Update for tomorrow night.

Chapter 14.

Rose looked at the man sitting opposite her and wondered what she could do to get his attention. She had noticed him for three months now. He came in at eight-twenty every weekday, sat at the same table, worked on his laptop for three hours, left to get lunch at one-thirty , returned by two-fifteen, read a novel till three and left at exactly three-zero-five. He was always on time, no straying to the left or right. No matter the weather, he stuck to his schedule. She had never been so bothered about getting someone’s attention. She never really liked it but yet she wanted more than anything for this guy to notice her.

Her first step had been to sit in his seat. She smiled as she remembered the flustered look on his face when he came in that morning. He took the seat in front of her while mumbling his dissatisfaction. After grumbling for two minutes, he kept mute and became detached as if he were on an astral projection. Wheels and cogs whirred and turned deliriously as she thought. She hit his foot with hers. She mumbled an unapologetic sorry but the guy still stared at his book like it was the key to heaven. She sighed and resigned herself to studying his features, something she did every day.

She glanced at her watch- two-fifty-six. Another day gone and she didn’t know his name. No one in the library did. Not even the librarians. On his temporary membership card, he was registered as Lawrence, F. D. She always played guessing games on what his name could be. She settled for Frank. She exhaled and wondered what her friends would say if they saw her begging for the attention of a Nigerian like a lovesick puppy. She caught herself and laughed. Like she wasn’t one too, at least not by birth anyway. She was born an American and she was thankful for it.

Ose willed the time to go faster. He had returned to his freelance writing after he almost consumed himself with grief. He had loved Bibiana with his all and watching the life seep out of her was something he knew he’d never forget. Chief Badmus should have order his goons to finish him off. Felicia had practically begged him as she returned to her husband to move on. He promised to and took steps in that direction but the grief lingered on some days worse than others. He fought the urge to leave before three. Today, he was having his grief badly. The scent of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Eau De Parfum, Bibiana's favorite perfume kept wafting into his nostrils and nostalgia gripped him. He had bought her that perfume to impress her. She loved it and it became her favorite and she wore it everyday till she died. He remembered how the fragrance mixed with the coppery smell of blood as he held her body close when she died. He missed her smile, her antics, her sensuality, the way she drawled his name whenever he was mad.
He glanced at the clock on the wall. He sighed in relief and started packing his things.

“Excuse me.”, the lady in front of him called sweetly and smiled. She hoped her accent would get him to look at her.

“Good afternoon.”, he answered coldly while folding his laptop charger.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Pardon my lack of manners. Good afternoon, I’m Rose.”, she said and extended her hand for a shake. He ignored it and continued counting his books to make sure he had everything he borrowed back.

“Ok. Um, two of my friends want to start using the library’s services but need a referral. I was told by the guys at circulation and the attendant up front and she said you’ve been a user for three years. I was wondering if you could sign their referral funds.”, she said.

“I’m so sorry. I can’t.”, he answered holding his breath and slung his bag across his shoulder. “I have to go. Excuse me.”, he put curtly and made his way to leave at exactly three-zero-five.

“Can you be human for a second?”, she said as she latched onto his arm.

“Miss, you’re suffocating me. I can’t help you or your friends. I apologize. Please let go of my arm.”, he fired looking into her eyes for the first time.

She let him go. “At this rate, you’ll die alone.”, she mumbled under her breath but he heard her.

“She already left me. I can’t wait to join her.”, he said to her hearing and left the library.
Rose palmed her face, hating herself.

He’s grieving.

It dawned on her then that he’d never notice her because there was already a woman who filled his heart and mind. She smiled in empathy wondering if she was his wife or girlfriend.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

She stared at the clock then the door than the clock again in panic. This was the third day he hadn’t shown up. She wondered if she had driven him to 'join her.’ She and her uncensored mouth.’ She’d never forgive herself if she was the motivation behind his suicide. The clock struck eleven and her panic struck limit. She stood up from her chair like she sat on a porcupine and made her way to circulation office.

“Hello, goodmorning.”, she greeted the middle-aged woman who was filing library cards.

“Good morning.”, the woman answered without facing her.

So rude.

She shrugged it off and asked, “Sorry to disturb you, there’s a reader here who hasn’t been to the library in days….”

“So?”, the woman asked still filing.

“He’s a regular here. He clocks in everyday by eight-twenty and leaves by three-zero-five everyday. He's about five ten, broad shoulders, caramel skin, black curly hair. It’s cut in a punk, or I think that’s what it is. He has expressive, coffee black eyes and his nose is kind of a snub nose, you know, like the kind on the Manchester United player.”, she described hastily.

