The Nigerian Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of 'Operation Safe Domain II' involving Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Niger Republic.

Ogalla expressed his satisfaction during the closing ceremony of Operation Safe Domain II which started on Sept.11 and ended on Sept.15 at Cotonou, Port Naval Base, Republic of Benin.

The CNS was represented by the Deputy Director of the Nigerian Navy, Commodore Shuaib Ahmed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Niger are members of the Maritime Zone E countries established by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Integrated Maritime Strategy (EIMS) in 2013.

The purpose of the Joint Maritime Operations and Patrols (JMOP) is primarily to ensure the permanent, joint and coordinated control of the Maritime Zone E’ with a view to ensuring maritime safety and security.

Ogalla said that even though the operation had been declared closed, ships from the members of Zone E countries were still patrolling the sea day and night to discourage piracy and maritime crimes.

"The aim of the operation is to consolidate on 'Operation Safe Domain I', conducted some three years back.

"The aim is to bring the lessons learnt in the first operation to bear on the second operation most especially in the challenges experienced in times of operating together.

"Improving on challenges such as the interoperability of equipment, language barrier experienced during the first operation and bringing countries of different territory to bear on this operation," he said.

The CNS said that the operation bolstered the existing relationship between the navies of the participating countries, as well as consolidated the diplomatic ties and economic achievements of the countries.

"In addition, the operation will make the environment safe, secure and hitch free for economic activities to thrive within the maritime zones of Zone E.

"This will boost economic activities, improve economy and provide employment among other benefits to member countries in the zone.

"I believe that there is an improvement in the interoperability of equipment and that the exercise has also bridge the gap between language barriers," he said.

Ogalla said that the success of Operation Safe Domain I and II would open doors for other operations in order to continuously ensure a safe and secured maritime environment.

The Minister Delegate to the Benin president for National Defence, Mr Fortunet Nouatin said that the operation had improved the security and safety in the maritime space of Zone E.

Nouatin said that the operation took into account a patrol zone which extended towards the outer limit of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ).

"The EEZ has become the favoured place for pirates, following the awakening of our countries.

"The keenness for improving performance which resulted in the integration of the air dimension in operation 'SAFE DOMAIN II' cannot leave us indifferent.

"This is why I will like to express all my gratitude to the brother and friendly country, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for all the efforts made, which has led to these results today," he said.

The minister appreciated and thanked the commitment and role of the Nigerian Navy helicopter in the operation.

"I encourage you to keep up the momentum, in order to ensure a safe and secure space for all users of Zone E maritime space and the Gulf of Guinea," Nouatin said.

The Director, Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC), Zone E, Commodore Aniedi Ibok said the zones' maritime sector covers a total of about 106,000 sq nm from the coast of Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

Ibok said that ships from each country would continue to be at sea and continue to communicate and interoperate when there are issues of hot pursuit or any crime that is cross border.

"The criminals will not have a free way on our waters because our waters are governed and that is the statement that we have come to make.

"The Nigerian Navy, Beninese Navy and Togolese Navy are all awake to their duties and will be there all round clock to make sure that pirates do not have freedom of action anymore," he said.

The director said that those doing business in the waters legally would have the opportunity to carry out their businesses without harassment and he guaranteed safety of life at sea.

The Beninese CNS, Captain Jean Le'on Olatoundji observed that the operation did not report any anomaly in terms of security.

"In view of this, we can therefore congratulate the synergy of actions, characteristic of the fight for the security and safety of the maritime space of the Gulf of Guinea.

"I express my profound gratitude to all the eminent political and administrative authorities of our respective countries for making available the resources needed to carry out this operation.

"I also extend my heartfelt congratulations to the staff of MMCC and to all the personnel of the navies of Zone E member countries involved in the organisation, planning and direction of the operation," he said.

Olatoundji also thanked the commanders and crews of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) ABA, Patrol Vessel OTI and Patrol Vessel PENDJARI who spearheaded the operation.

The Commanding Officer of NNS ABA and the officer in charge for Operation Safe Domain II, Cdr. Samuel Fiyai said that operating together had made them observe the strengths and weaknesses of their interoperability.

Fiyai said that the observation would enable them address the issues of their weakness as well as capitalise on their strengths.

"Most importantly the criminals and those with criminal tendency has seen the aggressive patrols by member states of maritime Zone E, operating together without gaps.

"This sends a message that there is no hiding place unlike before where you can operate in Nigeria and crossover to Benin for safety because of diplomatic immunity.

"Now, we are working together and we will give pirates and maritime criminals hell on all fronts," the Commander said.

CLEEN Foundation, a non-governmental organisation trained some security stakeholders on prevention of Serious and Organised Crime (SOC) in Ikeja, Lagos Statetate.

The two-day training which started on Monday had the theme: “Serious and Organized Crime (SOC) on Prevent for the Crime Prevention Steering Group (CPSG).

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Mr Gad Peter, in his opening address, said that the idea to train stakeholders on crime prevention was because Lagos state was among states more prone to security challenges.

Peter said that the Prevent Project was for everyone irrespective of status.

“This project is not only for people in small community even the rich people we thought are protected suffer from molestation and do what they do not want to do.

“We need to pay attention to what is happening around us.

“Nigerians want to know how our security agents are responding to this issue of crime and criminality that push people into depression,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders in Nigeria to work together to secure the country’s future.

“We must ensure that everyone plays their part in promoting peace, security, and stability in the nation,” he said.

The Executive Director urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kennedy Osezuah, said that SOC was a criminality that required a level of planning, preparation and coordination.

He said that the impact goes beyond the crime itself, negativity impacting socio-economic, political dynamic and structure.

