Great post. I've got a question:

If you indicated passport as a means of identification while registering for PayPal, can you use another means of identification like national ID or drivers license when they ask for proof of identification before limiting your account instead of the passport?

Business / Re: Has Anyone Tried Buying Bitcoin Using Paypal On Localbitcoins? by mmirage: 11:32pm On Feb 16, 2017
Birniwa:

Transaction using PayPal is associated with high risk of losing money, for example you can use it to buy Bitcoins on Localbitcoins and still request for "chargeback" from PayPal after receiving Bitcoins from the seller on Localbitcoins.

So because of this PayPal madness, alot of Bitcoins sellers there will not accept PayPal as method of payment. The few ones that will accept it there will require a lot of personal information from you which maybe inconvenient to you and/or detrimental to your online presence.

Thanks for the response.

What if one uses PayPal funds to buy gift cards on paypal-gifts.com and sells the gift cards on localbitcoins? Would that be more convenient to do?

Has anyone tried that?

Business / Naijacomplaints - Deception Is Corruption Too! by mmirage: 11:23am On Feb 10, 2016

It is awkward for consumers to be continually deceived into purchasing items that are not exactly what they look like in the market place. With a heavy heart, one cannot help but wonder the rationale behind such mischievous practice on part of producers of consumables. Take a look at the picture in this post. Looking at the externalities, as one is prone to doing when on a shopping outing, the expectation of an unsuspecting customer is that a full box of cornflakes is being purchased. The disappointment sets in upon opening the box in question with a revelation of an annoying quantity of cornflakes well below half the volume of the box. What a waste of space ! Or should I say ‘what a successful method of marketing’? Either ways, the absurdity is so clear that even the clueless of men are not robbed of the understanding of the evil intention and foolishness of the producers. In trying to entice buyers, they engage in an unhealthy waste of materials. That box can comfortably be used to package twice the quantity of cornflakes in that box. This is more like ending up hurting your own child and ‘Mike’, when your actual intention was to hurt ‘Mike’ alone.

The case mentioned here is just one out of several. It has become a commonplace practice; but does that make the act of deception right? No! This also amounts to corruption. Corruption, as Nigerians have come to know it, borders on stealing government money or financial offence committed by highly placed individuals in government. This is nothing but half-baked truth. Lower level of financial crime or stealing by trick offers an effective training ground for the unforeseen top shelf financial misappropriation. Who would have thought that James Ibori in his hay days as Governor ever engaged in stealing in the United Kingdom in his hustling days? His seed of corruption wasn’t sown when he was a governor, but when still hustling. Moral background check before any appointment proves itself a necessity here. Anti-corruption agents should learn if they are wise.

Beaming our searchlight on our telecos and internet service providers, one may not have to search so hard before noticing them at the high table reserved for the corrupt and exploiters. Imagine them advertising their services, through the phone number I bought from them, without their asking for my permission. The most annoying of it all is force subscribing you to a service without your knowledge, and continuously subject you to unholy deductions. NCC should be probed for not calling these companies to order. Have the people in the commission been served fat envelopes? It’s clean up time! Anti-corruption crusaders, it’s time to boogie.

I know that Voguepay offers this service. I've emailed them using the email above several times but they haven't answered. sad They weren't like that before. That's why I've been looking for an alternative method. I saw it mentioned somewhere that simplepay4u offered this service as well but when I signed up I couldn't locate the setting or any information regarding it so thought I'd ask over here to confirm.

Do you know some good and affordable alternative payment processors I could use for this purpose? Has anyone tried Gumroad before?

Politics / An Open Letter To Nigeria’s Clueless Leadership by mmirage: 7:43am On Dec 23, 2015
By NarrowGate (imasuen@narrowgateit.net)

It is fast becoming a matter of regret that we massively voted in the last general election to usher in ‘an expected period of relief’ in the never ending suffering of the masses in Nigeria. It is now evident more than ever that a great mistake has been made, judging from the current direction of affairs relating to the well-being of the Nigerian people. We have basked in the euphoria that a ‘Daniel is come’, only to be constantly shown the path that spells doomsday for the enterprising and hardworking Nigerians.

With new leadership comes the expectation of policy direction by investors, so as to map out new strategies to grow businesses that will benefit all, via the trickling down effects. We were unjustly robbed of this through the elected arrow head’s hiding of the mandate in his underpants, all in the name of searching for the right people for ministerial positions. When the list was made known, after a prolonged and unwarranted delay, the nation was thrown into confusion as those who made the list after such a ‘great’ search were not different from the street corner rogues we have grown accustomed to.

