Nairaland / General / Oba Elegushi's Title Fails On Inland Waterways, As Supreme Court Struck Down by mobad007: 10:07am On Feb 06
Oba Elegushi's Title Fails On Inland Waterways, As Supreme Court Struck Down Lagos State Government's Control Of Inland Waterways

The Supreme Court of Nigeria in a land mark judgment delivered in the case of NATIONAL INLAND WATERWAYS AUTHORITY & OTHERS VS LASWA, GOV. OF LAGOS STATE & ATTORN. GEN. OF LAGOS STATE with Suit No: SC.17/2018 on the 5th day of January 2024 by JOHN INYANG OKORO JSC leading other 4 Supreme Court Justices declared null and void Lagos State Waterways Authority Law, 2008.

Since the Title of Oba Saheed Elegushi is based on the Title issued by the Lagos State Government, it follows also that the Monarch Title has also collapsed.

The above statement is based on both Law and Facts, says Olajide Ajana, a Lagos based Legal Practitioner and Real Estate Advisor.

"The Supreme Court Judgment delivered on 5th January 2024, led by Justice Okoro at page 37 stated; "I have read through both National Inland Waterways Authority Act 2004 and the Lagos State waterways authority law 2008. I have no doubt whatsoever that both statutes have identical provisions.

"Section 22 of the LASWA law defines under the control of the first respondent to include all waterways, Rivers, Creeks, lakes, tiled land and lagoons within the boundaries of Lagos State" Similar to definition of "Inland waterways" in Section 29 of national inland waterways authority act which includes all waterways. Rivers,Creeks, lakes, tiled land, lagoons below the water based line.

"The Supreme Court further held : both enactment must not and cannot subsit side by side. The National Inland Waterways Authority Act being a Federal law must prevail whereas the identical law enacted by the Lagos State act of Assembly must be and is hereby declared null and void.

"The consequese and implication of the above pronouncements by the Supreme Court which is the highest and final Court in Nigeria is that all persons including Kabiyesi Oba Saheed Elegushi who derived title from the Lagos State Government in respect of the Inland water ways are bound and affected by the Judgement of the Supreme Court with no exception.

"Once the Title and the Claims of Lagos State has failed, the Title of Oba Saheed Elegushi and others to the area being sand filled at Orange Island axis of Lagos State has also failed, being derived from the Lagos State Government.

"The press Statement recently issued by Oba Saheed Elegushi  to the effect that he is not a party to the case of NIWA VS LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT and therefore attempting to trivialize impact of the judgement as circulating fake news is very unfortunate.

"The previous Press Statements issued with regard to the recent Supreme Court Decision to enlighten the general public and investors are based on Law and facts

"The General public and investors should be properly guided and understand that the Supreme Court is the highest court in Nigeria and their decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

"Also when the root Title to a property is affected, it affects everyone claiming from the same root, which is the case with Oba Saheed Elegushi's Title which was derived from Lagos State Government."

Nairaland / General / Supreme Court Voids Lagos Govt's Control Of Inland Waterways, LASWA Law 2008 by mobad007: 2:19am On Jan 30
The Supreme Court of Nigeria in a land mark judgment delivered in the case of NATIONAL INLAND WATERWAYS AUTHORITY & OTHERS VS LASWA, GOV. OF LAGOS STATE & ATTORN. GEN. OF LAGOS STATE on January 5. 2024 by JOHN INYANG OKORO JSC leading other four Supreme Court Justices declared null and void Lagos State Waterways Authority Law, 2008.

The supreme Court noted on page 31 of the judgment that the views expressed by Femi Okunnu (SAN) in his book ‘’Contemporary State land matters in Nigeria. The case of Lagos State’’ heavily relied on by counsel for the first to fourth respondent to argue that waterways in Lagos State do not come under item 36 of the constitution and are the personal opinion of the learned author.

They do not represent the law and certainly cannot bind this court. The law is the law irrespective of whatever legal sentiment or opinion which may be thrown up.

The court went further in page 37 "I have read through both National Inland Waterways Authority Act 2004 and the Lagos State waterways authority law 2008. I have no doubt whatsoever that both statutes have identical provisions.

