Politics / Ekiti Will Produce President For Nigeria In 2023 - Afenifere by miteolu(m): 7:02pm On Mar 08, 2019
The National Leader of Pan Yoruba group, Afenifere, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, and an elder statesman and historian, Prof. Banji Akintoye, have urged Yoruba people to brace up for the presidency in 2023.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti at a colloquium marking the 110th posthumous birthday of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Afenifere leader said Yoruba people must unite to ensure that the geopolitical zone produces the next president.

The 94-year-old Fasanmi, who made a request that Yoruba people should support a candidate who shares the visions of Awolowo, publicly endorsed Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as a possible candidate for the 2023 presidency, citing his decision on the fact that “Fayemi embodies the visions that Awolowo strived to actualize for Nigerians”.

Delivering a paper titled: New Engagements by Progressives,” Prof. Akintoye said Ekiti people could become leaders in the African continent by “investing in the knowledge economy using our education advantage”.

Akintoye, who recalled the huge investment of Awolowo in education, stated that “the progressives idea is the only way to make the people prosper”, adding that Fayemi has the right ideas which are similar to Awo’s.

While stating that the 2023 presidency is not just about pushing for a Yoruba man, the professor of History said it was high time Ekiti people rose up and take the lead because Nigeria needs the values of hard work, excellence and integrity, which they are known for.

Akintoye equally called on Governor Fayemi to rise to the task ahead, stressing that Ekiti people must not let themselves “be intimidated by what exists” but push for “what is right”.

He said: “Decent people of Ekiti should take the lead and help reposition the nation.

“I want to say that in 2023, we Ekiti want to aspire for what we have never aspired for.

“We want to produce the next president of Nigeria.

“We know that it takes the Ekiti character to rebuild Nigeria.

“Kayode (Fayemi) has the right ideas.

“He knows what to do in the management of our affairs.

“We must have the tenacity to push for what we think is right.

“We should not let ourselves be intimidated by what exists.”

While speaking on Nigerian political leadership, Akintoye described Awolowo as a very “influential leader with constructive ideas about how to move Nigeria along the path of progress, success, prosperity and even power”.

Akintoye said Awolowo’s progressive idea focused on a Nigeria that would be orderly, stable and offer increasing economic and social opportunities for all its citizens.

He said: “The economic and social details of progressivism are also well known.

“They include programmes such as free primary and secondary education for all, high quality medical service, free medical service to weaker categories of citizens, gainful employment for all, job skills programmes to qualify every person for employment, good quality transportation, communication, water supply, and electricity supply, integrated rural development to take the benefits of modern life and modern resources to farming and to rural communities.”

In his remarks, Governor Fayemi said it was high time Nigerians raised the standard of development above that which was laid by Awolowo; adding that the former Premier had been the yardstick for measuring the political success of political leaders in decades.

The governor said it was pathetic that the nation is endowed with human and natural resources but has not been able to take the lead in the past years; adding that it was time to do away with “arrested development”.

Fayemi, who also charged Ekiti leaders to rise up for the task ahead, stated that the state should not play the second fiddle in the affairs of progressives in Nigeria.

He said: “We have competence; we have human resources and everything that can help us survive as a nation.

“That was what Chief Awolowo represents today, in Nigeria, we have not seen any statesman like Awolowo.

“That’s why any little thing we do, we make reference to him.

“He is the standard by which we judge development.

“It is time that we raised the standard now.

“We carry the burden of the successor generation and we must deliver to our people.

“This is the time to make concrete improvement in the lives of our people to banish poverty from our people.

“For long, we have not fought for what belongs to us because we are reticent, we don’t want to project ourselves, because we don’t want to be called noise makers.

“Sometimes purposeful noise is strategic communication.

“Awo was not just a politician, he was a public intellectual.

“We must not forget this if we want a developmental democracy.

“The elite should drive and support programmes that aim at lifting the masses because that’s what Awo stood for.

“He was always on the side of the people.

“That is the duty we owe our people.”

Politics / Election: This Saturday, Atiku Will Cry – Adams Oshiomhole by miteolu(m): 6:30am On Feb 14, 2019
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole on Tuesday declared that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will weep over the outcome of the presidential election billed for Saturday.

Oshiomhole made the declaration while speaking during APC presidential campaign in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He also reacted to the court ruling with refused the party from fielding a governorship candidate in the forthcoming election.