The Nigerian leadership has never had the interest of Nigerians at heart. In a country where there is so much hype about empowerment, the government has always shied away from the actual empowerment of the people through ease in the issuing of C of O to land owners in order to help them as collateral in their drive to access funds for investment purposes. Within the tenet of entrepreneurial capitalism, this is the first step toward empowerment. Instead, our leadership is busy getting itself buried in the corrupt opening of empowerment centres to validate its vanity ridden philosophy of showiness. The other opportunity for real empowerment that the government has constantly toyed with is the time it takes to get a business registered. CAC, entrusted with this task is in no way ready to free itself from ineptitude. Those employed there are clueless of the fact that, that agency plays a crucial role in the government’s revenue drive. If there’s no reasonable increase in the number of businesses, how will there be growth in government revenue via taxes? They are oblivious to the fact that they are an important player in the government revenue generation effort. What do they care? Thirty days make one salary anyway! What can be so frustrating is the ignorance of those who establish CAC as per its revenue generation capacity.

For crying out loud, what is the CBN governor up to? Devaluing the Naira when Nigeria wasn’t experiencing balance of payments problems? Economics 101 will tell any lunatic that this wasn’t the correct thing to do, when Nigeria is not pursuing an export-led industrialization strategy. Which export product is the CBN promoting its sale abroad by way of reduced prices via devaluation to have occasioned such irresponsible policy? What a pity! Not everyone who wears a school uniform is a good student. One will hardly expect something different from a Nigerian banker. It is a known fact that Nigerian banks are not banks in the sense of the word. They are ‘collection centres’. Who would bother to go to banks, if not for fear of armed robbers coming to cart away one’s hard earned money from our respective houses? One who rose through the rank in a Nigerian banking outfit lacked the monetary policy ideas that can rescue a bastardized economy like ours with all its complexities. These guys don’t see beyond their nose. They are perpetual bootlickers, licking the rulers of the day in spite of the autonomy enjoyed by the CBN; there are a few exceptions, though. One is lost as to why the CBN governor is now running after Naira credit / debit card holders for solutions to the nation’s foreign exchange squeeze. Does he or his team or employer know that the best way out of falling foreign exchange earnings is to increase export? Promote non-oil export and ensure earnings return to the country. An attempt to stop the use debit cards in making online purchases abroad will not provide the intended solution. The only thing you will ‘succeed’ in doing is to ruin e-commerce in Nigeria since web developers will not be able to register domains or pay for hosting plans. The future of the internet is also threatened as resellers will not be able to make payments. Mr. CBN governor, you and your masters are clueless when it comes to basic economic principles to rid the nation of poverty. You and your masters have set Nigeria on a path to economic doom. How can Nigeria improve its international competitiveness if you shut her out of the world of information technology! We are not living in some stone age! Little is there to wonder when our petroleum minister, hoping to get rid of petrol black marketers decided to forbid the purchase of petrol in containers/kegs. Little did he know or even thought of people in frozen food business who would lose income because of lack of electricity to power their freezers. If we don’t buy petrol in containers/kegs, how can we fuel our generators to power our homes? When you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can hardly be called a leader at all. Instead of creating employment, you have chosen to mount the horse dragging Nigeria to mass unemployment and darkness.

Mr. CBN governor, retrace your steps backward and go back to the drawing board in terms of the management of foreign exchange regimes. If you know the right thing to do, advise your employers accordingly. If they refuse, do the honourable thing and resign your appointment. How has your stoppage of the funding of our domiciliary accounts helped in increasing the value of the Naira? No benefit recorded so far. You only succeeded in sending the wrong signal to the economic system, thereby putting more pressure on the Naira, further weakening an already over-weakened currency. You had wanted to reduce the pressure on the Naira in the parallel market, but ended up with disastrous consequences. Speculation plays an important role in the determination of the value of a particular currency in the foreign exchange market. The undue reliance on oil earnings for foreign exchange is the source of your woes; then set the nation free from being a mono-product based economy using our vast natural resources through a genuine programme of diversification, not the one that draws applause in front of television cameras and end up there. This has never been possible in Nigeria because people who get elected here or impose themselves do not have what it takes to outline and execute meaningful development plans (medium term and long term). The sale of oil in its crude form is much easier for them to do. A clear testimony to this is reflected in the almost non-existent capacity to refine oil for local consumption. We have been plagued by this malaise since the first shipment of crude oil from Oloibiri in 1958. Suffocating local businesses to death, with all the attendant consequences of unemployment, civil strife and others will not bring about the embrace of the mantra –change- that shot the current leadership to power. Sitting on a keg of gun powder is not a game to be played at this time when the nation is seething in a pressure pot. Mr. CBN governor, we are in a democracy. Let your employers and Nigerians know what is the right thing to do, -like Sanusi-, instead of licking boots in order to keep your job at the expense of professionalism. Developing other sources of foreign exchange, through a meaningful and consistent policy devoid of politics will lead us to the promised land. The cluelessness of the leadership is the goliath standing in the way of development in our country - the unfortunate leadership that can’t differentiate between economic growth and economic development -.