"Section 22 of the LASWA Law defines under the control of the first respondent to include all waterways, Rivers, Creeks, lakes, tiled land and lagoons within the boundaries of Lagos State"Similar to definition of "Inland waterways" in Section 29 of national inland waterways authority act which includes all waterways. Rivers, Creeks, lakes, tiled land, lagoons below the water based line.

The Supreme Court held; "both enactment must not and cannot subsit side by side. The National Inland Waterways Authority Act being a Federal law must prevail whereas the identical law enacted by the Lagos State act of Assembly must be and is hereby declared null and void."

In reaction, Olajide Ajana, a Lagos based Legal Practitioner and Real Estate Advisor said the recent position of the Supreme Court has lots of dire consequence with respect to lots of sand filling projects going on within the inland waterways in Lagos State particularly at the Lekki axis and Orange Island of Lagos State.

"One of the universal fundamental principle of Law is the MAXIM: Nemo dat quod no habet. Which means ‘No one can give what he doesn’t have’.

"Relating the above principle of Law to the recent Supreme Court Decision clearly means that Lagos State Government does not possess the power to issues Title or any form license to anyone within the zones and areas that falls within the Inland water ways which include all waterways. Rivers, Creeks, lakes, tiled land, lagoons below the water based line.

"Therefore Claims to the above described areas by the Oba Saheed Ademola Elegunshi and others who are clinging to titles issued by lagos State Government has no foundation, as the Laws relied on by Lagos state has been declared null and void to the extent of its inconsistency with a federal legislation. EX NIHIL FIT ; YOU CAN NOT PLACE SOMETHING ON NOTHING AND EXPECT IT TO STAND." he added.

“There’s often a stigmatisation surrounding women who have children out of wedlock. They get labelled with unprintable names with the assumption that their children will amount to nothing.

“The film also sheds some focus on rebellious children. When they start out being rebellious, their families tend to give up on them. However, it is important to look for something special in your child; help them nurture their talents, and they will become great with it.”

It aims to tell our stories, the African way, by showcasing our reality and struggles.”

“I had the pleasure of working with an exceptional cast for this movie: Nse Ikpe Etim, Timini Egbuson, Uzor Arukwe and so many others. I set out looking for actors that would give me what I wanted, and I got the best.”

Although Funke refused to disclose her best moment or scene in the movie, even after admitting excitedly to having several favourite scenes, she therefore noted that she faces no pressure, to meet public expectations based on the high standards she had set with her previous movies, such as ‘Omo Ghetto’, ‘Battle on Buka Street’ etc.

According to her, “The sky is big enough for everyone to fly. Just keep doing what is right and promoting your content. Your work will speak for you, and if it’s good, it will sell. I’m just going to keep doing my thing and doing it well.

“To be honest, the pressure does come sometimes, but I self-reflect and remind myself to do my part and leave the rest for God. After all, some people came before me, paving the way for my journey

Nairaland / General / Educationist Calls For Universal Entrepreneurship Education To Solve Poverty by mobad007: 8:41am On Nov 01, 2023
A Professor of Education, Simeon Dosunmu, says entrepreneurship education is the most powerful and enduring instrument for effecting social change and alleviating poverty in the country.

Dosunmu, a lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU), said this at the eighth annual international conference organised by the Faculty of Education, LASU, Ojo, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The conference had the theme: “Understanding and Tackling Rampaging Global Poverty Through Education.”

Dosunmu, also the Chairman of the conference, said a well-planned functional education system boosted human moral, moulded them into enlightened citizens and immersed them in the shared values of society.

“A functional education system develops commitment to national goals, and enhances the productive capacities of citizens for a secured future.

“It is through education that society can renew itself and promote desirable changes by providing opportunities and experiences inside and outside the classroom for citizens to combat their prejudices.

“Education also renews dysfunctional beliefs and makes them adjust to the philosophy and emerging needs of their society,” Dosunmu said.

He added that the choice of the theme was informed by the fact that economic inequality had been a prominent and perennial concern among people, governments, economists, public analysts and educationists.