“SOC includes but not limited to trafficking and dealing in drugs and people, weapons and counterfeit good, sophisticated theft and robbery.

“Fraud and other forms of financial crime, cybercrime, kidnapping, child sexual exploitation,” he said.

According to him, SOC is not new in the society, just that it is taking a new dimensions.

Osezuah, who is the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) Ifako Division, said that SOC required a response across the whole of government, and close collaboration with the public, the private sector and with many other.

He highlighted the role of Organised Criminal Groups (OCG) within the community in the state.

“OCG is a well structured or coordinated crime planned by two or more people for a purpose, it could be local or international,” he said.

According to him, the audience that Prevent intervention intend to target are those in anti-social behavior and low level crime but not yet as a member of an OCG.

“We cannot allow this menace to continue in our society, we have to be conscious to curtail the ugly trend,” he said.

Mr Trevor Service, Training advisor, SOC Prevent, United Kingdom, said that prevention was one of the approaches used to deal with SOC.

“Prevent is the concept of providing meaning alternative pathways to those most likely to join OCGs to prevent the growth and proliferation of membership leading to a decline in criminal activity,” he said

According to him, Prevent is close to community policing.

“It is critical for the police to involve the community at a very local level and prevent is part of a community-oriented policing approach,” he said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP),
Grace Longe, of the National Institute Police Studies (NIPS) called for concerted effort of all to prevent crime.

“We all need to contribute our quota in our little way to ensure that SOC Prevent program succeed.

“We are working to ensure that the initiative work so that the youth who are our future leaders can drive upon it.

“When the society is doing well, everybody is at peace,” she said.

NAN reports that the training was in collaboration with Brighter Future, TorchlightGroup and Tag international.

The training had in attendance representatives of Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) NDLEA, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Nairaland / General / Don Harps On Need To Curb Abuse Of Communication In Media Platforms by mobad007: 9:32am On Sep 19, 2023
Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, Vice Chancellor ,Ahman Pategi University(Private -owned) Kwara State has urged for the need to address the abuse of communication in both traditional and new media platforms to safeguard peace and national security in Nigeria.

Adedimeji said this at the 38th Annual Conference of the English Scholars' Association Of Nigeria (ESAN) which was held at Burba Maruwa Auditorium Lagos State University(LASU) ,Ojo on Friday.

Theme of the annual conference :”Language and Communication Studies for Peace, (In) Security and Development in Nigeria”.

He said that more attention should be given to the media, both traditional and new, with a view to curbing the abuse of communication.

“For any country to develop, three conditions of a conducive legal and political environment, good economic policies and equitable social system must be established.

“As desirable as development it cannot take place in a cultural vacuum as culture constitutes the life wire of any people with which all human activities are harmonised, hence galvanised for to development.

“There is no alternative to development without the cultural component.

“The development of Nigeria has been constrained by  a history of corrupt and autocratic leadership, indiscipline, lack of patriotism, deplorable work ethics and moral decadence.

“To reverse the situation, language, literature and communication are crucial,” Adedimeji said.

He added that language was the hub around which all human activities social, political, economic, educational revolve.

“Without language, there is evidently no society, no polity, no nation, no democracy and ultimately no development.

“As no man can survive fully without language, as such, no nation can fully progress and develop without a common linguistic basis,”Adedimeji said.

Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello,Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, emphasised the profound impact of language and communication on our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

Olatunji-Bello said that this factors had contributed significantly to global conflicts and insecurity.

“I urge individuals to push the boundaries of knowledge in order to better understand language and communication,”she said.

Prof. Pius Akhimen, Head,Department of English,LASU said that this year's theme, brings linguistic, literary, and communication studies to the forefront of societal needs.

Akhimen proposed that the association should broaden its scope beyond conferences and engage in other areas such as agenda setting and involvement in the national language question.

“By participating in these activities, this association will further enhance its relevance and impact.

“The association can contribute to the interpretation of the Nigerian constitution, highlighting the importance of their expertise in such matters.

These expanded activities will allow the association to play a more significant role in shaping language policies and promoting effective communication within the country,”he said.

Prof. Tajudeen Surakat ,National President of ESAN said that the choice of the theme was apt and timely, especially, at a period when violence, injustice and turbulence have enveloped virtually all parts of the world on all fronts.

Surakarta said that language, literature and communication had roles to play in our quest for durable peace, security and development.

“But these disciplines alone do not have the magic wand to solve our problems.

“Other behavioural or social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science, economics) and the humanistic studies must also contribute their own quotas.

“In addition, collective responsibility is required from individuals, families, the large society, governments at the various levels ,educational institutions and the governed must be involved,”he said.

Nairaland / General / Anetekhi Explains Benefits Of Sargassum (sea Weed) by mobad007: 5:53pm On Sep 16, 2023
Dist. Prof. Martins Agenuma Anetekhai, Centre Leader, Centre of Excellence for Sargassum Research, Lagos State University (LASU) has explained the various uses of Sargassum, a sea weed, and hinted of possibility of commercializing products made from it.
Prof. Anetekhai spoke to the media at the 5th Lagos State University (LASU) Research and Innovation Fair which took place at the Makanjuola Lecture Hall, at Ojo, Lagos State, on September 12, 2023.

Speaking on what his Centre is doing to promote the use of Sargassum, he stated that the centre is working on the potential for commercialization. “We are working on the potential for commercialization; we have picked out three items already for patent, we are working on it, we have already filled the form out but there are few things we need to do here and there.

The beautiful thing is that the outcome of the research we have taken to the field, we have farmers that are already using them, many of the farmers are here, those in Priggery, Grass-cutter, Poultry; there are farmers who are not researchers but they are all here with us. We also have the advocacy group, they are all here.”