Mr. CBN governor, how do you intend to court inflow of foreign exchange to Nigeria? For economic survival, it is inflow that we need, not the banning of outflow! That is a dumb approach. Inflow will help to foster the much needed development while the ban in outflow will cripple development efforts in the face of the absence of essential inputs, technology and others. Do you want to turn Nigeria into the federal republic of Caveland? Expect the incidence of a stiff resistance. To curb the undue outflow of foreign exchange in importing refined petroleum products, why haven’t you and your employers gone after oil multinational companies asking them to establish mega refineries in Nigeria? Securing such agreement is as easy as ABC! No will to do it? Ah, the ocean of corruption in that terrain will dry up! No wonder. People have been clamoring for the CBN to allow us receive money through our PAYPAL accounts, but to no avail. What is your explanation to this? We can send, but we can’t receive.

Leave our cards alone. Darkness is not our portion.

Business / The 'T & C Apply’ Syndrome by mmirage: 10:20pm On Oct 09, 2015
The passage of time certainly carries along a lot of things to change man or rather adapt him to the chaos associated with the struggle to master the human experience, assuming that he was spirit before being poured into the frame he presently resides.
Many things are being offered people these days on radio, television, newspapers, phones and even social media from different business quarters to boost the awareness of their presence. While a good campaign is laudable, but the abuse of it is worrisome. Such has been the case with many of our business outfits in their bid to attract more customers. There is nothing wrong in trying to build a strong customer base. What is uncomfortable, though, is the one-sidedness of the whole exercise. Businesses involve in this practice declare the existence of terms and conditions, and their application without expressly stating what they are so that would-be customers know what they are getting into. People find themselves at the mercy of these businesses when something goes wrong along the line. Promises made are not fulfilled, but defended by a single statement; ‘terms and conditions apply’. This unholy practice is killing consumers’ confidence, a key reason why our insurance industry is a flop. Some telecos will soon share the same fate.
Something has to be done to address this malaise or darkness will reign over the land. The incessant practice of this is nothing short of an organized drive to drag the society at large into a state of ignorance, all in the name of business promotion. Businesses do not prosper, in real terms, by exploiting the ignorance of the masses. The underlying platform for a good practice should be that of a ‘win win’ not ‘win lose’. Those being deceived into losing are the very ones you depend on, demand side, to grow into something trans-generational. No wonder we don’t, as yet, have anything in that category. Pathetic, isn’t it? How far can deception carry us?
One makes bold to call on the Consumer Protection Agency to do their work. A brighter searchlight should be beamed on businesses to examine their push adverts and making sure that prospective consumers know what they are expected to know from businesses before deciding on products. This will in no small measure contribute to the building of a more prosperous society treading the path of increased productivity.
LONG LIVE NIGERIA. ( -by NaijaComplaints)

Politics / The Praise by mmirage: 10:02pm On Oct 09, 2015
Let praise be given to those and for those things deserving praises, otherwise one who engages in giving unwarranted praises can be said to be making a fool of himself or herself. Or better still, he / she can be rightly said to be engaged in the act of bootlicking. This fellow may have a lot hidden in his closet that he is trying to prevent unearthing. Simple reasoning would direct us to focus our searchlight on such individual, especially if the said carries an air of a ‘pseudo king’.
The just ended United Nations General Assembly featured the participation of world leaders. It was a great forum for leaders to interact with one another in matters affecting their countries and regions. The opportunity to be represented as a country at such a gathering is refreshing to citizens as leaders who know their onions come back home with a baggage of goodies ranging from investment deals to agreements / cooperation on support to tackle some pressing problems of their respective countries. It also afforded leaders the rare privilege of making the world know the concerns and sufferings of their people due to unfair policies of other countries and international institutions.
It is deceptive to praise going to New York when actual participation, in the sense of the word, was absent. One is yet to pin down any of Nigeria’s pressing problems given due relevance at the General Assembly. Even the absence of our arrowhead at the meeting convened to discuss assistance to be given to countries affected by the Boko Haram insurgency, in respect of displaced persons was embarrassing enough, not to talk of the speech given by the president, which appeared to have been massively boycotted, judging from the number of people in attendance. The abortive meeting with Pope Francis because of lateness and wrong gate issue is another stench in the country’s bag. Charity begins at home. We are a country which runs on African time.
The bone of contention here is, ‘why the accolade?’ One is far from understanding OBJ’s body language or mouth language - the one that has to do with the tabling of the Nigerian matter - , when Joel McHenry, a Canada based observer in utter frustration said, ‘at some point, I thought he was talking to himself’. It was a matter of regret to hear that our affairs had been tabled at the world forum when actually we lacked genuine representation at a meeting to visit the menace that originated from a part of our country with spillage effect on other countries. Does this explain the recent increase in THE bombing campaign by Boko Haram? This undue shower of praise drives one into thinking of the need to establish a NAFDAC parallel in the country’s political sphere to help address the issue of expired politicians. Relevance is treasured, but not courted in a do or die manner. From the ill-fated third term agenda to the conversion of personal estate into the Central Bank to keep GOVERNMENT money wrongly taken from government coffer and withholding it from the government of the time because of lack of trust in the government you also helped to bring to power; only to surrender the said money in a move to lobby for relevance later to a government feared would probe you. WAKE UP NIGERIA and see what is happening. CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY. (- by NaijaComplaints)