The woman turned and raised an eyebrow. “I don’t watch football.” She was desperate. She wasn’t heading anywhere. She then remembered his name.

“His name is Lawrence, F. J.”, she chipped in as the woman began to turn back to the filing cabinet.

“Don’t you think you should have started with that?”, the woman sassed. “Why are you so concerned?”, she asked standing akimbo.

“The last time he was here, he seemed out of sorts. While he was leaving, he mumbled something about a girl leaving him and he wanting to join her.”, she lied by omission. “Im just worried he might have joined her.”, she said dramatically.

“Calm down.”, an older woman said as she came out of the file room. “Fejirose cancelled his subscription for the Zaria live three days ago. He claimed he no longer found it suitable for his needs.”

Hi people, how has your week been? Mine's been tumultuous but God is keeping me above the waves.

Ok, I want to air my mind. This story is dear to me. It has one of my favorite characters (no, it's not Tinu. You're yet to meet her). I don't know if you've ever gotten to that point in a telenovela where you feel "abeg, what are they even doing?" and you leave it for a couple of weeks and when you come back you're like "when did all these happen?"
This is that point.

This is my final appeal to please and please be patient. I know we've only been together for roughly a month but accord me an iota of trust. You've loved this story once, don't give up on it( it's saying something, don't give up on it. grin grin(

Jokes apart now. The next three to four updates might not be gengen attention-grabbing, even-take-your-phone-to-the-bathroom(I mean bathroom like bathroom bathroom not toilet. I've done that before.) suspenseful but they will explain a lot of things that will happen in the other two books of the trilogy.

Yes, Ocean of Secrets is a trilogy. This is THE EBB. So if you don't want to be confused in the other two installments abeg, please, e dakun, biko, por favor, s'il vous plait kindly follow me. It's going to be worth it in the end.

Thank you for reading my rant. I'll update by tomorrow night or Friday morning. I have a test tomorrow.

P.S. You're amazeballs kiss kiss kiss

Ok. Thanks for pointing that out.

I understand but give me time.

Everything is to lead up to Dele and Tinu's reunion. Tinu claims to love Chris or she loves Chris, she can't just go back to Dele like that.

Dele can't just sit and wait for who knows when for Tinu to realize who knows what. Like one of my favorite movie characters said, there'll always be embers remaining that can easily be reignited, when you truly love someone. Tinu and Dele are oblivious to these embers.

Just relax and chill for me. These things take time unless you want me to do a sloppy job.

“I realized I never really thanked you for telling me about Chris’s proposition. Thank you, Dele.”, Tinu said.

“There’s no need to thank me. I just did what I felt was right.”, he answered. “So how are you?”, he asked and held her hand.

“I’ve been better but things are looking up. I’ve decided to give Chris another chance. He said it was a mistake and I love him. Love forgives all.”, she mentioned and withdrew her hand.

“Good.”, he said and she raised an eyebrow.

He laughed and said, “What? It’s good. I’m happy for you. Chris deserves a chance and the twins love him. It’s good you’re getting back together. I’ve even began dating again.”

“Wow, that’s great. Who is she?”, she said in excitement.

“Seyífúnmi. We met at a tech entrepreneurs summit in University of Ìbàdàn. Turns out we’re practically neighbours. She stays in mum’s….”, he started saying and then stopped. “Tinu, I…”

“It’s ok. How’s mum doing?”, she asked with a shaky smile on her face. She had once loved that woman as much as she loved her own biological mother.

“She’s great.”, he said softly.

“Mummy!”, Tóminí shouted as she ran into the living room. “I’m done packing. I finished before Temi. Can we go and see Daddy now? Please!!.”, she babbled panting.

“Haven’t I told you to greet your father whenever you see him?”, Tinu scolded.

“Sorry mummy. G'afternoon.”, she mumbled hastily.

“Oluwatomini, if you don’t greet properly I will report you to your daddy.”, Tinu threatened.

“Goodafternoon, sir.”, the little girl greeted and knelt. Dele forced himself not to laugh.

“Good, now go to your room and wait.”, she instructed. The girl reluctantly got up and left. Waiting was obviously not one of her strong suits.

“Wow. I thought girls feared their mums.”, Dele teased.

“This is an exception to the general rule. That girl loves Chris so much that disobeying him or getting in his wrong book is a total no-no for her. I don’t even understand it.”, Tinu explained.

“Well, I best be leaving. Seems you guys have a lot of things left to do.”, he said and stood up.

