Rev. Chris Okotie, founder of the Household of God Church and presidential candidate of the recently deregistered Fresh Democratic Party (FDP) had this to say in a recent interview with senior journalist Hazeez Balogun concerning his music, church and marriage and politics.

Read his revealing interview below:

When did you get the call to become a pastor?

Jesus appeared to me when I was three years old. My father then was a teacher in Uyo. I was a little boy then and really did not understand what it meant but I would tell everyone that I was a child of God. I had to accept Jesus completely when I was at the age of accountability. I did that when I was on campus in 1983. Then I did not know that I was going to be a minister. It was when I was in law school one morning when God spoke to me about going abroad. That was when I went to Oklahoma to study pastoring.

If provided, would you own a private jet?

If it is necessary, why would I not? Right now, I do not need a private jet. I do not do the kind of job that requires a private jet. I do not have branches all around the country where I have to fly back and forth. I do not need it. It is not just about having a private jet; it is also very difficult to maintain. So, if a minister has the resources to do it, that is between him and God who provided it for him. It is really not my business. The most important thing is are you feeding the flock? Are you there as a pastor to teach? Does the spirit of God trust you to take care of the flock? These are the questions I ask myself even before I buy a car. Something must be clearly understood; prosperity is of God. It is not God's desire that we are poor. Jesus became poor so that we can be rich.

Churches are becoming big businesses today and many pastors are living large while their followers are languishing in poverty. Some even fly private jets

Let me put it this way, every minister of God is entitled to what God provides. It is not the congregation that provides; it is God. God can use the congregation or whoever. So, if the Lord makes provisions for that (private jet) then such a person has no reason to decline. I do not know what is going on in any ministry, but I will say that anything that we own must be scripturally based. Prosperity is a part of the gospel and not the entire gospel. It is a means to an end and not an end by itself. Your congregation is your first priority. When you walk into our auditorium, you will see that I care about my congregation. The facilities we have there you will not find anywhere else. Go to our children's church or our nursery, you will see the facilities there are first-class. You would think the children there are those of multi-millionaires. You have to take care of the congregation first and foremost before anything else. When we first began, I did not have what I have today. Before I became prosperous, God had to test me to see if I will take care of my congregation. That is why you will see that we had air conditioning in the children?s department even when we just began. We also made sure that the church had property. We have landed properties and things like that. We believe in 'seek ye first the kingdom of God and every other thing will be added unto you'. That is what I can say about my own ministry. We also cater for the poor.

Large churches tend to own schools and universities; are we to see Household of God University soon?

It is possible. It depends on how the spirit directs. The church is the work of God; it is the vineyard of the almighty God. He determines what to do. Should Churches own universities? I say yes of course. It is part of the teachings. We must prepare this generation spirit, soul and body. If you remember in the past, churches owned schools. It is a step in the right direction. The moral rearmament of those times was stronger than what it is today. I will encourage churches to start schools and universities.

Are we to witness your third marriage?

I do not want to talk about that at this time. Spiritual matters cannot be understood by carnal minds. There are mysteries involved in the workings of a spiritual person. It is hard to be understood by minds that have not been elevated to such lofty heights. When we get to that bridge we will cross it.

Will it not be difficult for married couples in your church to approach you for counselling on marriage issues?

No. Those who spoke more about marriage issues in the Bible were not married. The revelation concerning marriage was given to us by Saint Paul who was a single man. Even Jesus spoke about marriage and he was not married. It is not the experience that teaches you what marriage is; it is the word of God. As long as you present the revelation of the word to your congregation and they apply it, then they will succeed. With the covenant that God has with man, God is stable; it is man who is not. If you notice, God brought Adam and Eve together in the Garden of Eden; they failed God, and God did not fail them. So, when people come together, they fail each other. If they do not subscribe to the word of God that marriage will not succeed. So, if there is an adherence to the word of God, the marriage will succeed. When you see that a marriage does not succeed, you should know that there must be a departure from the word of God.

You are a man of style; your hair and your suits always stand out.

