Food / Carrot Cake Loaf by miniming: 5:15am On Nov 08, 2020
Carrot cake loaf

Ingredients

For the carrot cake
140ml/4¾fl oz vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing
2 free-range eggs
200g/7oz light brown sugar
300g/10½oz grated carrot (grated weight)
100g/3½oz raisins
75g/2½oz pecans or walnuts, chopped (optional)
180g/6oz self-raising flour
1 pinch salt
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
½ tsp mixed spice
For the orange cream cheese icing
200g/7oz full-fat cream cheese, chilled
50g/1¾oz butter, at room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
50g/1¾oz icing sugar, sifted
1 orange, zest only

Method

Preheat the oven to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 2. Oil and line a 900g/2lb loaf tin (approximately 13x23cm/5x9in) with baking paper.

For the carrot cake, beat the eggs in a large bowl, then add the oil, brown sugar, grated carrot, raisins and chopped nuts.

Sift in the remaining cake ingredients and mix using a wooden or large metal spoon until well combined.

Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf tin, smooth the surface and bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool in the tin for about 5 minutes before removing. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

For the icing, beat the cream cheese and butter together in a bowl until well combined. Add the vanilla extract, icing sugar and orange zest and mix until the icing is smooth and thick. Using a palette knife, spread the icing evenly over the cooled cake, dipping the knife into a bowl of hot water if the icing is hard to spread out. Cut into slices to serve.

Food / Hasselback Potatoes by miniming: 5:04am On Nov 06, 2020
Hasselback potatoes

Is it a roastie? Is it a jacket spud? Is it a big round chip? No – it’s a hasselback potato, crisp on the outside, soft in the centre, looks posh but is easy to make and perfect with steak, chicken or fish.

Ingredients
½ tsp dried thyme, rosemary or mixed herbs
½ tsp flaked sea salt
½ tsp coarsely ground black pepper
3 tbsp sunflower, vegetable or olive oil, plus extra for greasing
8 small–medium potatoes, each one approx. 75g/2¾oz, scrubbed (ideally, all-rounders or floury potatoes)
small knob of butter, approx. 15g/½oz (optional)
Recipe tips
Method
Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lightly oil a baking tray. Mix the herbs, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Pour the oil into a second bowl.

Place two wooden spoons or chopsticks on a chopping board, about 5cm/2in apart. Place the potatoes one at a time between the handles. Using a sharp knife with a thin blade, cut the potatoes very thinly and vertically almost all the way through – the knife will stop slicing when it meets the spoons. Each slice should be a little narrower than a pound coin.

As you prepare each potato, add it to the oil and turn to coat, then add to the seasoning mix and rub all over the potato, making sure a little of the seasoning mix gets in between the slices.

Place the potato on the baking tray, cut-side up. Prepare the remaining potatoes in the same way. Drizzle any remaining oil over the potatoes and bake for 40 minutes.

Take the tray out of the oven and dot each of the potatoes with a little butter, then bake for a further 10 minutes, or until golden, crisp and tender. Check for tenderness with the point of a knife or the tip of a skewer. (If you don’t want to use butter, cook the potatoes for around 50 minutes in total.) Serve immediately.

Choose similar-sized small potatoes so they cook at the same time. Ideally, choose all-rounder or floury potatoes, such as Maris Piper. New or waxy potatoes will work but the texture will be firmer.

You can use a deep wooden spoon to slice the potatoes. Place a potato into the bowl of the spoon, slice down through the potato and the knife will stop where it meets the edge of the spoon without cutting all the way through.

Food / Vegan Thai Green Curry by miniming: 5:02am On Nov 04, 2020
Vegan Thai green curry

This vegan Thai green curry is quick and easy to make, and packed with flavour and fragrance to give you a real taste of Thailand.

Ingredients
For the Thai green curry paste
2 lemongrass stalks, tough outer leaves removed
5 green chillies
thumb-sized piece fresh root ginger (or galangal root), peeled
½ lime, juice only
3 garlic cloves, peeled
2 shallots, peeled
1 tsp ground cumin
4 fresh coriander stalks (optional)
For the curry
1 tsp olive oil
200g/7oz firm tofu, cut into 3cm/1¼in cubes
1 large shallot, sliced
1.2 litres/2 pints vegetable stock
200ml/7fl oz coconut milk
1 tsp brown sugar
3cm/1¼in fresh root ginger, peeled and grated
200g/7oz dried rice noodles
4 Tenderstem broccoli stalks
50g/1¾oz beansprouts
salt (optional)
To garnish
1 green chilli, thinly sliced
4 fresh basil or Thai basil sprigs
½ lime, cut in half
Method
To make the curry paste, put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend to a paste (or you can use a pestle and mortar). Set aside half the paste. Stir the tofu into the other half and leave to marinate (either until it’s needed if cooking immediately, or, if time permits, a few hours).

To make the curry, add the oil to a deep frying pan and fry the shallot for 3–4 minutes, or until softened. Add the tofu and remaining curry paste and cook over a medium–high heat for 3 minutes. Turn the tofu and cook for another 3 minutes, until crisp. (If you want the tofu to remain crisp, remove it from the pan and set aside; otherwise keep it in the pan.)

