Back then for my department, I was the guy. Everyone was envying me because of my billions and trillions of coins.
Sleep left my eyes.
Data was finishing every 2 days.
Power bank became my next of kin.

2024, anywhere you turned, somebody was tapping something or something was tapping that person.

The funniest part was the confidence we carried.
When Hamster Kombat was about to launch, I already planned to drop out of school. I imagined the headline: “Joe left school and became a Billionaire.” I even nearly gave one of my lecturers an uppercut that year. Thank God I didn’t try am oh.

Even serious married women were tapping while stirring soup.

I entered Computer Village one afternoon and it looked like a national tapping competition was happening. Everybody’s fingers were flying on screens like their lives depended on it.

Tapswap played all of us emotionally.
Hamster Kombat too no stew the way we expected. With all the billions of coins and useless points we gathered, na crumbs dem dash most people.

My neighbour collected half bag of rice and beans on credit because he was sure his millions of coins go land any moment.

Baba sat outside for 30 minutes staring at one spot like the Nigerian economy personally insulted him.

Honestly, Web3 is a game changer, but we didn’t come to learn. We came to collect.
We no wan learn blockchain, crypto, or any real digital skill.
We just wanted miracle money.
We wanted fruit without planting anything.
That was the problem.

Looking back, 2024 was truly “The Great Tapping Year.” Nigerians tapped with passion stronger than NYSC anthem.

Some people damaged their fingers.
Some cracked their phone screens.
Some finished their destiny data plan in one week.

My coursemate used to tap even in his sleep. I’m not joking.
One night I saw his hand still moving on the screen while he was snoring. By morning, his Samsung screen was gone.
Now he’s using Honor with fresh humility.

At some point I started thinking these tap apps were government-approved distractions for Nigerian youths.
Because how did the whole country suddenly become obsessed with tapping circles and cartoon animals?
Students stopped reading.
Workers were tapping during office hours.
People ignored real opportunities waiting for one app to turn them into billionaires overnight.

And let’s keep it real, under APC’s government, things have been tough. Inflation high, jobs scarce, naira dey do gymnastics. When a country is like that, people will chase anything that looks like a way out. Tap to earn blew up because people were desperate for hope, any hope. Distract us with tapping while the real issues keep tapping our pockets.

Nothing lasts forever sha.
Now when I look back, I laugh at myself. If I had used half that energy to learn Data Analysis, Cybersecurity, or even Mechanic sef, I’d probably be earning real money now.

But life na teacher.
She teaches you with embarrassment first, before wisdom enters.