“The persistence of inequalities within nations and across nations demands innovative policy responses to alleviate poverty.

“It is imperative, therefore, that we interrogate poverty, and education-based solutions are proffered at this point.

“Providing answers to these burning national questions will require significant changes in the orientation, structure and functioning of society; and it is in these respects that education comes in handy,” Dosunmu said.

Also, Mr Adesola Adebawo, General Manager, Government, Joint Venture and External Relations Energy Operational Services Ltd., called on governments to introduce universal entrepreneurship education, which would help to solve poverty in Nigeria.

Adebawo said introducing entrepreneurial education would help to build the managerial capacity of young entrepreneurs, and called for greater investment in data platforms to manage and analyse data on entrepreneurship.

Nairaland / General / Craneburg Construction Assures On Speedy Rehabilitation Of Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe by mobad007: 2:29pm On Oct 18, 2023
...Craves for cooperation of commuters, pledge minimal disruption

The Management of Craneburg Construction Company Limited has assured that the ongoing Rehabilitation/Re-Construction/Upgrade of the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway (Phase IIB) from Greensprings to Abraham Adesanya in Lagos will continue to make substantial progress.

This they noted, while assuring smoother commute for all road users by maintaining effective traffic management measures.

In line with its commitment to minimize disruption to the daily lives of road users and the surrounding communities, Craneburg stressed its commitment to continuously collaborate closely with the Lagos State government, working alongside relevant Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and other bodies.

Other key partners in this endeavor include the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Neighborhood Watch.

"Road construction of this magnitude inevitably leads to temporary traffic diversions, reducing the number of lanes available for road users.

"Moreover, the occasional breakdowns and accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles, which are prevalent on this axis, further exacerbate traffic congestion on the already limited lanes, occasionally causing bottlenecks.

"To mitigate these challenges, series of measures have been implemented as part of the project to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

"This includes the deployment of road signs and diversion barriers, ensuring that some lanes remain open and pothole-free during construction.

"We also ensure implementation of an accelerated and strategic execution program for both daytime and nighttime works as well as deployment of well-trained and motivated traffic management personnel, among others.

"The visual representations of the previous and current states of the road under the project are displayed, showcasing the tangible progress made in these traffic management efforts.

"We urge all road users to continue to demonstrate patience, cooperation, and adherence to traffic regulations, as this is essential for a smooth traffic flow.

" Actions that may adversely affect traffic management include non-compliance with road signs and regulations, disregard for the guidance and directions of traffic management personnel, vehicle breakdowns leading to road obstructions, and impatient driving" the statement noted.

The company further noted that the Project, which is scheduled for early completion and delivery, remains a commendable and vital initiative that will benefit the entire community.

Thus, they crave the understanding and cooperation of all road users as the Project continues to move forward.

“It will benefit the children because it will change the way they play. When we came to the Orphanage, we found out that they do not have a place to watch television or to entertain themselves.
“It is supposed to be for two purposes; first, to entertain and second, educational viewing and access to educational content.

“This is the social inclusion and I am hoping that this will trigger a lot of people and a lot of homes,” Ogundele said.

Nairaland / General / NGO Empowers Journalists For Effective Oversight And Anti-corruption Reporting I by mobad007: 7:23pm On Oct 01, 2023
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has built the capacity of journalists to effectively report the defence and security sector.

Senior Programme Person, Peace and Security CISLAC, Bertha Ogbimi during a one-day Media Dialogue on “Effective Oversight and Defence Anti Corruption Reportage” in Abuja noted that the workshop is aimed at empowering journalists to effectively oversight the defence sector by asking the right questions to inform the public.

She said the workshop was also to know how to seek accountability and transparency in the sector where they fell short of best practices.

Ogbimi argued that specialization would enable journalists to focus on specific aspects of the security sector, thereby enhancing their ability to uncover crucial information and hold relevant authorities accountable.

According to her "Nigeria is bedevilled by multi dimensional security challenges and because of these, a lot of allocations have been launched into the defence and security sector.

