Politics / ANAP Poll Flawed By Lack Of Assigned Weightings To Regions by moneycentral20: 10:15pm On Sep 15, 2022
A new poll commissioned by the Anap Foundation and conducted by NOI Polls Limited, showing the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi leading in the race for the 2023 Presidential election is flawed due to the huge number of undecided voters as well as a lack of weighting assigned to different regions, according to MoneyCentral analysis.

The polls results released by ANAP showed that the total percentage of those who are undecided or refused to participate was 47%, which is more than double the score for the winner of the poll Obi who got 21%.

This makes it statistically impossible to infer anything meaningful from the results.

When the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr Bola Tinubu’s score of 13%; and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s score of 13% is added to Obi’s score, it comes to 47%.

It means all three candidates combined are below the 50% mark while the undecided votes are statistically too large (equal to all three), to make the results anything but noise at this stage.

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.11% (year-on-year) in real terms in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022, showing a sustained positive growth for six consecutive quarters since the recession witnessed in 2020 when negative growth rates were recorded in quarter two and three of 2020.

The Q1 2022 growth rate was higher than the 0.51% growth rate recorded in Q1 2021 but lower than 3.98% recorded in Q4 2021 as oil output continued to slump, according to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Politics / Nigeria SWF Underperforms Global Peers As Total Income Down 8% In 2021 by moneycentral20: 2:04pm On May 23, 2022
Nigeria’s sovereign wealth fund (SWF) under performed global peers in 2021 as its total comprehensive income fell by 8% to N146.9 billion, despite it being a year of rally in global equities, leading to outperformance by other SWFs.

Total comprehensive income for the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority or NSIA which manages Nigeria’s SWF was affected by a slide in interest income, gains on financial assets and net foreign exchange gains, compared to the year ago period, data seen by MoneyCentral shows.

An increase in costs such as investment management and custodian fees as well as depreciation and amortization costs also affected the bottom-line.

By comparison, Norway’s SWF returned 14.5% in 2021, driven by positive equity and real estate returns, Norges Bank said in March.

Business / 5 Reasons Why Talk Of Dangote Being Broke Is Financial Illiteracy by moneycentral20: 3:15pm On May 18, 2022
Recently there have been publications in some online media to the effect that Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote is broke, with his holding Company Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) said to be unable to complete its multi-billion dollars 650,000-barrel refinery in the outskirts of Lagos.

We believe such reports to be financial illiteracy and a lack of understanding of how modern finance works.

A simple definition of financial illiteracy is the opposite of financial literacy. Financial literacy is the knowledge necessary to make important financial decisions. It can help with decisions about budgets, debt, and investing.

Dangote is the 66th richest man in the world, and worth $21 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

MoneyCentral will below breakdown the reasons Dangote cannot be ‘broke’ and how the current and future cash flows from all of his productive assets (sugar, cement, refining, salt, agriculture, fertilizer etc) are the source of his wealth.

DIL is a diversified conglomerate in Nigeria with a leading share in the cement business and a future key operator in the petrochemical industry through its fertiliser and oil refinery business.

Politics / The Lagos Visionscape Garbage Scandal And Attempts At A Cover-up by moneycentral20: 12:35pm On May 16, 2022
It is perhaps a scandal that Lagos taxpayers are still paying for the misadventure called Visionscape some four years after the controversial waste management firm unceremoniously exited operations in the state.

The Lagos State Government in its capacity as the Sponsor/co-obligor on Visionscape’s N28.47 billion of 5-year bonds issued at 17.5 percent, and due in 2022, has been making monthly payments of N713.7 million into its irrevocable sinking fund accounts backing the bond.

The fund is then used to settle semi-annual coupon payments of N4.28 billion due to Visionscape bond investors such that all Visionscape debt service obligations have been met by Lagos since 2018, sources tell MoneyCentral.

The interest payments are set to continue until maturity of the bonds in September 2022, redemption of which will likely fall on the balance sheet of the Lagos State government.

That’s a great deal for the lucky high net worth individuals and investors being paid on behalf of a company that ceased operations in 2018.

Not so much for Lagos State taxpayers and residents who have endured shoddy garbage disposal and what insiders say is a corrupt deal enabled by poor governance in Lagos.

Business / Musk Faces SEC Investigation For Belated Disclosure Of Twitter Stake- Report by moneycentral20: 7:42am On May 12, 2022
Billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly facing a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigation for not disclosing his large stake in Twitter on time.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the SEC is looking into his late disclosure. In April, the SEC declined to comment on a potential investigation. The SEC didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

Musk acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, making him one of the largest shareholders of the social network.

He first revealed his stake on April 4, at least 10 days after he was supposed to file a public form to the SEC that investors must submit when they buy more than 5% of a company’s shares.

The tardy submission allowed him to buy more stock without alerting other shareholders. The filing could have signaled to shareholders that Musk may have been interested in taking control of Twitter.

