Business › Alert: Oil Workers Begin Strike Over Fuel Price, Others by mistabiola(op): 9:17am On Dec 16, 2014
Oil workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Petroleum
and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria will
commence a nationwide strike on Monday (today) to
protest the inability of the Federal Government to carry out
turnaround maintenance of the nation’s four refineries and
reduce pump prices of petrol in line with the slump in
global prices of crude oil.

The unions said their members had been fully mobilised,
adding that the strike would not be suspended until there
was a strong commitment from the government and
managements/operators of affected oil companies on the
issues.

They said in a joint statement made available to our
correspondents on Sunday by the Media and Information
Officer, PENGASSAN, Mr. Babatunde Oke, that the strike
would affect all oil and gas operations in the upstream,
midstream and downstream sectors.

The over 40 per cent decline in the price of crude oil is
expected to have brought about a reduction in the pump
prices of petroleum products in the country, as seen in
other countries around the world.

The oil workers had last Monday threatened to embark on
the industrial action should the government fail to meet
their demands.

The President, PENGASSAN, Mr. Francis Johnson, in a
telephone interview with one of our correspondents on
Sunday night, confirmed the strike report.
“We are starting the strike by tomorrow (today) and as
events unfold, we will let people know,” he said.

The NUPENG National President, Mr. Achese Igwe, also said
on Sunday that the strike was also to protest the alleged
sacking of the Zonal Secretary of the Senior Staff
Association (Port Harcourt Zone), Mrs. Elo Ogbonda, by
Total Exploration and Production.

The oil workers said the strike was also to ensure that the
government evolved new strategies to combat pipeline
vandalism and crude oil theft, which had adversely affected
the nation’s economy.

Other reasons listed for the strike are delay in the passage
of the Petroleum Industry Bill, non-implementation of the
Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act
expected to reflect Nigerians in management positions and
expatriate quota law, appalling state of access roads to
refineries and oil depots’ facilities, insecurity all over the
country that has reportedly led to the death of their
members, casualisation of workers and unfair labour
practices by companies and government agencies.

The oil workers said that the unfair labour practices
included transfer and termination of national officers of the
two unions.

According to them, the government has refused to honour
all engagements and agreements reached with them on all
their issues of concerns including the turnaround
maintenance of the refineries and ensuring adequate
supply of crude oil to the refineries to ensure that they
function effectively.

The unions also demanded that the government should put
in place alternative strategies to stop pipeline vandalism
and crude oil theft, convene an industry stakeholders’
forum on the PIB status and falling crude oil prices and
address the ongoing high rate divestment in the industry
and its attendant job losses.

Health › Fast Weight Loss Diets - May Not Be So Fast Afterall by mistabiola(op): 9:10am On Dec 16, 2014
Fast Weight Loss Diets are everywhere. The first thing you need to ask yourself is, ARE THEY SAFE?

Some diet plans can do a lot more harm than good. Fad
diets such as the grapefruit diet for example, may work
only up to a point. When you have lost the weight and the
diet is done, you go back to the same way of eating and
what happens? The weight comes back and if you are not
careful you may just try to make up for lost time and add
on a few more pounds.

If you only have a few pounds to lose then by all means try
one of the many fast weight loss diets available so you can
get into that dress for the wedding. But, if you have a lot of
weight to lose you will need to make some lifestyle changes
to get to your ideal weight.

• Take A Minute To Write Down Your Weight Loss Goals:
Keeping track of what you eat in a journal will let you see
what you are putting in your body so if it needs to be
changed you can change it. Writing in a journal everyday is
very effective in helping you lose weight.

• Learn About Food: When you figure out how many
calories are in what you eat you will be able to put meals
together that are nutritionally balanced and satisfying.
Knowing what the right numbers are helps a lot too.

You can figure out how many calories you need in a day by
calculating your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, or you can
simply make up a meal plan that has enough food to equal
1500 calories or so.

However, learning to eat differently may take some practice
and careful planning. When I tell you that you need to eat
small meals throughout your day you are going to say you
do not have the time to do that because you are at work.
Well then, I will say that yes you can with some precise
planning.

You are going to start taking your lunch and snacks to work
with you. Stop wasting money and gaining weight by eating
out when you are at work. Save your wallet and your
waistline by buying an insulated lunch box and healthy
food to put in it.