”One would expect that normally, with the amount of monies being channelled to the defence and security sector, the issues pertaining to insecurity would have been addressed.

“However, unfortunately, we see an upsurge in these challenges. As a matter of fact, a particular area called conflict entrepreneurship is booming.

“So you begin to wonder, why are we getting a counter reaction when we are putting in so much money.

"Sometimes you get to talk with security personnel, and they tell you that they do not have what it takes to challenge armed opposition groups.”

Ogbimi added that although a lot of money was allocated in the defence and security budgets and allocations but the welfare of security personnel has remained a challenge.

“So some questions need to be asked, because the money is our taxpayers money and so we need some answers.

“We are not saying that the security operations and procurements and the finances of security institutions should be made completely bare

“We recognise the fact that there is such a thing as natural security, we are all patriotic citizens, we cannot bare our military in the public.

“What are those information that are not detrimental to national security that could be made available for citizens to truly understand where their taxpayers monies are going?

Ogbimi said that given the fact that the insecurity kept increasing rather than reducing, it behoves of journalists to get answers to the critical questions.

She said this would help stakeholders in the defence and security sector play their roles and carry out their mandate effectively because the know they are being watched.

She said that this would help the security of Nigeria to fall in place.

Also, Mr Senator Iroegbu, a facilitator, while speaking on Good Practices in Defence and Security Investigative Reporting, tasked journalists on their mandate.

Iroegbu said that investigative journalism was crucial for the purpose of transparency, awareness creation, reforms and to deter wrong doings.

He encouraged journalists to uphold the ethics of journalism while at it and to always seek to report the truth. He called for an immediate increase in capacity building for journalists and media practitioners.

Iroegbu underscored the necessity of equipping journalists and media practitioners with the skills and knowledge required for effective oversight in the security sector.

"To hold the security sector accountable, journalists must be adequately trained in understanding the intricacies of this complex domain. This entails specialized training and continuous capacity building."

The event highlighted the need for specialization among journalists to enhance the effectiveness of security sector oversight and emphasized the significance of General Defense Information (GDI) knowledge in achieving this goal.

Additionally, the government was urged to initiate security sector reforms to address the challenge of secrecy within the sector.

Nairaland / General / Media Innovation: My Unforgettable Trip To South Africa Sponsored By MTN Nigeria by mobad007: 11:27am On Sep 29, 2023
By Babajide Awoyinfa
This is one trip that will continue to linger in my memory for a lifetime. In future, if by God’s grace I attain some measure of greatness and I am to write my memoirs, this is one chapter of my life I will definitely love to capture: how MTN Nigeria treated me and my colleagues to an adventure I never could have imagined or dreamt of.

How did it all begin?
I heard from a friend that MTN was opening a media-screening slot to sponsor 20 journalists in a Media Innovation Programme, aimed at building the capacity of media practitioners in Nigeria.

As a leader in the telecoms space, MTN was showing commitment to impacting the Nigerian media industry through intensive training that will open the participants to knowledge about media convergence, technology, and the future of combining outstanding reporting with media technology.

I had to quickly send all required documents to apply for this sponsored programme. During the screening process I was also given some tasks to perform, which were graded and screened.
And after a rigorous selection process from a pool of over 2,700 media applicants, I got accepted as one of the 20 inaugural fellows of the Media Innovation Programme.

The MTN Media Innovation Programme is a fully funded six-month Fellowship for 20 fellows to study at the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, Epe, Lagos, Nigeria. It also included a nine-day fully funded study trip to South Africa.
It was an incredible opportunity for me to embark on this media innovation trip to South Africa, sponsored by MTN Nigeria, one of Africa's leading telecommunications companies.

This journey was not only enlightening but also a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in the media landscape.

As I disembarked from the plane at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the excitement was breathtaking. The city's vibrant atmosphere and very cool weather made me wonder if this truly was an African country or we mistakenly landed in the United Kingdom.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the MTN team, who had meticulously planned every detail of our trip. From the beautiful high-rising Anew Hotel, Parktonian, a unique 5-star room, with delicious buffet meals and other treatments, I knew I was here for a treat of my life.