“Dele, thanks for everything.”, she said and stood. “I’m really grateful.”, she said and hugged him.

“It’s no big deal. We’re friends, right?”, he said and released her.

“Friends. In that case, I want all the juicy details about Seyifunmi.”, she announced eagerly.

“Sure thing.”, he said and she saw him to his car.

“Bye, Tinu.”

“Bye, Dele. Don’t forget to call me to give me gist.”, she hollered as the engine revved to life.

“It’s gist that will kill you.”, Dele replied and drove off. Tinu smiled, happy to have gotten closure about her marriage to Dele. The one thing she learnt from it was to forgive and to accept. She couldn’tbe another Dele in her relationship with Chris.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

Tinu let the twins run into the house screaming. Tóminí ran up the stairs squealing 'Daddy' while Temi went into the downstairs study. Tinu smiled because she alone knew where her husband would be. She could bet her life that he’d be in the garden. When they were newlyweds, they spent all their leisure in the garden. Chris would sit against a pride of Barbados tree and she’d sit in between his legs and just stay there and relish being in each other’s arms. Tinu handed her handbag to the maid beside her and ran herself into the garden. She had missed her husband. She met him underneath the tree and smiled again.

“I thought one could hear their screams out here.”, she said casually. He jerked.in surprise and turned to face her. She smile broadened on seeing his reaction.

“I thought you were never coming back.”, he muttered.

“Whatever gave you that impression?”, she asked slyly and prowled towards him sultrily.

“You told me to get a life.”, he answered.

“I never said I wasn’t going to be in it.”, she retorted and moved closer to him till they were barely an inch apart.

“I've missed you.”, he said and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

“Me too. I love you, Chris. More than Katrina and her child and more than any mistake you might make. You’re it for me. My Romeo, my Prince Charming, my Mark Anthony, my Abelard. You’re the love of my life, the father of my children, my husband. Those titles mean a lot to me.”, she said and kissed him. “That said, if this happens again, rather than leave, I will f***ing castrate you and feed your balls to the first dog I find.”, she promised.

“I hope I’ll never have to hold you to that promise.”, he answered and hugged her.

Who is this new antagonist in the story huh
Make them leave Tinu jare.
After hearing Chris's side of the story I'll have to say Tinu should just forgive him, the Oduah's love her and her kid's like their own, it's not about the inheritance but about the love.
Definitely she's hurting bcs of the betrayal but the fact remains Chris truly loves her.....Kapish cool
Who said anything about her being new? grin grin grin cheesy grin

Ok, now for a little nibbles. I haven't gotten around to writing. Tests are glaring at me in the face and yours truly has been sleeping like a pregnant woman. God will save my soul. God will not let my village people dance soapy over my matter.

“No, I won’t. Please I need you. I made a mistake and I’m sorry. I was drunk and I didn’t know what I was doing.”, he begged and rushed to embrace her. “Tinu, don’t leave me. Please.”

“Chris, please let me go.”, she said stoic.

“No. Don’t leave me. I’ll die without you. Please, I’m sorry please forgive me.”, he cried like baby.

“Chris, stop this.”, she scolded.

“Tinu, hit me, call me names, fucking castrate me but don’t leave me. Please. I beg you.”, he said crying.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

Tinu sighed as she left the kitchen. She heard her phone ring for the tenth time. She was going to give Chris a piece of her mind. He had his son and baby mama, why was he disturbing her? She saw the caller ID and her heart broke. It was Ajiri.

“Hello.”, she croaked.

“Tinu. Oh my God! How are you doing? I’m so sorry. I’ve been a terrible friend. I saw a video on a gossip website and I just had to check if you were alright.”, Ajiri gushed in concern over the phone. “I should have been there for you. I’m sorry.”

“I'm actually glad you weren’t. I learnt to be strong and independent and that I’ve only got myself and my children. They need me to be strong.”, Tinu answered.

“Tinu, I’m sorry.”, Ajiri apologized.

“There’s nothing to be sorry for. I’m not being scornful or sarcastic but you warned me to give it a little more time. I didn’t listen, I can’t come crying now that I didn’t get a fair shake from my marriage to Chris. That’s a bygone. How are you and the boys?”, Tinu said.

Ajiri sighed knowing she was in no position to push. “Fine. I’m expecting now. I hope it’s a girl.”

“That’s great to hear.”, Tinu said smiling. There was a long awkward silence. “I should go.”, Tinu said.

“Ok. Bye.”, Ajiri greeted.