Being a recording artiste sharpened my taste. I am more fashion conscious. I do not want to call myself a fashionista because that may sound clich?. I have good taste. The suit I wore recently on Sunday came off the runway from Dolce and Gabana?s new collection. When you look at the Bible, God was very particular about the apparel of the priesthood. I like good clothes and maybe it has to do with my orientation. Fashion has a way of giving you confidence.

It is said that when going to Household of God Church, you go with your Bible and your dictionary. You surely have a passion for fancy words.

It is called grandiloquence. Some people have said that I have elevated diction. Truly, I use that just to get attention. Coming from my background some people thought that I did not have the intellectual capacity to do the job of a minister where you convey deep spiritual truth to people. When I was in school, I just love that elevated diction. It became a part of my communication. I read a joke recently about Patrick Obahiagbon and I trading words. It was all made up, but was very funny. Each man has his own style. Communication is very personal and you choose how you want to communicate. When I am speaking with ?the press I speak with the same level of grandiloquence. I am from Delta. Pidgin English is our lingua franca. When I am at home I speak our language.

Before last year?s elections you asked Nigerians to vote President Goodluck Jonathan out of power, do you have a different view of him now?

With all due respect, I speak within the context of conventional propriety. He, as a Nigerian, has been given a great opportunity even though many of us say it is a great mistake and I still believe that. Look at the country; we are neither here nor there. It is the same story of corruption and stagnation. I still believe that Jonathan is a great mistake. I know that the elections were tampered with. He is the President today and I know that history will judge him based on what he does and what he does not do. I believe that, so far, he has done nothing beyond our expectations.

How would you react to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)?s recent deregistration your party, FRESH?

First, we believe that this is a conspiracy between the ruling party and the INEC. It is unconstitutional and repugnant to the spirit of the constitution and it is an attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to erase the voice of the opposition. It is also a ploy for the ruling party to perpetuate itself in power for as long as it can. We believe that the right thing to do is to go to court and expect the judiciary as the last bastion of our political and democratic experiment to remedy the situation and erase the aberration from our political landscape.

Will you join another party if at the end the party stands deregistered?

It is too early to say anything on that. What INEC has done is a frustration of the whole democratic process. If it is not arrested it is the beginning of what I call a medieval autocracy. This is how Hitler began. We need to, by any means possible, stop this move by INEC. I am very confident that what INEC has done will be reversed by the judiciary. That is why I said it is too early to talk about that now.

Will you be contesting in the presidential election in 2015?

That is if Nigeria survives till then. If you look at the trajectory of our development you will see that a nation moving on this part cannot survive. That is why the United States made a prediction that by 2015 or thereabout Nigeria would have become a failed state and disintegrate. That is because they see the part that we are toeing. The part that the PDP has mapped out can only lead to destruction. I believe people who say that there will be a revolution. If Nigeria is still here I will definitely contest. But I believe that there is going to be a new Nigeria. There is going to be a kind of revolution that will bring Nigeria to a place of awakening or renaissance of some sort.

A Santa Claus has been sacked from a garden centre grotto after he allegedly told children, ‘I’m not real, it’s your mum and dad‘.

The Father Christmas also told the three siblings about the US school massacre – before they burst into tears.

Their mother, Wendy Kennett, said what was supposed to be a fun festive day out turned into the ‘worst day of her life’ as her children lost their faith in Santa.

Mrs Kennett, who paid £5.99 per child, said: ‘I was totally furious. I now had three children in tears.’

A spokesman for the garden centre said the Santa was under the impression the boy was playing along for his siblings and wanted to thank him.

Notcutts spokesman Jim Hawker said: ‘We have accepted the customers’ version of events and have dismissed the Santa, apologised and refunded the family.”

The Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) boss, Banky W, and his international star, Wizkid, now have their twitter account verified.

Fans and the media are glad to finally see Wizkid’s twitter account with over 450,000 followers verified — other 8 parody accounts can be regarded officially useless.

Although, Banky W and Wizkid are the only two artistes from EME that have been verified for now. Up next should be Skales, Shaydee, Niyola and DJ Xclusive.

Nairaland General › Lagos State Blacklists 244 Hotels, Event Centres & Restaurants by mitchyy(op): 4:32pm On Dec 20, 2012

Here’s the full story as culled from PM News:

The Lagos State Government of Nigeria has blacklisted 244 hotels, event centres and restaurants in the state for failing to comply with the provisions of its Licensing Law and has also concluded plans to sue the defaulting facilities.