While Anetekhai disclosed that Sargassum is a sea weed found on the coastal region of Badagry, explained what Sargassium means “Sargassum is a sea weed, it is actually alien to our country, it came in from the Sargasso sea and before now, we have not really been making use of our sea weed in our country. We have not developed in making use of sea weed, and suddenly we found sea weed in our coastal waters coming from the Sargasso seas.

He also said that many people especially fishermen saw Sargassum as a menace which could disrupt fishing as well as pleasure until LASU intervened and began to see Sargassum as a resource. “Our local communities, our fishermen, they didn’t really know what it was because it was clogging their nets, when they don’t have fishes it is sargassum they would be catching. And for recreation purpose, people don’t go to the beach when the thing is around.

So LASU just decided that, well let’s look at what this thing is, let’s not see it as a nuisance, let’s see it as a resource, and we have been working on it and we have been able to treat it as a resource, converting waste to wealth, so far we have been able to develop some feed from it. We developed fish feed, we developed rabbit feed, pig feed, grass-cutter feed and so on.

“So we have been able to isolate vitamin C, Vitamin D, and in the building industry we have been able to use it to make blocks, and we have made ceilings out of it.”
Anetekhai also hinted of plans export the product.

“Sargassum, we are also looking at the possibility of coming out with a product that can be exported to the arid lands like Saudi Arabia and so on. They do take in Cocoa peat to their places, and Sargassum can perform the function of cocoa peat.

“If I may add, we are the current best research institution, Tertiary Category, an award we won at the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Abuja Expo 2023, held in January this year.
Speaking on the competition, he said “The project is before the president for signing, to use his Executive Order to sign it into a National Centre for Excellence for Sargassum Research; we are also hoping that by extension, it will become the regional centre and we are pushing for that.”

Bamidele Akinlade a Poultry Farmer and one of the outstation partners of the Sargassum Research team. She spoke on the impact of the research to the public.

“Sargassum that has been termed as menace or waste for the coastal region of Badagry, through this research turned out to be a blessing in disguise, in that I used the dry Sargassum sea weed to compound my chicken feed and it turned out well. From the research I discovered that Sargassum could be substituted for the carbohydrate portion of the feed, majorly we use corn but we all know that corn now is very expensive and not too much available. So in the course of the research sargassum combined with other chicken feed turn out very well as a good feed.”

Akindele explained the parameters used in the research “There are parameters we used with the control of the birds, and in particular we used broiler, broiler chicken is a very good source of poultry protein, very good. In comparing with the feed that has corn majorly as a carbohydrate, you see that sargassum feed gave the bird muscle mass weight that compare favourable with the conventional chicken feed. In height the same, in behavioral aspect of the bird, you could see that sargassum fed chicken competed favourably with the conventional one.

“And then also, after we finished research in feeding, when we cook these chicken it is tastier, no fat, and that is healthy for human consumption. I don’t usually us’ spices apart from ginger, garlic and minimal salt, the taste was so surprising. With our conventional feed, when you cook the chicken, you have to pack fat; in fact you can even use the fat to cook it.”
Jijoho Ogun, a Pharmacist turned farmer, who is into animal husbandry with special interest in feeding on the impact of Sargassum on his business saying “Before I got to know about LASU, it has always been seen as an ordinary weed, a nuisance at the beach, but when  I got in touch with them,  I found out that they have tasted it on pigs, and once they feel the smell they start groaning for it, the only thing there is the quantity of salt in it, it  is something we advise to reduce, so you need first and foremost to wash it, dry it or otherwise, before you can use it.

"For the very small ones, we actually need to reduce a particle side for them, because once they are weaned by their mothers they need something that is not as hard, so we need to get some machine, peletize it, if they cannot peletize it, reduce and make it smaller in size and mix it with normal feed that we have.

“What I have observed is that they are well absorbed by the animals, and for me as an Entrepreneur, if I use like one ton of PKC, it is about N120,000, one ton of waste grain is about N150,000, these are two basic feeds people use, but if I now finds something that is not as expensive as any of them, and I can substitute with Sargassum, even if it is 25% of what I am using, you know, the cost of production will now reduce, while the animal price will not reduce.”

Elizabeth Adepoju, a 200 Level student of Department of Educational Foundation in Counselling Psychology, LASU, who said she is studying Early Childhood Education, is also the First General Secretary, LASU SDG Club, she spoke on her role in creating awareness on Sargassum “I have the opportunity to partner with a company that came to LASU to meet with the Centre of Excellence for Sargassum Research, so now the aspect I am working on is the advocacy.

“We want our students to learn about Sargassum, gain knowledge about it, know what it can be used for, then they can go out there to help their immediate community, because in the first instance sargassum cause issues for life below water on our seas, so these students can come together to run project that would clean the beaches and at the same time take those Sagarssum and make out products with it. We can have our students that are in the Pharmacy and others take these things and use it as their final year project, and get more things that can be derived from it, more products that can be derived from the Sargassum, so this is what we do as advocacy group,” she stated

Nairaland / General / Cyberfraud: Group Inaugurates Intensive Media Sensitisation by mobad007: 6:55pm On Aug 18, 2023
A Committee of Chief Information Security Officers of Nigerian Financial Industry (CICISONFI) on Thursday kicked-off an intensive media campaign to sensitise Nigerians on ways to prevent cyberfraud.

CICISONFI in partnership with media and social media influencers such as The Hook and Cybersafe Foundation presented the campaign tagged “NoGoFallMagaConFamAmAgainCampaign”.

The campaign was presented at a media parley at the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotels, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island, Lagos.