Our second day in Johannesburg was packed with visits to some of the country's historical path-way to apartheid—the infamous political system of racial discrimination that is now part of South Africa’s history. I had the incredible opportunity to visit Soweto and explore Nelson Mandela's house, as well as the Apartheid Museum in South Africa. This journey was a profound and eye-opening experience that provided me with a deeper understanding of the country's history and the struggle for freedom and equality.
The study trip proper began with a classroom sessions at the University of Johannesburg.

It was designed to expose us to the business of journalism and the media business opportunities in Africa. Some of the sessions were facilitated by scholars in Media and Communication and Pan-Africanism, including Prof. Nixon Karrithi of Tangaza Media Africa, Dr. Prinola Govenden and Dr. Sifiso Mnisi of the University of Johannesburg.

Next, we toured the studios of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). We also toured the hi-tech MTN Group Headquarters in South Africa, to discuss media- related issues with Sbu Ngalwa, the Chairperson of South Africa’s National Editors Forum (SANEF). Next, we met the High Commissioner of Nigeria to South Africa, Amb. Muhammad Manta and the Chief Director for West Africa, Department of International Relations and Cooperation Nyameko Goso.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the South African Institute of International Affairs, and the Department of Foreign Affairs in Pretoria to assess the gains and losses of the Nigerian-South African Bilateral Relations and the role of the media in Pan-Africanism.

Another major highlight was our 40 minutes train trip to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Pretoria. To celebrate the Heritage Day with Deputy Minister of Department of International Relations and Cooperation Mashego Dlamini, Ambassador Tebogo Seokolo and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa Muhammad Manta.

Amid the busy schedule of media-related activities, we took some time off to immerse ourselves into the entertaining nightlife in South Africa. We danced to the soulful ‘Amapiano’ beat and mingled with some beautiful people.

On the lighter side, one cannot forget the memory of South African girls, so naturally endowed and curvy. What some Nigerian ladies spend millions in getting their butts enlarged surgically, South African ladies have it in abundance. Both young and old.
On a final note, I am immensely grateful to MTN Nigeria for making this journey possible and for their unwavering commitment to fostering innovation in Africa's media landscape.

As I returned home with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, I felt empowered to contribute to the ever-evolving world of media innovation, driven by the belief that the future of media in Africa is brighter than ever.

“It is extremely important for young and upcoming artistes to ensure that they study their contracts to know the details and know what they are going through.

“We put out a content that affects young artistes and that is why we came up with this series so that when they watch it, they would learn a lot of things and be very careful.

“Young artistes need to be educated and we need to organise a lot of seminars, workshops for them to know that they are important.

“The young talents are very hungry t be seen as they want to showcase their talent but unfortunately, they don’t study their contracts, they don’t get a lawyer or families that are experienced to educate them.

“The series would teach them alot of things that would help them grow and learn the basic things in the industry.” She said.

She noted that the series centres on the competition in the entertainment industry noting that the series explored Afrobeat.

“The main character,’SHE’ is very condescending and a bully, just like in every sector, you have bullies everywhere as along as there is hierarchy.

Nairaland / General / Ogun Open To Local, Foreign Investment, Says OGFTZ Coordinator Abbey Onas by mobad007: 8:46pm On Sep 28, 2023
Dr Abbey Onas, coordinator Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ), has assured investors that the Governor Dapo Abiodun led-administration would develop economic policies and programmes to create a conducive business environment for investors.

Onas gave the assurance in a statement on Thursday while stressing that state government was open for business and partnership.

He, therefore, called on investors to collaborate/partner with the state government to develop critical sectors of the economy.

OGFTZ is one of the free trade zones out of a group of eight free zones which have been designated to be formed in Africa and is the second free zone after the Lekki Free Trade Zone to be developed with the help of the Chinese government.

The OGFTZ is located in the city of Igbesa in the Ogun state of Nigeria.

Onas listed agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development, transportation, healthcare, waste management, hospitality industry among others as critical areas for investment in the state.

