lost in my thought. The TC and SE had not even a single unfamiliar Vocab, but comprehending the sentence was an issue here. At the end of the First verbal I knew I wouldnt do so well in the test.

Quantitative:
Now this section was funny in the sense that the questions were far easier than I had expected but I goofed up. For example, I spent 5 long minutes on question 1 ( if that wasn’t me abandoning 3 months of GRE home training and torrent of advice, I wonder what is) . The most annoying part is that, when my official scores came out, I discovered that even though I ended up answering that Q1 correctly, the victory was in every sense pyrrhic. Q1 difficulty level was 1 – easiest - , 5mins on an easy question. And the summary of what happened in question 1 is that I was being overly fussy. Reason being that, under the first 1mins I had gotten A as the answer (QC). But I wasn’t sure because I used plugging in method. So I spent another 2 mins trying to use algebra to confirm A. after 3mins of struggling I just had to mark and move on. At the end of the Section, I Still had 3 mins left. I still had to waste 2 out of the 3 mins on question 1 and my final answer was still A.

Now, you may be wondering why so much emphasis on Q1. The answer is not far fetch. That single question determined my mood, approach and pace in the whole section and inadvertently led to my score.

The other sections were just complete reiteration of the above. With my last verbal being worst off because of exhaustion. And by the last 10mins of test, my whole mind was on pressing the submit button and knowing my fate.

End of Test: I clicked submit.

Final score : 313 ( Q161 V152)

AWA 3.5 (whatever you do always spare time at the end to proof read and correct errors. you wouldn't want your grader to see " He it a boy". I'm sure that was my case, becuase I was certain about the contents of my essays. I expected 4.5+ self)

I was just there confused on what to do. The institution codes I had taken, hoping they would be moderate schools judging from my practice test scores, are now overly ambitious. So I just left the hall without sending scores to even a single school. Knowing fully well that I have to re-take the test.

It took me days to accept those scores ( or rather to reject those scores as a definition of my ability).

Well, there you have it. My GRE experience. I would have posted sooner, but I clearly wasn’t pleased with my scores initially. But right now I'm super grateful to God I survived, it could have been worse.

I hope prospective test takers learn a thing or two from my experience and I also hope my story end up having a happy ending. The aim is admission and funding and not to enhance your status amongst the Asians.

#Fall 2019 Yes We Can. Peace wink

Weldone bro.... But with all these long story and prep I was expecting 349.....lolz.... (na play ooo) ....Atleast people can use your write up to practice verbal.... Lolz

But sincerly,nice one... And congrats.
You have to put in your applications early..... I've learnt from here that.... Early birds MIGHT get the juicy corn o.... If you get my drift.

Hi all,
I'm a silent but ardent follower and reader of this thread.
i'm a very busy person so I didnt have all the time to prepare for my GRE and TOEFL.
GRE:
Preparation time : almost 3 months off and on cry
Scores:Q :152 V : 152 : AW :3.0\
Materials Used : All materials from nairaland.
Lesson Learnt: I didn't devote time for practice.I did only two PowerPrep tests,(not full tests). In summary my prep was awful.
TOEFL :
Preparation time: 1 week
SCORES :Reading:26 Listening: 28 Speaking : 26 Writing : 28
Materials Used : Notefull Videos
Lesson Learnt : No need to Study too much for TOEFL if you actually graduated from university and earned your degree.Just understand the exam setup.

GPA: UG: 3.3/4.0
PG (Msc): about 3.68/4.0

On Applications:
I cannot over emphasis what I've gained from this forum. It has been said time without number contact Profs that you hope to do research with.
With this in mind I contacted profs, some replied while some didn't. But fortunately for me even before applying, I can say I already have two profs that have accepted me already with funding I hope.(because this is the koko, and we discussed about it already).
On this note I wish all 2019 hopefulls all the best in this application round.

I hope to comment in the future that one of our veterans here came to pick me up at JFK..(winks)

(Make Una no vex oooo, before people go bombard me say i no come post here since..lol...I no get time ni o...and i dont have excuse to give for not posting......so my apologies. Thanks for accepting my apologies in advance)

Thanks to : PonPon,Quoran,Drhopeful, cutemorgan, thegrandchemist, ndawe and all of you who have commented or given useful advise on this thread.

Possible, but the tricky thing about bench mark is that there is a rare possibly that no one meets your criteria or you end up with too few people to meet your target (for example they may have a quota for female intake or people of Niger Delta origin and they end up with no one from these criteria meeting this benchmark). The problem is when you are too quick to send reject and then later realize you don't have anything to work with, then what next?

HR are always flexible and understand playing with numbers and probability. They also understand that these test and accessment are not perfect so they would rather have 10 people that almost meet their criteria interview for 2 positions than just 3 people to work with. The key thing is making sure you have enough candidate else you run into problems.

Well, all of this is just conjecture, it's very possible I am wrong.
You are a very intelligent being. Thanks for educating people. There are somethings Some of us cannot do or say here.