The APC National Chairman assured members of the party that the APC will “ensure that justice is done” as they will “remain resolute.”

According to him, “I appreciate the fighting spirit of APC supporters in Rivers. I’m impressed that despite the efforts to demoralized you, you came. I salute your fighting spirit.

“Those who smile in the early hour will find out that at the need of life they will cry. There is so much effort to prevent our party, in Zamfara we are fighting to have the right of the people and here in Rivers it’s the same but I want to say our right may be frozen but we will not give up.

“Those oppressing should not laugh too early, don’t laugh at the crocodile until you cross the last river, PDP may be laughing now but they will weep on Saturday.

“Saturday’s election is between a president that is determined to protect our sovereignty as a nation, fight to prevent stealing and a president who want to return Nigeria to where Buhari took it away from, Atiku promised to share loot among his friends, give amnesty to looters.

Politics / Any Member Of APC Working Against Our Success Will Fail - Osinbajo by miteolu(m): 7:24am On Feb 13, 2019
The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday reacted to the violence that rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally held in Ogun State on Monday.

Mr Osinbajo said any member of the APC working against the success of the party in the forthcoming general elections is like ”a bad cutlass with one (sharp) edge”.

Mr Osinbajo stated this during a town hall meeting held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ago Iwoye, Abdulrazak Adenugba, in the course of his campaign tour to the state.

A campaign rally organised by the APC for President Muhammadu Buhari in the state on Monday turned violent when thugs hurled stones and sachet water in the direction of seated dignitaries. Security operatives scurried frantically to prevent Mr Buhari from being hit.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun, an ally of President Buhari, has been having a running battle with the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, over who flies the party’s governorship flag in the forthcoming polls.

The crisis got worse after Mr Amosun’s favourite to be his successor lost out in the politics of the APC primaries.

The governor blamed Mr Oshiomhole, ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu and ex-Ogun governor, Segun Osoba, for his ordeal.

He then vowed to work against Dapo Abiodun, who is now the APC governorship candidate for next year’s election and has the backing of Messrs Tinubu and Osoba.

Since then, the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee has dissolved the Ogun executives of the APC and announced a caretaker committee headed by Yemi Sanusi.

Ayobami Olubori was announced as secretary and Tunde Oladunjoye publicity secretary of the committee.

Mr Osinbajo, who was also at the rally on Monday, said despite the incident, the electorate should vote massively for the party and its candidates.

The official said the APC, is the only party that has the capacity to improve the lives of the people.

”Vote for APC alone in all the elective offices because we don’t know of those who are meddling or promoting another party. Anyone caught in such an act can be described as ‘bad cutlasses’.

Mr Osinbajo also said, “Vote for APC alone in all the elective offices, remember that a cutlass should have only one sharp edge. Anything short of that makes such cutlass a bad one.

“You need to vote for APC because even the most hardened enemy of President Muhammadu Buhari knows that he is not a thief nor is he corrupt. And secondly, you have to vote for us because of the many things that we have in stock for you.

“Those things include The Npower scheme which presently has a capacity of 500,000 which will be increased to 1.5 million when we win the coming election. Another is the Tradermoni and market money scheme which is targeted at empowering market traders. Whenever you pay back, the money given to you, another will be given to you. Another is employment for the youth which is very important among others,” he said.

Politics / Christian Group Tells FG To Probe Osinbajo Helicopter Crash by miteolu(m): 8:46pm On Feb 02, 2019
A religious organisation under the banner of Coalition of Christian Groups For Good Governance (Nigeria and Diaspora), on Saturday called on the Federal Government to immediately probe the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash involving the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the chopper crew in Kabba, Kogi State.

In a statement by its President, Rev. Daniel Kadzai, the coalition maintained that similar crashes involving prominent Christians in the country had occurred without any sort of investigation as to ascertain their causes.

He recalled the case of late Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State, former National Security Adviser (NSA), late Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi and late Assistant Inspector-General of Police, John Haruna “who lost their lives in mysterious Helicopter crashes.”

Kadzai, the immediate-past President of YOWICAN – Christian Association of Nigeria (Youth Wing), added: “Till date, nothing had been said about the investigation into the Helicopter crashes of these great people. This has raised serious suspicion on the frequent crash involving top Christians in Nigeria. This particular one should be thoroughly investigated.”