The OGFTZ coordinator stated that the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Nigeria served as a powerful reminder of the untapped potential in Africa’s rapidly evolving economic landscape.

According to him, the Dapo Abiodun-led administration is making progressive policies and programmes that support investment and business in the state.

"I was in Poland for an investment/economic forum early September to woo global investors to Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria.

"That meeting was the 32nd in the series of the Economic Forum that has become a tradition. It was a gathering of leading investors and economic giants that came with lots of opportunities.

"The body language of the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu so far speaks to its readiness to tap economic opportunities from across the world and open up Nigeria for business and investment.

"The President has assumed the role of the Chief Marketing Officer of Nigeria and Africa, telling the global audience at every avenue that we're ready for mutually beneficial partnerships.

"Most recently at the United Nations General Assembly, President Tinubu argued that Africa is not a problem to be avoided, calling the rest of the world to work with the continent as the key to the world's future.

"This body language of the federal government, in addition to the investment drive of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, is what I have seen and is motivating me to push for economic opportunities from across the world to the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone, " he said.

Reeling out some of the achievements made in critical sectors Onas said on Road Infrastructure, Transportation, Energy, Security and others, governor Abiodun had made huge investment
that attracted and sustained investment in the state.

He commended the governor for doing creditably well in his first tenure while assuring the people that more would come in his second tenure.

Onas said in order to make the State a major investment destination in Nigeria and by extension Africa, the governor also established the Ogun State Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency.

"This government organ has the mandate to attract investors into the state; coordinate private sector investment activities, and streamline processes and procedures to ease investors’ experience in setting up their businesses in the state.

"That was a brilliant initiative whose positive impact has begun to manifest, as Ogun is now a state of interest for many investors," he said.

The Coordinator said that the Ogun State governor had also supported with the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads and road networks in the state.

He added that over 400km roads had been constructed/rehabilitated by the Dapo Abiodun-led administration of Ogun State.

According to him, this, no doubt, has changed the face of the state and eased transportation within Ogun.

"Good road networks are a major catalyst for investment. It's exciting that Governor Abiodun has his eyes fixated on renewing road networks in Ogun State."

On Security, he stated that security attracts investment while noting that Ogun people are generally peaceful and welcoming.

He said: "They are always ready to extend the hands of fellowship to visitors.

"The governor has also strengthened
the security architecture of the state by keying into the Amotekun initiative of Southwestern regional governments in Nigeria.

"This is in addition to restructuring the Security Trust Fund of the state which has made it possible to mobilise resources for security personnel.

"The adoption of ultramodern security techniques such as drones and other sophisticated technology in surveillance and monitoring the state has prevented criminal gangs from gaining a foothold.

The security of the state can always get better, ".

According to the statement, I have seen the investment drive of Governor Dapo Abiodun over the years, and it is really propelling me to make moves on my own to attract investment to the state.

We have a Governor that has a growth and progressive mindset.

So, at the economic forum, I made a case for Africa, Nigeria and Ogun State. This was even long before the President's address at UNGA 78. My message was similar to that of the President.

I told the session which has a global audience that Africa should not be seen as a challenging investment terrain.

On the contrary, we have the presence of highly educated Nigerians and Africans eager to collaborate with global partners in achieving great feats.

Some investors might want to wait to see how things pan out. However, this may be costly for them.

It was my view at the economic forum that with the pace at which the present administration of President Tinubu is working on securing foreign investments, such category of investors might miss out on the available opportunities.

The perfect time to invest in Nigeria is therefore Now.

On the 23rd of September, in an astonishing moment that ushered in new possibilities and collaborations, a select number of accomplished Polish investors and seasoned CEOs from reputable companies in Poland and Europe from diverse industries arrived at the Abuja International Airport.

Their visit is a followup on the fruitful discussions had at the Economic summit and aimed at exploring investment opportunities and establishing fruitful partnerships within Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / Int’l Peace Day: Stakeholders Call For Youths Involvement In Nation’s Devt. by mobad007: 11:41am On Sep 22, 2023
Peace stakeholders on Thursday urged government-at-all-levels to engage youths in social-economic activities, so they could contribute their patriotic service to the nation’s growth and development.