It was reported that the media parley was organised by CICISONFI in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bankers Committee.

It had in attendance various stakeholders from across the banking, technology and media industries among others in attendance.

The Chairman of CICISONFI, Mr Festus Amede, in his address, decried the great negative impact cyber fraud had on the lives and livelihood of the casualties.

Amede said that the economy of individuals, corporate organisations, governments and other victims of cyberfraud had been greatly affected by the menace.

He added that this had necessitated the awareness campaign to discourage the trend.

“We are embarking on this journey because of the embarrassing situations many victims of cyberfraud have been made to pass through.

“Fortunately, these crimes can be prevented by being well-informed and aware.

“No one is immune to this situation, but with awareness, cases of cybercrime can be reduced to the barest minimum level.

“We are embarking on a journey to creating awareness across Nigeria.

“The campaign will be done using Radio and Television jingles, social media campaigns and advertisements in the three major Nigerian languages – Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo as well as in Pidgin English.

“We have been on this journey for some months now, working to ensure that this campaign is fruitful and we achieve good results,” he said.

Amede told NAN, on the sidelines of the event, that customers should be wary of conversation with unknown individuals who might be asking for sensitive and private information about their bank details.

“People should be wary of conversation with unknown callers, once such caller is asking for bank details, there is a need to cross-check and on no account should customers give out their bank PIN.

“When conversation with unknown caller is getting to personal details, such calls should be discontinued or paused to double-check before it crosses the line.

“The impact of cyber security is huge, and we have seen so many attacks that are actually preventable through proper awareness and this is what necessitated this campaign.

“Many people have been defrauded of their pensions because they gave out their bank’s OTP, which should not be released to any third party under any condition.

“Even banks don’t have the authority to request for their customers’ OTP,” he said.

Contributing, the Group Chief Information Security Officer (GCISO), First Bank, Mr Harrison Nnaji, said that the PIN was an exclusive property of the bank customers.

He noted that even banks do not have access to their customers’ respective PIN.

“I want to correct a misguided notion, banks don’t have access to some information of their customers especially, the PIN generated by the customer.

“What banks have as details is just an encrypted message about the card and not the PIN. Customers’ PIN numbers are not domiciled in the bank or with any of its officials.

“At no point should customers release their PIN to a third party, not even any bank officials during conversation because they have no need for it. The same goes for the OTP as well.

“Also, the 16-digit numbers on the ATM cards should be kept confidential because it can be compromised if known.

“And if anyone feels that his account has been compromised through the ATM Card, such card should be replaced immediately,” Nnaji said.

A member of the Board of CICISONFI, Mrs Favour Femi-Oyewole, urged customers to be sure of those they related with under the guise of Customer Relations Officer.

“Our people should be wary of those that they are making their complaints to under the guise of Customer Relations and know the type of information they are divulging.

“People should also be careful about the site at which they want to initiate transactions, and be sure that they are dealing with the right source.

“Nowadays, scammers create lookalike sites, which unsuspecting victims may want to deal with. I have once had someone who fell for such before.

“Everybody should be careful because no one is immune to these cyberfraud that has made people to lose their hard-earned money,” Femi-Oyewole said.

Also, Dr Peter Obadare, Chairman, Advisory Board, Cybersafe Foundation, urged people not to be in a hurry to seal deals online.

“All these fraud can be minimised if people can be patient enough when trying to strike a deal online with whoever.

“There are many fraudsters, who are waiting to scam people, but there is something that they don’t have and that is sufficient patience for the would-be victim to cross-check them,” Obadare said.

Mr Sam Ochonma, the Managing Director, the Hook, described the “NoGoFallMagaConFamAmAgainCampaign” as a journey that would be taken to the nooks and crannies of the country.

Ochonma said it was intended to sensitise more Nigerians on the antics of cyberfraudsters, and how they can be avoided.

In his closing address, Mr Bayo Adeyinka of One Bankers, commended the group’s efforts to make the campaign fruitful.

He said that the campaign would save the economy from bleeding, and help to enlighten the populace on ways to avoid cyberfraud.

The Succour for Nations Development Initiatives (SFN), a non-governmental organisation, has advised Nigerians against illegal migration, in commemoration of the 2023 International World Youth Day.

SFN is an organisation borne out of the need to provide the support required for the development of African nations.

It is founded on the understanding that nation-building is a task for all, not just the government.

SFN focuses on building the mindset and capacity of youths within the age of 18-35, thereby awakening them to the responsibility of personal development and nation-building through value reorientation.

The group, in its annual Thrive Conference 4.0, with the theme: “Rising Above the Tides”, on Saturday in Lagos, encouraged young people on resilience and building their quotient in a hostile environment.

The founder of the group, Mrs Solape Adesuyi, urged Nigerian youths to be resilient and use challenges they face as opportunities to create better versions of themselves.

“The aim of the Thrive 4.0 conference is to encourage young people. As we can observe the environment is tough, and with the current state of the economy a lot of people are frustrated.

“What we have come to do is to give young people hope and that they can thrive no matter the situation they find themselves.

“These young people can take advantage of opportunities all around them and make better version of themselves.

“We cannot entirely ask Nigerian youths to stop the continuous relocation outside country.

“However, we counsel them that there are a lot of opportunities both locally and internationally.

“We encourage young people to relocate legally, build the capacity and bring the resources and knowledge to impact your nation and people,” Adesuyi said.

According her, young people should not go with the mindset of escaping the Nigerian system but must go with the mindset that they are building capacity to return and build their nation.

“With our various sessions, we are also bringing opportunities for learning, skills acquisition, building capacity.

