Virtually nobody has memories from very early childhood but it's not because we don't retain information as young children. Rather, it may be because at that age, our brains don't yet function in a way that bundles information into the complex neural patterns that we know as memories. It's clear that young children do remember facts in the moment such as who their parents are, or that one must say "please" before mom will give you candy. This is called "semantic memory." Until sometime between the ages two and four, however, children lack "episodic memory" -- memory regarding the details of a specific event. Such memories are stored in several parts of the brain's surface, or "cortex." For example, memory of sound is processed in the auditory cortexes, on the sides of the brain, while visual memory is managed by the visual cortex, at the back. A region of the brain called the hippocampus ties all the scattered pieces together. "If you think of your cortex as a flower bed, there are flowers all across the top of your head," said Patricia Bauer of Emory University in Atlanta. "The hippocampus, tucked very neatly in the middle of your brain, is responsible for pulling those all together and tying them in a bouquet." The memory is the bouquet -- the neural pattern of linkages between the parts of the brain where a memory is stored. So why do kids usually fail to record specific episodes until the two-to-four age range? It may be because that's when the hippocampus starts tying fragments of information together, said psychologist Nora Newcombe of Temple University in Philadelphia. And there may be a reason for this, Newcombe said. Episodic memory may be unnecessarily complex at a time when a child is just learning how the world works. "I think the primary goal of the first two years is to acquire semantic knowledge and from that point of view, episodic memory might actually be a distraction," Newcombe said. Source: livescience.com

olorundimu: Op, none of the above remedies can stop the child from sucking his finger. It's a habit that wanes as the child gets older, most do not last beyond 5 years of age. No application of pepper, bitter leaf, alomo bitter or even deliberately inflicting injury to the affected finger will stop this habit. Show the child tender loving care and be patient with him. The waning process starts during his first few months to one year in school when he gets enough time to mingle with his peers.5years? lie! my bro stopped himself @17 after sec school |

37 Former PDP House Of Rep Members Present Impeachement Motion Against President Jonathan. According to a report by Vanguard, 37 former members of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have presented an impeachment motion against President Goodluck Jonathan. The legislators, who are allegedly acting in concert with their governors who defected with them to All Progressives Congress, APC, are also following up their plans with a high profile sensitisation campaign against alleged misdeeds of the administration. The plan to present the impeachment motion Vanguard learnt is, however, being seriously opposed by Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and some PDP loyalists in the House who have warned the 37 members that the plan could worsen their precarious position. The impeachment notice, which has been articulated into 30 points according to sources in the camp of the legislators, is a narrative of alleged misdeeds of the administration including financial misappropriatio n, unaccountabilit y, extra-budgetary spending, among others. The legislators are also threatening to drag the President before the International Court of Justice at The Hague for genocide in the North-East and crime against humanity via a petition to be submitted to all embassies and international organisations. The legislators have also lined up a series of high level consultations with some of the nation’s past leaders, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Mohammadu Buhari, Shehu Shagari, Atiku Abubakar and Alex Ekwueme. “The 37 of us are going to pay visits to all former presidents and vice presidents concerning the issue and to explain why we are taking this position,” one of the legislators disclosed at the weekend. The legislators also plan a demonstration at the ECOWAS Parliament where the lawmakers will present the list of the alleged crimes of the President and the impeachment notice. The demonstration will then move to the United States, British, Canadian and French embassies, as well as all other European Union countries. He said: ”Since the President does not want peace and he is going for our jugular, it’s a fight to finish this time around and he stands to lose more at the end of the day.” Source - Vanguard |
Contrary to the report that a BRT bus killed a soldier, the LAGBUS Asset Management Limited, operators of LAGBUS, on Friday explained what actually happened. It was reported today that the Nigerian soldiers went bersek and took to the streets to burn over 5 BRT buses said to be worth about N100 million and beat up the bus drivers and witnesses after one of their colleagues was allegedly killed by one of the brt buses. The Project Manager, Mutual Model Transports, one of the LAGBUS Franchises, Abiodun Apata who said the attack was unfortunate explained what happened saying the company only found a corpse after an eventful night and went to report it to the police. “By 10pm last night, one of our buses broke down at Onipanu; by 11pm, a rescue team with a van went to the scene to tow the bus. “Unfortunately, area boys started stoning our team which made our men to leave. Meanwhile, the driver put on hazard lights and C- Caution to alert motorists of the breakdown. “By 5am this morning, before the