Pour in the vegetable stock, half the coconut milk and the sugar and bring to the boil for 1 minute. Turn the heat down as low as possible (less than a simmer). Add the ginger and remaining coconut milk and stir. Taste and add salt if you like.

Add the rice noodles and broccoli and heat for 3–4 minutes, or until cooked. Add the beansprouts (and return the crispy tofu to the pan if you removed it) and cook for 1 minute.

Serve in bowls, garnished with green chilli and basil, and add a wedge of lime to each bowl.

Food / Lentil Curry by miniming: 5:03am On Nov 03, 2020
Lentil curry

A one pot lentil curry that’s full of flavour. Perfect if you’re batch cooking as it freezes brilliantly! This recipe uses tamarind paste which you can swap for lemon juice, if you prefer.

Ingredients

3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
5 curry leaves
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
80g/2¾oz brown onions, finely chopped (about 1 medium onion)
½ tsp mild chilli powder
1 tsp ground turmeric
300g/10½oz red lentils
1.2 litres/2 pints warm water
80g/2¾oz tomatoes, finely chopped
1 tsp caster sugar
1 tsp tamarind paste
salt
1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander, to garnish
freshly cooked rice or chapatis, to serve

Method

Place the garlic and curry leaves in a pestle and mortar. Crush to a coarse paste and set aside.

Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and, once they begin to pop, add the onions. Fry for 6 minutes until softened and then add the garlic and curry leaf mixture. Stir well, frying for 1 minute. Add the chilli powder and turmeric. Stir well and add the lentils and water. Season with salt and bring to the boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes with a lid on, stirring halfway through.

Stir in the tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes without the lid. Stir well, making sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Mash the lentils lightly with the back of the spoon as it begins to thicken. Add a little water if required.

Add the tamarind paste and stir well. Garnish with the coriander and serve with rice or chapatis.

Food / Pot-roast Pork (enchaud Périgourdin) by miniming: 5:05am On Nov 02, 2020
Pot-roast pork (Enchaud périgourdin)

I bought a couple of jars of Enchaud périgourdin in Périgueux market. It’s pork loin that is studded with garlic and pot-roasted with a small amount of stock and pig’s trotters, then left to go cold before being bottled. It’s designed to be thinly sliced and served with other cold meats, pâtés and pickles. I decided to create a version in which I stud the pork with plenty of garlic in the same way, wrap it in the skin to keep in the moisture and pot-roast it with lots of root vegetables for a deep winter flavour.

Ingredients

For the pepper spice mix
1 chipotle chilli, seeds removed
1 pasilla chilli, seeds removed
2 tbsp black peppercorns
2 tbsp white peppercorns
2 tsp Szechuan peppercorns
1 tbsp salt
For the pork
1kg/2lb 4oz pork loin, bone in, skin removed but reserved, with 1cm/½in fat left on meat
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
50g/1¾oz salted butter
300g/10½oz swede, peeled and cut into 3cm/1¼in chunks
300g/10½oz carrot, peeled and cut into 3cm/1¼in chunks
300g/10½oz onion, cut into 3cm/1¼in pieces
500ml/18fl oz beef or chicken stock (see tip)
few fresh thyme sprigs
2 bay leaves
½ tsp pepper spice mix (see above)

Nairaland / General / Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six Quarantine Delayed Past March 2021 by miniming: 6:10am On Oct 30, 2020
Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six Quarantine Delayed Past March 2021

Ubisoft has pushed two of its biggest games into the 2021-2022 fiscal year, meaning we won't see them until April at the earliest.

The Far Cry team explained the delay in a statement posted to Twitter:

"Earlier this year, we introduced you to Far Cry 6--the most ambitious game in the series to date. We promised an immersive fantasy to lead a modern-day guerrilla revolution set in a rich and exotic world, filled with memorable moments, killer characters, and an epic story.

"While we know you are all anxious to get your hands on Far Cry 6, we want to let you know that we've been given more time to allow us to make this the game you aspire to play while focusing on the well-being of our teams in this unprecedented global context. Our teams around the world are working in the studios and from their homes to pour their passion and creativity into making an unforgettable game--one we hope you will love."

Far Cry 6 had been set for February 18, 2021, while Rainbow Six Quarantine was targeting early 2021. Quarantine had already been delayed in 2019, alongside Watch Dogs Legion and Gods & Monsters (now renamed Immortals: Fenyx Rising). At the time, CEO Yves Guillemot chalked up the delays to a disappointing performance from other recent games, saying that the extra time was necessary to make the projects live up to their potential. Watch Dogs released this week, while Immortals is due in December.

When Far Cry 6 and R6 Quarantine do come out, we'll be well into the next generation with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S on the market. Ubisoft has already detailed plans to offer next-gen upgrades with enhanced performance, and for the time being, at least, isn't making the next-gen versions cost $70.

Nairaland / General / Valorant's New Agent Skye Has A Healing Ability, Revealed In Trailer by miniming: 5:04am On Oct 12, 2020
Valorant's New Agent Skye Has A Healing Ability, Revealed In Trailer

The new Valorant agent Skye is an Initiator-class from Australia who can heal her team, but not herself.