Business / Why You Should Buy MTN Stock Now, Even If It’s Just 10 Shares by moneycentral20: 2:33pm On Apr 14, 2022
Ten shares of MTN Nigeria (MTNN), is worth about N2,130 today as MTNN trades at around N213 per share. If that is all anyone reading this can afford we suggest they make the plunge and buy just (10) stocks of MTNN.

Of course most people have much more than that to spend but just don’t realise it. The money spent going out with the boys to the bars every weekend, the expensive watch or cologne you splurge on, for the ladies, the shoes, hair, or another handbag that you could probably do without.

Why do we at MoneyCentral urge people young and old to buy MTN stock? Because we believe that owning a piece of MTNN, will help them get excited about stocks and the long term wealth creation it brings.

So when next our readers want to purchase a N50,000 bottle of cologne or lace wig, they envision 234 shares of MTNN instead and we trust that over time the utility/excitement they get by owning the MTNN shares (through getting regular dividend payments/capital gains) will surpass the alternative forgone by not buying the cologne or wig.

Politics / 2023 : Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu Joins Race For Imo East Senatorial Seat by moneycentral20: 10:01pm On Apr 08, 2022
Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu, yesterday, officially declared her interest to represent Imo East Senatorial District (Owerri zone) in the Senate in 2023.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu, fondly called Ada Owerri, which is her traditional chieftaincy title, made the declaration, yesterday, while addressing members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Owerri.

According to her, her aspiration to represent his pre-marital zone in the Senate was gingered by the need to address the gross under-development and infrastructural deficit in her maiden home of Emeabiam in Owerri West local council and the other eight local councils that make up the zone.

She regretted that successive administrations had neglected the zone, commending the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for approving the construction of a five-kilometre road in her area.

Her words: “I am running for Senate to represent Imo East Senatorial Zone. There is nothing wrong in that other than to change the narratives of power in the zone.

I will go there to make sure that life is made easier.
“Owerri people have acknowledged my importance. When it comes to infrastructural facilities, I am reaching out to everyone. I am a daughter from Owerri that is coming back to fix the community. I have structure in Imo.”

Asked the political party she would run on its platform, Anyanwu-Akeredolu said: “I am the wife of an All Progressives Congress (APC) sitting governor. Where else will I be? APC is the party. If you want to be a good party person, whatever your party arrives at, you have to abide by it,” she added.

She maintained that since her 40 years of marriage (since 1980) in Ondo State, she has ensured good relationship between Imo and Ondo states via constant visits to Imo State every December and other festive periods except when she undertook a two-year study abroad.

She also said she had used her Breast Cancer Foundation to touch the lives of many people in Imo State. Imo East Senatorial District has nine local councils comprising Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, Owerri West, Mbaitoli, Ikeduru, Ezinihitte Mbaise, Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise and Ngor Okpala.

Politics / Pentagon Is Calling But Russian Military Won’t Pick Up The Phone by moneycentral20: 2:53pm On Apr 08, 2022
US military leaders have had no communication with the Russian Military in Moscow since the beginning of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin again claimed at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Thursday.

While the Pentagon chief said he was “disappointed” by the apparent situation, he added, “It doesn’t mean we’ll stop reaching out to engage them. I think we have to have the ability to talk to the leadership.”

“[General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff] and I myself have frequently reached out to our counterparts in Russia to try to ensure that we maintain a dialogue. That’s in the last – since mid-February,” Austin told the senators.

“That’s not been very successful because the Russians have not responded,” he added.

Austin had been summoned to the Senate to answer questions about his department’s requested 2023 budget, the largest in US history.

At a March 30 press briefing, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby admitted there had been “no conversations to speak of” with the Russian military, but professed a “willingness to have those discussions,” after a reporter asked whether Washington had been “in touch” with Russia’s military leadership.

Crime / Dr Anu, Med Contour Court Trial To Commence May 26th, 2022 by moneycentral20: 10:38am On Apr 08, 2022
The Federal High Court in Lagos has entered its decision and ruled rejecting the Defendant’s Dr Anu and Med Contour no Case Submission in the botched plastic surgery case.

Specifically, the Court ruled that the evidence so far propounded, presented and articulated by the Prosecution, and admitted by the Court satisfy the elements of the criminal charges pending against Anuoluwapo Adepoju.

As such, a prima facie case had been established which requires appropriate defense. The Court adjourned the case to May 26th for continuation of trial.

On October 14, 2020, after the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) led by Babatunde Irukera as Lead Prosecutor closed its case upon examination and cross examination of the Commission’s witnesses, the defendant – Anuoluwapo Funmilayo Adepoju (Anuoluwapo Adepoju) through defense counsel filed a No Case Submission claiming that the prosecution has not made a sufficiently answerable prima facie case for the defendant to defend.