Now you need to figure out what to put in it. Well, how
about a 6 ounce container of yogurt and some carrot sticks.
With an 8 ounce glass of water that is a great snack for the
middle of the morning. For your lunch, why not have a
sandwich made of lean turkey breast with some light mayo
and lettuce and a cup of grapes or some baked chips. Don't
forget the pickle on the side! There are a lot of things you
can do to make sure you eat small meals throughout your
day.

There are countless combinations of foods for snacks and
meals. Get creative, try some new things, you might find
you have a broader range of foods you like therefore giving
yourself even more options.

- Do not forget to pack enough food for two snacks, one in
the morning and one in the afternoon.

- Do your best to drink enough water during the day, too.
The more the better. Stay away from pop and caffeinated
beverages like coffee. Caffeine has a drying effect on the
body and can contribute to dehydration. Drink lots of
water. A good way to figure out how much you should drink
is divide what you weigh by half and drink that amount in
ounces of water everyday. Or you can start by striving to
drink 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water each day. It is just easier
that way.

If you do start one of the fast weight loss diets and there
are a lot of restrictions to the diet, you may need to take a
supplement to get the vitamins and minerals you need.

Here is one highly recommended weightloss supplement

Politics › The Plot To Impeach Sen. Mark Thickens by mistabiola(op): 8:46am On Dec 16, 2014
Some Peoples Democratic Party senators who are behind
the reported plot to impeach the Senate President, David
Mark, met for several hours in Abuja on Monday to fine-
tune their strategy.

A Senator from the South- South confirmed the
development in a telephone conversation with our
correspondent.
He said, “We held a meeting today (Monday) and it is one of
the series of meetings we have been holding on a regular
basis before and after the primary election.”

The lawmaker, who lost his bid to return to the Senate
during the December 8 PDP primary, said the meeting took
place in a five-star hotel close to the Apo Legislative
Quarters.
He added, “Our discussion centred on all issues bordering
on the last primary election of the PDP and the role played
by the governors.

“We are worried that the primary election in most cases
were manipulated by the governors and the leadership of
the party are helpless. We would have prevented the ugly
development if the Senate President had not assured us
before the election that everything was under his control.
“Right now, it becomes necessary for us to articulate and
formulate some critical issues. The fact that the primary
election in most instances were hugely flawed is not in
doubt.

“The fact that our interest was not protected even after we
were made to believe that there was automatic ticket for
most of us, is also not in doubt.
“It is also true that the Senate leadership failed to do the
needful in the Presidency and the PDP headquarters to
create a level playing field for us. We cannot pretend that
all is well.

“We cannot also pretend that we are happy the way and
manner most of us have been left in the cold . We will not
just leave things the way they are going. We needed to
meet to talk to ourselves ahead of our resumption on
Tuesday(today).”
When asked how and when the plot to remove Mark
would be actualised, he replied, “Nothing is ruled
out;everything is on the table but you need to wait and see
as things unfold.
“Let me also tell you that most of us have been too pro-
establishment; we are always avoiding issues that may rock
the boat and hence we have been taken for granted.”

The senator pledged to speak out officially after their plan
had been fully articulated.
But The PUNCH learnt that the aggrieved PDP senators
had yet to discuss their plot with the All Progressives
Congress lawmakers.

An APC senator from the North-West said, “I am aware of
the impeachment moves against President Jonathan but
the new one against the Senate leadership is new to me. I
have not been informed. I just arrived Abuja anyway. I
have been away for quite some time now.”

Another from the South-West also said, “I read the story in
the newspapers like every other person. I will find out and
get back to you by tomorrow (Tuesday ) when we resume
plenary.’’
However, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information,
Media and Public Affairs, Enyinnaya Abaribe,
dismissed the alleged plot to remove Mark as “unfounded
and misleading.”

Abaribe, in his statement on Monday titled, “Senators Are
United Behind Mark,” described as false, media reports on
the plot to remove Mark.
He maintained that “such unfounded story only exists in the
imagination of its authors.”

The Senate spokesman said, “Senators operating as a body
of one united family, have never at any time found any
grounds to move against its leadership or even thwart the
long-standing camaraderie the upper chamber is known
for, irrespective of political party affiliation.”
Abaribe said that the Senate had a tested internal
mechanism, which had been deployed in tackling difficult
issues that arose within and outside the chamber.

He added, “Such mechanisms and channels are
inexhaustible and shall always be deployed by the
leadership of the Senate, as it always does when the need
arises.”

Abaribe claimed that since the senators had implicit
confidence in the leadership of Mark, there was “nothing
now to suggest or confer any iota of truth on the
insinuation of any form of schism that could warrant the
removal of the President of the Senate.”