Riot has released a trailer showing off the new Valorant agent Skye, a day after it revealed more information about Act 3, including news of the upcoming agent's delay. The new agent is named Skye, an Initiator-class from Australia. Based on the trailer and an early leak of her kit, she seems to be a healer who utilizes a number of animal-themed "trinkets" to track and control her enemies on the battlefield. She will be available on October 27 alongside patch 1.11.

We haven't had an official look at Skye's kit yet, but a leak from a data miner credited as MrJack025 on Reddit provides more context for some of the abilities we see in the official agent trailer from Riot. If this is anything like the last few agent reveals, we expect an official post on the Riot blog sometime in the next day or two.

According to the leak, Skye's abilities include Regrowth, Trailblazer, and Guiding Light. Her ultimate is called Seekers. The in-game text from the leak appears as follows, but please be aware that this is subject to change anytime between now and Skye's official release:

Regrowth - C
EQUIP a healing trinket. HOLD FIRE to channel, healing allies in range and line of sight. Can be reused until her healing pool is depleted. Skye cannot heal herself.

Trailblazer - Q
EQUIP a Tasmanian tiger trinket. FIRE to send out and take control of the predator. While in control, FIRE to leap forward, exploding in a concussive blast and damaging directly hit enemies.

Guiding Light (3x) - E
EQUIP a hawk trinket. FIRE to send it forward. HOLD FIRE to guide the hawk in the direction of your crosshair. RE-USE while the hawk is in flight to transform it into a flash.

Seekers - X (Ultimate)
EQUIP a Seeker trinket. FIRE to send out three Seekers to track down the three closest enemies. If a Seeker reaches its target, it nearsights them.

Based on the trailer, it does not seem that Guiding Light, essentially a flash grenade, can penetrate through walls like Breach's Flashpoint or Reyna's nearsighting Leer. It only shows Skye controlling the hawk trinket through openings and around cover. It's also not clear yet whether or not her trinkets can be damaged or destroyed by other players, like Reyna's Leer orb. A few more questions remain, like how much health Regrowth restores, though we probably won't know more until Skye is available to play on October 27.

Nairaland / General / Fear The Walking Dead Season 6: Is Morgan Dead? by miniming: 5:39am On Oct 11, 2020
Fear The Walking Dead Season 6: Is Morgan Dead?

Fear the Walking Dead came to New York Comic Con to talk about Season 6 and discuss what, exactly, is going on with Morgan.

The big concern coming out of the Season 5 finale of Fear the Walking Dead, for better or worse, was whether or not Morgan (Lennie James) has survived being shot and left to be chomped on by walkers. During the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel, a new trailer hinted that something is very wrong with the character and he seemed to be, at the very least, on death's door. So, is Morgan a walker now?

It sounds like that is not the case. During the show's panel at New York Comic Con, co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss hinted about what Morgan's condition could mean as the season progresses.

"Something's definitely going on with Morgan and something that we haven't quite seen before in The Walking Dead universe, and it is going to push Morgan to new places and make him really question everything he's ever been about and kind of who he wants to be going forward," he said. "If he gets to go forward."

What's more, James teased that when directing the second episode of the new season--which focuses heavily on Strand (Colman Domingo) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey)--he did so while wearing his costumes and extensive makeup for the character. That certainly points to the likelihood that he's going to somehow survive, yet again. Sure, it's entirely possible scenes from the first two episodes were filming simultaneously. That said, it's hard to believe Morgan is going anywhere.

Instead, it sounds like the show will evolve the Morgan character in some way. Given that Fear the Walking Dead has completely morphed itself from originally focusing on the Clark family to becoming the continuing adventures of Morgan, anything is possible.

As for what else to expect from the new season, the producers revealed that a lot of the episodes will almost play like an anthology series, focussing on separate characters that were split apart at the end of Season 5. However, they will all be working toward a common plot development coming later in Season 6.

The sixth season of Fear the Walking Dead premieres Sunday, October 11, on AMC.

Spider-Man 3 Adds Doctor Strange As The Movie Gets Even Weirder - Report

At this rate, if the next Spider-Man movie isn't about the multiverse, something has gone horribly wrong in the MCU.

What, exactly, is going on with the next Spider-Man movie? If the Marvel Cinematic Universe wants fans to believe the next film will dive heavily into the multiverse, then Marvel Studios is doing a great job.

We learned this week that Jamie Foxx is believed to be playing the villainous Electro in the movie, a role he originally played in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. That, combined with the fact that JK Simmons appeared in Spider-Man Far From Home as J. Jonah Jameson--a character he played in the original Spidey trilogy--certainly points to a mashup of Spider-Man franchises.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the film, becoming a mentor for Spider-Man (Tom Holland). What does that mean for a movie that brings together the various Spider-Man universes? Well, the next Doctor Strange film is called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What's more, that movie will be tied to Disney+'s WandaVision, which certainly looks to be set in some form of an alternate reality.

The big question now is if this is a movie about the multiverse, how far will it take the concept? Hopefully, if they are bringing the universes together that means fans will see the former Spider-Men--Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire--suit up one more time. Why stop there, though? Bring Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to live-action and give us Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, and a CG animated Spider-Ham. The sky really is the limit with this.

Whatever the case, the next Spider-Man movie is scheduled to begin filming later this month.

