The National Youth Service Corps authorities are reportedly processing a N1m insurance for the family of late Channels TV reporter, Precious Owolabi, killed in last week’s violent clash between the police and Shiites in Abuja.  

Amid calls for an upward review of the insurance cover by the Federal Government, it was learnt that the N1m insurance was usually paid to any late corps member’s next of kin.

“The next of kin of any corps member who dies during the national service will be paid an insurance benefit of N1m. “The processing will cover the death certificate and other documentation.

There is an insurance company that handles it for the NYSC.“All the corps members usually fill forms indicating their next of kin, names, addresses and other contact details.

So, the insurance company has the duty to inform the next of kin. There is no corps member who died during the national service that was not paid the insurance package.“For Owolabi, the processing is ongoing. As we speak, the insurance company might have been notified.

The same was done for Okanlawon Ibrahim, the corps member who died on duty as an ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State on March 29. So, it is our standard practice” an NYSC source told Punch.

The late Channels TV reporter was buried on Thursday July 25th, after his corpse was conveyed in an official ambulance to his parents in Zaria, Kaduna State.

President Muhammadu Buhari has pledged Nigeria’s continued support for Libya’s quest to regain political and security stability.

‘‘We will do our best to help Libya stabilise,’’ the President told the Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, at a bilateral meeting on the margins of the AU Summit in Niamey, Niger Republic, on Sunday.


The President, who discussed recent developments in the North African country as well as bilateral issues between Nigeria and Libya with Mr. Al-Sarraj, noted that there were over 6000 Nigerians in Libya, who see Libya as a gateway to Europe.

Buhari said the humanitarian crisis arising from insurgency and the drying up of Lake Chad, which has affected over 30 million people in the region who depend on the Lake for farming, fishing and animal husbandry have forced some Nigerians to defy the desert to make perilous journeys across the Mediterranean and the Sahara Desert to Europe.

Also, in a separate audience with the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, Buhari stressed the role the international community needed to play in recharging the Lake, noting that the financial cost was beyond the affected countries.

The President decried the menace of terrorism in the Sahel countries, noting that the instability in Libya has been a negative force on the Sahel.

The Head of Libya’s GNA told the President that there had been a lot of deaths and injuries in his country, pledging however that his government was determined to put an end to the situation.

‘‘The aggression must stop. The solution is not military alone we also believe in diplomacy. We are also victims of terrorism, just like Nigeria,’’ he said.

Al-Sarraj declared that Libya contributed a lot to the establishment and survival of the AU, adding that it was now time for Africa to reciprocate.

On her part, the Deputy Secretary-General told the President that the growing security challenges in Africa were adversely affecting development and undermining the attainment of Sustaining Development Goals (SDGs).

She said the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres will host the SDGs Summit during the high-level week of the 74th Session of the General Assembly in September, and will use the occasion to call for a road map for a decade of delivery of the sustainable development targets.

The Deputy Secretary-General also congratulated President Buhari for signing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement at the AU Summit in Niamey, saying ‘‘the entire world was waiting for Nigeria’’.

Kogi Government along side NEWMAP on monday signed multi-billion naira contracts for the stabilisation, reclamation and Channeling of Adumu and Agassa erosion sites in Olamaboro and Okene local government areas respectively towards ensuring a lasting solution to concerns of environmental degradation in those areas, Native Reporters has learnt

The agreement was signed by Governor Bello, the NEWMAP representatives, alongside the contractors at the Governor's office, Lokoja.

Governor Bello noted that his government cared for the people of the State by ensuring that the environment where they lived in was safe and conducive for them to thrive

He emphasized that Kogi State under his watch has a culture of proper care for the environment based on the fact that such action determines how the environment reacts to human activities.

The Governor thanked the world bank who have provided huge financial support towards ensuring that that issues of environmental degradation in the State and other parts of the country was reduced to the barest minimum while he urged them to do more.

Governor Bello also lauded the Federal Government through its Federal Ministry of Environment for ensuring that concerns on environment were taken with utmost seriousness.

The Governor urged the contractors to mobilise to the site on time and deliver within the 15months time frame provided for in the details of the contracts

The Project Coordinator NEWMAP Barrister ladi Ahmed Jatto, in her opening remarks asserted that the Governor has shown so much concern towards solving environment issues and despite allocation dwindling of the State, he released 900,000 million Counterpart fund to facilitate and fast track the Engineering Designs

She stated that after a rigorous and meticulous bidding process two firms namely NIGERPET Structures Limited and NAEL and BIN HARMAL NBHH/HARTLAND were awarded the contracts.