“If the Nigerian youth can rise up with the application of the principles of adversity quotient they have, we will see them gather momentum and do exploits.

On his part, Mr Tolulope Ahmed, a youth advocate and the Chief Executive Officer of Value Publishing, called for the participation of more youths in conferences like this to build the capacity for the next generation.

“We are here to sensitise the young people and help them build capacity for whatever they aim to do or achieve in life.

“The Thrive 4.0 conference is an event no youth can afford to miss. The conference actually needs more publicity to help engage more youths as we help them to unleash their capacity.

“If we can equip the young people, they can thrive in any environment they find themselves,” Ahmed said.

Also, Mrs Blessing Alagbe, a guidance coach and educationist, tasked the youth on a change of mindset for a successful future.

“The programme is tailored to young people to go over and above the storm and troubles of life.

“Our youths need a total mind orientation, whatever change we hope to see in young people will have to start from their minds.

“There is the need for our youths to begin to believe more in themselves, we may have failed systems but Nigeria is not a lost cause.

“I want to believe that young people will be leaving from this conference with that understanding that they need to go back and have a rethink.

“They need to start thinking; where am I now?; what can I start doing differently that will cause changes in me first before we start going into the society; because you cannot give what you don’t have,” Alagbe added.

Another facilitator and fitness coach, Mr Martin Odey of Eco- fitness, called for physical capacity building as well as intelligence and financial empowerment for the youth.

“We are part of this conference to build the youth. They do not just not need to build financial or intelligence capacity but also their physical capacity and thrive wherever they find themselves.

“So, it is important for the youth be able to build confidence and build themselves in all aspects in order to overcome the current challenges,” Odey said.

A participant at the conference, Mr Abayomi Fatoki, a sales manager, said he had learnt how to succeed even in adverse conditions.

“The reason I am here for the conference is to learn and be a more successful youth.

“One lesson I have learnt from the conference is that I need to be efficient in everything I do. Hardship is part of life and makes me extraordinary.

“You cannot remain in your comfort zone and excel, we need to thrive and aim at continuous development,” Fatoki said.

Mr Temitope Abayomi, another participant, said he hoped to build capacity for adversity quotient.

“What I have gained in this conference is build up my adversity quotient capacity. I do not have any intention to relocate, I survive in Nigeria.

“I have come to understand that to be great in life, I must be able to handle wisely the adverse situation I face and thrive above it,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Microbiologist Calls On Govts. To Provide Adequate Health Safety In Abattoirs by mobad007: 11:17am On Aug 16, 2023
Professor of Microbiology, Bolanle Opere has called on federal and state governments to put in place measures to safely dispose anti microbial waste from human and animal health systems, especially abattoirs, and manufacturing facilities.

Opere, lecturer at the Department of Microbiology,Faculty of Science made this assertion at the 90th inaugural lecture of Lagos State University (LASU),Ojo on Tuesday, in Lagos.

The theme of the inaugural lecture is :”Microbes in the Environment: Unseen Femmes Fatales and Virtuous Saviours”.

She said that wastes were generated everyday, and it would continue to be so, as long as humans and animals exist.

“The quest of man for animal protein, especially from cow, has led to increased number of abattoirs and the resultant volume of wastewater from processing of the cow meat.

“Wastes that are not properly managed and disposed end up polluting the environment.

“Although efforts have been geared towards curbing the menace of pollution around the world, particularly by the United Nations, nevertheless, in many parts of the world, human activities such as animal production still impact negatively on the environment, ”Opere said.

She said that consideration was hardly given to safety practices during animal transport to the abattoirs, during slaughter and dressing.

“For example, during dressing, the oesophagus of cattle and sheep should be sealed to prevent leakage of animal contents.

“These ineptitudes often lead to contaminations from hides, hooves and content of alimentary tract during evisceration and negatively impact on the environment, soil, surface and ground water,” Opere said.

The professor said that during a study, soil samples were collected from Agege abattoir contaminated area and the neighborhood without wastewater contamination.

“Agege abattoir was chosen for soil sample collection because slaughtering activities were relatively higher and the abattoir was well demarcated with a fence.

“High level of contamination of the abattoir wastewater, as revealed in this study, further confirmed the dangers associated with discharging untreated wastewater to the environment, thus, the need for adequate treatment to ensure decontamination,” Opere said.

Nairaland / General / Pageantry: Enthusiasts Call For United Front, Well Regulated Industry by mobad007: 7:57am On Aug 16, 2023
Pageant enthusiasts, on Sunday, urged stakeholders to unite and regulate the industry well respected pageant organisation.

They made the call at the Pageant Conference themed “The Future of the Pageant Industry: Grooming the Next Generation of Beauty Queens.”

The convener, Mrs Winfrey Agbelese in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the idea behind The Pageant Conference is to bring the Nigerian pageant industry under one roof.

The former beauty queen said coming under one roof will eliminate stakeholders fighting themselves.

“But instead to encourage fighting together to achieve the collective aim of growing the industry.

“Pageantry literally has a whole lot of potentials but because of unnecessary competition, the bad blood in the space.

“Negativism to be precise, is slowly killing the industry, it definitely made it not to go far as we need it to.

“This conference is literally to have the conversations of the pageant industry, talk about the issues, the challenges, the plagues of the industry and the possible solutions moving forward,” she said.

He noted that we have had a lot of scandals in the industry but the truth is that everything great has a good side and the bad side.

“Now what we are doing is to amplify the great side about the pageant industry.

“There has been misconceptions. People are talking about how girls literally sell their bodies or do certain things.

“But then again, a woman being proud of how she looks, how she speaks, how she thinks, trying to amplify and make life a better place and also help other people literally is not a bad thing.