Intel Reveals 11th Generation Rocket Lake CPUs, Out In 2021

A day before AMD is scheduled to announce its own new line of CPUs, Intel is stealing some of the attention with Rocket Lake.

On the eve of AMD revealing its next-generation Zen 3 CPUs, Intel has officially announced its new desktop CPUs that will be coming to market in early 2021.

The 11th generation chips, dubbed Rocket Lake, aren't being revealed in detail just yet, with Intel saying more specifications on the new CPUs will be coming soon. In the announcement the company does, however, point to its success with its current generation of CPUs, despite still being built on a 14nm process for desktop chips.

It's unclear if Intel is finally moving to 10nm for desktop with Rocket Lake and what this might entail for the company's single-core performance dominance, but the announcement does confirm that the new CPUs will finally add support for PCIe 4.0. This means you'll be able to run new PCIe 4.0 expansion cards and SSDs on Intel boards soon, after AMD added support for it with its current generation Ryzen 3000 CPUs.

AMD is announcing its new Zen 3 CPUs during a livestream tomorrow, with desktop versions of the Ryzen 4000 series expected to be revealed. AMD has come back in the CPU market in a big way, with a focus on affordable multi-core processors that are exceptional for content creation and only slightly behind Intel on single-core performance for games.

Resident Evil Reboot Movie Cast Announced, New Details Revealed

The new Resident Evil film is one of several new upcoming projects based on the classic game series.

While the most recent Resident Evil movie series ended in 2017 with The Final Chapter, there's still plenty to come from the long-running zombie action franchise. Last month, it was reported that there are two Resident Evil shows in development for Netflix, and there's also a movie reboot in the works too. The first cast members from the film have been revealed, as well as some details about what to expect.

As reported by Deadline, the movie will feature characters that will be familiar to fans of the classic video games series. Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) will play Claire Redfield, with Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin.

The movie will be directed by Johannes Roberts, who helmed the hit shark thriller 47 Meters Down and its sequel, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. In a statement, Roberts spoke about what fans could expect from the latest Resident Evil film. "I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences," he said.

In addition, producer Robert Kulzer revealed the film's setting. "After a dozen games, six live-action movies, and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City," he said. The movie doesn't have a release date yet.

In terms of the Netflix Resident Evil shows, one will be live-action, while the other will be CG animated. The live-action series will not be based on any of the games, but will instead focus on 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker, the daughters of Albert Wesker, who are living in a place called New Raccoon City. As for the animated series, that will be titled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and will center around Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Neither show has a release date yet, but Infinite Darkness is expected in 2021.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered Uses Cross-Play To Up The Intensity

EA's update of the 2010 cops-and-racers title amps up the visuals and makes lots of improvements, but it's taking on your friends on every platform that seems most fun.

If anything seems like it's set to define gaming for the foreseeable future, it's cross-play. More and more, the lines between platforms are being erased, dropping the barriers that previously kept fans of Xbox, PlayStation, PC, or Nintendo hardware from facing each other head-to-head. With its remaster of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, publisher Electronic Arts is updating a beloved racing game, but it's the chance to race against friends regardless of their platform that might be its most exciting aspect.

We got a chance to spend a few hours with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered on PC ahead of its announcement, playing through a number of events in Career mode and seeing a bit of how Hot Pursuit's updated Autolog social features work. In short, the remaster looks and plays extremely well--it's fast and intense, and the improvements made by developer Stellar Entertainment make Hot Pursuit feel right at home on current-generation hardware.

The thrust of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is street racing, and you'll drive a variety of real cars as you try to take top honors in various illegal events. But you don't just flaunt the law--you can also play as the cops, where your goal is to chase down racers and try to crash them or run them off the road in order to make arrests. You can switch between the two sides throughout the single-player Career mode and in multiplayer events.

Autolog is Hot Pursuit's way of turning every event into a competition with your friends, even when you're not playing together. It tracks your times through events as you play them and pipes them into the games of the people on your friend list (and vice versa), so you're always afforded ways to race against each other, regardless of when you play. To keep the competition going, Autolog also recommends challenges and events for you based on what your friends are playing. Cross-play means you can compete against your friends and their times regardless of where you play. It's worth noting, however, that cross-play doesn't include cross-saves, so you won't be able to jump between platforms.

There's a lot that's gone into Hot Pursuit Remastered to bring it into the current generation, according to creative director Chris Roberts. In addition to amped-up visuals, developer Stellar has enhanced things like colors and car paints, as well as how navigation works. Stellar has completely rebuilt the garage section so that you can spend more time admiring the cars you unlock along the way, and Hot Pursuit's photo mode has been updated to go with the improved looks. There's also a new wrap editor that will be added after the remaster launches, offering more opportunities to customize your rides.

From a gameplay standpoint, one of the more expansive tweaks is how Stellar has incorporated post-launch content from the original Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Cars, events, and multiplayer modes such as Arms Race and Most Wanted--that were previously part of downloadable content--are now all part of the remastered game.

"We've taken all of the post-launch content woven into the career, so it's an additional six hours of content that's spread out throughout the single player game, which allows for a much more varied and exciting route through," Roberts said during an online press event. "Even if you're familiar with the original game, there's a whole bunch of new stuff in there woven in that will surprise you as you're going through. A whole bunch of new events for both the cops and the racers."