Information gathered by Native Reporters revealed that Civil works for Agassa Erosion site was One Billion, Three Hundred and Thirty-Six Million, Seven Hundred and Ninety Eight thousand, One Hundred and Thrity Four Naira, Four Kobo (#1,336,798,134.04) while the one for Adumu Erosion site was awarded for Two Billion, Six Hundred and Thirteen Million, Seven Hundred and Twenty Six thousand, two hundred and Eighty Four naira, Forty Kobo (2, 613, 726,284.40).

The Project Coordinator noted that based on the Governor’s directives, NEWMAP in recent times awarded the contract for the Engineering Design of eight erosion sites which were: Ugwolawo Erosion site, Ogane Aji erosion site.

Others were Ankpa Gully Erosion Site, Etahi Gully Site, Ozuri Gully site, Omigbo River Channelization, Greater Lokoja water scheme, Afor Gam- Gam site and the permanent site of the Federal University, Felele all spread across the three senatorial district of the State.

She pointed out that the contractor had submitted the draft design for the greater Lokoja water work, which has been sent to Federal Control Office in Abuja for review.

A gorilla has been accused of swallowing the N6.8 million in the Kano Zoological Gardens, according to BBC Pidgin.

A finance officer in the zoo was quoted as saying the gorilla “sneaked into their office” and carted away the money before swallowing it.

TheCable could not immediately confirm this incident which was said to have happened during the Sallah celebrations.

Umar Kobo, the managing director of the zoo, confirmed that the money is missing and that the issue is being investigated.

“The issue is under investigations for now and I don’t want to say anything on the matter, many journalists have come to meet me but I don’t want to talk anything. What I can confirm is that money is missing,” he told the BBC Pidgin.

TheCable could not reach Abdullahi Haruna, police spokesman in Kano, for comments as of time this report was filed.

He was, however, quoted as confirming that 10 persons, including those on duty when the money went missing, have been arrested.

“Yes, it is true that money from five days of Sallah festivities is missing from the Kano zoo,” he reportedly said, adding: “As at now, we have arrested 10 members of staff of the zoo including the security man and those working in the finance unit.

This is not the first time animals have been involved in related issues in Nigeria.

In February last year, Philomina Chieshe, a sales clerk in the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state, alleged that a snake swallowed N36m, being proceeds from sale of scratch card.

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transport, has said that what is being played in Nigeria is ‘Chop I Chop’ politics.

Amaechi stated this when he fielded questions from reporters on the state of the nation.

He said that the fact President Muhammadu Buhari was “trying to stop the chop I chop kind of politics has not been easy with politicians.”

According to the former Rivers State Governor, “As much as I can, I am trying to avoid issues that would hurt people. The politics we are used to in Nigeria is what I would describe as ‘Chop I Chop politics.’

“So they gang-up against the President in PDP because the free money is no longer there.

“History is the study of past events to discuss how to deal with the present and the future.


“We are not even blaming Goodluck or Obasanjo but we are stating the history. I was part of that administration lest you forget.

“What we are saying is that if the money that was kept in the savings was utilized for these infrastructures, why would President Buhari ask Rotimi Amaechi to go focus on Lagos to Ibadan rail line? So we are compelled to start afresh.

“Majority of infrastructures in Nigeria was built in General Yakubu Gowon’s regime, a bit of it was built by Obasanjo and the 3rd mainland bridge was built by General Babangida.

“So tell me what else we have done as a country? Port Harcourt -Enugu road bad, Lagos – Kano road bad, Ibadan – Lagos road bad.

“So assuming the blame game they accused us of is true, we are not blaming and not working.

“I drove on Lagos – Ibadan road to Abeokuta, we are completing it. By the time we finish Lagos – Ibadan railway to Abeokuta,

“it will become an alternative route because the number of people that died on that road is unimaginable.”

Concerned members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi have urged the party’s national leadership to ensure a level playing ground for all aspirants for the governorship election by organising direct primaries.
Mr Jubril Yusuf, Coordinator of the group made the call on Monday in Abuja when he led some protesters to the party’s national secretariat.

He said direct primaries would give the party’s stakeholders in Kogi the opportunity to choose who would pick its ticket in the state election slated for November, NAN reports.

Yusuf said that the protesters were at the party’s national secretariat to place before the public the plight of the people of Kogi since the assumption of the incumbent governor in office, in February 2016.

