Global powers are deliberately blocking Nigeria’s moves to acquire needed armament to end terrorism and insurgency, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in Makurdi on Monday.

Speaking with newsmen on the side-line of a visit he paid to Benue State’s Gov. Samuel Ortom, the minister said the action of the world powers was deleterious and frustrating Nigeria’s resolve to end the twin-menace as well as end extremism.

He said notwithstanding the frustrations, the Federal Government would fight terrorism and insurgency to a logical conclusion.

“We will never stop protecting lives and livelihoods. However, we must also understand that we are dealing with terrorists who are financed globally and we also need more support from global partners.

“For instance, Nigeria had made attempts to acquire better and more effective platforms to deal with the terrorists, but for one reason or the other we have been denied this platforms, he said.

The minister also condemned the “mindless killing of innocent Nigerian farmers by extremists in Borno last week’’.

“What actually happened in Borno was quite unfortunate, but we also have to look at the strategy of the terrorists.

“Terrorists use media and publicity as oxygen and so when they go on this kind of mindless killings, a dying terrorist group will suddenly spring to life.

“This does not mean the government is not doing enough.

“Terrorists everywhere have the same concept which is a group of people who are extremists and do not believe that you and I should be alive,’’ he said.

The minister also said the Federal Government had done so much in addressing security challenges facing Benue State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister’s visit to Makurdi was for the official handing over of the North Central Zone campus of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR)

Alhaji Mohammed commended the state government for its commitment to the development of tourism and hospitality for improved revenue generation.

He said that tourism and hospitality sector contributed 4.8 per cent to Nigeria’s GDP and employed more than one million people.

The minister said tourism and hospitality sector ranked second only to agriculture as largest employer of labour in the country.

Alhaji Mohammed assured that the North Central campus of NIHOTOUR would train personnel in the sector for optimal output. (NAN)

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Friday met with the President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governor however told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that it would be immoral for him to return to the All Progressives Congress.

Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party beat Osagie Ize-Iyamu of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress and others to win the last Saturday’s governorship election in his state.

He had dumped the APC for the PDP when the ruling party disqualified him from participating in its primary election.

There have been concerns that having won the election on the platform of the PDP, he might return to the APC.

But the governor who met with the President alongside his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, said it would be immoral to do so.

Obaseki and Shuaibu were joined on what they called the “thank you visit” to Buhari by their spouses and some lawmakers from the state.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, yesterday, described President Muhammadu Buhari as a stabilising force, whose honest leadership and visionary economic policies are stabilising the country and creating a promising, sustainable self-reliant economy at a most trying time in the country.

Uzodinma, who was speaking while a delegation of the Coalition of Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders of Nigeria, led by its Chairman, Mohamadu Salihu Danlami, paid him a courtesy visit in Owerri, said it was convenient for people to rail on the heightened insecurity situation in the country, forgetting that there was a time Boko Haram was occupying more than 24 LGAs in the country.

The governor submitted that the President’s honest management of resources and selflessness  has helped, in no small way, in stabilising the polity and in putting the economy on the path  of recovery and self reliance, adding that but for the President’s manifest honest leadership and relentless onslaught against corruption, the country would have long gone under.

Uzodinma said unlike in the past when the military were ill-equipped, the President has strengthened the security architecture with the modern weapons to defend the country, with Buhari’s regular interaction with security chiefs demonstrating that he is personally interested in how they carry out their assignments.

On the economy, the governor said the recent World Bank report giving Nigerian economy a pass mark in growth has confirmed that the government’s economic policies were yielding results and commended the President for his initiative in improving on national revenue by exploring other natural resources outside crude oil.