“The industry teaches you to poise yourself properly, mentally, it literally prepares you for the world, allows you to speak well to stand up to talk.

“To be able to stand in any room or in any country and deliver a compelling statement,” she said.

Agbelese, a broadcast journalist and founder of The Pageant Academy, added that, beauty queens also go into community services after dropping their crown and that they are pretty doesn’t mean they are not intelligent.

“Pageant girls after dropping their crown on stage are literally in the slums doing community services, pushing the industry pushing their communities.

“I have been involved in several and past projects. We have visited hospitals, orphanage homes and all. These are the things that people need to see and these are things we need to amplify.

“Yes, we look good but that doesn’t mean we don’t have things in our head, doesn’t mean we don’t have projects. We also have things that are close to our heart. So yes, that is the good part and it definitely outweighs the misconceptions,” she said.

Media personality, Morayo Afolabi-Brown who was a speaker at the event said that pageantry is not a platform to showcase beauty alone but a platform to impact lives.

“This is a platform to impact lives, develop tourism in the country, share knowledge, experience and help each other grow. Use this platform to find the problem within the industry and create a solution.

“Yes, people judge ladies in pageantry but this is an opportunity for you to redirect and redefine the narrative. Don’t give up on pageantry, there are so many opportunities in this industry,” she said.

Mrs Omolayo Oyawoye, a child behaviour therapist further advised other enthusiasts and aspirants to be their biggest cheer leader and never let anything pull them away from their passion.

“Let go, do not be defined by what has happened to you or your childhood. There is more to you than you already know and there is more to you beyond your beauty,” she said.

NAN reports that the convener, during the conference, unveiled The pageants Academy Online Masterclass, a general overview of the pageant industry open to people who want to go into the industry as pageants, coaches or investors

Nairaland / General / IYD: Take Advantage Of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda – APC UK Deputy Chairman by mobad007: 10:07am On Aug 14, 2023
Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, Convener of The Asiwaju Group (TAG) and Deputy Chairman, APC UK has urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, on the occasion of the 2023 International Youth Day (IYD).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2023 UN International Youth Day celebrated worldwide on Saturday is tagged: “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”.

Congratulating the Nigerian youths in a message on Sunday to commemorate the IYD, Abdullahi said the idea behind the 2023 edition’s theme was not far-fetched, ” in a world that is faced with emissions and climate change.”

Lauding Nigerian youths for their courage, tenacity and resilience, Abdullahi said globally, the day was set aside by the United Nations to recognise youths’ impact and importance as propellers to drive positive change all over the world.

“Your impact in instituting the necessary tools and institutions to combat the threats that face us all is fundamentally germane.

“Hence, the need for tapping into your skills to engender a sustainable and habitable humanity.

“We must, therefore, celebrate you, your courage, your skills, your tenacity of purpose and your radical temperament to enforce changes when the need be.

“I must commend your resilience, doggedness and result-driven passion in whatever you choose to embark upon,” Abdullahi, an Oil and Gas expert said.

He said that without the youths’ contribution to the global economy, the world would have been a hell on earth to live.

Abdullahi said: “This is why it is very important that the danger our world faces today has you as the ‘Saviour’ to stem the tide of extinction that stirs us in the face.

“As a fulcrum for development that you all are, the world awaits your interest and readiness to unleash that God-given talents of yours to make positive changes and make our world a better place.”

He advised Nigerian youths to imbibe, the ” can do spirit”.

“Our world today needs you more than ever. We want to tap into your skills in this technologically-driven age. We want your expertise in this age of Acquired Intelligence.

“And we believe you have a lot to offer as the world grapples with the new order,” he added.

He said the decision of Tinubu’s leadership to give more space for the youths was not by happenstance.

According to him, it is a deliberate decision because he believes so much in youths driving the necessary positive changes the nation needs to revamp.

“You must, therefore, prove yourselves as worthy partners in driving a new Nigeria hinged upon greater future and shared prosperity. You must eschew violence, jettison crimes and embrace high moral rectitude.

“You must channel your skills toward adventures that will better foster the image of Nigeria across the globe. You must represent your fatherland well and protect her image with all your strength.

“With your readiness, let Nigeria’s image soar high in the comity of Nations. With you as the beacon of hope, a new Nigeria is possible,” he said.

Nairaland / General / History Inspires My Choice Of Biopic On Awujale – Nigerian Movie Producer by mobad007: 5:04pm On Aug 13, 2023
A Nigerian movie producer, Seun Oloketuyi on Friday said the history inspired him to choose biopic on Nigeria’s longest-reigning first-class monarch, Awujale Sikiru Adetona.

Oloketuyi, who just released a biographical film titled “Awujale’’, said this while speaking with newsmen in Lagos.

According to him, history is imperative in preserving culture. It is always tough working on a person’s biography but it’s important to always stick to facts.

“One of the reasons why I work on biopics is the fact that history is being forgotten.

“If you have little children, most of them know the history of queen of England, Martin Luther King, but they don’t know the history of Oba of Lagos or the history of Awujale.

“There are lots of inspiring women in Nigeria whose stories can be told. Our choices are usually based on inspiration and that’s the first thing that drives us,’’ movie producer said.
According to him, it is imperative for parents to make their children learn history of their states and the country at large.
“So, we feel that this is a story that needs to be told. Apart from that, the fact that a lot of people don’t like to read, entertainment will help many find their way to historical things.
“It will also inspire us. A lot of young Obas will now know that they are supposed to be custodians of culture and tradition,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the movie producer had done some biopics on President Bola Tinubu as a governor, Gov. Yahaya Bello and Lamidi Adedibu, `Alagbara Ibadan’

Nairaland / General / Fawehinmi Lecture: Lawyer Urges FG To Provide Critical Infrastructure With Subsi by mobad007: 4:09pm On Aug 13, 2023
A legal luminary, Mr Wahab Shittu, has advised the Federal Government to use savings from fuel subsidy to build critical infrastructure that would benefit all Nigerians.