rescue team got to the scene, a corpse had been deposited in our bus and a motorcycle parked behind it. “When we saw it, we reported the case to the Pedro Police Station, Somolu, but before we got back to the scene, soldiers had burnt down five BRT buses and one belonging to LAGBUS." Meanwhile, the head of Operations of BRT, Johnson Oguntade, who also stated the deceased soldier was not hit by a BRT vehicle, said BRT vehicles have since been withdrawn from the streets following the burning of the buses by raging soldiers in order to avert more damage. He said: “I do not still understand why we are suffering for what we never caused. Why they are burning our buses is not known.” As a result of the incident and withdrawal of the brt buses, thousands of commuters were left stranded, commercial activities crippled, while there was heavy traffic gridlock on Ikorodu road with commercial bus operators taking advantage of the situation by increaing transport fare by about 50 per cent, Premium Times reported. Some of the vehicles set ablaze had been towed, while the others are still at the scene as at the time of this report. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Army, Gen. Olajide Olaleye has denied the involvement of the soldiers in the attack: "It’s not true that soldier destroyed buses or set any bus on fire. What happened was that a BRT bus knocked down a soldier and killed him. As usual in Lagos so area boys gathered and a few soldiers stopped at the scene as well. The GOC has dispatched military policemen to the scene to help restore law and order." The Lagos APC Youth leader Mr. Omotayo Sanyaolu condemned the havoc on BRT buses caused by Nigerian Soldiers . Over 5 BRT buses were set on fire by alleged Nigerian soldiers along Ikorodu Road in Lagos as one of the buses hit and killed another soldier this morning, July 4. According to witnesses, an unidentified soldier was riding a bicycle to work when the BRT bus knocked him down at the Palmgrove bus stop. However, Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Army, Gen. Olajide Olaleye, stated that it wasn’t Nigerian soldiers who carried out the rampage. "It’s not true that soldier destroyed buses or set any bus on fire," he said. "What happened was that a BRT bus knocked down a soldier and killed him. As usual in Lagos so area boys gathered and a few soldiers stopped at the scene as well. The GOC has dispatched military policemen to the scene to help restore law and order." According to previous reports, soldiers at the Abalti Barrack were alerted immediately after the accident. Thus, the road at Palmgrove was blocked by the soldiers as they began to vandalise every BRT in sight, causing a massive traffic. It was gathered that when the soldiers didn’t the driver, they seized one of the Estate’s security men. The man was beaten mercilessly and taken away. The journalists, who attempted to take photos, were severely beaten by the soldiers, who belonged to an outfit called “OP MESA”. The newsmen had to be rushed to a hospital. Some other pedestrians, who were making calls with their phones or even just holding the phone in sight, were slapped and kicked. Their phones were either seized or damaged. According to sources, at least 80 soldiers were on the road between Onipanu and Palmgrove. Pedestrians were required to raise their two hands as they passed to avoid being beaten by the soldiers. The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert to its citizens staying in the country following the ongoing Ramadan season. The alert, which was contained in a statement signed by Stephen P. Brunette, Executive Director of the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), urged its citizens to take extra precautions for their personal security in this period, Daily Independent reports. The statement is however, believed to issued following the June 25 bombing that rocked Emab Plaza in Wuse II area of Abuja. The US mission claimed that insurgents attacks usually takes place on weekends associated with holidays. Below is an excerpt from the alert: "Following the June 25 bombing in the Wuse II neighbourhood of Abuja, the Government of Nigeria has increased security measures in Abuja. This weekend also marks the commencement of the month of Ramadan. Given the history of bombing attacks on weekends (some associated with holidays), as well as the recent bombing at Emab Plaza in Wuse II, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria urges all U.S. citizens living and travelling in Nigeria to take extra precautions for your personal security and safety. The U.S. Mission urges against non-essential travel to or within Abuja during the upcoming weekend. "The U.S. Mission advises all U.S. citizens to be particularly vigilant around churches and other places of worship, locations where large crowds may gather, government facilities, and areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers during the upcoming weekend. Security measures in Nigeria remain heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, and U.S. citizens should expect additional police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country. "We recommend that U.S. citizens travelling to or residing in Nigeria enrol in the Department of State’s Smart Travellers Enrolment Program (STEP). STEP enrolment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, enrol directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Regularly monitor the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, including the Travel Warning for Nigeria, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. “Read the Country Specific Information for Nigeria. For additional information; refer to the “Traveller’s Checklist". Source - news.naij.com/69163.html |