“The protest is also to call on men of conscience to put pressure on the party’s leadership to provide a level playing ground for all aspirants for the state governorship election.

“The living condition in the state is worrisome. Since February 2015, payment of salaries and pensions of Civil Servants had become optional and not a priority.
“Workers and pensioners in the state are currently being owed many months of unpaid salaries and pensions.

“It is only when workers are paid that other citizens in the state will be able to sell their goods and services.

“Consequently, the economy of the state is reeling on the ground, many businesses have folded and potential investors have been avoiding the state like a plague. Virtually all the indices about the state are negative,” Yusuf said.
According to him, most of the state’s Civil Servants now borrow money to pay school fees of their children, pay medical bills when necessary, and pay for their house rents.

He also said that most Civil Servants in the state, had withdrew their children from private schools, adding that the state of public schools in the state was nothing to write home about.

“It is common place in the state to see school pupils playing around school premises while their teachers sit down in groups bemoaning their fate for non-payment of salaries,” he said.
Yusuf alleged that the present administration in the state has not been able to commence and complete one project for over three years.

He noted that the deplorable situation of the state would have been a different narrative if the problem was due to lack of funds.

He maintained that from the bailout fund, Paris refund to statutory allocations from the Federal Government, and its internally generated revenue, the state government was expected to do better to impact the lives of the people.
“As at the end of February this year, that is after 38 months in office, the state government has received at least N344 billion.

“This covered statutory allocations, internally generated revenue, allocation to Local Government, bailout, Paris club funds as well as refunds on road construction by the previous government,” he said.

He added that it was unfortunate that in spite the non-performance of the state governor, he wanted to seek a second term in office, saying that this should not be allowed to happen.
“The primary purpose of a government and any government for that matter, is the welfare of the people, Gov. Yahaya Bello’s government has abandoned its primary purpose.

“It has defeated itself and has no reason being in power, he should be voted out and replaced with a purposeful and people oriented government,” Yusuf added.

The National Assembly Joint Committee has raised concern over Federal Inland Revenue Service’s (FIRS) 2019 projected estimate of non-oil revenue tax collection of N146.54 billion.

The co-chairman of the committee, John Enoh, and other members of the committee raised the concern at FIRS’s budget defence in Abuja on Monday.

The committee sought to know why the 2018 approved estimate was N153.85 billion, while the 2019 projected cost stood at N146.54, amounting to 4.75 per cent decrease.

On personnel cost, the committee asked why the service was proposing 14.6 per cent increase in number of staff from 7, 854 in 2018 to 9000 staff in 2019.

It equally demanded explanation for the “proposed N160 million meant to sew drivers’ uniforms, N825 million for refreshment and security vote of N250 million among others.”
The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Tunde Fowler while presenting the budget proposal, noted that the proposed increase in staff strength was due to recruitment of staff scheduled in 2019.

He further explained that N160 million was earmarked to sew uniforms for the 850 drivers of the service as part of effort to make them fit properly into the structure.

That means each driver’s uniform will cost over N188,000.

Also, Mr Fowler said the amount earmarked for security vote was meant to attend to some security issues, particularly those not receipted for.
“The achievement of 2019 budget will be driven by increase oil and non-oil revenue tax collection.

“The service in realisation of this responsibility and challenges of doing manual collection will continue to implement automated tax collection for the critical sectors of the economy notably telecommunications, airlines and financial institutions.

“The deployment of these platforms is at no cost to the service and the consultants will only be rewarded on increased revenue generation.

“There will be increased enforcement activities nationwide to bring more tax payers into the tax net and increase compliance level,’’ Mr Fowler said.

The national vice chairman, south south, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ntufam Hilliard Eta, has reportedly reacted to the Supreme Court's judgement which nullified nullified all votes cast for the party in the 2019 elections in Zamfara state.

According to Daily Trust, Eta said the party has no option than to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court.

the Supreme Court's judgement affected the governorship as well as state/federal legislative polls in Zamfara state.

Eta, who reportedly spoke with newsmen on Friday, May 24, after a meeting of the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja, said the party had learnt some lessons from the Zamfara scenario. He said concerning the judgement: “It’s a sad day for every member of the APC. It’s a very sad day for us.”

Asked if the party mismanaged the crisis, he said: “I don’t think the party mismanaged the crisis in our Zamfara chapter. We don’t have any option than to accept the judgment of the Supreme Court and go ahead and learn some lessons from it. That is what I can say for now.”