Shittu gave the advice at the 2nd Mohammed Fawehinmi Annual Lecture and 1st Scholarship Award held in Ikeja on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture had the theme: “Removal of fuel subsidy and its impact on Nigerian masses”.

Shittu, who is also a prosecutor for the anti-graft agencies, noted that about USD1.23 billion was reported to have been saved in just two months of scrapping the subsidy on petrol.

He said the fuel subsidy removal should be matched with corresponding improvement on the social welfare protection programmes if the current reforms would make any meaningful impact in the economy.

The lawyer recalled that nearly all the presidential candidates in the buildup to the 2023 general elections campaigned on the removal of subsidy as a necessary imperative if the country was to get out of the present economic crisis.

He further added that they also agreed that fuel subsidy had dangerously encouraged corruption in the way and manner the policy was implemented thereby enriching the very few at the expense of majority of Nigerians.

He, however, said the challenge was not in the removal of the subsidy but in practical implementation of allied programmes that would impact positively on the general welfare of the people.

Shittu said that persons who disagreed with subsidy removal claimed that the timing was not right and that sufficient measures were not put in place to reduce its adverse effect on the populace.

He, therefore, advised the federal government to provide palliatives to cushion the effect of subsidy removal in a well thought-out manner designed to benefit the masses.

He also urged government at all levels to cut their expenditures to ensure success of the new policy regime.

Earlier in his speech, the General Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Adesina Adegbite, had described the late Mohammed Fawehinmi as a consummate bar man who was radical on issues affecting the masses.

According to him, Mohammed was a radical soul who took after his father, the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

“He was not just a bar man but also a man of the poor masses who used the instrumentality of the law to fight for the masses.”

Mrs Basirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku also said the event was the greatest legacy that she could bequeath to her late brother who she said was a friend of the masses.

She narrated how the late Mohammed celebrated his 60th birthday by dining with the beggars at their Ikeja GRA residence a couple of years ago.

On the financial grant to People Living with Disability (PWDs) and scholarship, she said it was enough to impact on the life of the beneficiaries.

The Chairman of the event, Mr Yinka Olatunji, said the theme was informed by the untold hardship and economic shock Nigerians masses were experiencing as a result of the removal of subsidy.

He said that if Mohammed was alive, he would have been uncomfortable with the resulting economic hardship arising from the removal of subsidy and acted to favour the masses.

“The less privileged, the beggars were Mohammed’s people whom he took care of, made them feel comfortable, supported them financially and gave scholarship to their children,” he said.

NAN reports that 30 PWDs, including artisans, hairdressers, make-up artists, shoe makers and tailors received financial support while some were given scholarship awards.

Nairaland / General / QNET Launches Financial Literacy Programme For Youths by mobad007: 2:55pm On Aug 10, 2023
QNET, a lifestyle and wellness focused E-commerce company, says it has launched the second phase of its financial literacy programme, FinGreen to empower youths in Nigeria.

Mr Biram Fall, Regional Manager for QNET
Sub-Saharan Africa, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

Fall said FinGreen was designed to impact critical financial management skills and knowledge, by training young leaders from various communities to become trainers of financial literacy and economic empowerment.

He said the programme was launched in partnership with Transblue, Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) and Financial Literacy For All (FLFA) as the implementation and content training partners, respectively.

Fall explained that like the pilot programme, the second phase would employ the train-the-trainers model, ensuring that the learning was transmitted to the community for a more sustainable outcome.

Fall noted that the programme's pilot phase trained 20 participants, who used the peer-to-peer module in Lagos, Oyo, Osun and Ogun state to train a total of 572 beneficiaries in just two months.

Fall said the total number of beneficiaries in the pilot phase reached 592, exceeding the initial forecast of training 420 young people.

“The launch of FinGreen phase two reinforces our commitment to empowering individuals to become financially inclusive in Nigeria.

"We believe that financial literacy is a critical skill in today's world. With FinGreen, we are equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to take control of their financial future.

"We are thrilled once again to offer this transformative programme that impacts financial wisdom and fosters a community of like-minded individuals striving for success," he said.

The regional manager said reports from Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA) indicated that Nigeria has a high financial exclusion rate compared to its peers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

He noted that it also identified low awareness of financial literacy levels as a major barrier to financial inclusion in Nigeria.

"The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also stated earlier this year that penetration of financial literacy in Nigeria is still low, with a current rate of 64.1 per cent, "he said.

Fall explained that QNET recognises and acknowledges this critical need for financial literacy as an important skill for financial inclusion.

He added that FinGreen addresses the gaps by trained participants on savings, investment, money management, banking, risk management and insurance, among other key topics.

Mr Abiodun Ajisafe, Managing Director, Transblue and QNET’s local partner in Nigeria, said: “FinGreen is a game-changer for anyone looking to take control of their financial life.

"Financial literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities and empowering individuals to achieve their goals.

"With FinGreen, we provide a transformative platform that equips individuals with the tools and knowledge to navigate the complex financial landscape confidently, "Ajisafe said.

Nairaland / General / Qnet Warns On Dangers Of Electromagnetic Radiation To Humans by mobad007: 11:32am On Aug 05, 2023
QNET, a lifestyle and wellness focused E-commerce company, says exposure to Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) radiation could lead to depression, anxiety and low immunity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting.

