Pictures of a former Nigerian soldier are trending online following the killing of over 100 soldiers recently by Boko Haram insurgents in Metele, Guzamala Local Government Area, Borno state last Sunday evening. 

According to an online report, the ex-soldier who hails from Mbano local government area of Imo state, decided to join the army few years ago and was heartbroken after seeing some of colleagues and friends killed in the forest while fighting terrorists. 

The soldiers have been complaining of being equipped with inferior weapons which is causing the deaths of so many troops.

The young man decided to leave the military and search for greener pastures abroad where he is currently based. 

His pictures surfaced online recently as he looks unrecognisable to when he was in the military. 

The number of soldiers who were killed during the recent Boko Haram attack has reportedly increased to 118.

While responding to reports in the media, the Nigerian Army issued a statement saying that the number of casualties published on social media is false.

The presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has lamented the killing of soldiers fighting Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, saying the incident does not speak well of the country’s internal security apparatus.

She also commiserated with families of the deceased, while expressing wonder at why it took the military about a week to confirm the incident.

Ezekwesili in a statement on Sunday challenged the military authorities and the Commander-in-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari, to prove that they haven’t failed the nation’s soldiers.

While commiserating with families of the deceased, she suggested that the fallen soldiers must not be deprived of their honour.

According to her, many questions were begging for answers with the recent killings of soldiers.

She asked the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to “publish the names and authentic figures of fallen soldiers for Nigerians to know the extent of damage and for record purposes.”

Ezekwesili said, “There are pertinent questions that the Federal Government and the military need to answer.

“How did this latest in a series of killing of our soldiers in front line of battle catch our country off-guard?

“Don’t we think the official line that the Presidency and military have been pushing on the state of the terrorism war is endangering our soldiers and nation?

“Can the government be more honest on the challenges it appears to be facing in prosecuting the war?

“It is no longer acceptable for our heroes to die and not be accorded the honour of gallantry.

“The FG and the military must accord full military burial rites to the fallen soldiers and also publish the list of others who have died and had been buried discretely in recent times without giving the Nigerian people the opportunity to celebrate their gallantry.

“The Federal Government should immediately take measures to protect and preserve our soldiers, military establishments, our people and territory to avoid further deaths.

“It is time for a review of current operational strategy being used to prosecute the war. It is also high time that our Intel (intelligence unit) was revamped.

“The Federal Government must take measures to assess the failure of leadership of the Service Chiefs — as performance, accountability and consequence have been missing for far too long and must now change.”

She subsequently advised the military to improve on its intelligent gathering, saying that would be key to defeating the Boko Haram insurgency.

I still can not for the life of me understand why the mere mention of IPOB engenders so much hatred and vile comments from other ethnic groups. I mean if Igbos are the problems with Nigeria like some have falsely asserted, then why would they [other ethnicities] be upset when the same people want to be on their own? It defies logic and common sense. If a couple in a marriage has come to the conclusion that there's no more love between them and the relationship has become so toxic, assuming the wife wants a divorce, there's absolutely no reason the husband should object or wants the relationship to continue in its toxic state. This is real INSANITY! So, to all those whose mental derangement syndrome flares up on the mere mention of IPOB, I say, "You can't eat your cake and have it."

Members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Nnewi Division, Friday, clashed at the popular Nkwo Nnewi Market.

At least, one police officer and one member of the pro Biafran group were killed in the clash.

Members of the pro Biafra group were at Nnewi to drive home their stance of boycott of the 2019 election in the south east, except a date was fixed for a referendum to determine freedom for the people of the zone.

The protesters numbering over 2,000 stormed the market, with each member waving the Biafran flag, and chanting ‘no referendum, no election’.

The group moved round, telling Igbo people in the market not to participate in the 2019 general election unless the FG heed their demand and conduct referendum.

Trouble, however, started when police operatives arrived the scene in three hilux vans and tried to stop IPOB activities.

Members of the group were said to have first pounced on the police officers, destroying their vans and leaving two officers in the pool of their blood.