The government ordered all ministries, departments and agencies not to do any form of business with the 244 hotels, event centres and restaurants henceforth. Section 4, sub-section 1, 2 and 4 of the Hotel Licensing Law, Cap H6, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003 amended in 2010 says: “No person shall carry or keep a hotel in any premises in Lagos State without a license granted by the authority in respect of that premises under this law.”

Explaining why government decided to enforce the law, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe, Head of Service, said: “It has become imperative that operators of tourism and hospitality establishments in the state are expected to seek necessary registration from the authority and to comply with annual payment due for such facilities to the state government.

“However, it was observed with utmost dismay that a number of such establishments in the state have refused to comply with the provisions of the law, thereby depriving the state government of its revenue that could have been used in providing essential amenities to her teeming population.”

“In order to ensure enforcement and compliance with the Hotels Licensing Law, the state government has concluded all arrangements to charge defaulting hospitality establishments to court.”

A document from the office of the Lagos Head of Service identified the defaulting facilities as A.Y. Hotel, Country Guest House, D Rock Hotel, De Boss Garden Hotels and Suites, Embassy Court Hotel, De Next Hotel, Edge Water Hotel and Resorts, Fantasy Land, Garden View, Georges Chinese Cuisine, Lekki, and Grand Roses Continental Hotel. Others include Hotel Tropicana, La Scala Restaurant, Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Lekki Suites, Nicon Hotels Limited, Peninsular Hotel and Towers, Prime Chinese Restaurant, Regency Hall, Rochester Gardens, Precious Garden Hotel, Rex Hotel, Omission Crown Prince Hotel and Sabitex Hotel Limited.

A worker at a waste disposal site has found 10,000 yen cash in a stream of pulverised rubbish, police say.

“There were about a thousand (10,000) yen (N 18, 080, 000) bills that came out of a pulveriser unscathed,” a spokesman at the Asaminami police department in Hiroshima prefecture, in Japan’s west, said today.

He added that there were also 2300 fragments of bills destroyed by the machine at a municipal facility that processes large waste, such as cupboards and mattresses, that cannot be collected by regular garbage pick-up.

Police suspect the owner of the cash might have forgotten the money was there when he or she threw away some furniture.

Esquire Magazine‘s Sexiest woman alive 2011 Mila Kunis was photographed without makeup, as she was hanging out with her boyfriend, Ashton Kutcher. The two actors appeared to be very familiar with each other and this is a sign that they got accustomed with their relationship.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were seen walking Ashton’s dog on the streets of Los Angeles.

However, this was not the best day for Mila Kunis, as you can probably see in the photo. She was not wearing any makeup and she had dark circles under her eyes.

Mila and her boyfriend, Ashton, had casual outfits for their dog walk, and Mila didn’t even bothered to put on some makeup and arrange her hair. And, let’s face it, when you get the title of the sexiest woman alive, you don’t really want to leave your house looking like that, especially since you’re also a very famous Hollywood actress.

Do you think she deserved that title?

Nairaland General › Holiday Gift Guide: Important Gift-giving Tips & Tricks by mitchyy(op): 4:30pm On Dec 18, 2012
naijaPOSE
https://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/11/-2013-hedders-home.png
If you’ve ever experienced the feeling of giving a really fantastic gift, you know how amazing it can be. It’s so fulfilling and satisfying to know you picked just the right thing for that one special person. Similarly, when you receive a gift that’s exactly what you wanted/needed, you get a sense of how much thought the giver put into the gift. It seemed like several readers struggled trying to figure out what kind of gifts to give friends and family when it came to beauty products, particularly because they weren’t sure what colors to choose.

Here are some generalized tips and tricks when it comes to the art of great gift giving:

Little Touches Count

The little things can add tremendous value and appeal to your gift. Think about when someone takes an amazing gift but throws it into a paper bag at the last minute; or how about the time you totally forgot to grab a card and just shoved a gift in someone’s face? Fancy wrapping or expensive greeting cards are by no means necessary to a great gift, but remembering to take as much time in the presentation of the gift as you did in the acquisition of it is important. You can also keep an eye out for gifts that already come in festive packaging or bags.
Holidays come earlier and earlier each year, so you can find great bargains on wrapping paper at local discount stores as well as online ahopping stores. We have a whole lot of them in Nigeria. You can also stock up right after the holidays for the next year if you have some storage space!

