The Federal Government on Thursday said the decision to fix the maximum price of petrol at N145 per litre despite the liberalisation of the product’s importation was meant to protect Nigerians.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma, said this while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was asked why the government would still put a peg on the price when he had already thrown the market opened for individuals or corporate bodies to source for forex and import the product.

But Udoma explained that the decision was taken to protect Nigerians from private operators who might want to be charging roof top prices.

He said the measure was to be in place until the market stabilises.

He expressed the conviction that once the market stabilises, the price of petrol would be lower than the current N145 per litre peg.

He said, “The price ceiling is a short time measure to protect Nigerians before the market stabilises.

“This is because it is possible for private operators to take price to any level.

“We however expect it to stabilise, and once that is achieved, the price will still be lower than that N145.”

A hospital in Boston has become the first in the US to perform a successful penis transplant, doctors said, calling the operation "a surgical milestone".

Thomas Manning, 64, received the donated organ three years after his penis was amputated due to penile cancer.

He is the third man worldwide to have had the experimental surgery performed.

The patient is expected to regain normal urination and sexual function in the next few months.

The 15-hour operation took place earlier this month at Massachusetts General Hospital and involved more than 50 doctors from many departments including urology, psychiatry, plastic surgery, and several others.

Although penile injuries are not always fatal, "the psychological aspects of such an injury can be overwhelming" hospital officials said in a press release.

Mr Manning hopes that by speaking publically about his experience he will remove the stigma of genital injury and inspire other men to remain hopeful about recovery.

"Don't hide behind a rock", he told the New York Times who first reported the story.

Another patient at the hospital is due to receive a transplant as soon as a donor becomes available. His penis was destroyed in a car accident.

The first successful penis transplant was performed in South Africa in 2015 on a man who had complications following a traditional circumcision ceremony. He later went on to father a child.

In 2006 a Chinese man who received the world's first penis transplant decided after two weeks to reverse the transplant.

Doctors removed the donated penis following a "severe psychological problem" experienced by him and his wife.

Dr Curtis Cetrulo, who led the surgical team in Boston, says that performing penis transplants may help to prevent suicides and could even be considered "life-saving".

He also said that doctors hope to use the technique on wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Victims of penis and genital injuries, known as genitourinary injuries, usually suffer in private with depression and embarrassment - something that Mr Manning hopes he can change following today's announcement.

In the hospital statement, Mr Manning wrote: "Today I begin a new chapter filled with personal hope and hope for others who have suffered genital injuries.

"In sharing this success with all of you, it's my hope we can usher in a bright future for this type of transplantation."

I won’t succumb to Tompolo’s blackmail —Ayiri

WARRI—EX-MILITANT leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, yesterday, cautioned that the current siege to Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State and manhunt for him by the military would not guarantee the desired peaceful atmosphere for uninterrupted oil exploration activities by the Federal Government.

Meanwhile, Itsekiri leader and Niger Delta activist, Chief Ayiri Emami, insisted, yesterday, that he would not capitulate to the intimidation of Tompolo.

Responding to comment against him by Tompolo, who accused him of fabricating lies against him, Emami said: “Whatever I am saying is the truth. It is the right thing I am saying.”

Tompolo, in a statement, said he was dismayed at the nonstop siege to Gbaramatu Kingdom and manhunt for him by both the Federal Government and Nigerian military under the guise of looking for members of Niger Delta Avengers, despite his numerous statements that he had nothing to do with the militant group.

He berated Itsekiri leader, Chief Ayiri Emami and others for allegedly giving bogus information about him, saying: “It baffles me that the Nigerian military has refused to believe me that I am not part of the group and its activities as contained in several media statements.

“I am obviously a victim of circumstances in this matter because of my case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. How can I resort to destruction of oil facilities because of those trumped-up charges against me by EFCC, when my lawyers are already challenging the faulty process of legal service on me?

“If not for the common insinuation that the Nigerian judiciary is on trial, why would my case with the EFCC become the greatest issue in Nigeria today when there are so many important things to talk about?

“I am greatly touched and disappointed with the manner the Nigerian government and the military are being arm-twisted by the unfounded claims of Ayiri Emami and others that I am behind the Niger Delta Avengers group when there is no single proof to back the claim.

“May I once again point out that Ayiri Emami and others accusing me of the destruction of oil facilities in parts of the Delta State are simply looking for relevance, recognition and pipeline surveillance contracts. If anyone doubts what I am saying, they should find out from the GMD and Minister for State for Petroleum because Ayiri and his likes have been troubling the Minister for pipeline surveillance contracts for some time now.”

Reacting, Chief Emami said: “If I am lying, why did Delta State Government set up an Advocacy Committee to stop pipeline vandalism in the creeks of the state? Who is the committee, headed by the deputy governor, going to meet in the creeks? Is it Itsekiri militants or Ijaw militants?”
