Here is the opinion of Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji on the ongoing squabble between President Buhari and his spouse Aisha Buhari and I concur: "If you think Aisha Buhari is speaking because of the hardship across the land then you are yet to understand her interest. You think she really cares about any of us? She and her people are not "chopping" as anticipated. If the president had given her access to the till, you know she'll care less that there is hardship anywhere. It is all about self, and her entourage. This outburst is clearly an outcome of deeply suppressed personal discontent. Secondly, politics aside, who among you will tolerate a wife running her mouth in public this way? Is she is a politician? Did we elect her do do anything on our behalf? Is she an appointed statutory adviser? Her simple job is to be a good wife to Mr. President. Give him the necessary emotional support an handle family affairs now that his hands are full, minding her damn private business as beautician and whatever the heck business she runs...and take that her daughter off our affairs and screens too. If she cannot effectively get her husband's full attention and manipulate him to do her bidding, then she is a disappointment to women folk. It exposes her own weakness as as wife. Sophisticated wives get their husbands to do things with excitement. On this, I say kudos to Baba for resisting the urge to be swindled into putting personal interests of Aisha and her entourage ahead of his convictions to run Nigeria like he belongs to everybody." |
Punch Newspaper reports that an Abuja mansion belonging to former Chief of Defence Staff Alex Badeh has been converted into a federal government office building. AN 1.1bn mansion seized from the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.), has been converted to an office to be used by the Federal Government, The PUNCH has learnt. Our correspondent, who visited the property located on Plot 6 Ogun River Crescent, Maitama, a highbrow area in Abuja, learnt that the property is being used by the Presidential Committee on the North-East Intervention headed by Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, a former Minister of Defence. Our correspondent observed that the warning, ‘EFCC, Keep Off!’ which was written in red ink on the fence, had been wiped off. However, a second building (although uncompleted) seized from Badeh, which is located directly opposite the one converted by the Federal Government, still has the EFCC inscription on its fence. Some gardeners and other domestic workers were seen clearing the grass and sweeping the compound when our correspondent visited the place. Our reporter, who entered into the main building, noticed that the rooms had been converted into offices while desks had been set up at strategic positions. When our correspondent approached one of the workers, he said, “The property was given to us by the government to work. I know that the EFCC seized the property some months ago but it was given to us to work.” The EFCC is prosecuting Badeh alongside a firm, Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, on 10 counts of money laundering bordering on alleged fraudulent removal of about N3.97bn from the Nigerian Air Force account. A former Director of Finance and Account of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Aliyu Yishau (retd.),who is a prosecution witness against Badeh, had informed the court that while Badeh was the Chief of Air Staff, he routinely helped Badeh to divert the sum of N558.2m by converting it to its dollar equivalent. He said he personally helped Badeh to buy the N1.1bn property which has now been converted to Federal Government’s use. He had said, “Sometime in January 2013, when I was taking the normal amount to him (Badeh) in dollars, he directed that we should pay for the house. So, he brought out the balance in dollars and made up the equivalent of N1.1bn.” The EFCC lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had told the court that the EFCC searched the property and recovered $1m in cash. Jacobs said although Badeh had denied ownership of the property, his belongings, including photographs, were found in it during a search by the operatives of the commission. Our correspondent learnt that the decision to convert Badeh’s property may be connected to the Federal Government’s plan to convert seized properties to government use and save cost. It will be recalled that the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, had disclosed at the opening of a meeting with the members of the National Steering Committee of the Efficiency Unit on June 10, 2016, that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government was planning to convert some of the seized properties to offices in a bid to save money spent on rent. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10153871874092703&substory_index=0&id=96184337702 |
Many traders and travellers were feared killed on Wednesday as an improvised explosive suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents went off outside a car park in Maiduguri, Borno state. The explosion went off at a park popularly called Mun Garage at about 9a.m. in the capital city of the north-east Nigerian state. A witness who said he was lucky to survive the incident said he saw about a dozen bodies covered with blood littering the scene. “I thank God for sparing my life,,” said Usman Kachalla, a local trader. “I don’t know if it is a suicide bomber, we just heard the blast and I saw my self covered with dust.” An official of the Civilian-JTF, Alhaji Khalil, confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES. “Yes there was a blast early this morning outside Muna Garage along Mafa road. We have sent our operatives down there; but we have not confirmed the casualty,” said the Civilian-JTF official. Freelance journalist, Ahmad Salkida, yesterday said he met the Chibok girls, who have been in the captivity of Boko Haram, during negotiations on how to rescue them. Though he did not give the exact date he met with the abductees, Salkida said he met the girls and their captors at the instance of the federal government. “At least, today, I am probably the only one who has gone to location of swaps with detainees and I set my eyes on the girls in their early days in captivity, under a presidential cover to negotiate,” he said. Salkida is known for his access to Boko Haram and has been reporting on the Boko Haram insurgency for more than 10 years. Salkida, who had been in the United Arab Emirates on self-exile since 2013, recently returned to Nigeria after he, with two others were declared wanted by the Nigerian Army for having “links” with the Boko Haram and refusing to divulge certain information. In an email to Daily Trust on Sunday yesterday, Salkida faulted the narratives of the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and President Muhammadu Buhari’s biographer, Professor John Paden, on why the rescue of the Chibok girls remains problematic. Salkida said it was not true that the leadership of Boko Haram demanded 5 billion Euros (roughly N1.7 trillion) as ransom for the release of the abducted girls as stated by Paden in his book “Muhammadu Buhari: The challenge of leadership in Nigeria. He said as the chief negotiator, he was at a loss as to why the information minister addressed a conference where he shifted the blame of the failed swap mission on the Boko Haram. He said the government and the insurgents had their shortcomings in the rescue effort. “I’m not sure I understand why our leaders choose to declassify important aspects of this negotiation when the girls are still in captivity, but I can categorically say that the claim of a demand of 5 billion Euros as published by President Buhari’s biographer is not the truth. “While it is true that the captors of the Chibok girls have shifted the goal post several times when a swap deal was near, we must ask ourselves, what was responsible for the volatility that has denied the rest of the surviving Chibok girls and other captives’ freedom? “How did I know this and write with such audacity? I was the only negotiator that was flown to Maiduguri with some detainees in an Air Force plane and I stayed in the Maimalari military barracks for over three weeks with the detainees, trying to reach a deal. “From my professional experience with both parties namely government authorities and the insurgents, I can state that these abducted girls would long have returned home if political and security officials in government had shown better understanding of what is at play. “Never, even from the days of former President Goodluck Jonathan to today’s dispensation has government accepted a window of say two, three weeks and abided by it. So, we are dealing with insurgents who do not recognize your bureaucratic heritage and continue to shut out the windows each time the indicated timelines elapsed, and also dealing with political and security authorities that never considered it expedient to do their housekeeping ahead of acceptance of negotiation windows that are tied to timelines. “There is no point to delve into much detail at this point, but suffice it to state that both sides have their share of blame. My experience is that both the Buhari led government and the preceding Jonathan administration desired a negotiated end to this imbroglio but none ever showed any hunger in tracking the footprints and understanding the tendencies of the enemy. “I was not only involved in one or two attempts to free the Chibok girls with the current government, but on three separate occasions and even as recently as May/June, 2016, few months before I was declared wanted for allegedly refusing to cooperate with the same government and for having “links to terrorism” by the Nigerian Army”, he said. According to him, there is vested interest within government circle undermining the rescue efforts. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/how-i-met-chibok-girls-in-captivity-salkida/165839.html |
