How to obtain financing with a low or zero credit score

Life with no credit history or a poor credit score can be difficult. One of the first consequences that comes to mind is the reduced possibility of obtaining financing. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), consumer loans increased by approximately 35 percent to a value of N786 billion in 2015.

The country boasts over 60 million bank account holders. However, only 25 percent of these holders have any form of credit information or score to help in the assessment of whether they qualify for financing. In 2016, bank account ownership declined to 34 percent from 37 percent in 2015. As a result, majority of Nigerians face increasing difficulties in obtaining loans or credit products for personal needs or as funding for their new business ventures.

For the majority of Nigerians with no credit history, they may be left wondering what options are available to them to obtain the financing they desire to get started on their goals whether it is starting their very own SME, paying for university or owning a home. If you are one of them or are looking for financing to rebuild a diminished credit history, take a look at these three handy tips.
Consider a Guarantor

One of the more common options is to approach someone you trust and request them to cosign your loan application as your guarantor. The good: If the person is of good standing and has a well documented and positive credit history, your loan application is highly likely to be approved. Your interest charges are also mitigated to some extent. However, should you default on your loan payments, the responsibility of the debt passes to your guarantor. It is advisable that you have a through conversation with the person you would like to act as your guarantor outlining the loan terms. This is a great way for younger adults or people with no history of borrowing to get started on building their credit file.

This is a great way for younger adults or people with no history of borrowing to get started on building their credit file.
Explore Specialised Loans

There are some loan and credit lenders that offer tailored personal loans specifically for those that may find it difficult to access traditional forms of finance. Many of those people either have non existent credit files similar to the 45 million Nigerians or are looking to rebuild their poor credit score. However, be advised that these loans normally come with much higher interest charges to compensate for what is termed riskier lending.

Documentation required includes the relevant application form, bank statement, proof of employment and address and finally, the bank may request the same from your guarantor. If you are applying for a business loan, it is also wise to have a professional business and marketing plan ready to show to your bank advisor in the interview. This will help convince them of your dedication to the intended purpose of the loan.

Skye Bank surprises promo winners with huge cash rewards

Skye Bank Plc is making banking more interesting for its customers. The lender’s ongoing Millionaires’ Promo remains an opportunity for it to reward its loyal customers with cash and consolation prizes. The suspense that greeted the promo draw held in Ekiosa market in Benin City, the Edo State after a winner got N1 million cash prize reaffirmed the integrity of the exercise, writes COLLINS NWEZE.

For Skye Bank Plc, customer empowerment remains a priority. The lender has continued to reward its loyal customers with cash and consolation prizes running into millions of naira in the ongoing Skye Millionaire promo.

The drama and suspense that greeted the recent draw of the promo will remain evergreen in the minds of the crowd that gathered at the busy Ekiosa market in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

As the savings account number, name and phone number flashed on the giant electronic board mounted where the previous consolatory cash and other prize winners had been shown, the crowd hailed the winner, Mrs. Eunice Odubor, an Inspector with the Civil Defence Corp, from Ishan but resident in Benin City.

School feeding programme costs N6.2b

The Federal Government has spent N6.2 billion on National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) as at last August, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Protection, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, has said.

In a statement, she said the programme, which is already in 20 states, has been projected to become the largest school feeding initiative in Africa as plans were underway to cover the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

She affirmed that the government’s plan is to take the NHGSFP initiative, which feeds over six million school children in 20 states, to the rest of the country within the shortest possible time.

Uwais said: “As at August, last year (2017), the Federal Government spent N6.2 billion on the school feeding programme in 14 states. This has encouraged increase in school attendance across the country as the programme is also designed to improve school enrolment and completion.