The stakeholders made the appeal during the 2023 International Peace Day celebration in Lagos, which had the theme: “Action for Peace: Our Ambition for Global Goal.”

The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) Lagos State Commandant, Dr Kuforiji Williams, said every Sept. 21 served as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for global peace and collaboration towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“PCN is an organisation that affiliates with the United Nations. This year’s Peace Day theme lay emphasis on the interdependence of peace and sustainable development.

“It is an indisputable fact that where peace is lacking, there cannot be sustainable development.

“International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilise political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity,” he said.

Williams urged stakeholders to engage youths in activities, so they could contribute their service towards the achievements of the SDGs.

The Assistant National Commandant in charge of Operations, PCN, Mr Badmus Akeem, said that there was need to engage the youth to discourage them from being involving in social vices.

“There is the need to train and empower the youth, they constitute 85 per cent of people in Nigeria, and when they are not guided there is going to be problem.

“But when they are actively involved, there will be peace.

“Our leaders should re-orientate youths on the need to embrace peace at all times,” he said.

Akeem urged youths to be partakers and ambassadors of peace in the world.

The Deputy Director, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr Olukosi Julius, commended the executives of the PCN for taking out time and scarce resources to invest profitably in young people.

“Youths are taking the initiative in changing the narrative that indeed young people are capable of becoming today’s leaders, a vital part of building a peaceful and egalitarian society for all,” he said.

According to Julius, the place of peace in the growth and development of the state is fundamental, especially when the country is in need of lasting solutions to insecurity.

Peace is essential when the country is in need of solutions to inter- community feud, social vices among the youths, drug-related matters and its consequences and violence by other agitated groups.

“It will be commendable to see that the change is coming from the youth themselves as they promote peace, embrace dialogue and alternative dispute and conflict resolution techniques.

“And as they promote being involved in community policing and playing their roles as the bedrock of societal development,” the deputy director said

He stressed that “the cost of peace is greater than the cost of war.”

“The aftermath of the ENDSARs protest has left the state still nursing and counting losses.

“We are partners in progress in building the state of our dream. The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, is committed to youth development through the ministry of youth and social development.

“We will continue to support the PCN, Lagos State Command in pursuing their mandate and in providing sustainable programmes that will have positive impact on the youth in Lagos,” Julius said.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Commandant, Mr Ishaq Aifaradarai, said that there was need for concerted efforts by all to promote peace in the country.

“Peace is everybody’s business, let us join hands to restore peace in the society,” he said.

Aifaradarai, represented by Mr Dapo Fasae, the Lagos State Deputy Commandant, NSCDC, called for collaboration among security agencies to ensure that there was an holistic approach to achieving the peace assignment.

The Executive Secretary of Domestic Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said there would be peace if the state was devoid of violence.

According to her, all forms of abuse, domestic and sexual violence are crimes against the state.

Vivour-Adeniyi, who was represented by Mrs Feyishara Onadipe, Field Operation Officer, DSVA, said that the state was commitment to helping survivors of sexual offences and ensuring perpetratrs are held accountable for their action.

She called for collaborate efforts of all to rid the state of these menace.

"We urged survivors of domestic and sexual violence to break the Culture of Silence by reporting cases through the agency’s toll-free line 08000333333.

"A mandatory reporter can also report cases of abuse through the agency’s toll-free line or walk into its office at Novel House Jobi Fele Way, Ikeja," she said.

Nairaland / General / UNGA: Tinubu Commends Tony Elumelu For Enormous $100m Support For Smes, Startups by mobad007: 12:32pm On Sep 20, 2023
... Challenges Africans to Look Inwards Instead of Reliance on Int'l Donor Funds

President Bola Tinubu has commended Tony Elumelu for the impact his foundation, Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) has had on young people and SMEs in the country and beyond since 2010.

He also challenged Africans, including its political and business leaders, to look inwards instead of undue reliance on international donor funds.

He made the call at the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) and United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Generation Unlimited (GENU) Breakfast Roundtable meeting, a side event at the ongoing 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, yesterday.