The Head of Product and Training at QNet, Dr Shafi Shaik made the disclosure during a media workshop and press conference organised by QNet at Radisson Blu, Ikeja.

He also explained that exposure to EMF could also cause depleted and inconsistent energy levels, noting that one in every four workers experienced it .

Shaik said that studies from the International Agency of Research on Cancer, a part of World Health Organisation(WHO) in May 2011 classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans.

"According to the research this is based on an increased risk to glioma, a malignant typed of brain cancer associated with the use of wireless phone.

"There is need for us as humans to protect ourselves from these harmful energies by keeping a distance, "Shaik said.

Speaking on the company's wellness products, he said QNet had launched the Chi Pendant 4, an innovative wearable health technology that incorporates universally appealing visual design and energy-transforming properties.

Shaik said It was also recommended for people who spend time around multiple computers and tablets; frequently using phone, tablet or gaming console and having 5G infrastructure in their local area.

He said other products were the Bio light 3 and the Bio Disc 3 among others.

Also, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, the Vice Chancellor of Covenant University said that Wi-Fi was an important threat to human health.

He said that studies on Wi-Fi shows that it causes oxidative stress, sperm and testicular damage.

Adebayo said that oxidative stress was an imbalance of antioxidants in the body, which could lead to cell and tissue damage.

"Exposure to EMFs emitted from WiFi can cause DNA defragmentation in sperm cells and slow sperm motility, while heat emitted from laptops can even kill sperm cells outright, all of which negatively affect male fertility.

"Most of us especially men are fond of putting phones in their pockets, not knowing the excessive damage it causes to them in the area of male fertility.

" Some of us also sleep with our phones on the bed not knowing the amount of radiation that this devices generate and how dangerous they are to our health, Adebayo said.

Adebayo, who is also a professor of biochemistry stressed that distance was important when it came to WiFi safety.

Speaking on misinformation and negative news, Regional Manager of QNET, Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr Biram Fall said the company had zero-tolerance policy for fraudulent actions and was preserving the highest ethical standards in the direct selling sector.

"We assure everyone that we are actively addressing any issues or misinformation that may have arisen and that we are dedicated to maintaining open communication with the media.

"We expect the highest ethical standards of our workers, distributors and we have instituted strict regulations with processes to safeguard customers from illegal and fraudulent behavior, "he said

Nairaland / General / Protest: Make Nigeria Productive – Lanre Arogundade Tasks FG by mobad007: 11:06am On Aug 04, 2023
The Executive Director of the International Press Centre, Mr Lanre Arogundade, has called on the Federal Government to tackle the challenges that hinder Nigeria’s productivity.

Arogundade spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

He reacted to the nationwide protest by the organised labour.

NAN reports that Nigeria Labour Union and Trade Union Congress on Wednesday began a nationwide protest over increase in petrol price, devaluation of the Naira and increase in fees by schools owned by the Federal Government, among others.

According to Arogundade, energy is very important for sustenance of an economy.

“Government should look at solving energy problems.

“Looking at the sufferings of Nigerians, the protest is justified and legitimate.

“Moreover, we are in a democracy; so, people should be allowed to express themselves,’’ he said.

He urged law enforcement agencies, especially the police, to provide adequate security and ensure that the protest would not be taken over by hoodlums.

Arogundade advised that the Federal Government should give room for proper negotiations with labour unions.

He advised labour leaders to be transparent in their talks with the Federal Government.

“Are they for or against the regulations? What are the solutions they are offering?

“They need to be understood and their position needs to be clear.

“The labour leadership should be articulate in its position in a document such that the people can understand the logic of their argument.

“They need a document that Nigerians can relate with, which can be the basis for negotiations with government and engagement with every other interest group in the country,” he said.

On fuel subsidy, the executive director advised President Bola Tinuba to penalise those who scammed the country through it.

He said, “Those who were allegedly scamming the country by collecting subsidy and not supplying fuel should be brought to justice.”

Nairaland / General / Group Tasks FG On Fixing Refineries As Solution To Subsidy Removal by mobad007: 10:06am On Aug 04, 2023
Yiaga Africa, a Civil Society Organisation, has urged the Federal Government to urgently fix all local refineries to tackle the effects of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as fuel.

Mr Mark Amaza, Senior Communications Officer, Yiaga Africa made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday.

He reacted to the nationwide protest by the organised labour.

NAN reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Wednesday, began a nationwide protest over the country’s economic situation caused by increase in petrol price and devaluation of the Naira, among others

Amaza noted that Nigerians were faced with hardship and sufferings occasioned by removal of subsidy on fuel by the current administration, while the country’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna remained moribund.

According to him, while we understand that the subsidy reforms are necessary, it is also important that government alleviates the sufferings of Nigerians both in the short and long terms.

“If subsidy is removed without any improvement down the line, it defeats the purpose.

“Government should feel the pulse of Nigerians about how hard things are and do the needful by tackling the problem at hand and not allow it become a new norm.

“Therefore, government should roll out friendly policies to ensure the economy gets an uplift immediately.

“Government should improve the local refineries to increase investments and attract more investments to the country, thereby bringing lasting solutions.

“They should encourage foreign investments, infrastructure investments, opening up of several economic sectors so as to create jobs/employment opportunities for all.”

He, however, advised the labour leadership to be clear and concise in their negotiations with the Federal Government.

He said, “they should continue to engage with government until a lasting solution is sought regarding the issues which necessitated the current protest.

“The labour leadership should show its disenchantment and also, the protest should not be done in a way that it will worsen the situation of things and give room for it to be highjacked by criminals.