“Bye.”, Tinu answered and hung up. A pang of jealousy welled up in her. If only she had gotten pregnant again, then maybe Chris wouldn’t have… She stopped herself from delving into such thoughts. She had bigger problems like how to explain to the twins why they were living in a different place. Tóminí was already clamoring for her dad and asking too many questions.

Her phone rang again. This time it was Monique. She smiled. Monique had been calling everyday to talk to the twins. At first, when she started calling, she was reluctant to pick her calls. When she eventually did, the sixteen year old affirmed that she had no business with her brother and his infidelity. All she wanted was to talk to her niece and nephew. Occasionally, she gave the phone to Mrs. Oduah, who more often than not begged her to return home.

“Hey, pretty girl.”, Tinu greeted.

“Tinu, please don’t hang up.”, Chris begged in panic.

“You have got to be kidding me.”, she exclaimed.

“You’ve been in touch with mum, Monique and Margaux but you won’t talk to me. Why?”, Chris asked.

She scoffed and replied, “I’m not so petty as to sever ties with them. They did me no wrong. My issue is with you.” Tinu told him exactly what Mrs. Oduah told her the first time they spoke again.

“Then let’s settle this. You just left the room that night like a thief after promising not to leave.”, he lamented.

“Chris, I didn’t promise you anything. Besides, promises are a sham. You of all people know that.’
“God, you’re exasperating.”, he sighed.

“I’m exasperating? You’re the no good, two-timing, backstabbing, can’t-keep-it-in-his-pants, cheating son of a b- gun.”, she hurled with venom.

“Good, at least you’re saying something.”, he said ecstatic.

“Get a life and leave me the hell alone.”, she sighed and rubbed her neck.

“Tinu, sleeping with Katrina is something I regret. I was wasted after my stag party. I woke up with a hooker. In a hurry to get to church on time, I panicked and left. I didn’t realise she was the one. A couple of months after our wedding, she came to visit me in the office. I wanted so much to tell you. But I was ashamed. Then, the miscarriage happened. I didn’t want it to seem like I was rubbing it in your face. I just didn’t want to hurt you ever.”, Chris explained.

“Look, I have to go.”, she said and hung up.
She wondered if she should just sweep it all under the carpet. A part of her wanted to forgive him, another didn’t want to give him a chance to hurt her again. She pulled out a chair and sat at the dinning table. Couldn’t she just have a normal life? One without too much drama? Just a simple uneventful one. You know the Simpsons kind of life. No super model exes with a vendetta, no husbands with a strange idea of protection. No miscarriages. Just a simple life. One she might get bored of but one that didn’t drain her emotionally.

She just wanted a stable marriage. If she left Chris that would make her a two-time divorcee. Not a great trend and example for her children. All she wanted was a marriage like a parents'. She sighed and wondered if her dad ever gave her mum reason to want to leave. If he ever, she most definitely did not act on it. God, being a parent was so hard. She couldn’t just make decisions on a whim, she had to factor in Tèmí and Tóminí.
She picked up her phone and did what she thought was the best thing for her children.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

Katrina looked at the man and woman before her and scoffed. When she got the text, she assumed it was a reporter or some women’s rights activist. But then activist would call and a reporter would expressly say he was a reporter. The text just said, “We can help you get your son back. If you’re interested, come to this address….”

“Look, I’ve listened to all you have to say. How does this help me? I want my son and I want Chris. Going after that bitch isn’t going to help me get him. Chris is crazy about her. No matter how much she pushes him away, he still loves her. His love for her is nothing like he felt for me. I can see it. So how on Earth am I supposed to get him back?”, she said.

“You’ve given him something that Tinu never did.”, the woman answered.
“Are you like kidding me or something? The child never brought him closer to me. I even saw more of Chris before I pulled that stunt. Now he has Chris, there’s no reason for him to see me.”, Katrina asserted.

“Leave that to me. You just be available. If you follow my instructions, you’ll have Chris and your son.”, the man assured.

“Why should I trust you?”, she asked skeptically.

“Because I hate Tinu and I want her to suffer.”, the woman spat like a viper.

When she saw the realization in Tinu’s eyes, she smirked and picked up her son. “Chris, aren’t you going to say hi to Chris junior?”, she asked raising her voice for everyone to hear.

“Keep your voice down!”, Margaux whisper-yelled and stood up. Everyone on the table followed suit except for Tinu, who was trying to calm herself.

“Young lady, let’s go in and discuss this civilly.”, Mr. Oduah said.

“No! I am tired of hiding. She should be the one hiding. She can’t give him a son yet she’s the proud wife. I’m going to speak my mind here and now.”, Katrina shouted and silence followed as all the guests wanted to hear what was going down.