The event also served as a forum for the launch of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Impact Report titled "The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship
Programme: A Decade of Impact."

The president, who was represented by the Minister for Trade and Industry, Doris Uzoka-Anite, also stressed on the need for local solutions to economic growth and unemployment, while offering incentives to willing investors

The President who was represented by the Minister for Trade and Industry, Doris Uzoka-Anite, decried the over reliance by Africans on foreign donors, calling for an end to that mindset.

He said: "I don't think we are doing enough as Africans for Africa. We need to do a lot more. Tony Elumelu has been the major person driving investments in supporting the youths and start-ups.

"We need to challenge ourselves a bit more further. Africa has some of the richest people on the planet. We have a resource-rich continent with huge population of young people.

"We need to take up the challenge upon ourselves as Africans to support one another. It is about time we stopped looking for international organisations for donor funding. We need to go out of that mentality.

"We will rather have donor funds coming in to support what we have on ground already and not then coming to give us a seed or showing us the way. We actually know how to do things. In Africa, we have a rich culture and if we go back to our tradition, there is a whole lot we can learn from each other."

On the importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), he said they were the engines of Nigerian and African economic growth, adding that they contributed almost half of national GDP, and more than 80 percent of employment.

While wooing potential investors with promises of right infrastructure provision such as regulations, property rights, access to justice, protection from unfair competition, power, as well as roads to market and ports, he said: "We must organise the disorganised SME market, and enable greater organisation and formalisation.

"We must invest in SMEs. Governments and the private sector have important roles to play in this regard. Our investing must be coordinated, targeted, and generous. This is where the example of the Tony Elumelu Foundation is a worthy role model for all.

"We must create and expand pathways for our SMEs to export their products and services and integrate into global value chains."

In his speech, Founder TEF, Tony
Elumelu said this highlights the significant contribution of the TEF's flagship 100 million dollars Entrepreneurship Programme in advancing Africa's socio-economic development.

He noted that 13 years ago, the foundation took a bold step to rewrite and change Africa by enhancing entrepreneurship development to galvanise African solutions.

Stressing on the seed capital, training and mentoring and networking provided by TEF, he added "we have lit a beacon, and we need the beacon to shine brighter and better. To do this, we need the support and collaboration of everyone.

"100 million dollars is a drop of water in the ocean compared to what we need in Africa. Young Africans need economic support. We've seen the devastating effect of climate change, how our young ones due to hopelessness are migrating and living in difficult situations. We want to put a stop to that."

To achieve that, Elumelu called for collaboration to prioritise young Africans, bring more women to economic activities and alleviate poverty, adding that "poverty anywhere is a threat to all of us everywhere".

Sharing the Lagos experience at the gathering, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said that TEF's work aligns with Lagos State programmes on economic empowerment and poverty reduction.

Sanwo-Olu said that collaborative efforts must be evolved to enhance the scale of impact to deepen inclusion, equity and fairness.

Also speaking, Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa (UNDP) said they partnered TEF due to similar belief in galvanising development across Africa and globally, adding that Africa's wealth was its population, which constitutes 70 per cent of young, vibrant and innovative Africans.

"It is our loss if we don't invest in them because that is the future of prosperity," she said, just as she called for enhanced collaboration and investment to strengthen economic development of African youths.

Earlier on, TEF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Somachi Chris-Asoluka, said the organisation is the partner of choice for all development agencies across the world who want to transform the way they give to Africa, who want to have a more catalytic, impactful partnership with the African continent.

She said: "The Tony Elumelu foundation is a leading philanthropy in Africa empowering young African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries.

"We launched our flagship program, the Tony Elumelu foundation Entrepreneurship programme in 2015 with a $100 million commitment by Mr Elumelu and his family.

"His goal was to see 10,000 African entrepreneurs over 10 years, in only eight years, we have more than surpassed that target so date.

"We have funded 18,000 entrepreneurs, disbursing over a 100 million dollars directly as seed capital to these entrepreneurs and they have gone on to create over 400 thousand jobs across all African countries."