Roberts and Criterion Games general manager Matt Webster think that change will be pretty significant for returning players. Working in post-launch content means that Stellar has reworked progression through the game to incorporate events and cars that were part of downloadable content, so you'll encounter those things organically as you play through the career. Even if you played a ton of Hot Pursuit in the past, the new Career mode in the remaster will feel different as it opens up different options and races at different times.

Graphically, Hot Pursuit Remastered looks great. Roberts said the game can run at 4k resolution and 30 frames per second on the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro, or at 1080p and 60 FPS on both. On the base versions of the Xbox One and PS4 and on the Nintendo Switch, you'll get 1080p and 30 FPS.

Higher-end PCs can manage 4k resolutions as well as the higher frame rate, but the game is locked at 60 FPS because that's how the physics in the original Hot Pursuit were coded, Robert explained. "We did try it at 120 FPS and bad things happened," he said.

In practice, Hot Pursuit Remastered is a great time, whether you're fleeing the cops or smashing racers into guard rails. Stellar has improved a lot of little things both big and small, adding to a title that a lot of players already love without messing too much with a good thing. Elements like shortcuts are easier to spot and navigating courses is clearer, but the core of Hot Pursuit's gameplay--the intense speed and tight racing controls--feel great even if you're not much of a racer in general. Even if you're unfamiliar with it, it's easy to jump into a new car and find yourself drifting around corners and dodging cops with relative ease, which is a testament to how intuitive Hot Pursuit Remastered feels. And of course, constantly knowing your friends' records as you work your way through the game helps make every event a little more exciting.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 6, and Switch on November 13--but there are no plans for a next-gen release, according to Criterion and Stellar.

Members Of Prominent Video Game Piracy Group Arrested

Several members of Team Xecuter were charged with multiple felony counts and have been taken into custody.

Members of the multinational video game piracy group Team Xecuter are facing multiple felony charges, the US Attorney's Office of the Western District of Washington announced today. Max Louarn, Yuanning Chen, and Gary Bowser were all charged with 11 felony counts, including wire fraud, trafficking in circumvention devices, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

"These defendants were allegedly leaders of a notorious international criminal group that reaped illegal profits for years by pirating video game technology of US companies," Brian Rabbitt, Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, said. "These arrests show that the department will hold accountable hackers who seek to commandeer and exploit the intellectual property of American companies for financial gain, no matter where they may be located."

Team Xecuter, known for releasing homebrew software for various video game systems including the Nintendo Switch and 3DS, is comprised of more than a dozen members around the world. The indictment alleges the group "at times cloaked its illegal activity with a purported desire to support gaming enthusiasts who wanted to design their own video games for noncommercial use. However, the overwhelming demand and use for the enterprise's devices was to play pirated video games."

“These defendants lined their pockets by stealing and selling the intellectual property of other video-game developers–even going so far as to make customers pay a licensing fee to play stolen games," US Attorney Brian Moran said. "This conduct doesn't just harm billion-dollar companies, it hijacks the hard work of individuals working to advance in the video-game industry."

The US Attorney's Office notes these charges are still allegations at this point and the defendants have not yet been convicted. The case is being investigated jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations. Louarn and Bowser were both arrested abroad last month. The US is currently seeking Louarn's extradition to stand trial, while Bowser appeared in federal court in New Jersey Friday.

Twitch Rolls Out Soundtrack Beta To Give Streamers Rights-Cleared Music

Twitch's new beta program aims to help streamers include music on their streams without facing rights issues.

Licensed music has been an issue for many streamers in the past, with takedown notices coming from rights holders and making certain games complicated to stream or post videos of. It's made streaming games with big licensed soundtracks, like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, difficult. Twitch is testing a solution to this issue, an app called Soundtrack By Twitch that will allow streamers to play license-cleared music in their streams.

In a blog post, Twitch has detailed Soundtrack, which has an interface very similar to Spotify. "Soundtrack gives you a curated collection of rights-cleared music and integrates with your streaming software to separate your audio sources, allowing you to keep your channel safe while you create compelling content and grow as a creator," the post says.

Artists currently available, according to the blog, include Above & Beyond, mxmtoon, Porter Robinson, RAC, SwuM, "and many more". Claude Von Stroke, Cloudchord, Chrome Sparks, and Tia Nomore are also listed on the Soundtrack website.

The current beta is compatible with OBS Studio v26.0 or later, and compatibility with Twitch Studio and Streamlabs OBS is planned. Streamers can join a waitlist now, and invites to the program will be sent out over email.

This is an issue that streaming platforms seem to be increasingly aware of--Facebook Gaming also recently licensed a bunch of music for streamers. Microsoft, meanwhile, closed down its streaming service Mixer earlier this year.

Xbox's Rarest Achievement Belongs To Bethesda Boss Todd Howard

Todd Howard, whose company has just joined the Xbox family, is the only person still allowed to make "Achievement Unlocked" jokes.

The pop of an Xbox Achievement unlocking can be a sweet sound, one that indicates that you've done something worth celebrating and that your Gamerscore has increased to reflect it. But for Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, there's one Xbox Achievement that's particularly special--because he's the only person in the world who will ever have it, thanks to some folks at Microsoft.