The coalition also sought for prayers on behalf of the Vice President, who, it said, had escaped plane crash twice within seven months.

“While we call on Christians all over the country to pray fervently against any form of manipulations against the Vice President, Pastor Yemi Osibanjo, we reiterate our demand thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

“From the body language of VP Osinbajo and other Christians in government, it is obvious that they are either under threat or under some powers in Aso Rock. Hence, they need the prayers of all Christians in Nigeria for spiritual deliverance,” he stated.

Last week, COCGOG protested against the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, with a call on all Christians nationwide to “be at alert and await further directives”, the organisation

Kadzai had appealed to the international community to prevail on Buhari to “toe the part of honour and reverse the ambiguous adventure.”

Politics / Next Level: We Are Coming With Blue Economy – Rotimi Amaechi by miteolu(m): 11:59am On Jan 31, 2019
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting blue economy for safe and sustainable use of the continent’s vast sea and ocean resources.

The minister disclosed this in a statement signed by Muhammad Idris, the Head of Press, Ministry of Transportation, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the blue economy is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihood and jobs and ocean ecosystem health.

The blue economy encompasses many activities including renewable energy, fisheries, marine transport, waste management, climate change and tourism.

The statement quoted the minister as saying that maritime has a key role to play in the alleviation of poverty and wealth creation, as it constitutes an integral source of income to the economy.
He said that the maritime sector has generated employment for many in the developing world.

On the issue of insecurity plaguing the maritime sector, the minister explained that there is an ongoing agreement with an international company to provide water protection.

He said that there was a bill before the National Assembly, saying that the passage of the bill would help checkmate some of these challenges.

Amaechi said that the bill is an Act to suppress piracy, and other unlawful acts at sea.

He described the maritime sector, as ‘a cheap and reliable’ means of transportation, which needs to be harnessed in the sector.

Politics / Buhari Supports 65-year Retirement Age For Teachers by miteolu(m): 7:17pm On Dec 13, 2018
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Thursday said the Muhammadu Buhari administration was in support of increasing the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

The minister made this known at a public hearing on the need to insulate teachers from the retirement age for public servants, organised by the House Joint Committee on Basic Education and Public Service.

The minister said that it was as a means of improving the standard of basic and secondary education in the country.

Adamu informed the house joint committee that the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) had submitted the new retirement age proposal to the ministry and the National Assembly for approval.
He said that the drive was based on the need for better performance by teachers and the desire to have quality teachers in the nation’s schools.

“Nigerian teachers to some extent require a reasonable retirement age like their counterparts in India, Canada, Belgium that have increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 years.

“We are appealing to the House to approve the bill because the ministry is in support of increasing the retirement age of teachers,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman House Committee on Basic Education, Rep Zakari Mohammed, said that the bill was being considered for passage.

Politics / INEC Needs 800,000 Vehicles For Smooth Polls In 2019 - FRSC by miteolu(m): 1:39pm On Dec 11, 2018
The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would need about 800,000 vehicles to conduct high-free general elections in 2019, Native Reporters has learnt.

Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja at a National Stakeholders Forum on Elections organised by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room.

Represented by Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Victor Nwokolo, he said apart from vehicles, camels, donkeys, motorcycles and tricycles would be part of the number of vehicles required for the 2019 elections.

He disclosed that the commission would inspect the vehicles 24 hours to the elections to ensure their roadworthiness for the exercise.

He added that the INEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to ensure safety and availability of the vehicles.

INEC Commissioner, Festus Okoye, who represented the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, disclosed that incident forms would not be used during the elections to conform to global best practices in elections.

Convener of Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Clement Nwankwo, charged citizens and civil society groups not to be intimidated by politicians, or the ruling elite, but remain courageous in ensuring a transparent and credible elections next year.

Meanwhile, a non-governmental organisation, Action Aid, has cautioned that vote buying would threaten the 2019 elections.

Action Aid Country Representative Ene Obi stated this during its activities to mark the World Anti-corruption celebration through its Strengthening Citizens Resistance Against Prevalence of Corruption, (SCRAP-C) project.

Director of Finance Action Aid Oluwole Elegbinde, said the fight against corruption was a collective responsibility of both the government and the citizens.