“Katrina, shut up!”, Chris bellowed and she kept mute. “Daddy!”, the boy called and stretched out his arms. The boy’s voice was what drew tears out of Tinu’s eyes.

“Why are you here? What do you want?”, he asked.

“I just want you to publicly claim your son. That’s all.”, Katrina said meekly.

“And if he does that, you get the hell out of here?”, Tinu spoke as she stood and turned to face the home wrecker.

“You should stay out of this!”, Katrina advised.

“This is her business.”, Chris clarified.

“So?”, Tinu asked.

“Yes.”, Katrina said defeated.

“It's settled then. Chris, claim him!”, Tinu said to him.

“Tinu..”, he asked in confusion.

“Do it.” Tinu said through clenched teeth. Chris sighed and claimed the boy.

“Good, he’s done it. Now, get out of here.”, Tinu said calmly. Katrina turned to leave but Tinu called her back.

“Katrina, you can leave Chris junior. Chris has claimed him. He belongs with his father now.”, Tinu asserted. Monique made her way to collect the boy from Katrina after Margaux nudged her to.

“No! You can’t take my son away from me.”, she cried and murmurs started.

“I thought that was what you wanted.”, Mr. Oduah bellowed causing her to whimper and shake in fear. Monique used the opportunity to pry the boy out of her arms. Katrina wanted to snatch the baby back but Daniel, Margaux's husband became an impregnable barrier.

“Chris, you can’t do this to me. I’ll fight for custody.”, she roared like a wounded lion.

“Then, we’ll see you in court.”, Chris said.

Suddenly, two security men appeared. “Good, escort this young lady out.”, he ordered. The attention of the guests shifted back to their food after Katrina was escorted out. Chris and his family looked nervously from Tinu to the boy crying for his mother.

“Tinu…”, Mrs Oduah and Chris called at the same time.

“Sorry, I have to use the restroom. I’ll be right back.”, she said.

Chris tried to hold her but his father stopped him. “Leave her, Chris. She needs it.”, he said softly.

“Monique, bring the boy into the house.”, Mrs. Oduah said and left the table with her daughter and newly found grandson in tow.

“I can’t believe you, Chris.”, Margaux spat in disgust.

“Margaux, it’s ok.”, Daniel whispered and held her hand.

She withdrew her hand from her husband's grip and fired on. “That boy should be about two years old. That means you slept with her around the time you got married. How could you? Dad drilled you to make sure Tinu was what you wanted. You insisted she was and then you do this. You disgust me. I used to look up to you but now I’m embarrassed to be related to you.” She hurled her words at him and stomped her napkin on the table. “Daniel, let’s go home.”, she told her husband.

✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴✴

Tinu sat on the bed staring into space. The boy was either two or three which meant Chris slept with her while they were together. She tried not to cry. She wouldn’t cry. She had to be strong. No, she wasn’t strong. Tears fell uncontrollably and she screamed and sobbed. She couldn’t believe Chris could do that. She felt like she didn’t know him anymore. She looked up when she heard the door open and she saw him. Heavier sobs left her.

“Please, Chris. Go away. Please. I won’t be responsible for my actions.”, she threatened.

“Tinu, please.”, he said and moved closer to the bed.

“Stay away from me.”, she screamed and he stopped. “You have a son now. You don’t need me anymore. You should be with him. He’s your flesh and blood. He needs you. Go to him and leave me here to relish my stupidity. Ajiri warned me but I was so blind. She told me you were to good to be true, that you were a devil I didn’t know. I thought she was not happy for me but now I realize she was just looking out for me.”

“I mean, why should I feel hurt. I did the same to Dele. Karma’s struck. I shouldn’t be a sore loser.”, she said sniffling and wiped her tears.

She smiled and looked up at him. “Chris, you have a son. I’m happy for you. I really am. Now you don’t have to bother about my children. You have an Oduah to inherit from you. My purpose here has been exhausted. She’s way prettier than I am. She’d look well by your side on Forbes Africa's new issue cover.”, she spited.

She stood and smiled again. “Here’s my RSVP for the wedding. I’m unavoidably absent.”, she said congenially.

“Tinu, I’m not getting married to her. I only want you.”, Chris said and moved closer to her.

“I don’t want to stay married to you. Not with the emotional rollercoaster we’ve been on. I want out. Please.”, she pleaded like she was being tortured. She removed her wedding band and engagement ring and stretched it out to him. “Take it, please. Marriage isn’t for me. I get that now. Please Chris set me free.”, she begged.