Following the news that Microsoft has acquired Bethesda for $7.5 billion, Howard spoke about his history with Xbox in a post on Bethesda's website. In it, he shares an anecdote about a bespoke Achievement created just for him, which exists only on his account.

That's right, Achievement hunters: You will never be able to get this Achievement.

"When I received the Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC, I joked in my acceptance, 'I wonder how many Achievement points this one is worth?' At the end of the ceremony, some good friends from Microsoft congratulated me and said they'd find out," Howard recalls.

"A few months later I was given a code to a game they had created, named after me and locked to my account," he continues. "When ran, it unlocks a single Achievement - 'Lifetime - 1000pts.' It still sits in my list when I check, and I smile every time."

Unfortunately, we don't know Todd Howard's Gamertag or Gamerscore--or whether he ever farmed Avatar the Last Airbender: The Burning Earth for an easy 1000GS.

Now, Howard has another massive Xbox milestone to celebrate--Microsoft paid more for Bethesda than it's paid for any other studio acquisition, topping Mojang by several billion dollars. It was also far more than what Disney paid for Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise. In fact, it's the second-largest video game acquisition in history. Microsoft went from having a semi-weak lineup of first-party studios a few years ago to now having one of the best.

Howard also talked about Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI, and how they'll introduce an enormous engine overhaul. In a separate interview, Howard has also talked more about Starfield and how next-gen console tech has had an impact on it.

Xbox Series X and Series S launch on November 10 and your Gamerscore will carry over to these new systems. Xbox preorders are available now, but, as expected, they have been messy.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon PS5 Release Date Set For March

The new Yakuza game is also shifting its release date on PC, PS4, and Xbox One to align with the Xbox Series X/S launch.

A release date for Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PS5 has been announced, and it will be available on March 2, 2021. Meanwhile, all other versions of the game are now shifting their date to align with that of the next-gen Xbox version: Like a Dragon releases on November 10, 2020 for Xbox Series X / Series S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Sega previously confirmed that Like a Dragon would receive a PS5 version and promised an upgrade path from the PS4 version. And indeed, buying the PS4 version digitally will entitle you to a free download of the PS5 version once it's available.

If you buy Like a Dragon on Xbox One, you will also automatically receive a Series X version through Xbox Smart Delivery. Additionally, Like a Dragon supports cross-save, so if you start the game on Xbox One, your progress will be transferred when you play the game on Series X.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was released in Japan back in January, and the Western localization coming in November will feature English voiceovers and includes actor George Takei as Masumi Arakawa, patriarch of the Arakawa Family.

The game is the eighth title in the main Yakuza franchise and notably, Kazuma Kiryu isn't the protagonist. Instead, you'll play as Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking yakuza henchman, freshly released from prison. He took the fall for a muder he didn't commit and was sentenced to 18 years in prison, and now released, discovers that no one is waiting for him. Kasuga's new mission is to find out why his family betrayed him and reorient himself in the criminal underworld.

Unlike other Yakuza games, Like a Dragon will feature turn-based RPG-style combat based on the protagonist's favorite game, Dragon Quest. Players can also participate in minigames like karaoke sessions and go-kart racing. Check out our full Yakuza: Like a Dragon preview for more teasers. Xbox Game Pass Will Add Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield, And All Other Bethesda Games

With the news that Microsoft has acquired Bethesda, the companies offered a reminder that first-party games are available on release day through Game Pass.

Microsoft has acquired Bethesda and its parent company ZeniMax for a whopping $7.5 billion, bringing it into the Xbox fold. That includes some massive franchises like Doom, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls. But as part of the acquisition news, the companies also dropped a reminder that first-party games like Starfield will be available on Game Pass upon release. You may never have to actually purchase another Bethesda game again.

The announcement from Bethesda mentions Starfield specifically: "Microsoft will grow from 15 to 23 creative studio teams and will be adding Bethesda's iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass. This includes Microsoft's intent to bring Bethesda’s future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or PC, like Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios."

In a roundtable interview following the announcement, Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard said that some people from Microsoft have seen Starfield. But don't expect it to debut anytime soon. He also mentioned that he likes to wait "as long as possible" to show his games.

The press release makes no such specific mention of Elder Scrolls 6--which Howard has said is still a long way off--but the precedent set by other first-party games would suggest that it will come to Game Pass too. This also means that current ZeniMax games like Doom Eternal are fair game. In that specific game's case, it is coming to Game Pass on October 1 for both Xbox One and PC. Any sequels to these or the company's many other franchises will hit Game Pass too. If you have an Android device and Game Pass Ultimate, you'll likely be able to stream them on the go, too.

A note from Howard also noted that Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 will benefit from some big tech changes at the studio. Those two games, and possibly others, will use what he's calling the "largest engine overhaul since Oblivion." No date has been set for either game, but Skyrim was originally released back in 2011 and has been ported to practically every system since. It's even playable on Amazon Alexa ... kind of. It's funny for at least a few minutes. Just don't expect to make your own character.

Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI were both announced far earlier than we typically see from Bethesda. During its E3 2018 presentation, the games both received title cards and extremely brief teasers. We know almost nothing about them two years later.

