I don't want to sound like am overthinking this, but due to the isreali's attack on the iranian embassy. As a country to show their strength, Iran had to respond, I believe the missles iran launched would have been easily intercepted by isreali's iron dome and both USA and Iran knew this. Iran just had to show people that it wasn't weak.
But if isreal retaliates and there are casualties in iran then gloves are off and Iran would then have to bring out more capable missiles that would have a more success rate of maneuvering through the Iron dome. Because why would biden and US tell isreal not to respond after iran's attack. I believe they know iran wasn't trying to actually blow up shit, just a courtesy respond to the syrian embassy debacle