It’s Not About the Money

I cannot emphasize it enough, but it is the thought that really counts, especially when you’re not gifting to a five-year-old who’s been dreaming of the latest gaming system for the past 364 days. But in all seriousness, the majority of people, and hopefully, your dearest friends and family, are not googling what you bought them to see how much you spent on them. Its just important to know your recipient and find a gift that would suit them. Don’t get caught up in the idea that more is better or that bigger is better! Keep gift ideas in mind all year round, even pricier ones (that are just outside your budget), because if you know your partner has their eye on some particular beauty or hair products, you can keep an eye out for price drops towards the second half of the year.

Plan Ahead

Never go shopping without a list. Know how much you are willing to spend on each item / person and have a clear idea of the type of gift you want to get someone. Schedule your shopping trip geographically

Sales, Sales, Sales

Stemming from looking out for deals on must-give gifts much earlier than the last two months of the year is taking advantage of sales, but I will caution you not to let them take advantage of you! Just because there’s a sale doesn’t mean you have to find something for someone there. December is the time for Friends & Family sales and events, several having already taken place, but there are more to come.

Use Social Media and Networking

So much of our lives are now online, from the photos and videos of our lives to our favorite interests. Many people have their favorite social networking sites that they use, and you can learn more about their various interests from a profile. I’m totally serious here! Sometimes you bond with someone over certain common interests (say, beauty), but you might not know their favorite music or movies. If you have friends or family members who are really active, you might be able to see what kind of things they’ve liked in the past couple of months on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. It’ll help give you an idea of where to start your search from!

Gift Guides from Everyone

Almost everyone has some sort of gift guide these days, and I don’t mean bloggers but major retailers and individual brands. Most of them have a section on their website for gift sets/value sets as well as gift guides broken out by price or “personality.” Perhaps you have a favorite brand you want a friend to experience or you know your friend’s favorite brand but you’ve never used anything by them; either way, you can peruse through recommendations from the brand as a great jumping off point.

This is possibly, no definitely, one of the dumbest stunts ever.

32 year old Tomas Paczkowski tried to impress his wife, Lila by doing his bit of housework. However, the man lived to regret his good deed as he managed to iron his face when the phone rang. Umm, epic fail!

Tomas who was ironing some clothes when his mobile phone went off, automatically put the device in his hand, ironically a hot iron, to his ears to respond to the call.

The man’s attention was on the boxing match that he was watching while doing the dreaded house job.

After feeling incredible pain, he rushed to the washroom to apply water on his burnt cheek and ears. To add insult to injury, he banged his head against bathroom door as well.

So, now he looks like one of the boxers who has lost his match. He has a bruised eye and a burnt cheek to show for his wee bit of multi-tasking at home.

Popular Nigerian Model Barbara Juliano has seen it all in the modelling world. Yes, indeed. She walks with a gait that promptly tells you she was born to be a model.

She is about six feet tall, slim but fleshy in the right places and possesses that unusual look of models.

In a recent interview, she talks about how it all started, her education, life as a model and her shoe company.

She reveals: “I started modelling in Paris at 17 while on holidays with a close friend. I was still in school then. He was a model and I used to accompany him to modelling agencies for casting.

I gradually joined in the model castings, did a few commercials on a part time basis and before I knew it, by 18, I was already a full time model. I did more jobs abroad than in Nigeria, modelling in London, Paris and Italy.

“I featured in quite a number of television commercials, editorial and magazine shoots for several high end products like Olay, Diesel jeans, Dolce and Gabbana, Lux etc. After giving in my all to modelling for 15 years, I gradually began my slow descent. This I did from 2005 through 2008 when I finally stopped. Then, I faced my shoe business.”

Explaining her decision for venturing into the retail of high end shoes, Barbara who runs Rose Barbara, a shoe company in Lagos, says it was borne out of a passion. Moreover, she considers modelling to go hand-in-hand with the art of wearing accessories.