Microsoft also noted in its announcement that Game Pass subscriptions have risen to 15 million users. That's a big number of monthly subscribers to its all-you-can-eat game subscription, even without the extra games coming from the Bethesda acquisition. But clearly, Xbox Game Pass is key to the Bethesda acquisition. Xbox head Phil Spencer has also indicated that the move is more about increasing the value of its services than locking down exclusives. With so many Bethesda studios releasing games, a Game Pass subscription could help you save a substantial amount of money. With streaming access via Game Pass Ultimate, it's even more impressive.

There are two Bethesda games that might not come to Xbox Game Pass, too--Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, both of which were announced as PS5 exclusives before this deal went through. Whether they will eventually make their way to Xbox now is unknown.

Game Pass is also included in Microsoft's All Access payment plans for console purchases, which may get another big boost tomorrow when pre-orders go live for Xbox Series X and Series S. For more details, read our Xbox Series X and Series S preorder guide. Goo luck in managing to track one down!

2020 Is The First Year Without A New Marvel Movie In Over A Decade

Marvel has been releasing as many as three movies per year recently, making this an even more stark change.

Perhaps as was to be expected, more of the films slated for release this year have been delayed, and that includes Black Widow. With the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pushed until 2021, that clears the entire year's slate of Marvel films--making 2020 the first year since 2009 without any new Marvel movies to hit theaters.

That will come as a surprise one way or the other, whether you think it's shocking it's already been a decade of annual (or more frequent) entries or that it's only been a decade. Either way, it seems fitting that what has been such a weird year will buck tradition in yet another way.

The release of new Marvel movies is like clockwork. This year will be not only the first time we're not getting one in a given year in over a decade, it's also the first time since 2012 that we're not getting two (and the first time since 2016 that we're not getting three in a single year). A new Marvel movie hits theaters almost as often as the seasons change. I clean the unfortunate gap between the counter and my fridge less often. Their debut is a signal that it's a time for me to change my toothbrush head. It's how I know it's time to consider (but not actually follow through with) canceling my unused gym membership.

Marvel Movie Release Years

2008: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk
2010: Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger
2012: The Avengers
2013: Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World
2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy
2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man
2016: Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange
2017: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok
2018: Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp
2019: Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home
If such a break had to come, this is the best time for it. Avengers: Endgame wrapped up the years-long story that had been set up over the course of the first three phases of the MCU. Marvel and Disney could barely wait two months to get the next movie into theaters, with Spider-Man: Far From Home coming along and teasing some things that looked like they might never pay off due to the now-averted crisis with Sony. It was time for the brakes to be applied--and that was the plan, with Black Widow originally scheduled for a May 2020 release. It just turns out the hiatus will be much longer than intended.

As a prequel, it doesn't feel as if Black Widow will be the main kicking off point for Phase 4, even if it is technically the first of its movies that will hit theaters (eventually). Whatever the case, it's not as if fans were left dangling on a cliffhanger.

And beyond that, we're not completely devoid of any Marvel-centric content right now. Game fans got a surprisingly solid story campaign to enjoy in Marvel's Avengers, while Disney+ subscribers will get WandaVision later this year. That's another new release, like Black Widow, whose function in the MCU's broader canon that is unclear at this point, although the recent trailer was certainly intriguing (and, frankly, another more standalone story would be welcome after so much time was spent building up to Infinity War and Endgame).

No doubt the Black Widow delay was in some part made for financial reasons--Tenet hasn't exactly set the world on fire as many people understandably stay away from theaters--but it's nonetheless welcome news that people aren't being asked to go and sit in a room together. That said, there is a certain comfort in seeing the nonstop procession of Marvel movies hit theaters, and the prospect of now going almost two full years without one is just the latest indication that 2020 is not a normal year on any front.

Opendoor’s Cofounder Talks Covid, Growth, And The Quest For Profits As The Company Goes Public

The market reacted kindly yesterday to news that Opendoor, a technology startup that lets customers rapidly sell their homes, will go public through a merger with a blank-check company. Shares of its soon-to-be acquirer soared 35% during normal trading hours, before falling 7% early on Wednesday.

The deal gives Opendoor an enterprise value of $4.8 billion and is a breakthrough for the industry it helped pioneer. But while Opendoor dominates the rapid home-selling marketplace—also known as iBuying—with roughly half of its market share, there is scant proof that the company, let alone its smaller competitors, has devised a sustainable path to profitability. Last year it lost $339 million on revenue of $4.7 billion.

Opendoor insists it is simply burning money in the short term while it pursues growth. “In the more mature markets that we're in, we actually see the metrics being very sound,” Ian Wong, Opendoor’s cofounder and chief technology officer, told Forbes in August.

Last year, Opendoor sold 18,000 homes, making it over three times bigger than its next largest competitor, Zillow, with which it held a combined 86% market share in 2019, according to the real estate consultant Mike DelPrete. Competitors like Redfin and Offerpad trail far behind.

To Wong, that speaks for itself. “Five years ago, we were in like two markets, three markets,” he says. “Today we’re in 21.”

NAVIGATING THE CORONAVIRUS
Early in the pandemic, Opendoor’s position looked bleak. In March, the company paused acquisitions as it tried to gauge the coming economic damage.