“I believe that there is no modelling without shoes. No model goes on the runway barefooted. Their feet are always encased most times in stilettos which help to give one the needed gait. Oftentimes, the shoes are an advertisement on their own. So, I didn’t just start selling shoes, I became a personal shopper because people trusted my judgment on items that I picked out for them. That was after I stopped modelling.

“I am very particular about what I retail, I can tell the history of each pair of designer shoes that I retail. The modelling world really helped me to have a better understanding of what shoes are all about. My love for shoes knows no bounds. I collect shoes and I personally have a minimum of 200 pairs! That is how bad my obsession for shoes is. My husband sees my interest in the shoe business as an opportunity to acquire more pairs for myself and I don’t think he is far from the truth.”

Aside the shoe business, she has since diversified into luxurious hair retailing and also runs an African restaurant in London.

Born 37 years ago, Juliano who hails from Ikong, Cross River State, recalls her growing up years was fun filled especially as it spanned three cities— Cross Rivers State, Paris and Italy.

“Memories of my days in Cross Rivers State, especially during the holidays are so deeply etched that I sometimes crave for them. We would go to Obudu cattle ranch to have fun; horse riding, mountain climbing, and watch the water falls etc. My parents are avid believers in fun filled holidays.”

Turning out to be a success at her numerous ventures didn’t come to her on a platter of gold as she did have her trying period in her early days as a model.

“I dropped out from the University of Calabar, where I had enrolled to study Sociology. That was two years to my graduating year. I wanted to face my modelling career squarely,” she reminisces.

But with a father, who is a medical doctor and a mother who is an English graduate from Oxford University, didn’t she face stiff opposition at home?

She replies: “Nigeria is one country with people who are very particular about paper qualifications. Naturally, there was an outcry when I took that decision. My parents were to say the least, miffed at my action. I was strongly opposed but I was hell bent on pursuing a modelling career because that was what I loved and wanted to do at that time.

“I did all I could to assuage their feelings by constantly showing them my finished works. I wanted to prove that I had retained my decency while still modelling. But they had their beliefs and concluded that I was fooling around. It took a while before they finally came around to give me their blessings. I am persuaded that modelling is innate because even as a little child, the traits were very evident in me. I sometimes wonder where I got the passion for modelling from considering my background. My other family members are known for being quite cerebral. Ironically, my younger sister is now toeing my path.”

Now, she is in her parents’ shoes and feels what they felt many years back. Now, older and wiser, she constantly insists that her younger sister completes her education even as she (Barbara) also plans to complete her education.

“I have to, it isn’t like I need it right away but I will definitely. I believe I owe it to myself. When I decide to, it will be in a streamlined course in luxury management since that is my area of core competence,” she explains.

Barbara would tell you she prefers white men whenever issues of romance are raised.

“I prefer white men because I think they are more loving and respectful to women. I was once married to a French man for eight years but it didn’t work out. Now, I am married to the love of my life— an Italian. I have been with my husband for four years but we have been married for two years with a daughter. We met in Milan, Italy. He is a very understanding and humble person and I consider myself a very lucky woman to have him as a husband.”

Asked if she has any plan to give back to society through mentorship, Barbara quips that is no longer on her plate. At least currently but could be considered in the near future.

“I once imparted knowledge from my wealth of experience to young up and coming models while I was still a model and even set up an academy called, Amazon Modelling Academy. I shut down when I stopped modelling,” she says.

Models are considered stylish. Not far from one, she defines her style as unique but corrects that, “I will never be caught dead in a mini skirt or dress!”

She is a designer freak too. Hear her collection: “For shoes, I currently love Zannoti, Valentino and Cavalli. I am not very particular about the designers of the dresses I wear, as long as they are beautiful dresses.

For bags, it is Channel and Birkins. Oh! I love bags too and I have lost count of the regular bags that I have. I do have about 14 high end bags like Hermes Birkins, Channels etc. In fact, I once spent €68,000 for a hand bag. After shoes, my fashion fetish is bags.”

Her life’s philosophy is simple: Respect for people and loyalty. “Sometimes I wish I didn’t have friends having gone through some disappointments in life with friends”, she concludes.