“Just as Covid made everyone stand still, that happened to real estate as well,” Wong says. “The only data points we saw were coming out of China and Italy, and things were looking not very good.”

The next month, in April, Opendoor laid off 35% of its staff, a major setback for a firm that had been valued at $3.8 billion in 2019 and received hundreds of millions of dollars in venture capital, including from SoftBank.

“Opendoor’s move buys it time to weather the storm, but at the expense of weakening the business,” DelPrete said in a report that month. “Saying goodbye to 35% of a well-oiled team puts it at an executional disadvantage to pre-Covid Opendoor. And to Zillow,” which didn’t announce layoffs.

Wong says the company spent the following months fully digitizing the home-selling process, from inspections to notarizations, some of which had been conducted in person before. To further boost momentum, this spring Opendoor also launched a new feature called Home Reserve, in which it will buy a new house for customers in cash while attempting to sell their existing home. Once the initial house sells, customers get the deed on their new property.

Those efforts appeared to pay off. The company says that offers on homes up for resale in June rose 153% as compared to the prior year. It helps that mortgage rates are at historic lows, and many urban residents suddenly need more space to facilitate working remotely.

“New York City and San Francisco: If you live in those two places, you think the sky is falling,” Wong says. “But actually, if you live everywhere else in the country, it's the complete opposite.”

A NEW INDUSTRY FORMS
Opendoor was the brainchild of Keith Rabois, a venture capitalist and technology veteran, who saw big potential in the painful home-buying experience. According to a 2016 Forbes profile, he came up with the idea in 2003 while working for Peter Thiel’s investment firm. Rabois and a coworker once pitched Thiel on an idea similar to Zillow; Thiel allegedly found the concept so dull that he kicked them out of the conference room.

Rabois modeled the idea out any way. The numbers looked huge. “After a few years we [were projecting] revenues the size of Wal-Mart,” he said in 2016. He admitted those initial projections were lofty, but added that, “We'll be in the billions of dollars [in revenue] very fast"—a prediction that came true.

For years, Rabois tried and failed to find an entrepreneur willing to build the business. Finally, he met Eric Wu, who had already sold one real estate startup, Rent Advisor, and would soon sell his second, Movity. Wu agreed to take on the project.

Ian Wong joined soon after, in 2014. A Stanford PhD dropout and Square alum, he was tasked with creating the pricing models critical to Opendoor’s upfront home purchases. “If we undervalue, we undermine customer trust. And if we overvalue, obviously, that's bad for business,” Wong says. (A fourth cofounder, JD Ross, also joined the business around the same time. He left in 2018.)

Opendoor raised a $10 million Series A in 2014, and launched in its first city, Phoenix, at the end of that year. It captured 2% of the city’s real estate transactions by the end of 2016. Slowly the firm recreated the model in other cities, and by 2017 it was generating $700 million in annual revenue.

Now that sales have skyrocketed, the challenge has turned to making money. Opendoor says that, using its own metrics—an adjusted earnings before income, depreciation, and amortization margin—it could be profitable in 2023. It does not, in typical Silicon Valley fashion, prefer to use net income as its profitability metric, which is useful for a business that is bleeding cash as it reaches for a bigger piece of the $1.6 trillion U.S. real estate market.

Last year losses rose 41%, though revenue almost tripled. This year is likely to look worse: The company projects revenue to fall 47%, to $2.5 billion, according to an investor presentation published on Tuesday. It did not project losses.

Right now the entire iBuying industry accounts for just 0.5% of transactions, but Opendoor says it aims to one day hit 4% market share and generate $50 billion in revenue. The company will use the capital from its public offering toward that end, investing in growth and new products.

Says Wong, of the company’s early, albeit unprofitable trajectory: “Our ambition has grown beyond that…. What we want to do is really, honestly play a very long-term game.”

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Star Liam Neeson Defends The Movie

Liam Neeson reflects on what happened to Ahmed Best following the movie's release, and says that he liked the movie.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace released in 1999, and the response has been fascinating--it received mixed reviews and a sour response from older fans, but is now looked back on with a mix of derision and nostalgia. Liam Neeson, who played Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in the prequel, has now reflected back on the movie--and how one of its other stars was treated by fans.

Talking to SiriusXM show Radio Andy (as picked up on by IndieWire), Neeson talks about Ahmed Best, who played the controversial Jar Jar Binks in The Phantom Menace. Neeson recalls thinking that Best could be "the next Eddie Murphy," and he was upset by how much criticism the actor drew.

"I know a lot of fans and critics didn’t like it, and my lovely friend Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks, came in for a lot of criticism," Neeson says. "To the point where it really hurt his career."

Neeson says that the fans have turned around on Best now, and are more respectful. Best has previously talked about how the reception of Jar Jar Binks took him to a dark place, but he's set to return to Star Wars soon to host a new Star Wars game show.

Neeson says that he likes the movie, too. "I got to be a Jedi, got to play with those wonderful lightsabers and stuff...I liked the movie. I’m proud of it. I’m proud to have been a part of it."

Liam Neeson's Jinn dies in The Phantom Menace, but the actor made a vocal cameo in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

While the next Star Wars movie is a while away, fans can look forward to The Mandalorian Season 2 starting October 30 on Disney +.
